Went to high school with 2 players that were on that plane. To this day they are remembered with their pictures on the scoreboard. Lyndhurst High School
Let me just say that the script this movie--and I have never said this about one, single other film I've seen, EVER--is sheer PERFECTION. Not a word out of place, or substitution for another word required. Simply, perfectly, beautiful.
It's a powerful, effective speech because it was Jack Lengyel's way of communicating how he finally understood the gravity of Marshall University's loss but also believed that victory, at least in the interim, lay in keeping the football program alive in spite of the tragedy.
When this tragedy struck, I’d never heard of Marshall nor even of Huntington . I’ve lived in the Huntington area for the last 25 years and know people who lost loved ones in that tragedy. And yet - Huntingtonians are resilient and Marshall University stands tall. I’m proud to have inherited part of this heritage from this community, and proud to share the tears and triumph exemplified in “We Are Marshall “.
My favourite inspirational speech from this video is : Lay your head on the line until the final whistle is blown. If you do that we cannot lose. This is your opportunity to rise from these ashes and grab glory"
For those of you who may not know, this is the final resting place for six members of the 1970 Thundering Herd. The plane crash that took their lives was so severe, so absolute, that their bodies were unable to be identified. So they were buried here. Together. Six players. Six teammates. Six Sons of Marshall. This is our past, gentlemen. This is where we have been. This is how we got here. This is who we are.
When you take that field today, you've got to lay that heart on the line men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows. And if you do that, if you do that, we cannot lose. We may be behind on the scoreboard at the end of the game but if you play like that we cannot be defeated.
This is very surreal to me...I grew up in this area and used to walk up to Spring Hill Cemetery to the MU memorial (and graves of the six unidentified) to be alone, chill and reflect...
Now we came here today to remember six young men and sixty-nine others who will not be on the field with you today, but they will be watching. You can bet your ass that they'll be gritting their teeth with every snap of that football. You understand me? How you play today, from this moment on is how you will be remembered. This is your opportunity to rise from these ashes and grab glory.
Great speech, AMAZING speech actually. You also cannot ignore matt's subtle representation of his alumi Texas. Such as the burnt orange sports jacket ;)
reminds me of how do we do things together thank goodness for football clear eyes and full hearts cant lose when no school has accpeted a young man that is over looked sometimes in the city where he grew up line upon line and precept upon precept. two thirds will join one third has to figure out in your own reality
Today, I want to talk about our opponent this afternoon. They're bigger, faster, stronger, more experienced and on paper, they're just better. And they know it too. But I want to tell you something that they don't know. They don't know your heart. I do. I've seen it. You have shown it to me. You have shown this coaching staff, your teammates. You have shown yourselves just exactly who you are in here.
The Marshall/Huntington Tri State (OH/WV/KY) area has taken a lot of harsh punches and cruel tragedy over the years. The Silver Bridge collapse a few years before this. Economic misery. Various mine diasters. But you know what, this speech says it all. Still standing baby !
MickeyMorandini1 I grew up in south east Ohio bout 30 minutes up river from Huntington, Marshall football was life. Coach Pruitt era was my childhood. Watching those teams win game after game, championship after championship. What a time to be alive.
Great speech but in a real life we don’t have emotional music playing in the background to influence the motivation. Remove the music and listen to the words . Does it have some the same impact.
The Super Psycho Killer why would you even need to go there? I thought Matthew McConaughey was a shit actor until I saw him in this role. And then, my opinion changed. Who brought Brad Pitt into this?

My uncle David Dearing Griffith is one of the six.

Imagine Brad Pitt in the role of Matthew McConaughey. The movie would suck. Brad Pitt is a shit actor.
The Super Psycho Killer why would you even need to go there?
I thought Matthew McConaughey was a shit actor until I saw him in this role.
And then, my opinion changed.
Who brought Brad Pitt into this?

Please try to troll better.
the movie miracle is ten times better
They are exactly the same. Corny watered down version of a cool sports story.
The real tragedy here is that Matthew Mcconaughey completely ruined this script writer's inspirational speech.
