    Owning physical media is yours and will have always access to it streaming you don't own it and if the studio does not renew the license to the streaming services then they pull the movie and you won't have access to it again. I'm a collector so i always buy physical media

    Don't forget CENSORSHIP. There are movies being edited because someone got offended, and studio cowards are censoring movies and TV shows to appease the offended parties.
    Example: The first Spider Man movie. The scene where Peter is using his powers as a wrestler to make money. He jumps up, and trash talks the pro wrestler Bonesaw, "That's a cute outfit, did your husband buy it for you?" This scene has been "altered" so now Peter only says, "That's a cute outfit."
    If someone is so offended - be it a book, movie, radio show, TV show, music album, or play, they have the options of changing the channel, turning the player off, or just not picking up the media in question.

    • @JakeHageman

      There's definitely a point to this. Censorship is all sorts of wack. I think we can deviate from a style of speech/comedy with completely cutting it out. If we censor our history, how do we learn from it? If we censor our art, what can we get from it?

    To me, it makes more sense to just buy the DVD/Blu-Ray/4K UHD, instead of having every streaming service and maybe not even having that movie available. Plus I love having the cases on display on my shelf.

    Reason number 5: Special features and audio commentary. I've noticed that if and when any of these things are included on streaming services (they often aren't), they are treated sloppily and the best special features, like in depth interviews with participants of the film making process, are non-existent.

    When I moved out of my parents house at 20yrs old i brought with me my collection of 1200 VHS tapes and about 100 DvDs. When I moved again, now with 2 children and a lot more actual "stuff" I was forced to ditch about 1000 of the VHS tapes because we simply did not have the room for them in our new home. Whilst my local second hand shop was delighted with the donation I myself was almost physically sick. There were movies in that collection that I have never seen available on DvD since. My current DvD/BlueRay collection is only about 200 strong and I miss my wall of movies so much 😞

    i like to have total control of the stuff i bought. my oldest disc is from 1998, paid once long ago and still have the access 25 years later. perfectly manufactured discs should last a really long time. that disc from 98 live longer than many websites and went through so many digital changes, and still supported in latest Windows update. my biggest fear is that if manufacturers dont make discs as robust anymore though the packaging get fancier than ever.

    You are DEFINITELY not alone Jake. I'm totally agree with you 100%, man. I have NEVER bought anything digital (games included) and if I have (which would be rare), it's because it's not available physically. I'm sorry but all these people that are saying 'oh but digital is the way of the future and it's just so much more convenient' and crap like that, well firstly I hope you like it when your digital content you PAID for gets deleted from the servers of where you bought it from, because here's the thing. You paid for a 'temporary license' to buy your content (you don''t believe me, go and read the ToS attached to said game/product. It says it CLEARLY in black and white). Not a perpetual license so you can own it forever (yes there IS a difference for people that are also going to give the argument for PC software, especially photo editing software from publishers OTHER THAN those greedy pigs at Adobe). And secondly, for those people that are going to give the 'convenience' argument for digital, but I'm sorry but that's just sheer laziness in my opinion. How hard is it to go over there to a DVD/Blu-Ray Player or console and put a disc in so you can watch said movie or play said game and OWN it forever? Not to mention actually 'physically' going down to a retailer and picking a DVD/Blu-Ray/game up off of a shelf to SUPPORT brick and mortar retailers and the everyday people that actually 'work' in those places? Not very. Or is it too much of a challenge for some or most?

    • @JakeHageman
      @JakeHageman  5 місяців тому +1

      And the crazy thing is there's not much of a price difference. Most new blu-rays are $25, and purchasing a digital movie is usually $20. And you still get the digital movie with the physical release! What you get for the extra $5 is SO worth it. The physicality means so much. The VHS tapes I grew up watching Star Wars on mean so much more than if I watched them from an iTunes purchase LOL

    100%. I am a big movie lover and saw all the movies from the mid-70s through current in theaters, where they were meant to be seen! I would catch all the classics and movies I missed either on VHS or cable back in the day. And now I have a massive Blu-ray collection exactly for the reasons you mentioned! Technology is a double edge sword. Streaming may be convenient but it takes the joy out of

    After many years of being a pirate, I started buying some of my favorite Blu-ray movies based on my top favorites, my goal is to reach at least my very top 50 movies to this day, maybe some more extras as time passes by and new titles make the top list. i
    Its also crazy i thought pirated movies looked really good on my pc connected to my tv, i mean it never hurt having them for free and having the honor to watch any movie I want once they are available but I thought i was downloading the best quality yet, really did not know the impact of popping a blueray on my ps4, extremely noticeable details.
    So yeah, now that bluray is realively cheap thats one of my goals for this and the upcoming 2024.

    I recently got into movie collecting and I've spent over $1200 but now I have over 240 films including over 40 in 4K. Feels amazing to own my favorite movies in the best or second best quality available. One movie in particular that I'm happy with is Anna and the apocalypse. I was lucky enough to see it in theaters with my sister and we loved it right away. Its not available on any streaming service so I decided to purchase it and ended up having to import it from the UK. But now I own it forever and it's beautiful. I don't think it will be gone. Think of how it started. We could only watch movies on cable, then we wanted to own them. VHS became very popular, we could finally own a movie. Then with video on demand people were convinced that they could watch what they wanted when they wanted. Once the stream services start to limit what you can watch, and increase prices, physical media will be demanded again.

    Nice commentary 👍 For me a big draw is also Blu-ray 3D. It's essentially the only way to get films in that format haha. But all of those films are also playable in 2D, so my friends get to understand the appeal as well through my plex server including all my DVDs and 4K lol. One note I know it was a quick explanation but it's worth noting that the video is always compressed. Uncompressed would never fit on a disc haha. Also, audio is nearly always compressed too (except raw PCM), but the difference is that it's typically lossless compression whereas video is never consumed in lossless form.

    In my case one of the main reasons is the quality, the loss of BITRATE in both video and audio is super notable, the DOLBY ATMOS loses a lot of quality, just do a bitrate test of the same movie in the 2 versions, the versions streaming and the physical version in 4K, and you can notice in the numbers the great loss of quality, and of course there is nothing better than being the owner of the movie and being able to watch it whenever you want

It wouldn't be worth it. But I have gotten rid of some movies that I never see myself watching again so there is a few. Having reliable access (especially older movies that I grew up with) are always there. Plus a major reason is sound. It is always, always better on disc no matter what streaming. Disney canned Artemis Fowl. I got to watch it three days before it permanently left streaming. Its not on Physical media either now. I quite enjoyed it. Pity I can't watch it again.

    Two sentences explain why I collect physical media. I own it indefinitely, and I never have to worry about prime video or itunes losing the licensing for my favorite movie. Also, I never have to worry about it moving to a different streaming service.

    I've already collected physical media but i noticed something about the players. I always owned sony bluray players but after heavy usage they eventually have problems. I decided to buy a new one but they were slimmed down with no features and bad quality and parts like the vcrs. I bought 2 sony 4k player just in case the buold quality goes down. Eventually they'll stop making them commercially and pnly high end ones will be available.

      No features?! Sony blueray players have wifi, can stream Netflix and tubi, usb, dvd upscaling, bluetooth......no features?! What are you talking about?

  • @stonesfan285
    @stonesfan285 8 місяців тому

    I collect them because streams are never a sure thing. What I mean is you are buying a 'service' not a product. That service can be turned down at any time for any reason and they don't have to give you a refund. I've already had issues with things I supposedly purchased. At least with the discs, I will always have access provided I have a working player or a computer drive that can rip them. The quality is better too but I'll be honest I never thought streams looked horrible as long as you used a good service like Apple or Vudu. Now Netflix and some others with really low bitrates yeah those ones don't look good. Streaming is all about quantity and convenience, not quality.

      When I recommend a movie, I ALWAYS get asked "what streaming service is it on?" and it's so much fun to say "it's not on one, I just own it". But it always deters them away. They don't know what they're missing sadly

    Also paying for a service for a long time is throwing your money away.
    The day you cancel your service you have nothing.

      It has definitely helped me gain access to films I wouldn't otherwise have. I usually don't buy films until I've seen them, and so having access elsewhere is helpful. Films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest don't have a Blu-Ray release, which makes it hard to find them, but I originally watched it on Netflix.

    the digital dystopia is here. i went on amazon where i have bought almost all of my physical media over the last 10 years and there is none available. i just bought DVDs as late as 2 weeks ago and now there's NOTHING! Its all streaming trash. the stories about your digital purchases disappearing if the stars or directors say or do something bad are going to explode. actors whole careers are being wiped out if they criticize the woke madness is already happening, look at Ryan Reynolds. i wasn't paying attention until like 4 months ago when i saw all the videos warning of this coming. luckily i bought 99% of all the movies i wanted long ago. if you wanted physical media now ebay is your only option. i hope the normy freak who think streaming is the bees knees are happy.
