- Disney's decision to axe physical media distribution down under might be the beginning of the end of the DVD/Bluray/4K. But should we completely can it just because an alternative has boomed in popularity, or is owning physical copies of your favourite films and shows no longer cool?

If the movie or TV series is a favorite of mine, then I want a physical copy that can’t be edited or deleted by a streaming service. There’s just something about owning a physical copy. I think DVDs will go the route of vinyl records. A niche market will keep it alive, it’s just going to be tough finding the titles you want.
Agreed! There's shows I own that have since fallen prey to cancel culture (Little Britain/Chris Lilley's series') that I'm thankful I purchased at the time because they have since been taken off streaming. I definitely believe particular dvds will become rare and valuable items, so keep them in good condition!

I expect a backlash, because people are getting sick of streaming pulling their titles at random, and now forcing commercials into movies, etc. Greed is going to turn people off of streaming and make them want more control over their viewing again. I'm already seeing a resurgence. Ebooks are also starting to decline in favor of paper copies again. People are wising up.

Books forever. There are so many books vanishing that I find it frightening. Many of them are of a historical nature like The Russian Revolution, Rise of the Fourth Reich, etc. I got a small number of books out of print, luckily. E-books suck. I read many people have a very low opinion of them due to many features missing, errors in conversion etc.
Exactly. I remember when Kindle was billed as the death of books and bookstores.
Yeah guy in Asda said I can watch on Netflix but some films or a lot gets taken of these days plus dvds 📀 have the special features etc

What bothers me most about physical media going away is that older and more obscure films and TV shows will vanish. The way the current model works, movies and shows that few are watching get pulled off streaming services as they must pay a fee to have them available. Some films and shows simply won't be accessible anywhere.

Personally I have decided that any film I know I will want to watch again in the future. I buy on DVD or Blu-ray. I'm tired of the constant struggle of "what streaming service has the movie I want to watch, nevermind I'm tired of looking I'll watch something else."

Yup and if I can't buy it, then I torrent it and burn my own disc. Roll your own basically. And unlike "Made In Mexico" discs, mine aren't scratched or mishandled.
I been noticing the decline of physical media in Australia recently, here's in North America what fortunately keep DVD/Blu-Ray/4K going has been boutique labels like Criterion, Scream Factory, Vinegar Syndrome etc. , securing it into sorta of a niche market. Now, an Australian label called Imprint have been catching collectors' attention abroad with the quality of their catalogue and releases, honestly all you can do is keep supporting physical media and companies like Imprint, it really really does work. Again, here's in North America, Disney+ will be releasing a wave of their exclusives on 4k blu-ray later this year, we're talking Star Wars and Marvel shows that Disney been using to bait people into subscribing. I don't know what the future holds for physical media, but I'm not stopping collecting anytime soon.

I, for one want the physical copy. I believe that Big Corporate considers the sale of a DVD as losing control of their product. They prefer streaming, but the movies I like often disappear from view, you know what I mean, like the "Party" I regard film as literature and have a have of a habit of watching them over and over.
I envision a very compact 100 Terabyte SSD called, "The Motion Picture"
If Big Corporate can't make money, they lose interest.

I fully believe the golden age of streaming is fast coming to an end. The current business model just isn’t sustainable. Too many services are losing money, and raising prices. Not to mention the complaints from actors about the lack of royalties. Eventually you’re going to have to pay a base charge for the service, and then an up charge per movie or season of tv. Once that happens I think you’ll see a resurgence of physical media
Sounds very possible and hope you're right but there are more than enough sheep in the world that will gladly pay higher prices to keep their digital lazy ways.

Right. The buisness model has created problems for the studios, especially when it comes to actors wanting royalties. The raising of prices doesn’t help either. Physical media is best.
This is ridiculous, physical media should not go away whether it's dvd or bluray. It's important to own physical copies of films because you only pay for it once and can watch it whenever you want without having to go through a paywall. And it's also media preservation without being at the mercy of the studio or streaming service who can censor/alter or completely delete it and make it inaccessible to the public, thus the increase of Lost Media. This is greed from Disney and others because they want you to keep on paying money to watch on their platforms and not own the material. I had to go the bootleg route in order to own physical copies of shows I love.

I think we are simply going to see a shift to movies getting licensed out to boutique labels. Disney won't release them but someone like a Criterion might. Disney just doesn't see the money in it and wants to focus on D+ but a boutique label dedicated to physical media will be on the search for movie to license and put out themselves.
It would be nice for an outcome like that, but would it make it to Aus/NZ. We already miss out on lots of local distribution for boutique labels.
Disney has new people in there now and now we're finally starting to see some of stuff getting released and they mainly started releasing physical media to make up for the money lost from the guild strike
The thing about streaming is there is no ownership even though you paid full price for it. Also content from shows can always be modified simply because of cancel culture with public outcry. But DVDs and BluRays are the way to go to watch it without any interruptions or downgrades in image quality.
I was actually upset when the Simpsons went to Disney plus, I really felt special having the dvds, why did Stark Raving Dad get cancelled, that’s a hilarious episode.
The dvds had alot of extra moments I had probably only seen once when the episodes were aired new. They cut alot out in syndication
I've been a Japanese anime fan for almost 20 years for many years I used to buy them on DVD then blu ray, at first Madman Entertainment used distribute the TV shows in individual volumes that was quite expensive to buy for season worth of volumes is usually 7 volumes with 25 episodes would cost $25 to $30 per volume. For 7 volumes it will cost $175 - $210. Then I discovered a loophole it was cheaper to wait for complete season to be released included a box to go with collection for $100 - $120. Today still prefer to watch anime on blu ray.
Anime on Blu-Ray is so expensive. It's a rip-off. I'll pay $10 for a month of cruchyroll instead of paying $200 for SAO or a scalped box set of Nichijou.
@@real1mem3s its actually even more expensive in Japan then what its is in USA and Australia, also physical has no expiry date, you watch it at anytime at your leisure it requires no internet connection, hobbyist like my self like to make most of the equipment setup especially with expensive sound systems, projectors, OLED TVs. Steaming on the other hand is cheaper depending on the internet connection size the image and sound quality can be compromised. If you really want to show your otaku side you still got to have something to show for, if you really care, streaming is still great for a trial but it can be treated like fashion.
@@real1mem3s nichijou the UK version is around $70AUD, sword art online varies as got more episodes along with 4 seasons and 3 movies. For inuyasha I paid around $800aud for inuyasha for complete seasons for complete collection around $100 - $150aud
There is no guarantee that a film won't stop being streamed, even if you've paid for it. I prefer buying a film on DVD or Blu Ray, if I enjoy it.
First, I would like to congratulate you on the video. It is very clear to understand and fun to look at. I'm Brazilian, I lived in Australia for four years and I'd like to share my point of view from here. Here you can practically no longer buy DVDs or Blu-rays in physical stores, only online. And even so, the quantity is very small and we have to deal with imports that come with shipping and very high import taxes. The scenario is not good, whether you are a film or game collector (my case). But what I think is most important is to make it clear that physical media is important and ownership of it is important for everyone, regardless of whether you are a collector or not. What you see out there, especially on UA-cam, are collectors and collectors' points of view valuing physical media, which I believe keeps the general public away from the subject. Ownership and everything related to it is extremely important for everyone, whether a collector or not.
We should cover the discussion more, also bringing in non-collectors.
My boyfriend and I were watching Modern Family on Netflix, we started with the first season and watched it at dinner time... one day we called Neflix and the series was no longer there. We had nothing to do, we simply stopped watching. This would never have happened watching Frasier or Senfield because I have all the seasons on DVD, realize that I don't have these seasons because I'm a collector, I have them simply because I love Frasier and Seinfeld. So you don't need to be a collector to suffer from the drop in availability of physical media. What I mentioned is just a practical case that happens to collectors and non-collectors.
I still think that physical media will not disappear altogether, but will take more niche places, which is a shame.

That being said, as a staunch advocate of collecting said physical media. I have to utterly & completely admit that streaming really sucks in comparison. The non-stop buffering & video quality. The lack of any & all special features. Not to mention the absolutely abysmal title selection across all streaming platforms 👎
No comparison to owning your own copy of what have you, to watch at your every slightest whim.

My internet went out for 7 hours on Black Friday. Having offline media is clutch when you don't have service.
Japan is still a physical media focused so if you visit you can find many western music cd's and particularly vinyl. Hardoff famous for selling preowned items like retro consoles and games also sell preowned vinyl. Bring a second travel luggage.
Losing physical media wouldn't be so bad IF we could actually "own" digital movies and television, like we do with music. If they would allow us to download and upload them to our own personal servers similarly to how we load music onto our phones or DAPs once we purchase something it would be great, but I don't see that happening. Currently, even if you purchase a movie, if the seller loses the rights, you also lose the media.
My movie collection is an extension of myself. When I like something on streaming, but can’t purchase it, I will never form as strong of a connection with it and will likely forget about it entirely.
DVDs won’t go away. They are cheap and pretty decent quality. If vinyl records which are relatively expensive and poor quality are still here, DVDs should hang around for quite a while.
I don't buy nearly as often as I used to but I still have a giant bookcase in my living room full of dvds and blu rays

Excellent video. We are now living in the age of Editorial Tampering. Our words and thoughts must all be pre-filtered before they’re filtered again. And it’s all happening at such frightening speed. I still have novels, records, laserdiscs, and compact discs from the past fifty years and will never part with them because someone decided they were “uncomfortable” to read or watch, or not “woke” enough for a contemporary audience. If you’re offended by the past then remain in the present.

i use both physical media & streaming but i’m more of a huge advocate for physical media as i really only watch something on streaming if i don’t already own a physical copy of it at the time i want to watch it
What baffles me is that neither desktop nor laptop pc have disk readers nowdays, even as an option. So If I want it - I either have build pc myself or buy an external one, which is crazy.
Im with you. Ive been collecting since VHS and i cant imagine not having a curated collection of film and TV on the shelves. Im actually dropping a lot of Streamers right now, because its just too much. Im rotating 2 or 3 at a time for around 3 months and then drop these and go with another couple of streaming. But i wont stop buying DVD, Bluray and 4K.
Greetings from Ireland, I started collecting again about 2 years ago, I don't collect movies, but TV shows, mainly British shows from the 1970s and 1980s, I have 116 shows collected now covering just under 5,000 episodes, the shows I collect are just not on streaming services at all.

I still collect DVDs, but a few years ago I started digitalizing them as well - as MP4s. I realized the DVD player may disappear as VHS players have or that I will eventually upgrade to a television that will no longer have a hook-up to connect a DVD player to. Now I have the DVDs (well, most of them still... downsizing has led to a highly curated collection) as well as a personal digital copy of those movies. The MP4s are on external hard drives and not the cloud. My hope is that my kiddo will at least have a chance to watch these movies as I saw them some day.
Physical ownership will always be my thing. However, due to the current state of TV and movies, I find that there is almost nothing worth watching, so that makes the decision to forgo physical media pretty easy.
I hate streaming services. They keep movies out of getting more popularity in big screen movie theaters, and created a big misconception that owning physical copies of your movies and television shows is outdated/no longer in style, especially for nerds and historians whose rooms have gotten too messy from buying and owning too many earlier vintage versions of classic films. I love watching special features from DVDs! Watching deleted scenes, seeing how the films get made, bonus feature games, etcetera. There is still more demand for DVDs and DVD players than you think. Besides, DVDs have one big advantage that streaming services never let their viewers and consumers have. You can take your DVDs to watch at any other home with another friend who has a DVD player, whereas streaming services like Netflix limit password sharing. Bob Iger needs to stop riding everything on getting consumers to watch Disney+ when there is still plenty of demand for various editions of DVDs for movies they have made in years and decades past.
It really hate what Disney did to the Collectors of Austraila and New Zealand but i don't think that Physical Media is gonig to Obsolete it's just no longer Mainstream that's all and i will never give up buying my Favorits on DVD, BLURAY and 4K ☝🧐

I'm really excited that some streaming originals are getting physical releases I picked up 1923 (Paramount+) on Bluray from Walmart. Pre-ordered WandaVision and The Mandalorian (Disney+) from Disney Movie Club as well as Weird: The Al Yankovic Story from Shout Factory.
Hopefully this continues because they further viewership statistics and give the streamers a better idea of the audience. I'd like to see the Grease series from Paramount on DVD since it was dumped so suddenly and disappeared from the streamer.
Unfortunately the Disney Movie Club is becoming US only, We have been members for years and on the 26 Sept 2023 the Disney Movie Club will no longer be available in Canada.

And I got The In Between (2022, w/Joey King) on DVD at the one in Simpsonville-- it's one of 6 I have on physical media of that remarkable (IMO) Hollywood star.

I used to collect movies. I used to re-watch movies. These days, I hardly have any movies I actually want to watch again. I'm more of a "show me something fresh" kind of guy now. A fresh, to me, sometimes means movies decades old that I just never saw until now.
The region free blu ray player makes it possible to watch almost everything.

Indeed. It's starting to get difficult to buy physical media. Especially 4K discs. Lots of them don't release in Europe and import options are more limited and expensive as time goes on.
Even with having a physical DVD collection, it won't last forever.
Quite a few of my childhood DVDs are already suffering from partial "disc rot".
Which is why even though I do still buy new and used dvds. If the used dvd disc has signs of "Disc rot" or is majorly scratched to hell, I always back it up digitally for personal use.
If a disc skips or freezes a lot, backing it up digitally will remove the issue entirely. As the digital copy will have no skipping or freezing.
Nice one. Having the option to back it up by having the physical copy in the first place is important. I'm not seeing wear on any of my dvds at this stage. Some would be approaching 20 years old.
That's why all such media should be recorded on M-Discs for archiving to make sense.
It's possible that as streaming services introduce ads and crank prices up the physical media market may recover a little, steaming services are losing a lot of money and they're struggling to bring in new subscribers and I can't see this changing, they might start looking for additional revenue streams.
Netflix has already started this with their lower-tier pricing so I can definitely see the others following, especially if the actors and writers win the right to collect royalties from streaming. The streamers won't survive of subscriptions alone forever, that's for certain.

I'm in the UK where the number of people subscribing to streaming services is going down which is not surprising, once you've got through what you want to see on a service they become poor value for money.
I, too, found it ever harder to maintain my collection of classic prose on goat skin scrolls ever since that newfangled printing press started threatening traditional media.
As was basically said by others I think people will get fed up with the streaming services pulling stuff randomly, not Knowing if what they like will be there when they go to watch their favorite stuff. Plus with all the streaming sites it's expensive to have more then a couple but one needs to be signed up to more then just like three or four streamers to get a halfway decent selection one likes. It's not like the old days where all you need is Netflix and maybe a cheaper streamer to get good choice. Even if a few of the streaming sites collapse or merge or and otherwise we get less choice we won't go back to the days where there's only a few choices so it'll still be expensive. So between the not trusting if what one truly likes will always be there and the shear number of streamers something will change. I hope it does go back to some sort of regular home media releases. Even if it's a similar setup to the old Disney vault thing where a movie is available to buy new for a limited time every so often, I think that might be a compromise.
Someone gave me Darksiders 2, but it just had a DVD of Seinfeld in it instead. However, I shall preserve it though for the future of mankind regardless.
If I'm buying second hand I always check for authenticity (and scratches) if possible

I’m actively collecting DVD copies of my favourite older films - why? Because certain streaming platforms have started censoring older content, in case a modern sensitive type gets offended. Positively Orwellian…….
I always love to own physical copy of a movie and tv show, there bonus features wouldn't get elsewhere otherwise. Same with live concerts of some bands. A lot of times with streaming you can't certain movies or they take away certain movies or stop showing tv shows i were getting into or movies too . Its about having it there for your convenience and disposal really

I honesty liked it when they offered DVD+HD DVD+ Bluray+ Digital download all in one. I could keep the physical copies, download the digital version as another layer of redundancy.
When a friend wants to "borrow" a movie, its a lot easier to hand them a USB thumbstick with a copy of it that you know you'll most likely never see again. Thumb sticks arent that bad to replace, physical media on the other hand...

Hello, at least in your country they still sell movies. In my country they hardly sell anywhere anymore. Since last year, most stores stopped selling movies and CDs. Like you, I have to buy and pay for shipping from another country. It also hurts me that the physical format will no longer be sold. I rented Disney plus for a month and I didn't like it. I rent Netflix once a year. Collecting movies, vinyl and CDs is very nice. The only bad thing I see is that it takes up a lot of space. But other than that, the extinction of the physical format hurts a lot. Thank you very much for your video!
I'm in USA, only collect horror and I'm into not Disney. But it's a hard blow for fans down under. Over here physical media has diminished in stores movie sections are smaller now. But on-line boutique labels have flourished. I think this is because a lot of people are streaming everything nowadays and younger collectors buy mostly on-line. So stores have diminished their physical media sections. Why would they have rows and rows of racks of movies if people buy them on-line? Even more puzzling I watch these young you tuber's videos in which they go movies hunting to stores and rant when movies are not available when they ordered said movie on-line already!🤔 They're part of the issue they're complaining about. Those online boutique labels are not really a thing here so I'm envious, there's plenty of titles I need to spend more on to get shipped from the USA/UK because they were never released here or never had a collector's edition available. There's also many regional centres in Aus that don't have great internet, so physical media is a better option than streaming.

I don't think so. I never collected DVDs before now, never even browsed them when I went to an electronics retailer or thrift shop. But now? Of course I do, because now there are so many streaming services, and so many of those services have locked films behind paywalls. Wanna watch a movie? oh too bad it's 4 bucks! Now, I've resorted to buying dollar copies from thrift and seconds just to watch a movie. There are also some really obscure ahorror and indy titles that are quite uncommon and have some rockin artwork.
disney sucks. people who treat entertainment like throwaway content won't miss dvd or physical media if it's forcibly taken away. collectors will always prefer physical media.

I am a fan of stereoscopic films.. nowadays the only way to watch them is Blu-ray 3D, and most are out of print. It is becoming increasingly tough to find the remaining titles!

Over in Britain and Ireland, they are releasing The Little Mermaid live action remake on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K same goes for Elemental.
I'm mostly not interested in collecting DVD as was born a bit to late for that and the ones that did were my father but he also stop purchasing them after a lot of brick & mortar store that sells DVD are closed indefinitely. But what I really interested in collecting physical copies of video games as i was within the demography of those teenagers that played during the Xbox 360/PS3 era of gaming. After not being able to play some of those games either due to not being able to afford one or were not allowed by my parents, I'm now are able to buy those physical games. When you speak about The Simpsons I cant believe the day I was able to get The Simpsons the Game for the Xbox 360 as that game come out in 2007 and were quite difficult to get a hold of later over the years. After reading the news that the 360 market will be closing signalling the end of the console, I now in a bit of a rush to get a hold to some of the games that I want before those will be more difficult & expensive later. It a share physical media has come out to this.
I still have my ps2 copy of Simpson's Hit and Run. One of the best games ever!
Disney are still releasing movies on Blu Ray here in the UK, you can import from over here because our Blu Rays are Region B just like yours! You might also want to be on the look out for American titles that support Region B as well as Region A: because the Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers US Blu Ray is region free, I imported! I absolutely despise the thought of a digital-only future! I feel we have every right to own a hard copy each of our favorite movies, TV shows, albums and games! Not to mention, it's often nice to buy DVDs and Blu Rays while on vacation, I own Pokémon, Ninja Turtles, SamSam and The Loud House DVDs from France, purchased (either) while I and/or family members were visiting! In the case of Ninja Turtles, this being the 80s/90s cartoon, my French DVDs were the only legal way to own the featured episodes at the time! Furthermore, because you Aussies got Sing 2, Minions 2 and Strange World on 4K Blu Ray but us Brits didn't, I imported! Let's keep physical media alive by buying as much as we can!

Also,. what are people going to do with 4k TVs and true surround systems? A streamed 4k does not look nearly as good as from a 4k player.

A burn on demand model might be best for physical media of both movies and music in the future, similar to print on demand services right now, like Redbuble and Zazzle.
People are buying vinyls again, dvd and bluray will never die. It will however likely become more and more niche to the point where one day it'll only be possible to buy them online and in a handful of second hand stores and bookstores
The argument for Physical media should fall under the banner of *'OWNERSHIP'* and a 'RIGHT TO OWN' act be developed.

ALL corporate publishers MUST at least provide an offline DRM-Free option be it physical media or DRM-Free ditial to consumers for all media/games for the duration for that media/software sales life.
Publishers can charge extra to cover costs etc...but they must make the option easy and accessible for consumers.
Consumers will be informed of this option and understand what they BUY they own and functions more or less the same as when they bought it. i.e. is independent of corporate servers and services to operate. NOT DRM.
Preservation and backups for personal use will be left to the responsibility of the consumers.
The answer is piracy. Make sure images of these DVDs/Blu-Rays stay publicly accessible in some form forever.
Yes and no. Piracy can keep a film alive, however not paying for an official copy means there's less chance more films can be made. It's also illegal haha. I'll always support the artist if I'm passionate about tge product.
I was a big vhs fan. And didn’t want dvds to remove vhs’s but I did like when you got one you had great menu screens, bonus features and extra episodes. I hope one day we return to vhs but I’m glad we take care of dvds more then when they first appeared.
I do think VHS will have a similar comeback to cassettes and vinyl. We already know of many VHS titles (including Disney!) That are rare and worth alot if you have kept them

In this day and age, there is zero excuse not to have an archive readily available of all human knowledge and art. The fact that some pieces of art have been lost to time because people didn't see fit to archive it is a very disappointing part of our history, but understandable in the days before computers. But nowadays, when you can store thousands of hours of 4k footage in a small box, it's inexcusable. At the very minimum, this should be available to download. 'But that would just make it easier to pirate.' So what's the studio's solution? Make piracy the only option, and then make zero money out of it.

Had a guy tell me 15 years ago that dvds will die soon and blurays will take over. BTW i still have some vhs tapes from over 20 years ago that still work fine, as well as audio cassettes from nearly 50 years ago that still function perfectly
Fantastic! DVD has definitely held its own against bluray but they coexist well. Definitely hold onto those cassettes

Those films that you mentioned from the 70s aren't even available on there original 16mm film prints.
For a lot of people it's more convenient to pay $120+ a year to watch movies and TV shows rather than hunting down a box set of a show they might not even like. Or a movie they'll only watch once or twice for $10. It just isn't financially responsible to spend money on brain rot media.
The current streaming model is hemorrhaging money, so who knows, physical media may start to see a resurgence in some form if several of these services crash and burn.

I recently shot on double 8mm film and was going to develop it until I realized that it costs $50 to get movie film done. So for about a month it has been sitting in my fridge so it doesn’t expire 😂
I've had super 8 films transferred to DVD that were my grandfathers. Its a costly process but very much worth it
@@roadtonowherefilms my grandfather transferred all of his old VHS tapes over to DVD. In doing so, he discovered tapes he forgot about and found footage that was truly amazing.
I won't pay to rent via streaming. If I'm paying I want to own a copy. One that can't be censored or edited.

Mando is coming out here in the states. So already has Cinderella 4K, and soon Snow White 4k. For James Bond there must be a contractual reason why the 4K discs beyond the Daniel Craig films, haven't happened yet. They are available digitally. As for sales The Flash has been selling well even if it flopped in theaters.
Good to hear! Amazon has rights to Bond now I think, but usually they release a new boxset every few years. I had the pre Daniel Craig set and have just purchased blurays of the films since.

One way I think could at least keep the physical video media going is a revival of VHS and VCRs. Horror film fans would definitely cash in on this.
Absolutely, and some of the most rare and high priced VHS out there right now are certain Disney releases

In the UK, we have seen a downturn in streaming services, but that's mainly due to people cutting back due to the cost of living crisis.
And content that is streamed is COMPRESSED so you never get the best sound & picture.
psychical is much better than streaming as you always have to movie and they can disappear from the streaming services

in the last 12 years I have spent around 2k just on netflix ! I wish I had just put the $ into my collection :(. I cancelled all my streamin now and hunt flea markets and thrift stores to fill out what I have.

Where I live, I almost go every weekend to one or two of these stores to go DvD-/Blu-ray-hunting.
I've found a lot of rare DvD's, but there are still some I have to buy online, like:
In The Mouth Of Madness, The Outsiders, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Westworld and Futureworld,
The Akira Kurosawa box-sets, Action Jackson, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, Summer Rental, etc.
But a lot of these DvD's/Blu-Rays are quite rare and expensive.
I now have quite a movie and TV-show collection. And because of this, I'm planning to cancell at the end of this year or at the end of next year, my subsciptions to the streaming services Netflix and Viaplay. I know I'll miss out on new content at these streaming services, but increasingly, I'm not really content with the quality of a lot of these new movies and TV-shows.
Lots of thrift stores around me and I'm always having a gander! I have found titles here and there, but you also need to be checking the quality of the disc. Sometimes they're so scratched up that there's no point in buying 2nd hand.
Will definitely become more of a niche market. I think that JB is the only store to sell new discs. And CEX and Op Shops for old/used titles. JB is even removing DVDs and CDs from their stores that are not in shopping centres. Have been buying titles that I want from JB since the Disney announcement. Have also been picking up a lot from op shops.
I think that Disney is only the first to stop distribution here. Paramount and Universal may well follow.
Umbrella is a good local imprint. Will be ordering more from the USA in future. Sad days as I've been buying movies and TV series since the VHS days.
Big w/kmart/target still sell them but JB definitely has the biggest range. There's more quirky titles in select independent media stores here and there, and it's great to see umbrella bring out lots of local titles ( this is in large part thanks to the documentary Not Quite Hollywood). It will be sad if other studios follow suit for sure.
