Nailed it on the Orslow 107's. I love my iron hearts, but the orslow 107 is the pair. I can see myself wearing every day wearing to work haven't tried the black, but the fit truly feels vintage and modern.
Firstly, thank you for putting this video together. May I recommend the Railcar Fine Goods Spikes in whatever black they offer. They make short to medium-run jeans in really interesting fabrics. The Spiles X057 Black grey weft is a really crunchy denim. Great fabric. Long wear in period but worth it. But the Spikes fit - high to med waist, slim, tapered leg is just a great fit - it's like a Levi 505 or LVC 1954 501 but with a button fly. Agree with your views on Orslow. Be nice to see you wearing all the jeans. Cheers.
Rogue Territory Stealth deserves to make any black selvedge denim list. Black warp, charcoal weft. Fades beautifully

I love mine too. Think it's only 11 Oz weight. Very comfortable.

Any recommendations on breaking them in? I have a pair and I can’t break these guys in for anything! Super stiff. 🪦
@@PhantomofTheOctagon I personally don't subscribe to any break-in method other than wearing them often.
If you're going for high contrast fades, I'd wear em hard, wear them often, and put off washing for a few months. If you don't care about high contrast fades or you prioritize lifespan/longevity, I'd wear them for a couple of months then cold soak them. Cold soak will remove some of the starch and soften them up, perhaps at the expense of the highest contrast fading but prolonging the life of the denim. Not that you won't still get nice fades - ime and from what i've seen, an early soak just tends to soften the fades a bit since the denim isn't creasing as sharply. The sharp creasing helps with high contrast fades, but can cause earlier blowouts due to the friction.
TCB offer their 50's slim cut in black warp/ white weft on their website. I always thought there was something off with black warp/ white weft denim, and I think you're spot on when calling it a 'a little dated'.

From what I read about the Iron Heart overdye process basically everything they overdye starts out as a normal complete with garment with buttons and all, the only thing that is done afterwards is the leather patch is sewed on.
Phenomenal list and great video. I’d like to add Oni‘s Aizumi x Black Secret Denim as an honorable mention 😎 It’s based on their infamous Secret Denim, but the warp is Aizumi dyed (Indigo & Black) and the weft is died black (Sulphuric, I guess). I went for the 679, but they’re available in all common Oni cuts. The fabric is absolutely stunning!

I’m glad you did a video on black selvedge. Thank you. I’ve recently bought a pair of matte black Thursday Captains (highly recommend them by the way) and I wondered about how black denim fades.
I had a solid pair of black selvedge APCs, but I grew out of them and sold them! just got some new APC Standard blue jeans so after I get some good use out of those i’ll probably find a good black selvedge!
Levi's M&C have done this overdying method on some indigo selvedge. Colour is fab and you just know it going to fade beautifully.

@@CeeAreDee yes the Arcs are hidden on this model. Interestingly enough they 2nd dye seems to be black and sits almost like a resin and where it peels off the cotton thread is almost white or light blue. Model number is 531242 made (like all LS finishes) in Turkey. You can have it if you want it's too big for me (36-34).
I own a pair of Levi's Rigid dragon 541 in Black. Warp is pure raw black and weft is standard gray/white. I also really love the mixture of yellow/orange stitching on that jeans because it really stands out way more than indigo color.

@@CeeAreDee Those are still in brand new state. I rarely wear those as I am more of an indigo person. I used to think it was lost money until I saw your video. This was purely an accidental acquisition.

I'm on day two of breaking in a pair of Mister Freedom Lot 64 jeans in Midnight Denim, which have a very dark indigo warp and a black weft very similar to the 3Sixteen shadow selvedge but just a little weightier at 16oz. Man, I love these jeans already and I can't wait to see how they develop.

Yes, they have them in Slim Strait and Slim Taper. Slim Taper are a really nice fit. Not as slim as most, to me anyway.
Faded black Levi's has always been my bread and butter but I'm super curious about bashing out some fades on these raw black Kato's - wish me luck!

I got the shadow selvedge because of this video. I was all about the tellason and as I was ordering them you got onto the shadow selvedge and I stopped and ordered those instead. Inky blue and black mixed? YES!!! So Im 2 months in and fading has started v well. Thanks

I got a steal of black easy guy Naked and famous, from Nordstrom Rack..... 47 bucks. Most comfortable denim. My go to pair is a 3 year old Matix Selvedge... and the nnf jeans broke in like no other. Now I’m dying to get blue.

Managed to snag a pair of Bravestar's Japanese Black warp White weft 14oz, they are really cool looking. Yes they smell like sulfur. They have some great cross hatching to them. I've also got some double black 21oz and another 12.5 stretch double black. Everyone needs a black pair in their wardrobe. I will probably get in the future some Ironheart non-fade black.
Stretch double black is actually really practical. Have some myself.
I actually prefer black warp with white weft. It just looks more like denim to me. Black warp with black weft has less character and can almost look like chinos.
I also have the same opinion. I do own one black x black denim and wear that only when I am looking for super dark look.
But when they fade down, I just prefer the higher contrast.
@@CeeAreDee I just managed to find a BxW pair of Unbranded’s discontinued UB104 (new condition) on Poshmark in my size and ordered them. I might have to send them in to get hemmed to my size, but still very excited!
Idk if you have seen the "aquaman's jeans" video on Jason Momoa's channel. schaeffers garment hotel made a black overdye jean that Jason wore in "Road To Paloma", He shows his faded pair in the video. But it's very a very expensive jean being made in hollywood and all.

I’ve noticed within the past 9 years I haven’t really worn blue jeans. I’ve had a bunch of raw denim in high school, but now adays I tend to rock cargo pants or black jeans. Maybe my sense of fashion changed, but I do miss my first pair of 3sixteen 😢

Have you had the chance to get your hands on any of the "gunpowder" black from Indigofera? It's a rope dye made from actual gunpowder constituents (charcoal, salpetre and sulfur) made to achieve some interesting grey tone fades. I visited their HQ last autumn and got myself a pair of "buck" jeans in gunpowder and I really enjoy them! They even had the smell of gunpowder for quite some time, which I found quite nice.

IIRC, Iron Heart offers both OD (over dyed) and MB (mad black) process; the difference being once- and twice-dipped, respectively.

I'm trying to break in my black s301 Iron Hearts. Lots of hard work. The 21 oz denim is trying to break me. Lol. Slim fits can be a bit challenging.

I managed to get a pair of 3sixteen ST 220x (Meadow collaboration) on eBay new for a bargain. Looking forward to breaking them in but would love a pair of the shadow selvedge!

Great vid. Just getting in to denim so very useful. Would be great to see a black denim jacket review. I have been searching and think I may go with the cryptic RGT supply jacket. Not a huge trucker pocket fan. Any other options you could suggest? Also, from a silly amount of research I really like the 21oz red weft unbranded jeans. Are these like unicorns now? Not seen any for sale. Lastly, what's the consensus on second hand denim? Part of me thinks it's a little grim but the other part thinks the cost of a true Selvedge outfit (denim tux) plus maybe a well made flannel adds up to over £500 quite easily. Then you add the red wings and you are up to £1,000 for one outfit.
I have a pair of blackxwhite selvage denim from Gustin it is model#77. The fabric is 13.25oz and it is from cone mills. I dont know when they will run this fabric again but i picked them up for a steal at 79 USD.

Great subject. Black denim is more puzzling to me than indigo. I own several pair of black jeans. PBJ, Iron Heart, Brave Star, Left Field, Oni and a couple of jackets by Japan Blue and Indigofera. I can't say that I have a favorite. They all have a unique merit. I wear the Indigofera shirt jacket (copeland) a lot. The Oni jeans are a high-rise taper made from loose weave 20oz denim that has a hairy, matte finish. They're very comfortable in terms of fit. The Left Field is a Chinese (black/black) fabric that has surprisingly nice character. My Iron Hearts and PBJs are slimmer fitting so I'm wearing them less because I'm liking roomier cuts lately.
Duke, that’s a great collection! The IF gunpowder denim is amazing, you’re right. Also the Black Maria form left field almost made it on to the list. But they are sold out in most sizes. Testimony to the quality. How are the oni’s fading?
@@CeeAreDee Thanks Matt. Yes, the Black Maria. That's it. They're really better than you might expect. The Oni is the 902ZR-BK. It's not really fading so much. It just has a pleasant, soft texture. It's different from the others mentioned. btw...I have several Oni jeans and a jacket so I was curious to wear their black denim. My fave Oni right now is the 602 (Blue/Blue) ...it's really beautiful denim and not like secret denim. It's very smooth, not slubby textured. Fading nicely.

Are Double RL jeans any Good, been eying a pair for like 6 months but having other options that you mentioned here.
RRL do a decent job. The fits are on point and the denim is decent. Can’t say anything against them.
Do you recommend the same initial soak process for a brand new pair of raw selvedge black denim Vs indigo dyed?
Yeah. I’d say all denim could do with a soak. They weaving process is very similar and there will be some things in there to get rid of.

New to selvage denim here, starting off with Iron Heart 634s Indigo and Indigofera Gunpowder Clint. I liking how the 21oz IHs are settling in. My first impression's on the Clint's is that they have a pretty tight weave, and that the dye will fade and contrast pretty quick, curious to see how it goes.

For sure. Just make sure that you turn them inside out. And not hotter than 40 degrees. Gentle wash and detergent for dark clothing.
