JAPANESE RAW SELVEDGE DENIM HISTORY: THE NEW OSAKA 5!

- Japanese Raw Selvedge Denim has had a long, long foothold in the menswear and mens fashion scene, and has completely changed the way menswear is viewed to this day. Japan has a long rooted passion for heritage American style, having morphed it into a brainchild of their own, and completely changed the scope of what is possible within the raw selvedge denim world!
Raw denim was taken under Japan's wing and has been tried, tested, experimented on, and perfected over time, which is why Japans knowledge on raw denim jeans and raw selvedge denim has grown to incredible heights! We are seeing raw denim jeans unlike anything we have ever seen before, and boy are they absolutely amazing!
This whole craze began with the Osaka 5, where the brands Studio D'Artisan, Denime, Fullcount, Evisu, and Warehouse & Co. all began making attempts at elevating and perfecting the raw denim jean in the 1980's and so forth. But today, I wanted to talk about what I feel is the new Osaka 5, of which I dub the Okayama 7.
These Okayama 7 consists of the brands Samurai Japan, Momotaro, TCB Jeans, Kapital, Pure Blue Japan, Tanuki, and ONI. These brands are doing AMAZING things for raw selvedge denim, and deserve their own light in the grand scheme of raw selvedge denim and raw denim jeans.
Disclaimer: Samurai Japan WAS in fact rooted in Osaka and now manufactures in Okayama.

I figure the disclaimer and this comment will hopefully be enough, but if anything if the guilt kills me enough I'll most likely end up reuploading it with that caption. But again thank you for helping making me feel better about this! Often when I'm doing these videos I go heavily off script because I feel it goes much more naturally that way, but what happens with that is I end up skipping over or missing valuable info, much like what happened here. I ultimately have to take this as a learning experience and be better at memorizing or note taking info while I'm recording these. 🫡🫡

Love your videos but SELVAGE DENIM started in the US of America 1st. Then the Japanese took it over because of the love for American Heritage Style. They brought our shuttle looms. Great video.

It actually hurts that TCB is seen by some folk (definitely not you, Alejandro!) as some kind of Levi's tribute act when even their earlier releases outperform LVC by such a distance. Years ago, I bought a pair of one-wash LVC 1966 501s that lasted one season. Three months and they were in the bin. TCB's 60s cut jeans, based on the 1966 501, are maybe my favourite jeans and they are ageing beautifully. They've also brought out the Storm Cats Drive jacket, based on the Lee Storm Rider, which looks amazing.
Although I've never sampled any of their denim, shout out to Tanuki for their fantastic heavy Shinkai t-shirt. Lose yourself in that indigo! Thanks for another great video, what a job you're doing.
Ahhh man thank you so much for real! I appreciate the love and the compliments my friend, as well as your insight on TCB and LVC! Funny enough, a few months ago before I ended up meeting Ben Nissan (a wonderful and knowledgeable gentleman at Williamsburg Garment Co.) I had actually stopped by the Levi’s flagship store in Soho, and almost pulled the trigger on not just a pair of LVC 1930s jeans, but also a made in Japan jean by them as well. However, my girlfriend could see that I was not 100% on them, and convince me that my money was better Well spent elsewhere. I’m glad I listened to her, as a week later I ended up getting my TCB 50s from Ben at WGC, and sheesh were they INCREDIBLE! I definitely agree with you. The passion outperforms LVC and you can see it. It’s evident!
Also spoiler alert, I bought both their 1890s jean and denim jacket on preorder, so when they come in I have a video coming on those two soon 😈👀 Don’t tell anyone 🤫🤐

PBJ has a -003 cut that is their straight cut fit. Not very wide but most Japanese brands don't really go to that wide fit anyways. All the brands listed are awesome, thanks for another banger video :)

Great video man! It's kinda funny because when I first started looking into selvedge denim (like 2 months ago) I actually found people talking about brands like Sugarcane, Samurai and Oni more often than the Osaka 5. Either way all these brands deserve their credit since they are unique.
Hey man, glad to have a fresh face in the community (assuming that you hadn’t been around prior to the two months denim spree as you said)! Recently I feel like Sugar Cane, Samurai, and ONI have been releasing banger after banger jeans, especially dabbling in new wider leg fits to accommodate today’s relaxed look!
The Osaka 5 are amazing at what they do, keeping true to that Japanese Americana look that they made so popular. These guys are just completely morphing the mold and stepping out of the box, and I LOVE it! Glad to have you around here, my man!

@@AlejandroJomar Thanks man your channel is a great resource for selvedge denim (especially the wider fits which I'm into as well). I ordered some TCBs 50s but unfortunately did not like the high waist so I returned them but right now I have some Left Field Smokestacks, SDA 801s, and N&F True Guys MIJ12s since they are slubby.

No problem at all! As for iron heart, I’m actually not really all informed on them as a brand to be honest. 😭 I definitely have to get my hands on one of those sooner or later, I’ve just never owned a pair, and never really held one in real life either
