  • Bobby Bowden is the greatest coach in the history of college football and not only because of his record on the field, but the respect he has earned for his actions off of it.
In an emotional scene in the film We Are Marshall, an example of one of those actions was seen, showing just how much of a class act Bobby Bowden has always been and tried to spread to so many others.

That first-class Coach passed away today, August 8, 2021. May all those who loved him, respected him, and admired him, count this depiction of his character as both an enduring bit of his legacy and a beacon of inspiration for a life well-lived. Do what’s right and perhaps even your cameos in life can inspire and guide. Rest well, Coach.

One of the best. He will be missed. He knew how to handle Deion Sanders and maximize his potential and he knew that a genius like Myron Roelle also needed time off to take MCATs and is now a renowned neurosurgeon. He knew what was best for his kids and players not just the program. God bless him and RIP!

During Bowden's first year as head coach at WVU, the football team of the state's other top-division school, Marshall University, were killed in a plane crash. He asked NCAA permission to wear Marshall jerseys and play Marshall's final game of the 1970 season against Ohio, but was denied. In memory of the victims of the crash, Mountaineers players put green crosses and the initials "MU" on their helmets. Bowden allowed Marshall's new head coach Jack Lengyel and his assistants access to game film and playbooks to acquaint themselves with the veer offense, a variation of the option offense which aids teams with weak offensive lines. Lengyel credits Bowden with helping the young Thundering Herd recover. Bowden reportedly became emotional while viewing the movie We Are Marshall, and has said that he was the original candidate for the Marshall head coaching job filled by crash victim Rick Tolley.

I read that Bobby Bowden also was very generous to Nebraska some seasons before they met each other on the field. Bobby actually sent a couple coaching assistants to Nebraska, (possibly to put on a clinic) mainly to help them increase their speed on defense, that would later be one of the keys to victory against Miami and Florida in the championship games of the 1994 and 1995 season. Bobby Bowden represented true sportsmanship, unlike the egomaniacal circus you see happening with Coach Prime these days.

A friend of mine wanted to play at FSU. Growing up in Jacksonville FL, alot of us did. My friend Randy was a very good, but not FSU good. He did however receive an offer from the Air Force academy. One day Coach Bowden came to out school to recruit, this was early 80's. Randy saw him and asked if he could have a minute to talk to him. Bobby Bowden spent an hour and a half with him. Talking and giving him advice. He told Randy, now dadgummit boy if the sir force is calling, why, you just gotta go! They offering you not just an education but a career boy!! You git to do this!
Randy tool his advice and went to Air Force. Made a career of it. Flew F-15C'S for over 20 years and now is a senior captain for Delta. He saw Coach Bowden speak in a church 10 years later and approached him. Bobby Bowden remembered him. Randy gave him some squadron patches and a cap. Randy said coach Bowden was over the moon hearing how it turned out.

Back when ranks heavily favored huge point spreads, even if FSU had the ability to run up the score Bobby didn't. He'd sub out the first string for the second and third team players. We'd still win but it wasn't a 77 to 0 game.

I met Coach Bowden at the Miami Cruise Terminal in 2004. We were both waiting for a transfer bus to the airport. We started talking as two would do waiting for a bus, our wives, etc. After a few minutes, I told him I knew who he was and thought he was a fantastic Coach. I had heard about the story depicted in this scene from a friend that was a huge FSU fan. I asked him about it and he said to me, "It was the right thing to do! We all traveled on small planes back then and that could have happened to any team." Solid answer from a class act!

This scene gets a little "Hollywood." From imdb: "In spring 1971, Jack Lengyel and Red Dawson approach WVU football coach Bobby Bowden for use of his "veer" formation. Dawson says the two schools "are rivals." Bowden agrees to help, saying "We don't play y'all this year." WVU and Marshall are basketball rivals; they hadn't played each other in football since 1923, and didn't again until 1997."
But the crosses and MU on the helmets are factual.

Ferrum College, formerly Ferrum Junior College, awards The Big Green Award to the football player that best demonstrates the qualities of courage, hustle, and desire as a role model for his fellow teammates. The award is named for Marshall University's primary color; green. Why? The 1970 Marshall Head Coach Rich Tolley, was a former Ferrum assistant. Coach Tolley brought seven Ferrum players with him to Marshall. All were part of Ferrum's 1968 Junior College National Championship team. All perished in the tragic plane crash in 1970. This is the most prestigious award a Ferrum player can be awarded. The new weight room is named for Coach Tolley and the Ferrum 7 (Thomas Brown, David Griffith, Patrick Norrell, James Patterson, Arthur Shannon, Jerry Stainback, and Thomas Zborill). In 2007 We are Marshall was previewed before its premiere at Ferrum College. Both school's will be always tied together by tragedy, loss, and camaraderie. Go Panthers, Go Herd!

As a live long Florida State fan, Bobby Bowden holds a special place in my heart. He has done so much for my community and our university. He is one of the purists, most down to Earth Southern Gentlemen you could ever meet.

We ran the veer in high school, early 2000’s. Can definitely win with it but you need a QB who can really read defense well and is super athletic. We were top 5 in the state rankings but QB got hurt and we were done.

Bobby Bowden actually interviewed for the Marshall head coach job but declined and went to WVU instead. Rick Tolley eventually took the Marshall job and was killed along with his team in the plane crash.

Bobby Bowden made a huge impact on and impression on Deion Sanders, you may think Coach Prime is a little too flashy or cocky, but he has a fatherly coaching side that was influenced by Bowden. Under head coach Bobby Bowden, Sanders was a two-time consensus All-American cornerback in 1987 and 1988, Bowden would later state that Sanders was his "measuring stick for athletic ability".

It was a true example of how the game is bigger then anything. Following that plane crash while they were rebuilding the team Bowden didn't care about rivalry or sharing team information with another school he saw that they were trying to put a team on the field in the most impossible circumstances and would not stand in the way. One fact that was not covered by this movie that would have shattered the disbelief of Bowden allowing them to watch film was that after the Plane crash Bowden petitioned the NCAA to allow his west Virginia team to wear Marshalls jerseys and allow them to play Marshalls final game of the season against Ohio (At the time of the plane crash Marshall had 1 game remaining on their schedule). True character great man true lover of the game.
