In my own training I talk about how important it is to maintain your “90s” (elbows) in your swing and that’s part of it is keeping that lead elbow coming up so the barrel works in the zone and gets to its connection point

Really appreciate the time that you put on analyzing the swing!!! It looks like he’s turning the barrel inside the ball and the move is a by product of that. And depending of the location or the pitch the front elbow will work level or lightly up, thank you again for you great work….

    Awesome tip Matt.
A lot of coaches here in the south teaches kids to hit down to the ball. Glad my son has a small edge learning the right way of hitting.

Dropping the bat head on a pitch down in the zone is good but a downward swing is not what Ted said: he said a slight upswing is best and so it is.

I like to get the nob pointing to where a pitcher will paint the corners (pointing the bat head north facing the sky and, the nob facing south pointing to the ground) get the nob through and, then turn the hands. That works for me to think about slow pitch soft ball. Not sure if, that works in baseball.

Interesting video. How about a ken griffey jr swing where the front arm gets quite straight at contact?

    Feel vs real
I FELT like my golf swing was the same as tiger woods circa 1997.
Reality was that I was a 20 handicap who had a nasty slice.

When I was taught about chicken wing it was you are chicken winging when your lead arm interferes with your vision. Was wondering if anyone else was told that. Basically as long as your front arm did not fly up and block your vision you are fine

That "She gone!" guy that always spreads this crap about 'swinging down' simply has no idea how the lower half influences the upper half. He feels like he was swinging down on the ball and so that's all he ever says. Shame he's got such a following honestly.

He’s an idiot. He played 8 years and that’s impressive. So he tells anyone that doesn’t agree with him they don’t get to have an opinion because they didn’t play. If you say well Austin Riley is 25 and in 3 years had almost passed you in WAR and he agrees with me. So he’s better, so his opinion is more important right? He says he’s a freak and we can’t do what he does lol.

The MT “feel” could be more about controlling the elbow and keeping it tight or keeping it from leaking up or out.

I don't disagree, but I do hate how everyone over exaggerates the downward swing when showing it. You show a massive downward chop, nobody teaches that. Make the down as gradual as you make the up and there can be success. It's downward in the first part of the swing and then starts slight upward as the bat crosses the midline of the body in approach to the ball.
Look at cal ripken Jr. And tell me he doesn't work downward sometimes. Most guys don't, but it can work

  • @wukus1962

Can’t talk about front arm mechanics without explaining arm abduction from body. If you only say lead arm has to work up. The hitter may interpret that as lead arm also works away from body. All great hitters get 90 degree front arm abduction at toe tap. Then rotation with proper spine angle will allow elbow to work up. Proper front arm mechanics controls knob. Proper knob control leads to proper barrel 90 degree early connection. With that said it only makes sense lead arm 90 degree abduction will result in 90 degree early connection. Early connection is the angle the barrel is related to the back at toe tap.

I thought the so-called “chicken wing” swing references a disconnected upper body pulling the bat through the zone. It’s not referring to the position of the lead arm. It happens that a chicken wing swing - because the upper body is disconnected - results in the lead elbow looking prominent and high.
Whether one prescribes to the orthodox view of “staying on top of the ball” or the newer approach, the chicken wing swing is neither since the orthodox and newer approach promote a connected swing.
Also the orthodox swing does not involve a swing where the front elbow is down to stay on top of the ball. If one swings with the lead elbow down, it’s not possible to extend the top hand long through the zone. An elbow down swing is a pull down just as an elbow up can be pull up. Both are no good. Getting a good whip requires the top hand to push the knob straight and long in the zone.
Btw… recently came across a video of Juan Soto telling kids to stay on top of the ball. Evidently, he is reforming his swing to align it to the orthodox approach.

Not sure why people still teach swinging down. Makes more sense to have the hand path across the letters, especially for a high pitch.

The knob has to go towards the ball.

Sorry but that is one of the worst cues you can give to a young hitter. If you take the knob to the ball you are casting your hands in a straight line. The bat bath is circular, the knob arches around your waist, bringing the barrel to the ball. The knob actually moves away from the ball well before contact in order to get the barrel through the hitting zone.

    • @centurionhomeinspectionsin2253
      @centurionhomeinspectionsin2253 2 роки тому

@@digitalmdrealmd9124 at the start of the swing, you load, start your torso and your hands must lag-be pulled to the ball. The knob to the ball is just the start. Hands inside, hands above, back elbow in and bent at contact and then extend after and follow up and around. I’m pretty damn good and working with HS hitters.

you load, start your torso and your hands must lag-be pulled to the ball. Hands inside, hands above, back elbow in and bent at contact and then extend after and follow up and around.
Thats a sound description of getting the barrel to the ball. In order to stay "inside" the ball, the hitter has to keep his back elbow and hands tucked near the body. If you tell a hitter to take the knob or hands to the ball most will take it as pushing his hands/knob out toward the ball as he torques through the swing which is one of the worst things a hitter can do. If you manage to get your guys to hit with this cue so be it; i cringe when even mlber's throw it out there. However, what actually happens in the swing and what is being stated are opposite actions. There's no way to "take the knob to the ball" while also keeping the back elbow and hands tucked.

@@digitalmdrealmd9124 I’m happy for you. I think my reply in how I teach is in line with your approach. The knob to the ball is just to get them moving that way. I am fully aware you can’t keep your hands inside the ball if you literally try to throw the knob to the ball.
