There's something to be said about having too much at your finger tips in the comfort of your own house. Sometimes suffering the elements to get to the rental store and only renting a movie or two gave you character and made you appreciate the movie more

Oh man. Agree with you guys so much on this. I have a ton of thoughts (most of which you have covered) but I'll focus on one that really ticks me off. Owning your physical media is the only way to keep them from taking it away from you. Everyone thinks they can steam it or if they can't find it streaming, they can buy it digitally. A streaming service losing the rights is frustrating enough. But the thing that I find absolutely unacceptable is any digital media you have purchased can be cancelled by the company and it is gone. We don't own digital media. We are buying a license to access it and that can be taken away.

I would venture to guess that many younger horror fans in particular are probably in a hurry now to collect stuff, if they don't want to solely be relying on streaming in the future because a lot of stuff won't be on there and only available on physical media...

Yeah man same goes with computer software. I sopped paying for plug in synths cause if you computer goes down and you loose your download code or the program won't work on your new OS you're fucked. Hardware as long as you take care of it or doesn't get stolen won't just disappear for no reason.

Hi guys. Love the channel! As far as Star Wars goes, you're 100% correct. At least as far as OFFICIAL releases go. I suggest you Google Project 4k77. Basically, some crazy awesome fans bought 35mm prints of the films and scanned them into digital files. They're incredible. You can put the VHS and laserdiscs away. It's like being in the theatre in 1977. Honestly, even if Disney ever did an official release of the unaltered films, I probably wouldn't buy it because I don't trust Disney to get it right. Project 4k77 is done by the fans, and no one knows the film more than them. Including George Lucas.

I've got some physical media that I'm never parting with. Years ago, I came across somebody selling a reasonably priced DVD-R of Tobe Hooper's Night Terrors for $10. A confused movie, plot-wise, but beautifully filmed. My pride and joy is a German import 2 disc special edition DVD of 1986's The Hitcher. The movie had a terrible DVD release in the US, but the German edition is fantastic. Loaded with special features, commentary, interviews, and a crisp picture that doesn't have that crappy orange color coding to it.
I'm a reader, but I have a system with that. I usually read ebooks, bought for cheap whenever possible. Most are trash, but if it's a treasure (see what I did there?) I'll buy a physical copy, and many, especially 80's horror novels, don't have new print releases, so I track down a used copy. Letters From the Dead is one of my favorites, and reading it in paperback is a different experience. Some books are completely out of print, and you have to buy used. For instance, I have a copy of Ray Russell's Incubus as a used hardcover. Good discussion video. Keep drinking!

Some of this really applies to a lot of the stuff I watch, especially the Italian horror and that sort of thing. I have Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead on DVD and Blu-Ray, but when I was a teen back in the '90s, I used to rent that movie on VHS under the title, The Gates of Hell and I still frequently refer to it as that to this day. Then there are the ones where more than the title was changed, such as Zombie Holocaust/Doctor Butcher MD. I bought an old VHS of Doctor Butcher MD to have that version, which has different music and opening, plus an additional scene shot at a different time. This one has since been released on Blu-Ray, though.
This a bit of a weird point, maybe, but I also kind of miss watching these releases that were taken from those old, beat-up grindhouse prints. I remember watching Fulci's Zombie on VHS for years, before getting nicer, cleaned-up versions, and there was a jump-cut in the end credits where the film probably broke and the print had to be spliced back together. Or just the scratches and all those weird little "flaws" related to old worn-out film prints, which were the sources for many of those earlier VHS releases. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to watch these movies transferred from a clean, restored print, but it is sometimes nice to go back to the old beat-to-hell version. For instance, I have an old VHS of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre (in addition to the VHS version I bought in the '90s when I was in high school). This version I bought because it was the same version I used to see as a kid in the video store and it would have been the version I first rented. I have watched that tape multiple times when I wanted to watch the movie, rather than the DVD version I also had. It was overall more enjoyable as the DVD was an early DVD and those don't always look that great. I have a nice Blu-Ray version that I usually watch now, as my VCR is in storage with my old tube TV.
I had to edit this part in, as I forgot about it. Something that you'd need to go back to VHS for is House By the Cemetery through Vestron Video, which apparently had some of the reels out of order, so the movie makes even less sense than normal. It has been decades since I have seen that version, but I want to get a copy to watch it again, after having watched the correct version for so many years now.

    • @FrightfullyForgotten
      @FrightfullyForgotten  4 місяці тому +1

Totally agree, that some movies just look better gritty and raw rather than super cleaned up. BUT lots of movies look great cleaned up too, Zombie is one example that you don't realize how great the cinematography is until the bluray came out, but it ALSO looks good on gritty vhs.

      A Nightmare on Elm Street
is a good example of that.
      On VHS it's quite dark,
      as it's supposed to be.
The DVD I've got is really bright and looks like an American
      soap opera.
You can see Krueger really clearly
which is not the movie's intent.

For the masses physical media is over. No one is collecting discs to load into a player. And what about the inevitable max out of physical space in your home. No thanks.

That's good if it makes you happy. I think the reality is that we collect things that sit there for years and years and there's this small chance we come back to it. Some day you'll be dead and some family member will have to go through your stuff and donate it to goodwill. Also, people aren't idiots for trying to find original versions of star wars that aren't VHS or laserdisc because that's how we get projects like The Silver Screen Edition, or Project 77, 80, and 83. People have taken different sources of the star wars films, like actual 35mm prints, scanned them in, cleaned them and put them up for free in HD or 4K. I think that is extremely cool and an active form of preservation for the masses, not idiotic. Anyway sorry if that seems like a rant, just a different opinion, I do like your videos a lot and I agree streaming sucks.

Our families at least better try to sell the shit that might be worth something!! Yeah we are aware of the star wars restoration project which is super cool. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Cheers.

I got rid of Netflix years ago, due to price increases, but mostly because there was nothing that I wanted to watch on there.
