@@Featheon lol the show was full of fast cuts & jump cuts, that was part of its flashy editing style... Not because of bad acting in a scene. Idk how one who watched the series could miss something so obvious.
I know this series is “altered for dramatic effect”, but it does feel good watching these stories unfold when basketball rivalries ran deep and hard. Love it! And everyone cast totally brings the essence of the real person they are portraying.
I think a lot of the former players were in denial about how inaccurate Winning Time was because of their personal image. If you read books and articles about them, you can see that Jerry West and Kareem specifically were more or less the people they were in the show.
I've been an Adrian Brody fan for a long time, and it never seems like he gets much love anymore. But this dude can act. I'm was really happy he was able to be in this show. He is the most Pat Reily, since Pat Reily.
This was a great scene, Pat Riley is showing his team he’s not a pushover he’s a coach for a reason by having leadership, discipline, and balls of calling out everyone in the locker room. Awesome speech
@@foxmccloud7055 While I understand what you're saying, Riley was doing this in an environment where the players had the power to get the last coach fired. There was no such thing in the NCAA then; guys like Knight and Krzyzewski (who both started at Army) could run the programs like fiefdoms and pull the scholarship of anyone they wished. Players couldn't even transfer schools without the last coach's permission.
West, I'm sure, is proud of Riley. He was known to be explosive and impatient about winning. And then Riley emerged from the shadow to prove himself. When they were teammates, West was the top dog on the team, Riley was a bench player. It's like Michael Jordan being Steve Kerr's assistant coach.
And I remember how Jerry West stood up to Laker team owner Dr. Jerry Buss once. Early in the 1986/87 NBA season, Dr. Buss was about to do a handshake deal with Dallas Maverick team owner Don Carter. Plan wasa to trade Lakers James Worthy to the Mavericks for Mark Aguire. Jerry West told Dr. Buss that he himself would resign on the spot if Buss were to actually execute such a trade. The threat worked,, as NO trade was made,, and the Lakers went onto winning the next 2 NBA Championships.
The build up to this scene made it land so hard. The confusion around who was the coach after Westhead was fired. Riley having more of a friendship with the players because of how he was with them while he was the assistant. The following montage of the Lakers on fire with Grease playing in the background was a great way to cap it.
And then it kind of happened again with the Miami Heat and Erik Spoelstra, when he went from video coordinator, assistant coach, then head coach. Riley appears to be like a clone of Red Auerbach. He's a player's coach, friendly with the guys, always finding ways to connect, but he also knows when to lay it down.
Adrian Brody doing his stuff and great as always, plus I really like the retro 1970's cinematography recreated here and it looks authentic, kudos to those who did that as well.

You know, I can’t think of a series better executed than this one. I watched it on a whim, i know nothing about baseball, but the acting, storytelling, cinematography, and heart. It’s on another level. If this gets forgotten I’ll be disappointed.
Adrian Brody does an excellent job at Pat Riley. One thing I appreciate about Riley is he was always grateful for the roles Jack McKinney and Paul Westhead had in him becoming the Lakers HC. McKinney's unfortunate accident elevated Riley to assistant and Riley continued running McKinney's "Showtime" offense, which he always credited to Jack. Riley was good friends with Westhead and cared about him. While I'm sure he was happy to become the head coach, he also was sad about his friend losing his job, and also made sure to let Magic know he was partially responsible for Westhead getting fired.
I do not believe you can get better casting than this series has. Adrian has the added touch of the cigarette and himself meaning business. I hope Adrian knows he has many fans young and old out there. Amazing range of talent.
Just incredible. One of the best “arrival” scenes for a character in modern media/certainly television… It’s the moment Riles became Pat fuckin Riley, and the Lakers became Showtime…and you can *feel* it.
One of the greatest tv scenes I’ve ever watched. If you had watched up to this point in the season, Riles had been such a pathetic, sorry character, a shell of the “Pat Reilly” we know and love. Riley didnt have nearly the talent in NY that he did in LA. NY expected him to bring Showtime to NY....however you need the horses to run Showtime (which The Knicks clearly did not have). Riley is a perfect example of a coach tailoring his coaching...around the talent he has. Those Knicks teams had the personnel to play tough defense/half court offense...and he squeezed every bit of effort out of that bunch. They just happened to run into Jordan's Bulls...and a Houston Rockets team that turned out to be too much offense for them.
Yea, I guess it was well known he was a quiet laid back person, and shortly after he became he literally did a character shift on life and completely became a new person. I love his character arc in here, and from what I've read, it's pretty accurate
