Unfortunately, streaming has devalued the act of watching movies and tv shows. I was talking with my sister about watching some shows that aren't on streaming services (included for free, like Netflix and Disney+), and she said, "nah, never mind". A lot of people expect things to be included in those services. While as, when we were young, we would buy DVDs and CD-ROMs all the time to enjoy stuff (even if we don't know if it'll be good). All of that is a PART of the experience of enjoying films and tv shows.
I don't see myself as a collector. But I have been buying more DVD's this year and I regret getting rid of so many during the 'declutter/minimalism' phase a lot of people were in, including me. The positive side about buying DVD's now is that I find a lot of them in the thrift stores around me and they cost 1.80 euros per disk. (specially the tv shows/movies I grew up with). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a local bookstore here somehow took over part of the Free Record shop (a cd/dvd store that I spend a lot of money in as a teen) and they still sell DVD's and CD's that just come out, and older ones in sales like 3 for 25 euros or 2 for 20 euros. In a few weeks time I have been able to built up my collection for a relatively cheap price. Of course there are exceptions, tv show and movies that you only can find online on Ebay. I have spend I think a small fortune to find all the DVD's of Elementary. But there is something very nice about going to the thrift store and finding some real gems 😊😊
As someone who's a fan of the most volatile form of media on the planet (Anime) physical copies are an absolute MUST. I wil ALWAYS own a physical copy of my favorite movies and shows on DVD & Bluray. Streaming has it's place but it has never been and will never be a truly viable replacement for ANYTHING physical, especially here in the States where internet access is spotty at best and outright unavailable at worst...

Something I think people forget is back in the day, people used to rent dvds/movies at video stores, and so they bought a lot of the dvds, not people. That is a big part of the change, for now the ones who would just rent, use streaming.
While that is true... i have even as a young lad bough media. I have 3 vhs tapes i origionally bought. Others i had my sister has. I did rent new ones but that was because it took some time before the new movies were out for us to buy vs rent. And i would rent games as well before buying them if i liked it or not.
My problem with brick and mortars moving their physical media to online only is the fact that when I buy something online there is a 50/50 chance I will be sent a dirty damaged box. I like to be able to walk into a store see the media box, make sure BB did not scrap the box with their box openers (happens a lot) and buy it.
I hear you don't worry. At the end of the day, blame consumers for that one. That is the ONLY reason that physical retailers have closed down and have moved to online only. Because at the end of the day, people are lazy and favour convenience over everything else.
I went to physical media when two of the movies I purchased on streaming disappeared all of a sudden. Wasted money. Never again. I got a used Blue Ray player and buy movies now used on eBay for normally the same of less than what it would cost to purchase them streaming. Plus, picture and sound are better!
Streaming makes things easily accessible and available right away. Most people who consume media are not collectors (they just don't want to manage the clutter or don't have space for it). Many people just want to watch a movie or TV show just one time and that is enough for them, making streaming or digital copies very convenient. This is why physical media sales have tanked. And larger retail business have cut down on stocking them as a result. It's so strange to see an aisle with more vinyl records than CDs or DVDs in present day. I'm a big fan of physical media. Now is a great time to collect especially now since a lot of it is super cheap to buy. Streaming services would be the permanent norm fro everybody if they didn't remove or cancel shows and movies. Licensing issues will always be a problem, which makes the availability of many types of online content unstable. Even free videos on UA-cam can disappear just because the person who posted or created it no longer wanted to have it accessible. Online media is like dealing with someone on a constant mood swing. You never know what's going to happen next. To me that is a major turn off and makes physical media really shine. These are all reasons I don't use these paid internet based entertainment services at all. It's much better to just make back ups and digitize your physical media library of music, movies, and TV shows. This way you can watch or listen to the content whenever your want and don't have to worry if a movie/show/album on your streaming service will be available when you want to watch/listen it.
Physical content certainly isn’t going anywhere , but I can see it being less abundant over time and become more of a retro hobby amongst young people (similar to vinyl). I remember similar sentiment about movie theatres when streaming got big ,but they’re still booked and busy with only handfuls of titles being direct to streaming.
Some of the studios certainly don't make it easy to collect physical media, especially in Australia where I am. A lot of titles just aren't locally distributed and even fairly big titles recently released on 4k such as Deep Impact, Ronin, Bad Boys 1 & 2 plus many many others. So the only option is to pay a premium and order them through Amazon to import them from the US or UK. Now Disney is rumoured to have announced they will stop releasing physical media in Australia completely. I didn't think I could be any more unhappy with Disney executives recent decision making but here we are! :(
DVD's were the main viewing source through the whole of the 2000s, not just the early 2000s, at least in my country. I remember the local media store was very busy between 2007 and 2009 and people would buy DVD's as Christmas gifts.
Yeah that's a good point. The years have kind of blurred together, slipped away from me and screwed with my memory LOL! But now that you mention it, I do seem to remember still using DVDs myself in the mid-to-late 2000s. The first round of blu-rays were released in 2006, but I don't think I even got my first blu-ray player until around 2009. Once that happened, DVDs became almost instantly obsolete in my mind compared to high-definition Blu-rays. But I know it took others longer to make the switch (and some are even just now making the leap from DVD to HD and UHD). Thanks for watching.
The continued and increasing sales of the PS5 and XSX are going to help with that. It already has a Blu-ray player in it. I know that a lot of collectors scoff at the quality of those players, but the fact of the matter is that it lets a lot of people join in with physical media.
everyones entry way is never the best way. learning in elementary is wildly ineffective, but kids at that age take longer to learn, and don't grasp anything not entertaining. college is more likely to be straight info dumping and learning. Sure you could buy a ps3 and watch blurays, but its not the most effective way.
What's insane to me is how Playstation doesn't even recognize music CDs. I mean, you've got the drive, how much money are you really saving taking away that functionality?

Right On! I volunteer at a very well donated Church rummage sale every summer. You would not believe the DVD's CD's and Records that are put into this sale. I get to price them accordingly because everyone around me thinks the formats are dead. I get to have pre-sale shopping perks as a volunteer , and come away with unexpected treasures.

I absolutely hate streaming to no end. And I despise people who solely rely on it and mock people who still buy discs. As a fan of film I see way too many cons with streaming. The streaming companies are set up to take your money by having you to pay monthly to continue to watch what they want you to watch. Buying discs allows you to spend your money on your own time, when ever you want and on titles you want or you can stop collecting all together and still have something to watch without paying. That is my biggest gripe and many people never mention this when talking streaming vs physical. I watched 3 movies on disc today on my day off and regret none of it.

I didn't see anybody talk about this, but another argument is that just because Best Buy has pulled physical media, that doesn't mean the sales were bad. The market of home tech has expanded considerably, and if the boutique media market is thriving and a different department has the potential to make more profit than media, it's smarter to invest more space to show higher profit gadgets.
Except to me Best Buy and Wal-Mart's decision to pull physical media to me, IS because sales were bad. Because don't you think that if this push towards digital/steaming never happened, people would still be buying physical more than they are now? Oh well, in my opinion I feel there is going to be a resurgence towards physical media again. Because NOW, people are starting to realize that they never have owned and never will own what they buy digitally, which they would have known IF they had read the ToS in the first place.
Yes exactly! And it really irks me that they're just sitting on a gold mine of old titles from 20th Century Fox, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures, etc.... but they're doing very little to restore/preserve these films on 4K. Meanwhile, the film source elements presumably sit in a vault somewhere and further degrade over time. It's pretty infuriating. Up until now, I've been pretty measured in my tone toward Disney. @@donnellcoleman7784 The only problem with that is Disney Plus is shit (like most streaming). I absolutely will not use their service. Besides, I've already got most of the old films I care about on blu ray, which is better than streaming in terms of quality anyway. So that's not really the point. I don't know too many (if any) people that are passionate about physical media who would be satisfied with only streaming. These films need 4K physical media releases. Streaming can't even come close to cutting it compared to disc (even if the streams were in 4K).
I hate that Disney refuses to release Prey on 4k or anything else just let us buy this film for god sake now that they own the Alien and Predator franchises I think they will just keep all the films on Disney Plus and any new future releases, you can't even see these new films in the cinema at all now, they could be making a ton of money if they just released Prey on its own not even the other films I just pray that they don't ruin these two amazing franchises but this is Disney we are talking about.
It really grinds my gears to no end at the amount of digital/streaming fanboys who poke at physical media consumers by saying garbage like 'digital is the future' and all that crap. And now they are only now finding out that they never have and never will own what they buy on the digital store front (regardless of the service). Movies OR gaming. Is digital the future now? Don't think so. I am and always will be a physical media consumer. For more reasons than one.
Thats my big thing as well, wanting to watch stuff - especially anything before 1960! and it not being available on streaming services. I dont have criterion available in australia so it makes it even more difficult. Im only just getting into buying physical media as well so its nice to know that its not all going away haha. Ngl not having a 4K TV or player is the only reason why I still collect regular Blu-Rays instead of 4K. However, now that I've started collecting Tokuatsu on Blu-Ray and that isn't available on 4K I still collect regular Blu-Rays. And I've been collecting for 6 years now.
That's cool I get it. I think that's what we're seeing with a lot of people who are upgrading their TVs. Pretty much all the models are 4K these days, and I think quite a few people dip their toes into the 4K physical media pool as they upgrade their TVs and gain the 4K capabilities. I believe I got my 4K tv close to 5 years ago... but even then, it probably took me a good year or so before I ever even bought my first 4K disc(s)... and then another 8-9 months after that before the format really sort of "clicked" with me. I was so committed to blu ray, I didn't think I was ever gonna upgrade to 4K discs (even with a 4K TV). But over time I fell in love with the 4K format, and now I'm totally hooked LOL! I jumped on streaming enthusiastically and encouraged the rest of my family to do so. But very quickly I discovered that as time went by, I watched less and less and less. I’d scroll through and then just not actually watch anything. I also wasted lots of time just finding where a title was streaming. Then the censorship issue grew and I didn’t like that at all. And when the end of Return of the Jedi had young Anakin instead of the original I was REALLY put off. I’ve begun renewing my physical collection- they won’t be censored or edited for a modern audience.
I completely understand. I even went down the streaming path myself for a while during my collecting hiatus (which lasted close to a decade or so). But I eventually realized streaming pretty much sucks in every way except the convenience aspect. And that point was driven home for me even more as I got into 4K. Welcome back to collecting! Though I should note that Return of the Jedi (and the Star Wars trilogy in general) is kind of a unique case... that's not a streaming thing, that's a George Lucas thing (Lucas himself made those changes at the end of Jedi years ago, as well as other changes/CGI additions elsewhere in the original trilogy). And now that's the only way you can get these films officially. Every retail version that exists of Jedi these days is going to have that same Anakin alteration with Hayden at the end instead... whether you buy blu-ray or 4k disc. You can no longer buy the original trilogy unaltered in official, retail releases. If you want the original trilogy unaltered, there have been some private individuals out there who have been able to provide "Despecialized" versions of the original trilogy. They're essentially fan creations, fan edits that are really well-done. Just do a search for "Harmy's despecialized Star Wars" or unaltered Star Wars 4K, Star Wars 4K77, etc. Might take a little research, but they're out there (even available in 4k, I believe... although it might just be the first two films that have made it to despecialized 4K to date. It could be they're still working on Jedi despecialized for 4K). You can get all three films unaltered in HD. But they're not the kind of thing you can just go buy at Amazon or what not. I think you have to download them and burn them to a disc, etc. I haven't gone down this route yet, but I'm considering it at some point. I'm still researching it myself. I got out of physical video a while ago, just now getting back in. But I'm not really the type to buy any and everything. I'm extremely picky, so I only plan on buying physical discs of stuff I truly love. that should keep my collection to a more manageable size.
I totally get it. But welcome back! And that's a good way to go when you're starting out. Start with the titles you love the most, keep it modest and manageable, and only buy the stuff you actually care about and will watch. That's what I did when I first got back into collecting a few years ago... I just focused on the really big stuff that was important to me. And believe me, I never intended to get as far back into collecting as I have. But it just kind of happened organically... Once I had acquired all my favorite core titles that were available (particularly on 4K), I found that I wanted more! LMAO! The way I see it now, I'm building what I like to call my "geezer collection" -- my own personally-curated library of films for my twilight years LOL! Future-proofing. I'm very much into curating, and I'm quite selective myself. There are quite a few genres and subgenres or eras even that I'm just not interested in. I do blind buy titles, but I'm usually pretty careful and thoughtful about what I choose. One of my biggest pet peeves is having any titles in my collection that I don't really like. I'll keep my comment short and sweet, my girlfriend wanted to rent a movie on streaming for $5.99. I mentioned to her I own it on Blu ray for $5 LOL. Then she figured out she had around 5+ streaming services she was paying for that she forgotten about unfortunately. I agree with you, thank you for the video.
Honestly Streaming is just Cable evolved, if you want to cover all your bases (Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+) those monthly fees add up and become just as expensive as cable the major difference is its wireless and you can watch what you want when you want. Im heavy into physical media at over 2000+ titles in my collection, space seems to be a darurant for a lot of people but frankly its about space management, movies dont take up a lot of space especially if you decide to collect very casually.
And I made the decision to put all my DVDs in binders and ditch the cases. I have a ton of DVDs and they all fit under my bed in binders. Solves the space problem.
It’s going to be niche market. I been collecting physical media since video cassette days but always upgrading to next platform. 4k discs I believe are the last physical media discs I very much doubt 8k discs as a medium. I now only buy discs when I know the release is reference. I dig more into shout factory releases and criterion as I know these are typically reference and most titles are small batch pressings.
Yeah I totally agree... I think 4K is going to be the last physical media format we see on disc for movies. 8K isn't going to be practical for most people (or studios/companies, for that matter) -- for a whole host of reasons. So I don't think 8K discs are going to be a thing. Thanks for watching!
The reason they keep switching movies and shows on streaming is because they feel like something is missing on streaming and the quality is better on DVD.
Much as you, I started with music back in the 80s. Some cassettes, but more lps until 1988. Jimmy Page's Outrider was my first cd and collected mostly cds since. I usually hit the used music stores, Best Buy, and during the 90s Blockbuster Music. Some time in the late 90s is when I started collecting vhs, then dvd and blu-ray. Around the mid 2000s, most of the used music stores were gone. There was Best Buy and Half Price Books. By that time, Best Buy didn't have much as far as music that I didn't already have. They were still great for movies, though. All that said, I'd argue that collecting media has always been a niche market. The lack of streaming and the abundance of used shops just kind of hid the true numbers. I say this because outside of a few people, nobody I knew collected. Not really. Sure, parents may have a small collection of Disney vhs for their kids. The average person might have a case of cassettes or a small collection (20-30) of cds. Their collections never really got any bigger than that. If they get tired of something, off to the used stores to sell to make room for something different. If you frequent a used store often, you can tell. The most popular titles are usually the first and easiest to find used. Boutique labels that are geared for collectors not so much. I sometimes wonder how things would be if stores would adapt to the collector in mind instead of constantly shrinking the media sections.
I think you make a good point. It's entirely possible that media collecting has always been a bit of a niche hobby. So when I say "mainstream" (referring to the pre-streaming era), I'm more or less just saying relative to now. Physical media used to be a lot more widespread -- even for people who didn't necessarily buy movies and collect them at home. Back in the day, I seem to remember most people I knew who were big movie/music fans had some kind of physical collection. But you're right -- most casual movie fans probably didn't really get into collecting and the ownership aspect, even back then (i.e. "the masses")... But they usually still had VCRs and DVD players, and were often content just renting movies from a video store and only seeing them once (or just watching/recording whatever came on cable TV the rest of the time). So it very well could be that film enthusiasm itself is kind of a niche interest... at least, to the point of wanting to own it and own it in the best possible quality. Just like with music, there are definitely a lot more casual fans out there overall than cinephiles and big-time movie buffs. Sadly, I think we've always had a lot of people in society who view the arts in general with only a fleeting interest. Thanks for watching and weighing in!
I'll keep my DVDs and Blu-Rays. I rip them and back them up on SSD hard drives. There are tons of older movies and TV shows that are not being streamed anywhere.
That is the total truth! -- I'm a big Marilyn Monroe fan and John Wayne fan and good luck finding the most of those on streaming services. You'll only find a few, and even renting them you can't find the more obscure movies. Don't have all the John Wayne stuff -- but almost have everything that Marylin Monroe was in. That one isn't too hard it's only about 20 movies.
I'm in both camps as a collector primarily focused on Blu-ray 3D. It's actually dead, aside from a literal handful of new discs per year, with most of the best titles out of print and hard to find. Even just this year Random Space Media closed after their borked Sing 2 release and Disney's departure from Australia, it's really dark days. But for the 4K and blu-ray market things really seem better than ever, with everything from Hugo UHD (fun fact - that includes a botched 3D disc that uses the 2D version for one eye lol), UHD steelbook releases of Disney shows, Mask of the Phantasm UHD, Stand By Me with DV HDR, Cameron's stuff like Titanic, Abyss, Avatar... it's awesome!
Im a big physical media collector. I no longer pay for any streaming services, and anything netflix remove, like the movie hush, or anything they dont release on physical. Gets plundered from the high seas, if you catch my drift lol. But if they eventually release it on physical, like disney has done with prey and the mandeorian etc. I buy it!
Big Band and Vintage Jazz is definitely not mainstream. I listen to it every day. I am amazed young people are listing to this. I see it in the comments of old music video. I watch old B&W movies too.

playback devices may play a big factor. i think most ppl who can play 4k discs right now, it’s with an xbox or ps5. when the consoles go digital, ppl will need to out of their way to get a specific player

Streaming much like digital games have given me severe ADD and OCD. I can barely deal with movies anymore and mostly watch sitcom/cartoon reruns cause of how bad my attention span has gotten since all this has been around.
I'm still buying dvd because they're soo cheap there's plenty of good tv shows on dvd they just keep coming up with new movies and more. Also my panasonic ultra 4k player can upscale dvd to 4k resolution it looks beautiful.
I think most collectors agree with you that physical copies of certain films will continue to be available, but I think that kinda misses the forest for the trees. Physical media releases will become fewer and more expensive, which is bad news to the collectors. Vinyl is a good example of why physical media films will never entirely disappear, but looking at vinyl's trajectory, it's only recently that it has resurged. There were at least a couple decades in the recent past where new music simply wasn't being released on vinyl. Vinyl collectors during that time had to consign themselves to used copies of older albums, and I hate to see that happening to physical media of films
streaming stinks if i need to pay subscriptions to five different services, i only have netflix and thats it. when i was a kid cable tv gave us hundreds and hundreds of channels in the house with virtually anything at all and this was in the 2000s. on top of that my dvd player doesnt try to sell me things after a conversation i had with my friends and family so its way less creepy

In simple terms, dead to the mainstream audience and the golden age for collectors and cinephiles. Physical media only became mainstream with DVD because it was cheap, abundant and the best and easiest way to watch movies. Now, that’s streaming for most people. DVD was an anomaly and we are simply back to it being a collectors market with Blu-ray and UHD.
I use to agree with this but now, everyone and their mother has a streaming service and EVERYTHING that use to be free in Hulu r Netflix, are now behind each services paywall. This has driven me who was NOT a collector back to physical media and I have been finding it totally freeing and I’m feeling a lot different about owning my own media now than I did say 10 years ago.

👍🏽I started collecting movies when I owned my first DVD and never stopped. Collecting CDs started some years earlier around 93. Ownership and accessibly are some major reason for physical media. It’s also an appreciation of art. I don’t use any streaming services. Also because I don’t pay money and support the production of some random stupid movie I’ll never watch😂. That gossip “Streaming streaming. Physical media is dead.” could scare people away from collecting. Also the availability of good price/value 4K players could scare people. Best quality and budget solution to me right now would be Xbox or a PS.
Maybe you should define "dying". Because going from a mainstream mainstay to a niche is a form of dying. I also want to point out that there are now a lot of movies that never get a physical release. Such as Netflix 'original' movies which is a bad sign because I have to maintain a Netflix account to watch these movies. Now a lot of Netflix originals are bad but there are some good ones, and I would like to watch them whenever I want independent of Netflix. When we see more and more movies not even getting physical release in the first place that is a form of dying.
I prefer to think of it as changing rather than dying. I don't consider a niche market a form of death. As long as there are collectors and titles being produced, that kind of niche market situation can continue on indefinitely (just like anything else that people collect that could be considered niche). So physical is definitely not dead -- especially when you look at all the new titles still being released (4K growth is stronger than ever right now), the flood of boutiques rising to meet collector demand, and some of the other factors I mentioned in the video. In 30-40 years, maybe the situation will be a little different. But for the time being and foreseeable future, I don't think physical is going anywhere. I do agree Netflix is a problem -- they definitely need to get their act together and release more of their stuff on physical. I'm super annoyed with them, because they actually have a few films I want to own physically (Zack Snyder films, Michael Bay, etc). But consider this: Even when physical media was at peak mainstream levels, we still didn't get every movie ever made released on physical media. That's always been a factor to some degree or another. There are thousands of films that have never even made it to blu-ray, or even DVD in some cases. So to some extent , that's just the nature of the biz and has been going on for a long time. As streaming becomes more and more expensive, physical media will become more and more popular again. One day streaming will get to expensive and die just like cable and physical media will remain.

Oh it surprised the hell out of me too! LOL! But yeah, it's true... I've even noticed it with other collectors/channels I watch. It seems like it's more for the collectible aspect and posterity, nostalgia, etc. than it is for practical viewing purposes for many. I started collecting CDs 6 years ago and have a huge collection now! I continue to buy them anytime I find an album I like at a music store or I usually get at least one anytime I go to a concert. In fact, I go out of my way to check out physical media stores very often. It is always exciting to me to find new ones, and I appreciate the ones I have collected. I've recently started collecting vinyls too, and have several shelves full of my favorite movies on DVD or Blu-ray. I don't pay for any TV/movie streaming services and never will. Just Spotify, because of how much music I can discover on there. But Im still buying the physical version of my favorite artists music alongside spotify and supporting them. I prefer to own things and not stream them. Physical copies are better.
I'm with you about physical media and streaming. It is nice having a disc in hand. I will give up multiple streaming services before I give up on my discs. I do like having my TV shows on a streaming service. The Stargate and Star Trek franchises are too large to own.😢 The only bad side to media ownership is space. I am running out of room. Cost is a consideration if you wish to upgrade or come across cooler packaging (looking at you Hunger Games steelbook box set).
Yeah I completely agree. Nothing quite matches the whole experience of being able to choose a film off your shelves after browsing, hold it in your hands, admire the artwork, clean the disc if needed, put it in the player, etc. There's a certain nostalgic value to even just going through that ritual... it can almost be kind of therapeutic. I agree the space issue can definitely be challenging. I just added a new storage unit to my movie room not that long ago, and I can already tell that running out of space is probably not going to be too far off in my future... especially as my collection grows a little bit faster than I anticipated LMAO!😆 (and I agree, the double dipping definitely doesn't help lol!)
@@TheOriginalFuzz I don't care about the cases -- so I store all of my DVDs in binders -- and have a ton that all fit under my bed. So, if you don't care about cases -- solving the space problem with DVDs is easy.
Naw I wasn't too interested in that particular set. I'm happy enough owning all the studio album box sets (and having them in surround sound, no less). What I had really been hoping we would get from Genesis for the longest time was updated blu-ray releases of all those all old awesome DVD concerts... namely, Live At Wembley, The Way We Walk, and When in Rome. But then I learned that it appears all those concerts were shot on video... and are of such a low source resolution and quality that they would look like total crap if put out on blu ray. So sadly, it's not likely to happen. I'm kind of surprised the band didn't have the foresight at the time to capture their concert films on a more future-friendly medium (i.e. 35 mm film stock). They were certainly big enough and could afford it.
@@TheOriginalFuzzThere are unofficial releases of these. When in Rome was recorded in HD but as far as I know the only way to see it in HD is when it is shown on AXS TV if you have cable. It's fantastic. The DVD is OK, sounds great but has disappointing DVD quality video.

It does appear it was shot on HDTV video, so I would think we would at least be able to get a passable blu-ray out of the band for this title... it drives me nuts that they refuse to release it for the fans on blu ray. They need to get with the times! Honestly, I've not been too impressed with how the band has conducted itself in recent years. I was really hoping they would film and release the Last Domino tour (which I did not get to see), but then I heard there would be no blu-ray release of this last tour. I was really bummed... until I saw some of the unofficial UA-cam footage from the tour and saw what shape Phil is in. It was heartbreaking. Now I understand why they didn't want to release a blu-ray of the latest tour. He's sitting the whole time, his voice did not sound good, and they had to change the key of the songs so drastically to accommodate his voice, that it almost didn't even sound like the same band anymore (they've always changed keys over the years, but The Last Domino tour was really extreme in this regard). Still hoping someday we get a When in Rome blu ray, but it doesn't seem like the band has any interest in doing that. And I'm just not satisfied with my DVD. I do have cable and know the channel you're talking about... but that's just not going to cut it for me (plus they usually cut songs out of those broadcasts anyway). I need to own it in HD! lol
One thing I didnt hear you mention as a negative about the streaming services - when a studio decides to license out their products to a competitor streaming service for a period of time. Case in point - the Star Trek TOS/TNG movies. Signed up for Paramount+ thinking you were getting access to OG trek? Nope. Its on MAX now. And for who knows how long. whip out your wallet buddy.....
The only things that I have through streaming are either movies that came with a digital code with a DVD/Blu-ray. A few movies that I could care less about that I bought free with the digital shipping credits on Amazon and I have a few from a VUDU gift card someone gave me. But I ripped all of those and have them on a hard drive and can burn a copy whenever I want. I do keep every piece of media on digital file for ease to flip through when I'm too lazy to get off the couch but if I really want to sit down and enjoy a movie I throw the disc in.
The streaming tipping point came for me 3/4 months ago. Sick and tired of good movies I wanted to watch no longer on the service. I’m done. Physical ownership. This is the way.
Hi Fuzz ,How I wish we had the range of 4K discs you have in the states in Austraila we get mostly the main stream films on 4k if we are lucky sometimes just on normal Blu ray only but we are starting to see older titles being released on 4K but very slowly, We have a great company here called Umbrella Entertainment which puts out some great collectors Editions on Blu ray sometimes 4k The Terrifier collectors edition was just one great example and many other collector editions sell out before release which is great to see.
It won't, and my DVD collection will outlive me. At worst it will become a niche industry but there is a certain segment of the market that will always want physical media.
I enjoy collecting physical media and I do a lot of other things with it. It’s one of my favorite things, but I’m a certain movie connoisseur it’s better to own it than destroy because you don’t own it that’s one thing I do like about physical media you have it they never take it away and whatever the next thing it should be fully backwards like the regions of 4K. That’s the biggest thing and you get movie quality in your house.
For me, the recent prices hikes, ad tiers, password and IP address crackdowns, combined with very little original content on each platform has made me realize I want to go back to just outright buying stuff. Im not going to get conned back into a cable paradigm again. in 2010, I cut the cord. In 2024 I cut the stream.

Younger people don’t buy any kind of physical media. I own a ton of cd’s,Blu-ray’s,box sets,etc…my adult children don’t own any. Zero. I get it that streaming is immediate and this generation works this way,specially with the introduction of cell phones/computers. I remember having to wait until the news came on at night to find out what was happening in the world. Now,that information is immediately available,sometimes live. There’s a market for physical products,as for people like me who collect stuff. Just like iTunes killed off the cd market,streaming services are trying the same with movies.
Great Video Fuzz! I agree with your views, I just think the worst case scenario it ends up like vinyl and it’s just becomes super Niche but that’s just a worst case scenario.
I've always found online prices to be less expensive than brick-and-mortars overall... unless we're talking about a specialty boutique or limited edition-type release. To the extent this stuff is more expensive now, I think it's just because prices are rising across the board (both online and at brick-and-mortars), due to inflation and economic circumstances. But i think online shopping is pretty much the new model for a niche collector's market like this. Physical media is no longer mainstream, so it's not going to be in many mainstream stores. Personally, I haven't bought hardly any physical media in a store for like 10 years. I've been shopping online for this stuff for a long time (like 20+ years). So nothing really feels like it's changing that much for me, in terms of availability. I still get all the titles I want delivered to my door. And I love the convenience of that. Buy used DVDs in batches. I am fortunate and I live in California where there is this incredible used DVD/CD store called Rasputins about 5 miles from my house, but yeah I hear you -- if you don't have an option like that -- take my reco and start looking at used DVDs online.
Excellent video. You made a lot of good points I hadn't thought of or heard in other videos on this topic. Yes baseball cards are still king of the sportscard market with Pokémon cards also very popular with younger buyers. The print runs are in the millions.

Physical media is never gonna go away with movies, for many reasons I’ll point out some the picture and sound quality is greatly superior (even a standard Blu-ray in an average player looks better and sounds better then any streaming service) It’s cheaper to buy your favorite movie instead of constantly subscribe to streaming services to watch them, let’s say you buy your favorite movie for $20 that you can have them watch literally for the rest of your life, compare that to re-subscribing to a streaming service every time you wanna watch it. Fans and collectors of movies people that want to buy a movie that’s not super popular I want to watch it 10 years from now let’s be real you can’t find everything on streaming. And finally the most important one anybody that has common sense buys physical copies of their movies. Anybody that just buys a digital copy is a moron plain and simple, if you buy the physical you get a superior version and you get a digital code.
Normally i'm shaking my head at videos like this cause to me it's a stupid question "Is physical media dead?" (or dying)... The clear answer is a ringing NO! it's changed yes, but not dead... Then the word "Worldwide" crossed my mind and i thought about my county of Denmark and that way i would almost say "Yes! it's pretty much dead"... No real stores left selling "ALL" formats brand "NEW", ALOT of movies only released on DVD in a "VERY" limited run. Danish music artists "NOT" releasing music on cd's. Only "1" official Danish movie released on 4k "YEARS" ago, no real danish boutique labels... The list goes on. No wonder why 99% of what i pick up is imported. :(
Great video, Fuzz! I've never worried about actual literal death of physical media (implying zero options to media anywhere), but I am concerned about studio heads opting against the release of more and more titles. Ahem, Disney, I'm looking at you. That aside I do have a question: if the future of physical media is so bright and explosive, why is it that BD player manufacturers have all but abandoned the field? First it was Oppo, then Samsung, and the likes of Sony and LG haven't launched a new model in years. Is Panasonic the only serious player anymore (aside from the premium $5000+ companies)? Surely those companies understand the strength of the physical media market and are clamoring to meet that demand.
I'm not too concerned about that. I think someone else will eventually come along and enter (or re-enter) the market on 4K players if the demand is there. I think for a period of time, it looked like streaming was taking over completely and some companies acted on that believing there's no point in investing in the future of a technology they think could be going away. But I think the climate could be changing on that line of thinking, and I do think we're going to see a resurgence in physical media (if we're not already starting to see it)... and that could result in new models eventually being manufactured. But admittedly, that's also why I have a few different 4K players (Panny UB820 and Sony X700 -- plus an older Samsung unit)... I wanted to make sure I had the ability to play these discs in the future should players stop being produced altogether (future-proofing). But I don't really think that's going to happen anytime soon. The market always adapts to changing consumer/collector preferences, and I think we're probably just in a bit of a transition period right now -- which is maybe part of why we haven't seen new models introduced in recent years. No, not exactly... the situation with Disney is more complex than that. Disney got out of the physical media game in Australia, but they seem to be re-igniting their physical media production in the U.S. There are a lot of titles under the Disney umbrella that have not been released on 4K, because they were putting all their eggs in the streaming basket. But now that streaming is turning out to not be profitable for them, they seem to be going back to physical media a bit (with titles like Prey and the Mandalorian coming to physical, as well as the upcoming James Cameron films The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic and Aliens... and presumably Terminator not too far behind). We'll see where it goes from here. But Disney is still releasing plenty of stuff on blu ray.. that's not going away. Keep in mind they also own the 20th Century Fox library, and I believe they also made a deal with Mill Creek not too long ago to distribute a bunch of their titles on blu ray. So we're just kind of waiting to see what happens with Disney.

I live in South East Asia Fuzz and physical media is very popular and because I'm only a 4 hour flight away from Japan the mecca of physical media I have many more options because when I think of Physical media I don't just think of movie and tv shows but video games CDs Vinyls books but I don't know how much of a market there is for movies in Japan I'm sure there are some but I don't know how Popular movies on 4k blu-ray or DVD is in Japan it's mostly for gamers and some music lovers. Not sure but physical media is harder to come by. Some Best Buy’s do not carry it. Outlets like Costco no longer do. The best option is on line like Amazon.
Yeah I stopped looking for physical media at brick-and-mortar retail stores probably close to a decade ago. It's still very much available... but it's just not as mainstream anymore, so a lot mainstream stores have reduced or eliminated their stock because it doesn't sell as well compared to other products. But I've been shopping online for this stuff for years, and I can almost always find what I want online.
I think the more and more things on streaming get censored, the more people will turn back to physical media so they can watch their films or TV shows in their original form, or closer to their original form.
Oh I totally agree! I think they're shooting themselves in the feet with the censorship. That's definitely not good look. And people do notice and care.
In addition, the recent "revoke of ownership" of digital downloads (Sony vs Discovery) should really open some eyes and push folks back to physical media.
I just bought a dvd player again today. And started my collection back up again after being tired of spending money on streaming services that may or may not have what I want to watch and missed physically picking out what u wanted to watch. Awesome video it's me again from yesterday lol I didnt want to add to many comments on the video to turn stuff off on that 4k player so I like to thank you so much do far my new plsyer hasnt had any issues I turned off everything you showed I did turn off the 24p with everything turned off terminator 2 has awesome sound a good dark hdr10 picture however they dont move in 4k bit that's ok 4k seems to show me it has better sound then bluray so far and pirates of the caribbean is more enjoyable not all washed out it looks dark with the 2 settings you instructed to turn off on the somy bluray 4k uhd picture I'm happy it dont look washed out tbh so yeah my 4k experience seems to love it more for sound for he theater then picture so happy dawg your videos I'm subscribing to you one day I like to have a chat with you I got so much questions about future tech
Well to be honest, the picture quality on most 4K discs usually looks a lot better than what we got with T2 and Pirates of the Carribean. Those are probably the worst titles to start with (even though I too bought T2 as one of my first 4K titles... but I learned after the fact that most 4K transfers are much better than that. In fact, the T2 release was a studio error -- they used the wrong master for the 4K disc). The titles I mentioned in my "Must-own reference 4K movies" video I did a few months back are much better in terms of visuals... you'll notice a much bigger difference. Overall, I'd say it took me a little time for my eyes to adjust to 4K. The format didn't immediately "click" with me... it probably took me about 8-10 months of watching 4K content over time before I really started to appreciate everything the 4K format has to offer (it's not just the higher resolution, but also the HDR and wider color gamut that make the 4K image so appealing). Overall I notice that 4K images just tend to have more depth and "pop," to them compared to blu ray, and the colors usually look amazing.
Yeah that's a good point. I have 3 different 4K players for that reason (including a Panny Ub820)... for future-proofing purposes. Though it's possible we may see other companies get into the 4K player manufacturing game later on if the format continues to grow (as I believe it is doing right now -- in terms of titles being released and disc sales).
It's concerning that Sony and Microsoft will stop producing consoles with a blu ray drive, and how things are going, it will happen in this generation, next gen is digital-only that's for sure. I know xbox and ps are not the choice for film collectors, but for many people is the only way to watch a dvd or blu ray
Not worried on that front. Own 3 DVD players (one is an old one that I just kept as a spare), and also have a PS4 with a Blu-ray drive. Since I bought my first DVD player in the late 90s -- I've only had one unit go bad. And they still make them. At worst there will ALWAYS be a niche market for DVD/Blu-Ray players -- so nothing to worry about. Also, at some point I'm going to digitize my collection (and then will move the physical media to plastic bins in the garage as "archive" backups).
Streaming does not have everything I want to watch, like Only the Strong. Streaming has become just as, if not more, expensive than cable. Some companies I do NOT want to give my money to, like Disney. I buy used when I want a Disney movie so they do not get my money with the exception of the 4k Prey, which I pre-ordered just to let them know there is a demand for physical media.
I hear ya! I don't like buying from Disney either, but I too pre-ordered Prey just to send a message that this stuff will sell (plus, I wanted to own it anyway LOL!). The commentary on CDs is very true. It's a small market sure, but even the tiniest local artists I know still release music on disc (and some even cassette) for die-hard fans. It's very cheap to produce so it's pure profit for those folks so everyone wins. Hell, Daft Punk re-released their last studio album with additional content this year and I was happy to buy it. As you said, the quality is as good as you can get aside from the very rare placebo quality releases put out on SACD and whatnot.
I totally get where you're coming from. It may appear that way (especially when I have a lot of titles pulled for a video), but they're not up there randomly. First off, I have my shelves more or less memorized, so I usually know either roughly or precisely where everything is. But aside from that, I do have a fairly loose organizational system... it's just my own custom system. I don't organize my titles the way a lot of other collectors do. For example, I don't do any alphabetizing at all, because I don't like how limiting that system is for displaying titles on the shelves where I want them to appear (with some of my favorites occupying prime shelf real estate). So here's how I organize: First, I organize by genre... I have sections for horror, sci-fi, and action, and then I have a small miscellaneous section for anything that doesn't squarely fit in the other 3 genres. And then within each genre, I group titles together according to my own custom preferences -- i.e. my favorite franchises, themes, directors, actors, labels, etc. I realize my system isn't as pretty to look at as maybe the way other collectors do things, but it's flexible enough to allow me to move things around when I'm adding new titles to the collection, reorganizing, changing the display aesthetic, etc. Now if my collection were to grow to double the size it is now, who knows - I might have to come up with a slightly different system to manage it better LOL! But at the modest size it is now, my current system works best for me. Believe it or not, it's actually easier for me to find titles the way I have it set up. Thanks for the question... you bring up a good point that I'm sure others were wondering about as well.
I want all my favourite films and shows unedited, cut or censored from the original. Streamed stuff is constantly being tampered with and if physical media has reached its limit then all the better. Collecting them like beloved old books. I think the more we see streamed manipulation the more people will return to the material, touchable media. Or at least the people that give a toss.
Im sick to death of this streaming crap. I miss going down the local video store and renting. I like buying my bluray discs. The world has become a lazy boring mess and i for one hate it. The internet is the worst thing ever created.
Unfortunately, streaming has devalued the act of watching movies and tv shows. I was talking with my sister about watching some shows that aren't on streaming services (included for free, like Netflix and Disney+), and she said, "nah, never mind".
A lot of people expect things to be included in those services. While as, when we were young, we would buy DVDs and CD-ROMs all the time to enjoy stuff (even if we don't know if it'll be good). All of that is a PART of the experience of enjoying films and tv shows.

I don't see myself as a collector. But I have been buying more DVD's this year and I regret getting rid of so many during the 'declutter/minimalism' phase a lot of people were in, including me.
The positive side about buying DVD's now is that I find a lot of them in the thrift stores around me and they cost 1.80 euros per disk. (specially the tv shows/movies I grew up with).
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a local bookstore here somehow took over part of the Free Record shop (a cd/dvd store that I spend a lot of money in as a teen) and they still sell DVD's and CD's that just come out, and older ones in sales like 3 for 25 euros or 2 for 20 euros.
In a few weeks time I have been able to built up my collection for a relatively cheap price. Of course there are exceptions, tv show and movies that you only can find online on Ebay. I have spend I think a small fortune to find all the DVD's of Elementary.
But there is something very nice about going to the thrift store and finding some real gems 😊😊
As someone who's a fan of the most volatile form of media on the planet (Anime) physical copies are an absolute MUST. I wil ALWAYS own a physical copy of my favorite movies and shows on DVD & Bluray. Streaming has it's place but it has never been and will never be a truly viable replacement for ANYTHING physical, especially here in the States where internet access is spotty at best and outright unavailable at worst...
When tv and computers first came out they said “print is dead!”, but decades later bookstores are still a big thing.
You're 100% correct on all points. Physical media isn't going anywhere. I collect both music and my favorite films on disc and will continue to do so.

Something I think people forget is back in the day, people used to rent dvds/movies at video stores, and so they bought a lot of the dvds, not people. That is a big part of the change, for now the ones who would just rent, use streaming.
While that is true... i have even as a young lad bough media. I have 3 vhs tapes i origionally bought. Others i had my sister has. I did rent new ones but that was because it took some time before the new movies were out for us to buy vs rent. And i would rent games as well before buying them if i liked it or not.

My problem with brick and mortars moving their physical media to online only is the fact that when I buy something online there is a 50/50 chance I will be sent a dirty damaged box. I like to be able to walk into a store see the media box, make sure BB did not scrap the box with their box openers (happens a lot) and buy it.
I hear you don't worry. At the end of the day, blame consumers for that one. That is the ONLY reason that physical retailers have closed down and have moved to online only. Because at the end of the day, people are lazy and favour convenience over everything else.
I went to physical media when two of the movies I purchased on streaming disappeared all of a sudden. Wasted money. Never again. I got a used Blue Ray player and buy movies now used on eBay for normally the same of less than what it would cost to purchase them streaming. Plus, picture and sound are better!

Streaming makes things easily accessible and available right away. Most people who consume media are not collectors (they just don't want to manage the clutter or don't have space for it). Many people just want to watch a movie or TV show just one time and that is enough for them, making streaming or digital copies very convenient. This is why physical media sales have tanked. And larger retail business have cut down on stocking them as a result. It's so strange to see an aisle with more vinyl records than CDs or DVDs in present day.
I'm a big fan of physical media. Now is a great time to collect especially now since a lot of it is super cheap to buy. Streaming services would be the permanent norm fro everybody if they didn't remove or cancel shows and movies. Licensing issues will always be a problem, which makes the availability of many types of online content unstable. Even free videos on UA-cam can disappear just because the person who posted or created it no longer wanted to have it accessible. Online media is like dealing with someone on a constant mood swing. You never know what's going to happen next. To me that is a major turn off and makes physical media really shine. These are all reasons I don't use these paid internet based entertainment services at all.
It's much better to just make back ups and digitize your physical media library of music, movies, and TV shows. This way you can watch or listen to the content whenever your want and don't have to worry if a movie/show/album on your streaming service will be available when you want to watch/listen it.
Physical content certainly isn’t going anywhere , but I can see it being less abundant over time and become more of a retro hobby amongst young people (similar to vinyl). I remember similar sentiment about movie theatres when streaming got big ,but they’re still booked and busy with only handfuls of titles being direct to streaming.

Some of the studios certainly don't make it easy to collect physical media, especially in Australia where I am. A lot of titles just aren't locally distributed and even fairly big titles recently released on 4k such as Deep Impact, Ronin, Bad Boys 1 & 2 plus many many others. So the only option is to pay a premium and order them through Amazon to import them from the US or UK. Now Disney is rumoured to have announced they will stop releasing physical media in Australia completely. I didn't think I could be any more unhappy with Disney executives recent decision making but here we are! :(

DVD's were the main viewing source through the whole of the 2000s, not just the early 2000s, at least in my country. I remember the local media store was very busy between 2007 and 2009 and people would buy DVD's as Christmas gifts.
Yeah that's a good point. The years have kind of blurred together, slipped away from me and screwed with my memory LOL! But now that you mention it, I do seem to remember still using DVDs myself in the mid-to-late 2000s. The first round of blu-rays were released in 2006, but I don't think I even got my first blu-ray player until around 2009. Once that happened, DVDs became almost instantly obsolete in my mind compared to high-definition Blu-rays. But I know it took others longer to make the switch (and some are even just now making the leap from DVD to HD and UHD). Thanks for watching.

The continued and increasing sales of the PS5 and XSX are going to help with that. It already has a Blu-ray player in it. I know that a lot of collectors scoff at the quality of those players, but the fact of the matter is that it lets a lot of people join in with physical media.
Yep it will eventually help with sales but nowhere near as much if the PS4 PRO and XBOX ONE X would have played 4k UHD disc.

everyones entry way is never the best way. learning in elementary is wildly ineffective, but kids at that age take longer to learn, and don't grasp anything not entertaining. college is more likely to be straight info dumping and learning.

Right On! I volunteer at a very well donated Church rummage sale every summer. You would not believe the DVD's CD's and Records that are put into this sale. I get to price them accordingly because everyone around me thinks the formats are dead. I get to have pre-sale shopping perks as a volunteer , and come away with unexpected treasures.

I absolutely hate streaming to no end. And I despise people who solely rely on it and mock people who still buy discs.
As a fan of film I see way too many cons with streaming. The streaming companies are set up to take your money by having you to pay monthly to continue to watch what they want you to watch. Buying discs allows you to spend your money on your own time, when ever you want and on titles you want or you can stop collecting all together and still have something to watch without paying. That is my biggest gripe and many people never mention this when talking streaming vs physical.

I didn't see anybody talk about this, but another argument is that just because Best Buy has pulled physical media, that doesn't mean the sales were bad. The market of home tech has expanded considerably, and if the boutique media market is thriving and a different department has the potential to make more profit than media, it's smarter to invest more space to show higher profit gadgets.
Except to me Best Buy and Wal-Mart's decision to pull physical media to me, IS because sales were bad. Because don't you think that if this push towards digital/steaming never happened, people would still be buying physical more than they are now? Oh well, in my opinion I feel there is going to be a resurgence towards physical media again. Because NOW, people are starting to realize that they never have owned and never will own what they buy digitally, which they would have known IF they had read the ToS in the first place.

Yes exactly! And it really irks me that they're just sitting on a gold mine of old titles from 20th Century Fox, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures, etc.... but they're doing very little to restore/preserve these films on 4K. Meanwhile, the film source elements presumably sit in a vault somewhere and further degrade over time. It's pretty infuriating. Up until now, I've been pretty measured in my tone toward Disney. But that censorship crap just kind of pushes me over the edge, ya know? And French Connection certainly isn't the first time they've pulled this. Thanks for watching!

@@donnellcoleman7784 The only problem with that is Disney Plus is shit (like most streaming). I absolutely will not use their service. Besides, I've already got most of the old films I care about on blu ray, which is better than streaming in terms of quality anyway. So that's not really the point. I don't know too many (if any) people that are passionate about physical media who would be satisfied with only streaming. These films need 4K physical media releases. Streaming can't even come close to cutting it compared to disc (even if the streams were in 4K).

I hate that Disney refuses to release Prey on 4k or anything else just let us buy this film for god sake now that they own the Alien and Predator franchises I think they will just keep all the films on Disney Plus and any new future releases, you can't even see these new films in the cinema at all now, they could be making a ton of money if they just released Prey on its own not even the other films I just pray that they don't ruin these two amazing franchises but this is Disney we are talking about.
It really grinds my gears to no end at the amount of digital/streaming fanboys who poke at physical media consumers by saying garbage like 'digital is the future' and all that crap. And now they are only now finding out that they never have and never will own what they buy on the digital store front (regardless of the service). Movies OR gaming. Is digital the future now? I dont have criterion available in australia so it makes it even more difficult. Im only just getting into buying physical media as well so its nice to know that its not all going away haha. Ngl not having a 4K TV or player is the only reason why I still collect regular Blu-Rays instead of 4K. However, now that I've started collecting Tokuatsu on Blu-Ray and that isn't available on 4K I still collect regular Blu-Rays. And I've been collecting for 6 years now.
That's cool I get it. I think that's what we're seeing with a lot of people who are upgrading their TVs. Pretty much all the models are 4K these days, and I think quite a few people dip their toes into the 4K physical media pool as they upgrade their TVs and gain the 4K capabilities. I believe I got my 4K tv close to 5 years ago... but even then, it probably took me a good year or so before I ever even bought my first 4K disc(s)... and then another 8-9 months after that before the format really sort of "clicked" with me. I was so committed to blu ray, I didn't think I was ever gonna upgrade to 4K discs (even with a 4K TV). But over time I fell in love with the 4K format, and now I'm totally hooked LOL! Balanced approach is good! -- physical media can be thought of as a great complement to streaming.
I jumped on streaming enthusiastically and encouraged the rest of my family to do so. But very quickly I discovered that as time went by, I watched less and less and less. I’d scroll through and then just not actually watch anything. I also wasted lots of time just finding where a title was streaming. Then the censorship issue grew and I didn’t like that at all. And when the end of Return of the Jedi had young Anakin instead of the original I was REALLY put off. I’ve begun renewing my physical collection- they won’t be censored or edited for a modern audience.
I completely understand. I even went down the streaming path myself for a while during my collecting hiatus (which lasted close to a decade or so). But I eventually realized streaming pretty much sucks in every way except the convenience aspect. And that point was driven home for me even more as I got into 4K. Welcome back to collecting!
Though I should note that Return of the Jedi (and the Star Wars trilogy in general) is kind of a unique case... that's not a streaming thing, that's a George Lucas thing (Lucas himself made those changes at the end of Jedi years ago, as well as other changes/CGI additions elsewhere in the original trilogy). And now that's the only way you can get these films officially. Every retail version that exists of Jedi these days is going to have that same Anakin alteration with Hayden at the end instead... whether you buy blu-ray or 4k disc. You can no longer buy the original trilogy unaltered in official, retail releases. If you want the original trilogy unaltered, there have been some private individuals out there who have been able to provide "Despecialized" versions of the original trilogy. They're essentially fan creations, fan edits that are really well-done. Just do a search for "Harmy's despecialized Star Wars" or unaltered Star Wars 4K, Star Wars 4K77, etc. Might take a little research, but they're out there (even available in 4k, I believe... although it might just be the first two films that have made it to despecialized 4K to date. It could be they're still working on Jedi despecialized for 4K). You can get all three films unaltered in HD. But they're not the kind of thing you can just go buy at Amazon or what not. I think you have to download them and burn them to a disc, etc. I haven't gone down this route yet, but I'm considering it at some point. I'm still researching it myself.

I got out of physical video a while ago, just now getting back in. But I'm not really the type to buy any and everything. I'm extremely picky, so I only plan on buying physical discs of stuff I truly love. that should keep my collection to a more manageable size.
I totally get it. But welcome back! And that's a good way to go when you're starting out. Start with the titles you love the most, keep it modest and manageable, and only buy the stuff you actually care about and will watch. That's what I did when I first got back into collecting a few years ago... I just focused on the really big stuff that was important to me. And believe me, I never intended to get as far back into collecting as I have. But it just kind of happened organically... Once I had acquired all my favorite core titles that were available (particularly on 4K), I found that I wanted more! LMAO! The way I see it now, I'm building what I like to call my "geezer collection" -- my own personally-curated library of films for my twilight years LOL! Future-proofing. I'm very much into curating, and I'm quite selective myself. There are quite a few genres and subgenres or eras even that I'm just not interested in. I do blind buy titles, but I'm usually pretty careful and thoughtful about what I choose. One of my biggest pet peeves is having any titles in my collection that I don't really like. I'll keep my comment short and sweet, my girlfriend wanted to rent a movie on streaming for $5.99. I mentioned to her I own it on Blu ray for $5 LOL. Then she figured out she had around 5+ streaming services she was paying for that she forgotten about unfortunately. I agree with you, thank you for the video.
Honestly Streaming is just Cable evolved, if you want to cover all your bases (Prime, Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount+) those monthly fees add up and become just as expensive as cable the major difference is its wireless and you can watch what you want when you want.
Im heavy into physical media at over 2000+ titles in my collection, space seems to be a darurant for a lot of people but frankly its about space management, movies dont take up a lot of space especially if you decide to collect very casually.
And I made the decision to put all my DVDs in binders and ditch the cases. I have a ton of DVDs and they all fit under my bed in binders. Solves the space problem.
It’s going to be niche market. I been collecting physical media since video cassette days but always upgrading to next platform. 4k discs I believe are the last physical media discs I very much doubt 8k discs as a medium. I now only buy discs when I know the release is reference. I dig more into shout factory releases and criterion as I know these are typically reference and most titles are small batch pressings.
Yeah I totally agree... I think 4K is going to be the last physical media format we see on disc for movies. 8K isn't going to be practical for most people (or studios/companies, for that matter) -- for a whole host of reasons. So I don't think 8K discs are going to be a thing. Thanks for watching!
The reason they keep switching movies and shows on streaming is because they feel like something is missing on streaming and the quality is better on DVD.
Much as you, I started with music back in the 80s. Some cassettes, but more lps until 1988. Jimmy Page's Outrider was my first cd and collected mostly cds since. I usually hit the used music stores, Best Buy, and during the 90s Blockbuster Music.
Some time in the late 90s is when I started collecting vhs, then dvd and blu-ray. Around the mid 2000s, most of the used music stores were gone. There was Best Buy and Half Price Books. By that time, Best Buy didn't have much as far as music that I didn't already have. They were still great for movies, though.
All that said, I'd argue that collecting media has always been a niche market. The lack of streaming and the abundance of used shops just kind of hid the true numbers. I say this because outside of a few people, nobody I knew collected. Not really. Sure, parents may have a small collection of Disney vhs for their kids. The average person might have a case of cassettes or a small collection (20-30) of cds.
Their collections never really got any bigger than that. If they get tired of something, off to the used stores to sell to make room for something different. If you frequent a used store often, you can tell. The most popular titles are usually the first and easiest to find used. Boutique labels that are geared for collectors not so much.
I sometimes wonder how things would be if stores would adapt to the collector in mind instead of constantly shrinking the media sections.
I think you make a good point. It's entirely possible that media collecting has always been a bit of a niche hobby. So when I say "mainstream" (referring to the pre-streaming era), I'm more or less just saying relative to now. Physical media used to be a lot more widespread -- even for people who didn't necessarily buy movies and collect them at home. Back in the day, I seem to remember most people I knew who were big movie/music fans had some kind of physical collection. But you're right -- most casual movie fans probably didn't really get into collecting and the ownership aspect, even back then (i.e. "the masses")... But they usually still had VCRs and DVD players, and were often content just renting movies from a video store and only seeing them once (or just watching/recording whatever came on cable TV the rest of the time). So it very well could be that film enthusiasm itself is kind of a niche interest... at least, to the point of wanting to own it and own it in the best possible quality. Just like with music, there are definitely a lot more casual fans out there overall than cinephiles and big-time movie buffs. Sadly, I think we've always had a lot of people in society who view the arts in general with only a fleeting interest. Thanks for watching and weighing in!
I'll keep my DVDs and Blu-Rays. I rip them and back them up on SSD hard drives. There are tons of older movies and TV shows that are not being streamed anywhere.
That is the total truth! -- I'm a big Marilyn Monroe fan and John Wayne fan and good luck finding the most of those on streaming services. You'll only find a few, and even renting them you can't find the more obscure movies. Don't have all the John Wayne stuff -- but almost have everything that Marylin Monroe was in. That one isn't too hard it's only about 20 movies.
I'm in both camps as a collector primarily focused on Blu-ray 3D. It's actually dead, aside from a literal handful of new discs per year, with most of the best titles out of print and hard to find. Even just this year Random Space Media closed after their borked Sing 2 release and Disney's departure from Australia, it's really dark days. But for the 4K and blu-ray market things really seem better than ever, with everything from Hugo UHD (fun fact - that includes a botched 3D disc that uses the 2D version for one eye lol), UHD steelbook releases of Disney shows, Mask of the Phantasm UHD, Stand By Me with DV HDR, Cameron's stuff like Titanic, Abyss, Avatar... it's awesome!
Im a big physical media collector. I no longer pay for any streaming services, and anything netflix remove, like the movie hush, or anything they dont release on physical. Gets plundered from the high seas, if you catch my drift lol. But if they eventually release it on physical, like disney has done with prey and the mandeorian etc. I buy it!

playback devices may play a big factor. i think most ppl who can play 4k discs right now, it’s with an xbox or ps5. when the consoles go digital, ppl will need to out of their way to get a specific player

Streaming much like digital games have given me severe ADD and OCD. I can barely deal with movies anymore and mostly watch sitcom/cartoon reruns cause of how bad my attention span has gotten since all this has been around.
I'm still buying dvd because they're soo cheap there's plenty of good tv shows on dvd they just keep coming up with new movies and more. Also my panasonic ultra 4k player can upscale dvd to 4k resolution it looks beautiful.
I think most collectors agree with you that physical copies of certain films will continue to be available, but I think that kinda misses the forest for the trees. Physical media releases will become fewer and more expensive, which is bad news to the collectors. Vinyl is a good example of why physical media films will never entirely disappear, but looking at vinyl's trajectory, it's only recently that it has resurged. There were at least a couple decades in the recent past where new music simply wasn't being released on vinyl. Vinyl collectors during that time had to consign themselves to used copies of older albums, and I hate to see that happening to physical media of films
In the UK, the death of Network DVD has been a big blow to archive TV collecting.

streaming stinks if i need to pay subscriptions to five different services, i only have netflix and thats it. when i was a kid cable tv gave us hundreds and hundreds of channels in the house with virtually anything at all and this was in the 2000s. on top of that my dvd player doesnt try to sell me things after a conversation i had with my friends and family so its way less creepy

In simple terms, dead to the mainstream audience and the golden age for collectors and cinephiles. Physical media only became mainstream with DVD because it was cheap, abundant and the best and easiest way to watch movies. Now, that’s streaming for most people. DVD was an anomaly and we are simply back to it being a collectors market with Blu-ray and UHD.
I use to agree with this but now, everyone and their mother has a streaming service and EVERYTHING that use to be free in Hulu r Netflix, are now behind each services paywall. This has driven me who was NOT a collector back to physical media and I have been finding it totally freeing and I’m feeling a lot different about owning my own media now than I did say 10 years ago.

Ownership and accessibly are some major reason for physical media. It’s also an appreciation of art.
I don’t use any streaming services. Also because I don’t pay money and support the production of some random stupid movie I’ll never watch😂.
That gossip “Streaming streaming. Physical media is dead.” could scare people away from collecting.
Also the availability of good price/value 4K players could scare people. Best quality and budget solution to me right now would be Xbox or a PS.

Maybe you should define "dying". Because going from a mainstream mainstay to a niche is a form of dying. I also want to point out that there are now a lot of movies that never get a physical release. Such as Netflix 'original' movies which is a bad sign because I have to maintain a Netflix account to watch these movies. Now a lot of Netflix originals are bad but there are some good ones, and I would like to watch them whenever I want independent of Netflix. When we see more and more movies not even getting physical release in the first place that is a form of dying.
I prefer to think of it as changing rather than dying. I don't consider a niche market a form of death. As long as there are collectors and titles being produced, that kind of niche market situation can continue on indefinitely (just like anything else that people collect that could be considered niche). So physical is definitely not dead -- especially when you look at all the new titles still being released (4K growth is stronger than ever right now), the flood of boutiques rising to meet collector demand, and some of the other factors I mentioned in the video. In 30-40 years, maybe the situation will be a little different. But for the time being and foreseeable future, I don't think physical is going anywhere.
I do agree Netflix is a problem -- they definitely need to get their act together and release more of their stuff on physical. I'm super annoyed with them, because they actually have a few films I want to own physically (Zack Snyder films, Michael Bay, etc). But consider this: Even when physical media was at peak mainstream levels, we still didn't get every movie ever made released on physical media. That's always been a factor to some degree or another. There are thousands of films that have never even made it to blu-ray, or even DVD in some cases. So to some extent , that's just the nature of the biz and has been going on for a long time. As streaming becomes more and more expensive, physical media will become more and more popular again. One day streaming will get to expensive and die just like cable and physical media will remain.

I started collecting CDs 6 years ago and have a huge collection now! I continue to buy them anytime I find an album I like at a music store or I usually get at least one anytime I go to a concert. In fact, I go out of my way to check out physical media stores very often. It is always exciting to me to find new ones, and I appreciate the ones I have collected.
I've recently started collecting vinyls too, and have several shelves full of my favorite movies on DVD or Blu-ray. I don't pay for any TV/movie streaming services and never will. Just Spotify, because of how much music I can discover on there. But Im still buying the physical version of my favorite artists music alongside spotify and supporting them.
I prefer to own things and not stream them. Physical copies are better.
I'm with you about physical media and streaming. It is nice having a disc in hand. I will give up multiple streaming services before I give up on my discs. I do like having my TV shows on a streaming service. The Stargate and Star Trek franchises are too large to own.😢
The only bad side to media ownership is space. I am running out of room. Cost is a consideration if you wish to upgrade or come across cooler packaging (looking at you Hunger Games steelbook box set).
Yeah I completely agree. Nothing quite matches the whole experience of being able to choose a film off your shelves after browsing, hold it in your hands, admire the artwork, clean the disc if needed, put it in the player, etc. There's a certain nostalgic value to even just going through that ritual... it can almost be kind of therapeutic.
I agree the space issue can definitely be challenging. I just added a new storage unit to my movie room not that long ago, and I can already tell that running out of space is probably not going to be too far off in my future... especially as my collection grows a little bit faster than I anticipated LMAO!😆 (and I agree, the double dipping definitely doesn't help lol!)
@@TheOriginalFuzz I don't care about the cases -- so I store all of my DVDs in binders -- and have a ton that all fit under my bed. So, if you don't care about cases -- solving the space problem with DVDs is easy.

Naw I wasn't too interested in that particular set. I'm happy enough owning all the studio album box sets (and having them in surround sound, no less). What I had really been hoping we would get from Genesis for the longest time was updated blu-ray releases of all those all old awesome DVD concerts... namely, Live At Wembley, The Way We Walk, and When in Rome. But then I learned that it appears all those concerts were shot on video... and are of such a low source resolution and quality that they would look like total crap if put out on blu ray. So sadly, it's not likely to happen. I'm kind of surprised the band didn't have the foresight at the time to capture their concert films on a more future-friendly medium (i.e. 35 mm film stock). They were certainly big enough and could afford it.
@@TheOriginalFuzzThere are unofficial releases of these. When in Rome was recorded in HD but as far as I know the only way to see it in HD is when it is shown on AXS TV if you have cable. It's fantastic. The DVD is OK, sounds great but has disappointing DVD quality video.

It does appear it was shot on HDTV video, so I would think we would at least be able to get a passable blu-ray out of the band for this title... it drives me nuts that they refuse to release it for the fans on blu ray. They need to get with the times! Honestly, I've not been too impressed with how the band has conducted itself in recent years. I was really hoping they would film and release the Last Domino tour (which I did not get to see), but then I heard there would be no blu-ray release of this last tour. I was really bummed... until I saw some of the unofficial UA-cam footage from the tour and saw what shape Phil is in. It was heartbreaking. Now I understand why they didn't want to release a blu-ray of the latest tour. He's sitting the whole time, his voice did not sound good, and they had to change the key of the songs so drastically to accommodate his voice, that it almost didn't even sound like the same band anymore (they've always changed keys over the years, but The Last Domino tour was really extreme in this regard).
Still hoping someday we get a When in Rome blu ray, but it doesn't seem like the band has any interest in doing that. And I'm just not satisfied with my DVD. I do have cable and know the channel you're talking about... but that's just not going to cut it for me (plus they usually cut songs out of those broadcasts anyway). I need to own it in HD! lol
One thing I didnt hear you mention as a negative about the streaming services - when a studio decides to license out their products to a competitor streaming service for a period of time. Case in point - the Star Trek TOS/TNG movies. Signed up for Paramount+ thinking you were getting access to OG trek? Nope. Its on MAX now. And for who knows how long. whip out your wallet buddy.....
The only things that I have through streaming are either movies that came with a digital code with a DVD/Blu-ray. A few movies that I could care less about that I bought free with the digital shipping credits on Amazon and I have a few from a VUDU gift card someone gave me. But I ripped all of those and have them on a hard drive and can burn a copy whenever I want. I do keep every piece of media on digital file for ease to flip through when I'm too lazy to get off the couch but if I really want to sit down and enjoy a movie I throw the disc in.
The streaming tipping point came for me 3/4 months ago. Sick and tired of good movies I wanted to watch no longer on the service. I’m done. Physical ownership. This is the way.

Hi Fuzz ,How I wish we had the range of 4K discs you have in the states in Austraila we get mostly the main stream films on 4k if we are lucky sometimes just on normal Blu ray only but we are starting to see older titles being released on 4K but very slowly, We have a great company here called Umbrella Entertainment which puts out some great collectors Editions on Blu ray sometimes 4k The Terrifier collectors edition was just one great example and many other collector editions sell out before release which is great to see.
I hope you are right. It will be one sad day if physical media where to dissappear.
It won't, and my DVD collection will outlive me. At worst it will become a niche industry but there is a certain segment of the market that will always want physical media.
I bought a DVD player this summer and started buying DVDs again. The Blu Ray player was out of my budget.
Dying or Niche, it won’t make much difference to me. I am not going to pay for pure niche prices.
I enjoy collecting physical media and I do a lot of other things with it. It’s one of my favorite things, but I’m a certain movie connoisseur it’s better to own it than destroy because you don’t own it that’s one thing I do like about physical media you have it they never take it away and whatever the next thing it should be fully backwards like the regions of 4K. That’s the biggest thing and you get movie quality in your house.
For me, the recent prices hikes, ad tiers, password and IP address crackdowns, combined with very little original content on each platform has made me realize I want to go back to just outright buying stuff. Im not going to get conned back into a cable paradigm again. in 2010, I cut the cord. In 2024 I cut the stream.

Younger people don’t buy any kind of physical media. I own a ton of cd’s,Blu-ray’s,box sets,etc…my adult children don’t own any. Zero. I get it that streaming is immediate and this generation works this way,specially with the introduction of cell phones/computers. I remember having to wait until the news came on at night to find out what was happening in the world. Now,that information is immediately available,sometimes live. There’s a market for physical products,as for people like me who collect stuff. Just like iTunes killed off the cd market,streaming services are trying the same with movies.

As a person in a small town, to me it’s dying. Not really anywhere close to by anything physical. Allot of online stores are pretty high.
I've always found online prices to be less expensive than brick-and-mortars overall... unless we're talking about a specialty boutique or limited edition-type release. To the extent this stuff is more expensive now, I think it's just because prices are rising across the board (both online and at brick-and-mortars), due to inflation and economic circumstances. But i think online shopping is pretty much the new model for a niche collector's market like this. Physical media is no longer mainstream, so it's not going to be in many mainstream stores. Personally, I haven't bought hardly any physical media in a store for like 10 years. I've been shopping online for this stuff for a long time (like 20+ years). So nothing really feels like it's changing that much for me, in terms of availability. I still get all the titles I want delivered to my door. And I love the convenience of that. Buy used DVDs in batches. I am fortunate and I live in California where there is this incredible used DVD/CD store called Rasputins about 5 miles from my house, but yeah I hear you -- if you don't have an option like that -- take my reco and start looking at used DVDs online.

Yes baseball cards are still king of the sportscard market with Pokémon cards also very popular with younger buyers. The print runs are in the millions.

Physical media is never gonna go away with movies, for many reasons I’ll point out some the picture and sound quality is greatly superior (even a standard Blu-ray in an average player looks better and sounds better then any streaming service) It’s cheaper to buy your favorite movie instead of constantly subscribe to streaming services to watch them, let’s say you buy your favorite movie for $20 that you can have them watch literally for the rest of your life, compare that to re-subscribing to a streaming service every time you wanna watch it. Fans and collectors of movies people that want to buy a movie that’s not super popular I want to watch it 10 years from now let’s be real you can’t find everything on streaming. And finally the most important one anybody that has common sense buys physical copies of their movies. Anybody that just buys a digital copy is a moron plain and simple, if you buy the physical you get a superior version and you get a digital code.
Normally i'm shaking my head at videos like this cause to me it's a stupid question "Is physical media dead?" (or dying)... The clear answer is a ringing NO! it's changed yes, but not dead... Then the word "Worldwide" crossed my mind and i thought about my county of Denmark and that way i would almost say "Yes! it's pretty much dead"... No real stores left selling "ALL" formats brand "NEW", ALOT of movies only released on DVD in a "VERY" limited run. Danish music artists "NOT" releasing music on cd's. Only "1" official Danish movie released on 4k "YEARS" ago, no real danish boutique labels... The list goes on. No wonder why 99% of what i pick up is imported. :(
Great video, Fuzz! I've never worried about actual literal death of physical media (implying zero options to media anywhere), but I am concerned about studio heads opting against the release of more and more titles. Ahem, Disney, I'm looking at you. That aside I do have a question: if the future of physical media is so bright and explosive, why is it that BD player manufacturers have all but abandoned the field? First it was Oppo, then Samsung, and the likes of Sony and LG haven't launched a new model in years. Is Panasonic the only serious player anymore (aside from the premium $5000+ companies)? Surely those companies understand the strength of the physical media market and are clamoring to meet that demand.
I'm not too concerned about that. I think someone else will eventually come along and enter (or re-enter) the market on 4K players if the demand is there. I think for a period of time, it looked like streaming was taking over completely and some companies acted on that believing there's no point in investing in the future of a technology they think could be going away. But I think the climate could be changing on that line of thinking, and I do think we're going to see a resurgence in physical media (if we're not already starting to see it)... and that could result in new models eventually being manufactured. But admittedly, that's also why I have a few different 4K players (Panny UB820 and Sony X700 -- plus an older Samsung unit)... I wanted to make sure I had the ability to play these discs in the future should players stop being produced altogether (future-proofing). But I don't really think that's going to happen anytime soon. The market always adapts to changing consumer/collector preferences, and I think we're probably just in a bit of a transition period right now -- which is maybe part of why we haven't seen new models introduced in recent years. Is it true that Disney isn't going to be releasing on Blu-Ray anymore. I used to have a DVD Recorder that I used all the time
No, not exactly... the situation with Disney is more complex than that. Disney got out of the physical media game in Australia, but they seem to be re-igniting their physical media production in the U.S. There are a lot of titles under the Disney umbrella that have not been released on 4K, because they were putting all their eggs in the streaming basket. But now that streaming is turning out to not be profitable for them, they seem to be going back to physical media a bit (with titles like Prey and the Mandalorian coming to physical, as well as the upcoming James Cameron films The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic and Aliens... and presumably Terminator not too far behind). We'll see where it goes from here. But Disney is still releasing plenty of stuff on blu ray.. that's not going away. Keep in mind they also own the 20th Century Fox library, and I believe they also made a deal with Mill Creek not too long ago to distribute a bunch of their titles on blu ray. So we're just kind of waiting to see what happens with Disney.

I live in South East Asia Fuzz and physical media is very popular and because I'm only a 4 hour flight away from Japan the mecca of physical media I have many more options because when I think of Physical media I don't just think of movie and tv shows but video games CDs Vinyls books but I don't know how much of a market there is for movies in Japan I'm sure there are some but I don't know how Popular movies on 4k blu-ray or DVD is in Japan it's mostly for gamers and some music lovers. It was Netflix disc 1st then a streaming app took over & did very well since blockbuster ending & Hollywood video
Not sure but physical media is harder to come by. Some Best Buy’s do not carry it. Outlets
like Costco no longer do. The best option is on line like Amazon.
Yeah I stopped looking for physical media at brick-and-mortar retail stores probably close to a decade ago. It's still very much available... but it's just not as mainstream anymore, so a lot mainstream stores have reduced or eliminated their stock because it doesn't sell as well compared to other products. But I've been shopping online for this stuff for years, and I can almost always find what I want online.
Yep, Internet for new stuff and we have a super cool used DVD/CD store in California called Rasputin's. Love that store.

I think the more and more things on streaming get censored, the more people will turn back to physical media so they can watch their films or TV shows in their original form, or closer to their original form.
Oh I totally agree! I think they're shooting themselves in the feet with the censorship. That's definitely not good look. And people do notice and care.
In addition, the recent "revoke of ownership" of digital downloads (Sony vs Discovery) should really open some eyes and push folks back to physical media.
I just bought a dvd player again today. And started my collection back up again after being tired of spending money on streaming services that may or may not have what I want to watch and missed physically picking out what u wanted to watch. Being a big music guy, I feel like I've been seeing streaming do a number on us for quite some time. It's so sad that our culture doesn't have the appreciation for the arts that it once did. Awesome video it's me again from yesterday lol I didnt want to add to many comments on the video to turn stuff off on that 4k player so I like to thank you so much do far my new plsyer hasnt had any issues I turned off everything you showed I did turn off the 24p with everything turned off terminator 2 has awesome sound a good dark hdr10 picture however they dont move in 4k bit that's ok 4k seems to show me it has better sound then bluray so far and pirates of the caribbean is more enjoyable not all washed out it looks dark with the 2 settings you instructed to turn off on the somy bluray 4k uhd picture I'm happy it dont look washed out tbh so yeah my 4k experience seems to love it more for sound for he theater then picture so happy dawg your videos I'm subscribing to you one day I like to have a chat with you I got so much questions about future tech
Well to be honest, the picture quality on most 4K discs usually looks a lot better than what we got with T2 and Pirates of the Carribean. Those are probably the worst titles to start with (even though I too bought T2 as one of my first 4K titles... but I learned after the fact that most 4K transfers are much better than that. In fact, the T2 release was a studio error -- they used the wrong master for the 4K disc). The titles I mentioned in my "Must-own reference 4K movies" video I did a few months back are much better in terms of visuals... you'll notice a much bigger difference. Overall, I'd say it took me a little time for my eyes to adjust to 4K. The format didn't immediately "click" with me... it probably took me about 8-10 months of watching 4K content over time before I really started to appreciate everything the 4K format has to offer (it's not just the higher resolution, but also the HDR and wider color gamut that make the 4K image so appealing). Overall I notice that 4K images just tend to have more depth and "pop," to them compared to blu ray, and the colors usually look amazing.
The most worrying thing for me is the future of players. There's rumours of Panasonic stopping them as well.
Yeah that's a good point. I have 3 different 4K players for that reason (including a Panny Ub820)... for future-proofing purposes. Though it's possible we may see other companies get into the 4K player manufacturing game later on if the format continues to grow (as I believe it is doing right now -- in terms of titles being released and disc sales).
It's concerning that Sony and Microsoft will stop producing consoles with a blu ray drive, and how things are going, it will happen in this generation, next gen is digital-only that's for sure. I know xbox and ps are not the choice for film collectors, but for many people is the only way to watch a dvd or blu ray
Not worried on that front. Own 3 DVD players (one is an old one that I just kept as a spare), and also have a PS4 with a Blu-ray drive. Since I bought my first DVD player in the late 90s -- I've only had one unit go bad. And they still make them. At worst there will ALWAYS be a niche market for DVD/Blu-Ray players -- so nothing to worry about. Also, at some point I'm going to digitize my collection (and then will move the physical media to plastic bins in the garage as "archive" backups).
Max & Netflix making people mad by removing movies & shows then a month u be lucky if they get it back

Streaming does not have everything I want to watch, like Only the Strong. Streaming has become just as, if not more, expensive than cable. Some companies I do NOT want to give my money to, like Disney. I buy used when I want a Disney movie so they do not get my money with the exception of the 4k Prey, which I pre-ordered just to let them know there is a demand for physical media.
I hear ya! I don't like buying from Disney either, but I too pre-ordered Prey just to send a message that this stuff will sell (plus, I wanted to own it anyway LOL!). But yeah, "cutting the cord" is not at all what it used to be. Streaming has become a bit of a mess with every company under the sun getting in on the action with their own streaming service. The commentary on CDs is very true. It's a small market sure, but even the tiniest local artists I know still release music on disc (and some even cassette) for die-hard fans. It's very cheap to produce so it's pure profit for those folks so everyone wins. Hell, Daft Punk re-released their last studio album with additional content this year and I was happy to buy it. As you said, the quality is as good as you can get aside from the very rare placebo quality releases put out on SACD and whatnot.

How do you find a specific title on your shelf? It looks like you have just randomly put your collection up there lol 😂
I totally get where you're coming from. It may appear that way (especially when I have a lot of titles pulled for a video), but they're not up there randomly. First off, I have my shelves more or less memorized, so I usually know either roughly or precisely where everything is. But aside from that, I do have a fairly loose organizational system... it's just my own custom system. I don't organize my titles the way a lot of other collectors do. For example, I don't do any alphabetizing at all, because I don't like how limiting that system is for displaying titles on the shelves where I want them to appear (with some of my favorites occupying prime shelf real estate).
So here's how I organize: First, I organize by genre... I have sections for horror, sci-fi, and action, and then I have a small miscellaneous section for anything that doesn't squarely fit in the other 3 genres. And then within each genre, I group titles together according to my own custom preferences -- i.e. my favorite franchises, themes, directors, actors, labels, etc. I realize my system isn't as pretty to look at as maybe the way other collectors do things, but it's flexible enough to allow me to move things around when I'm adding new titles to the collection, reorganizing, changing the display aesthetic, etc.
Now if my collection were to grow to double the size it is now, who knows - I might have to come up with a slightly different system to manage it better LOL! But at the modest size it is now, my current system works best for me. Believe it or not, it's actually easier for me to find titles the way I have it set up. Thanks for the question... you bring up a good point that I'm sure others were wondering about as well.
part of the fun of physical movie watching is browsing the shelves for something you want and then plucking it out to watch it.
I want all my favourite films and shows unedited, cut or censored from the original. Streamed stuff is constantly being tampered with and if physical media has reached its limit then all the better. Collecting them like beloved old books. I think the more we see streamed manipulation the more people will return to the material, touchable media. Or at least the people that give a toss.

Im sick to death of this streaming crap. I miss going down the local video store and renting. I like buying my bluray discs. The world has become a lazy boring mess and i for one hate it. The internet is the worst thing ever created.
The only reason I have internet 🛜 is to buy all my physical media online know so I got no choice
