Agree, should of spent the time to see what nail techs are supposed to do how they’re trained if they’re doing it the proper way and that the client isn’t also RIPPING off their nails then saying “the product ruined my nails”
Unless your nails grow really really fast they still should last 3-4 weeks. All the nail techs I know do refills every 3-4 weeks depending on the growth. Never every two weeks.
LadyNailz Your 100% right & it is misinformation & sadly the type of misinformation that affects nail techs like me & all the others here who are honest hygienic & loyal to their customers, such a shame to see the ignorance of adults
Actually cellphones are not dangerous....there is a common myth that cellphones can cause cancer because of the "radiation" they admit but...they only admit microwaves and radio waves and those are perfectly safe for humans to be around. In every place ur in those waves roam they are only harmful when they are enclosed in a space, then they can heat up objects and cause some dammage. So all in all phones are perfectly safe to have near our faces and body😊 hope that gave u some new information😊
Why would they try and discredit our profession. I do this line of work because I love it and I never rip my clients off. I inform them of everything I’m doing and I educate them along the way. They talking mess but I bet they the main ones that stay in the nail salon.
The Nail Polisher its the same with massage therapists when it comes to sexual assult. Plus most of us hate when people call us masseurs!! So unprofessional!!!
They aren't discrediting your profession. They are warning about what could potentially happen when your carefree about where you get your nails done. I don't know about where you live, but within a 20 minute walk if my home there are probably 10-15 nail salons that would be considered cheap salons. Not all of the employees have gone to school to be a nail tech, they just learn as they go. Also, these salons do just the minimum when it comes to cleaning and sanitizing/sterilizing. Now within that same 20 minute walk there is only maybe 2 "higher end" nail salons where all employees have graduated from a nail tech program and they go above and beyond when it comes to cleanliness. I will only go to these places. I am a hairstylist, so I am educated about these things and what to look for when going to a Nail salon. Not everybody knows this stuff, so we need to rely on shows like this one to show people what could potentially happen to them if they are not careful about where they go.
I really wish these people would talk to an actual nailtec before shaming our profession, that way they might learn something. The nail does not need to breathe, i would think a doctor would know that. The nail we work on is dead, it doesn't need anything, The only way a nail can grow out permanently damaged is if you have damaged the matrix and a nailtec can't do that while working on your nails. If the nailtec is a good nailtec she will have the knowledge on how to NOT damage the nail while removing the gel. It's up to YOU who you go to to get your nails done, look around, is the salon clean? Are the instruments clean? ask to see other nails this nailtec has done. Don't blame the whole industry when it's all up to you who you go to. Just a tip, if you want good nails done, don't choose a cheap salon. Also, i don't know what this woman is on about and why since her nails are differently not all natural. How about talking about what to look for instead of telling people it's all bad? Shame on these people.
You took this completely wrong. They weren't shaming the industry, just trying to teach women how to protect themselves. 1, She did warn that you should go to a clean place. 2, I think we all know the nail doesn't need to breath, she didn't mean that literally. She was saying that it's good to give your nails a break from being worked on so much. The same can be said for a lot of things in our life like make up or applying heat to our hair. It's good to be reminded (and even for the women who don't know) that our nails, our hair, etc needs a break sometimes.
And 3, I know of an older woman who went to a nail salon faithfully every 2 weeks to get acrylic nails for several decades (literally). Her nail beds are now so brittle she can't stand for them to be touched. They are painful even to a gentle touch because (just like the Dr said in the video) they filed her nail beds down for so long that they are now week and brittle. This is a good thing for women to know to protect themselves.
1. No most people buy into the "your nails need to breath" crap and the "let your nails rest" like i said, nails are dead. they were living cells in your body, now they are a dead nail. 2. Nails get weaker with age, nothing weird there, there is NO WAY that doing her nails years ago has affected her nails now since the dead nail she had material on has grown out long long ago and the nails she now has are in no way affected by the treatment. If her nails are painful now it's because of something inside her body since the matrix that creates the nail is the thing that determinis how the nails will grow out. If you are sick, the hair and nails are the lose quality. This show isn't about teaching how to protect, if it was they would say everything i'm saying and they would bring in someone who isn't talking crap. This is all about shaming an industry
+Charlotte Wow! You really believe that what we do to our nails now doesn't affect it in the future just because the nail is dead? That sanding down your nails for over 20 years straight had absolutely 0 affect on them? I originally responded because I thought you were misguided. Now I realize that all you care about is making money. What nail salon do you work at? I want to know so I never go.
Elle Plow Plow Are you kidding? Are you serious right now?? Before spewing your crap, try reading up on what you're saying, maybe you'll learn something.
As a nurse, I can see how having false nails can cause fungus to grow under the nail. But it will not grow due to false nails. The fungus and bacteria will thrive because of poor hygiene. I've had plenty of acrylic and gel nails put on over the years and i wait until my nail grows out before i put new nails on. Just the way I do things for myself. Not all nail techs are horrible. Just saying.
first off nails DO NOT have lungs so they can not breath. Goodness ppl. You get a fungus when acrylic lifts from the nail plate and water gets trapped in between. Ask a professional in this field before you run your mouths. LED is safer and faster anyways. I'm sure the "shop shops" you go to are filthy and do not sanitize instruments are the BIGGEST problem in my field. They only see you as a dollar sign nothing more. So with that being said don't bash our profession cause I've even gone to a doctor who used the f'in internet to diagnose ppl.. SERIOUSLY!!!
I think what she means by breathe is, give them a break from the nail polish, the acrylics, the gels. I know when I go months and months with wearing acrylics, and I take them off, my nails are so brittle underneath, they're flaky, and it takes MONTHS for them to go back to normal. Whereas, if I wear it for a month or two, then take them off, theres little to no damage.
If you go to a professional (not a chop shop) there is no need to give your nail treatments a break. People are misinformed. If you had flaky nails it's because the nail tech damaged them before application.
The reason why your nails are becomes brittle is because the nail tech is over filing your nail plate. Everytime they file your nails becomes thinner and thinner and when they take the nail enhancement off improperly, it takes chunks of the nail plate also. Thats why your nails are so jacked up and weak. Just make sure next time when you get your nails done, tell them you don't want to be buff or file on the nail plate. Enhancements like acrylic or gel is good for your nails because it protects it from water and makes them stronger but if improperly done it will fk up your nails real good. Also, you'll have to live with the lifting if they don't file the nail. The chemist that makes the nail products spend a great deal of time making sure the product is safe and good for the nails but a lot of nail techs mess up the nails.
Someone was either over-filing or not taking them off correctly. You should only file until there is no shine on your nail (very little filing needed), and you should never rip off gel or acrylics. Even if you're just ripping off softened pieces, if it's not easily giving, you're not removing it right.
None of them have a background in cosmetology or are professional nail technicians. They have points, but they're not experienced in that field so they really have no place to say which is worse especially when they probably can't even tell the difference even watching the application method.
Caitlyn Osborne the nail industry is just a business to make a profit it’s nothing to do with health which doctors will look at more unlike nail techs who won’t care. You’re welcome
Caitlyn Osborne well said Caitlyn👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾you are so right they haven’t got a clue about nails, these products are made especially for nail techs to use, untrained people attempting to do a set is often where these damages take place so maybe they ought to do another show talking about that? no nail tech wants to see videos like this it tarnishes us with the same brush
Queen Mummy misinformed. A pepper ball technician is supposed to ensure the health of the nail and upon properly inspecting the nail if it has indications of disease or a disorder wee are to recommend them to a podiatrist because it is illegal to work on nails of that matter. I am in nail school and there is a medical side to nails, it's not all just about glam. You want a healthy hand with healthy nails whether you come in for a basic manicure or for extensions. It's not all about the money but that's on you if you go to those cheap ass, unclean, bacteria filled, we don't turn people away with obvious abrasions of the skin on their toes, don't properly clean their instruments, nail tech doesn't wash hands before treating you typeof salons. Everything you see in a modern day salon is usually all wrong and nasty. They are not doing legal things per state board. Luckily my teacher does not pay and will and grass graduated many successfull clean nail techs who aren't looking for a quick check like these bacteria ridden salons you go to. If you want a quality nail technician be ready to spend some money. You get what you pay for. And many women pay for it when they go into the quick shop salons. (Meaning they end up with fungus)
Here's a common sense statement. UV/LED lamps are about 36 watts. For less than couple minutes. The Sun is a million times stronger. The drive to your nail appointment with your hands on the steering wheel will received way more damage then a little old lamp.
In my humble opinion. Since I kicked fake nails almost 3 years ago, and once all the warn down damaged nail grew out, it took a few months for me to find the right long lasting nail polish and a non light clear gel topper that keeps my color from chipping. But once I figured out what brands work and the gel topper, I love the way my natural nails look, I feel more feminine painting and manicuring my own nails and actually it’s become a therapeutic self love time for myself with my favorite show or UA-cam on. My nails not only grow super fast now but they’re soo much stronger now that I’ve stopped the fake nails. My nails are squared medium/long length and I feel even more confident showing off my real nails with all that money back in my pocket. Plus at least for me, with fake nails something always would happen even though they’re supposed to last so long, like besides the obvious gap after a few days from nail grownth, either the nails just start looking dull or worn down around the edges anyway causing you to go back to the shop for them to damage your nails and skin even more just to have the illusion of nails. I say, put in the extra bit of time, make it relaxing for yourself. You can make time, just make time! And let your real nails grow out and practice doing your own nails. You get much faster the more you do them. Get the wooden sticks to clean around the edges as you go! Also, I feel like it says something more for the girl who’s able to get her nails healthy enough, save her dollars, and does her own manicure that lasts ☝🏽. More so than paying for fake nails that ultimately damage your nails and keep you spending money unnecessarily. It kind of adds to the “Boss Lady” feel being more naturally glam and feminine all at the same time. But, not hating, just saying, my opinion. 💅🏽
Seche Vive is the top coat I use it’s in a blue bottle, and any non chip lasting nail polish. I’ve found the higher end nail polishes do better at not chipping.😉
I’ve been getting my nails done for the past 20 years..I have never had an infection. And my nail beds have never looked like the photos during this video. A bit thinner yes, but you give them a break for a few months to give it a chance to grow again, to breathe.
Natasha Henderson she didn't literally mean breathe like we do , she means give them a break, you use the term breathe for things you need a break for, so let your nails breathe I.e. Give them a break from fake nails
all the dimwit nail techs talking about "nails don't breathe" - the doctors don't meant that the nails ACTUALLY breath in and out oxygen. they just mean to let the nail go natural.
Please do some research on the chemicals used during this process. Toluene - is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent odor. Exposure to toluene can cause eye and nose irritation, tiredness, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache, dilated pupils, tears, anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia, nerve damage, inflammation of the skin, and liver and kidney damage. Workers may be harmed from exposure to toluene. Formaldehyde - can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers Dibutyl Phthalate - causes hypertension, anemia and reduced hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell levels. Dibutyl phthalate triggers inhibited mitochondrial respiration, liver necrosis and peroxisome proliferation. Dibutyl phthalate raises the odds of reduced kidney weight and contact dermatitis Methacrylate compounds - this substance can cause serious eye damage. If inhaled, methyl methacrylate can cause respiratory irritation and labored breathing, and may progress into asthmatic symptoms. Additionally, it may induce narcotic effects such as drowsiness or dizziness. I am not telling you what to do, only offering information so you can make an *informed* choice about what products you wish to be exposed to. Also, consider the nail techs who work in these salons with improper ventilation, protection and often no healthcare. My neighbor (age 13) just lost her mom to lung cancer caused by years of damage to her lungs by working in/around this industry.
-the UV light is safe -LED lights exist if you're that scared of putting your hands in a skin-safe light for 30secs when you sunbathe for hours on end lmao
Lauren Jade exactly! It confuses me when people talk about how “unsafe” the UV lights are. I mean, you get more UV exposure driving in your car. People aren’t flipping out over that.
That’s one reason I don’t get nails done, I got them done once when I was young but I don’t wear long nails so that’s a reason too. You’re kinda right.
Kelsey Matthews But they aren't experienced in gel or acrylic application. They can only treat things when something bad happens. Same with nutrition. They aren't experienced in nutrition much either.
These people know nothing about nail art. If you go to a reputable nail tech you should have no problems with your natural nails. No nail tech who is worth their salt will not file off your nails.
Oh give me a break. I know so many women who've been exposed for many years without any detriment to health. Once in a while let your nails breath. I started wearing acrylic with gel overlays on my nails after 10 years of having natural nails and my hands look wonderful! Ladies get your nails done and stay pretty.
Hi I am a nail tech and actually Acrylics because it covers your nail and holds them in that position and gel is not that bad but it peels and when it peels it takes a layer of your nails with it The dip powder is the most healthiest nail type it has vitamins in them and helps them grow out and when you soak them off it does not damage your nails
To everyone claiming that these doctors' opinions are invalid because nails don't "breathe": Just because cells undergo keratinzation does not mean gas and water cannot pass through these cells at a molecular level. Additionally, your skin (epidermis layer) is keratinzed (albeit not as much as your finger nails), and they still absorb water and gas at small levels. Your epidermi (nails, skin, hair, etc.) are produced to protect the nucleated cells underneath. When you can't do that effectively, for example when bodily sebum is insufficient, you might apply a cream to your skin to retain moisture. Just because cells are keratinzed also doesn't mean irritation/reactions cannot occur (lol we'd be indestructable); just think about inflammation from pimples, burns, or rashes. Most importantly, these karatinzed cells are present to protect, if you're stripping the epidermis of those protective cells, you are more likely to experience water loss (i.e. dry nails), infection, etc. Once you erode a significant portion of the nail bed, the nail matrix can only grow at a certain rate to produce more keratinzed cells, so you have prolonged lack of protection, brittle nails, etc. and yes you need TIME for the nail to recover its protective layer or "breathe" so to speak. Lastly, as a student specializing in toxicology and physiology, I think it's always a good idea to take Paracelsus' advice: the dose makes the poison a.k.a. everything is good in moderation, a tiny bit of sodium and chlorine is essential to life, but an excess of water can kill you.
Acrylics, gels , shellac all destroyed my nail . I wore fake nails for years. It took that long for my nails to grow healthy and strong as there were deep ridges in my nails. Each time they would grow they would break at the ridge. ...Now I have over 150 nail polishes. I polish my natural nails now and actually get more compliments than I did when I wore fake nails.
It makes me just shake my head in disbelief when I hear from clients that they hear “On The Doctors or Dr Oz...” that this is bad or that is bad for your nails. A lot of this video, in listening, is just common damn sense. I have been a licensed, practicing nail technician for 30 years this June. First of all, nails don’t breathe. Second, if you look at the nails on the video, those have been created by a profoundly long duration of time that fungus has ate away at the nail. Now in order to have this happen, more than likely, the customer had a darker color polish on so couldn’t see what was going on and went a very long time between fills or the nail tech played ignorant to signs of it when they were filling and just kept covering up the issue. And I will agree that this is from bacteria but, more times than not, it is actually the customers fault. This is just a scenario that I’m throwing out there...noticed some lifting on this nail or broke a nail but I don’t have time to come get it replaced so I’ll just throw some glue in it after I get finished doing the dishes and wait until I go in for my fill. Ummmm, in a week. So now, the nail has been glued, after getting dirty dish water in it. The bacteria sits there for about a week. Customer goes in for her fill and just mentions that her nail feels somewhat sore so she thinks she may have cracked it down into the meat. As the nail tech starts taking the dark polish off...😱 what do you think happened??? The nail bed is totally dark. Now let me ask, who’s fault is that?? The bacteria they are talking about was more than likely the customers own doing. BUT, I’m not saying that every nail tech or salon follows all the state board regulations. Why dont they put someone on there that knows what they’re talking about and maybe educate consumers on how to find out their states rules and regulations and what sanitizing solutions are legal in their state? Just basic questions to ask. Also let everyone know, that as a consumer, you have the right to ask to see what Sanitizer is being used and if you have a concern about a chemical, ask to see an MSDS sheet for it. YOU have the right to see these things. And for gods sake, common sense would tell you if you’re going to someone and they’re actually hurting you when they’re doing your nails, find someone else.
I started getting acrylic monthly manicures a year ago for my birthday and when they showed the nasty nail picture I was like oh brother! i see a professional and have never had anything like that happen. I also gave my nails a break for a few weeks and took them off and they looked fine. they were of course tender for a day but were fine after that. I am sorry that they shared a dramatic story about acrylics...
This is when the doctor is talking about something she knows very little about. Those nails were damaged due to drills being on high speeds. Most of the nail lamps now don't produce enough UV rays to damage your skin. And you should be getting your nails done every 2 weeks if its acrylic, gel, hard gels or a regular manicure. I could go on but yea.
I personally love getting my nails done and I do all the time but think about it, when was the last time you've seen a doctor or nurses wear nail enhancers? Our fingers/nails are in constant contact with the world around us and are a perfect breeding ground all kinds of fungul and bacterial infections. Just because its not visible doesn't mean its not there. I am always doing things while I have my nails, cooking and touching raw meats, house cleaning, dirty laundry, toilet scrubbing, cleaning my dirty mop, washing dishes, taking out the trash, BBQing, touching our animals, changing diapers, counting money the list goes on. No matter how well and how much you clean your nails they will always be dirty.
Our nails receive their oxygen from our bloodstream they don't breathe, however as a nail tech of 20yrs i've learned that its not a bad thing to give your nails a break here and there, acrylics can weaken the natural nail so a break can be refreshing xx
Perfectly safe? Not quite.... Chemicals used for acrylic/gel nails. Ladies, I am not telling you what to do, only offering information so you can make a choice about what products you wish to be exposed to. it’s terrible of them to say this, I can guarantee few days later they found themselves in a nail salon too having a set of nails after sharing utter nonsense🤔
Acrylic hurts to come off and makes your nails disgusting because of the glue. I’ve had it before. And on the other hand, gel, you can’t just take off. It’s just so liquid that you add on your nails like normal, but, it stays on long, prevents you from biting your nails, and makes them grow longer.
This is irritating, as someone who is going through aesthetics school right now. A properly trained nail technician knows the dangers of infections and filing too much. As long as you go to someone with a great reputation, with good credentials, you will be safe. We take more safety precautions, especially when it comes to sterilization than your average hospital.
Um, are y'all real doctors? Does Strayer have a 2 year online doctorate program? Because if they do, I'm signing up. Even if they do teach you that fingernails have lungs. I'm just trying to get on TV. Like these fine "doctors" right here.
do you not understand common terms, metaphors and laymen everyday slangs? when we say let your nails breathe in english , we mean give them a break from harsh layers of gel and arcrylic so our nails dont break down , omg some people do not have common sense
Natali3 I bet you don't even know what a millennial is. Just to let you know people who are 17 and under are not millennials. So I gave you one hint there, but how far does the age go before it actually gets out of the millennial range.
There actually are a lot of people who believe that nails need oxygen to be healthy. I've been told so many times by people that I need to take time away from polish because my nails need the air to get at them. They weren't talking about nails breaking down from harsh chemicals or too much file usage. They literally meant the nails needed air. Even when I inform that nails are made of dead cells, they still believe they need oxygen. There are even some nail techs that say nails need oxygen and some polish companies that claim their products allow oxygen to reach the nail for optimum health. It's all baloney.
You're supposed to disinfect the nail too I don't think these people know anything about manicures you don't want anything off you need to buff the shine off the nails. If you're getting your nails done properly you can keep them on for years with no damage.
I have had acrylics on and off for 25 years. Always hand filed. Never had a problem until I had a new tech use a drill. I had a disgusting thickness under all 10 nails and separation of nails too !! Thought I had fungus at 1st, but nope trauma to my nail beds. It's been 9 mos and my nails are almost grown out and I can polish them. Yes, I saw a dermatologist. No drills ! My natural nail was not drilled. She used it to remove the gel Polish.
I only had my nails done once , and it was acrilyc . The smell and powder made me sick . If I have they ever done again , I'd choose gel . Far less toxic smell, less powder...
I think there is something to the nails being able to breathe when hospitals prefer patients to not have on nail polish so that the oxygen sensor they clip on any of the fingers can accurately monitor the O2 level in the blood through the finger and finger nail. Makes sense through observation and personal experience.
Ok first of I'm a nail technician and I have clients that have beautiful healthy nails long and strong some don't because you have to go to a grade A place no chop shops a professional like myself file the natural nail is a must to adhere the acrylic/gel but it's doesn't ruin your nail bed at all the only way that can happen is if you file your nail everyday and and once you get your gel are acrylic it last about tree are four weeks before filling and that's it acrylic and gel nails can make anyone have beautiful long nailz in two months if done right so before you go to a nail salon ask about what products they use and what to expect if they have no problem telling you then that's the place to go but if they cant tell you that's a big no no right there because some acrylic liquid has mma it's acrylic dentist use to fill in teeth and on the nail it kill the nail hurts and it's sticky when you soak it in acetone but real acrylic is flaky and comes of early
the shebagabow family shebagabow actually people who use E files on the natural nail actually damage it because it takes off too many layers which is why e files are for after the acrylic or gel has been applied never for the actual nail hand files only for thd natural nail and any fully qualified professional nail tech knows that
I'm curious as to why the woman didn't do her research about organic gel before this segment....I mean, she knew they were going to do a story about "safer options".
nobody goes to the salon every week. they're literally just saying about what terrible nail techs do. when will girly girls get a break. is everything we do stupid?
What stupidity.. Its about using quality product and a trained nail technitian.. And not ebay non certified few-dollar lamps, gels and shit that is where the danger lies.. They are putting a stigma on the nail industry and not on bad uncertified products and bad nail workers... Those damages ONLY happen with shit material and shit technitian.. They should be educating people to ask the technitian what product will be used, when you go to any beauty treatment (botox, lashes, dermal, makeup..) u can ask that.
i used to get acrylic nails done every 2 weeks (refills) for about 3 years straight and now i no longer get acrylics. acrylics have permanently damaged the integrity of my nails. i have nails that will no longer grow straight along the free edge. they now partially curve around my finger tip. no matter how much i trim my nails they continue to grow a little bent. my nails are very fragile. they break super easily. and there is a single furrow going horizontally on my nail that grows out but usually comes back towards my cuticle bed looking almost like the growth of a newer, thinner nail. and i haven't gotten my nails done in 7 months so my nails have completely grown out from the acrylics but i continue to see the damaging effects post acrylics. even though they look nice and are inexpensive, i will probably never get acrylics again.
This is nonsense! She doesn't know what she is talking about. "Gel" and "acrylic" are both acrylic. UV curing lights are safe and LEDs produce this exactly same light as conventional. Just two things that are wrong in this video . This is BS.
I always hated painting my nails and never risked the salons (Too time consuming for my life style, don’t have much free time). I discovered Essie Gel couture nail polish over a year ago and I paint my nails every 2-3 weeks and they’re healthy and long. They last for two weeks with no chipping if you cap the tip, they stay on after swimming (I swim three times a week). I’m an engineering student so I don’t have time to maintain my nails every week or so and don’t have time to remove real gel or acrylics. I can ignore my nails for a month and they’d be acceptable and shiny like a gel😍 wearing the shade PR stunt right now, 12 days and no chips 😌 in two days I’ll put the topcoat on again so it stays just as shiny and I’ll be good to go again. Spend the $15 CDN for the colour and get the top coat that goes with it, thank me later Editing to say I hate the original Essie line, my all time favourite nail polish that I will never switch from is the Essie gel couture. I don’t know where my life would be without this line. Other than this, OPI and Nicole by OPI last a week or a little over a week with a good topcoat. Not the MINIMUM 2 weeks I get with my gel coutures❤️❤️ I’d buy out the Essie gel couture rights and formula before I let them discontinue it
LED cures hotter than UV and is more suitable for Gel Polish Manicures. UV is the appropriate light for Traditional Hard Gel product... Speaking of that you want a product that is considered a low-heat to no-heat gel. If you don’t (and you put it in an LED) the heat spike can hurt the nail bed ... it’s just plain stupid to use that combination. But a High-quality nail tech knows what he or she is doing!
Nope!!it depends on the nailtech and the products shes using..!!gel manicures, you remove it everytime and sometimes most of the time,it makes the nail thin and fragile while acrylics,we prep the nails bacteria free before the application...!
Ask your stylist for sns powder. She'll know what it is and it looks really nice, last a long time with no chips or coloring coming off, and most importantly it's natural and better than gel and acrylic
how do you figure that acrylic is worse than gel acrylic Is nonporous and gel is porous that creates a breeding ground for bacteria also the chemicals that should always be applied before any nail service kill every thing that could be on the nail plate I am sorry that some nail techs do not follow manufacturers directions but you really hurt the good sanitary techs when you say ALL no not all if you want a good sanitary tech then you do not want to go to the chop shop ie:the nail place in the strip mall down the road!! we are here you just have to find us
If you go to a professional that won't happen your nails will be fine. Like Anna Barbara Welian said they aren't actually damaging your nails they are just lightly buffing and the only time they really file is when the acrylic is on and that does nothing to your nails.
These people have no knowledge of what nail techs do. Nothin she said was real or made any sense. She should have gotten more knowledge or talk to a nail professional before going on TV and giving fake information.
This woman is negative Nellie!!!! Is she a nail tech? If so, she would know that when you prep your nails for acrylic you also disinfect the area!!!! It depends on where you go!!!!! Some salons are not very professional and their techs are not even licensed. Do your research!!!!!! I've been doing acrylic nails for 33 years, way before even tips were available!!!!! We had to sculpt the entire nail. I loved doing it. Now days.......it's all about how many people they can get in and out!!!! No personal relationships are built. So sad:(
of course they want to show a picture of nails that are like the extreme image of neglect, to support their statement. this is b.s. as an aesthetician i have to saythis info is absolutely incorrect. when done correctly, acrylic or gel application depends on natural nail type/length/strength and preference. also, the quality and cleanliness of materials used. this is ridiculous.
That happens only if people do NOT take care of their nails. What I do I get my nails done by professional twice a month. Or once a month. Other than that I do them myself.
Apparently there are a lit of ditsy folks taking offense to the information given in the video.. and fyi.. breathe means to take a break from; not actually breathing in the literal sense. Smh..
Nail techs are taking offence because the info they are giving people is not correct I went to school and studied about nail had to pass my state board and I'll telling u this info is very false
This segment was full of false/bad info…With no professional there to give the other side of the story! Of course if you go cheap or go to a tech that does not practice the proper guidelines for this profession you could experience bad results. 🤷🏻♀️ Also, when a professional tells you how to care for your nails…listen! A lot of the problems you hear about are due to the person wearing the nails 💅🏻💅🏻!
Well those 2 fake blondes better let their hair breath or they're complete hypocrites. I'm a nail tech too and hair and nails are pretty much the same. They're not going around saying I have to let my hair breath. Lol.
I’ve never heard of anyone going to the nail salon every week, have you? I’ve heard of them coming back every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks sometimes even 4 weeks but never every week. If you use gel extensions, they hardly ever File your actual nails. If you do acrylic extensions, you can get fills until you feel like it’s time to put a new set of nails. I do both and my nails always last 3 to 3 1/2 weeks.
I’ve also gone to the nail salon consistently for my 3 1/2 to 4 week appointments. I only had two breaks out of the five years I’ve been going and my nails have been healthy.
This all has to do with prep. If they de hydrate the nail before application with acetone or alcohol, which essentially removing all bacteria, then you'll be fine. But the damage does not come from that. In fact, it all lies in removing the nail. If it is not removed properly, such as lifting one end and ripping it off, then that can cause long term damage. So the answer to question "Which is worse, acrylic or gel?" I say neither.
Ya'll nail technicians who think they're so amazing, she didn't literally mean breathe like we do, she means give them a break, you use the term breathe for things you need a break for, so let your nails breathe I.e. Give them a break from fake nails
Hannah McNeil both have a blue colour. Uv is a bulb and the lamp is usually big ( like the one in the video) LED are small light and the lamp is quite small
RosieVintage UV is a wavelength, LED is hardware. LED nail lamps use a more narrow UV wavelength, which means a faster dry time. Both are harmless and cause less UV exposure than walking from your house to you car parked out front.
How did they go through all the trouble to film this segment and NOT have a licensed nail technician on the panel with them?! Super irritating.
Agree, should of spent the time to see what nail techs are supposed to do how they’re trained if they’re doing it the proper way and that the client isn’t also RIPPING off their nails then saying “the product ruined my nails”
A nail technician is not a doctor, and this is their income source. Do you really think they would say anything negative about it?
Your nailtech is doing something wrong if you have to ga every week. It should last up to a month.
How would acrylics last a month they grow out and you have to get them filled
+Elizabeth Arana ikr
Unless your nails grow really really fast they still should last 3-4 weeks. All the nail techs I know do refills every 3-4 weeks depending on the growth. Never every two weeks.
+Alex S. I have to go every 2 weeks because of my nail growth. Where I'm from that's actually standard to go every other week.
+Elle Plow Plow exactly standard is every 2 weeks for a fill. I mean if you actually like you're nails to look good.
Honeeey! Why you dont like?
LOL
Sir don't lie...I can see your nail polish gleaming in the light. LOL! Love her!

Wow! The ignorance. The world is drowning in misinformation.
LadyNailz Your 100% right & it is misinformation & sadly the type of misinformation that affects nail techs like me & all the others here who are honest hygienic & loyal to their customers, such a shame to see the ignorance of adults
Exactly! I agree 100%
Nails do not BREATHE!! They don’t have lungs!! They are made of the same material as your hair. Does your hair need to breathe?!!! Gah!!
My Polished Life yes it needs air. this is why to much silikon and stuff like this damge you hair
It’s so hard not to laugh at people who say nails need to breathe
However, the other lady is wearing acrylics...🙄
Xitlali Sandoval it looks more like polish or gel
She’s actually wearing gel, she mentioned it in another video that she does gel and not acrylic
She wasn't bashing nails get over your insecurities.

what about these cell phones that we just can't seem to keep away from our faces.
ms bess ...whaaat's up with thaaat?! 😂😂😂
ms bess This is true !
True words☺️☺️☺️
Dee Bess that's why I use a headset... I have a cute pink receiver that plugs in my phone... I can rest my head on it like old school house phones 😀
Sadly they have no idea what they are talking about! This makes all Professional Manicurists mad.
The Nail Polisher exactly dear it’s such a foolish video
Im a nail tech and I don't sand down people nails like she says.
I just wish these "doctors" would've had a nail tech speak for them, this is all false information
What type of nails is she wearing?
Acrylic damage my nails and I only wore it once
As a nurse, I can see how having false nails can cause fungus to grow under the nail. But it will not grow due to false nails. The fungus and bacteria will thrive because of poor hygiene. I've had plenty of acrylic and gel nails put on over the years and i wait until my nail grows out before i put new nails on. Just the way I do things for myself. Not all nail techs are horrible. Just saying.
are you allowed to have fake nails? The hospital I work at has strict rules against fake, long or nail-polished nails. :/
IKR!? dont nurses have to have short nails without polish?
Yes. At my job we can have sport nails. And we just had our state inspection and state said we can have short nails.
Alisha Hernandez your not a nail tech!...your a nurse!
first off nails DO NOT have lungs so they can not breath.
Indiegirl007
If your nails are flaking off & hurt that bad u need to stop going to thst nail salon. Find a new 1 ASAP
I love getting my nails done because afterwards I can't stop showing off my hands
Yes talking with my hands. Doing the most🤣
None of them have a background in cosmetology or are professional nail technicians. They have points, but they're not experienced in that field so they really have no place to say which is worse especially when they probably can't even tell the difference even watching the application method.
They also seem to be really fantastic doctors. Calling UV lights bad and then wanting to "Let their nails get a little sunshine"
Miriam Wei Amen! That annoyed me.
We gets they nails done every week like bitch my full set cost 60+ I ain't balling like that
In my humble opinion. 💅🏽
what polishes do you recommend? please share
Yes please share the brands since you’re so sure. Help us women out please
Seche Vive is the top coat I use it’s in a blue bottle, and any non chip lasting nail polish. I’ve found the higher end nail polishes do better at not chipping.😉
Every week? Sheesh they don't know anything, it takes over a month for acrylics to come off...
I’ve been getting my nails done for the past 20 years..I have never had an infection. And my nail beds have never looked like the photos during this video. A bit thinner yes, but you give them a break for a few months to give it a chance to grow again, to breathe.
why would you need to let your nails breathe. They are not porous... they do not need to breathe!
Natasha Henderson skin around it is though which can move to your nail beds
Bonnie Groom say what?? Please explain.. the only skin on your nails are cuticles and you can't put acrylic on them anyway, they are pushed back
Natasha Henderson she didn't literally mean breathe like we do , she means give them a break, you use the term breathe for things you need a break for, so let your nails breathe I.e. Give them a break from fake nails
all the dimwit nail techs talking about "nails don't breathe" - the doctors don't meant that the nails ACTUALLY breath in and out oxygen. they just mean to let the nail go natural.
Natali3 that's under the nail not a part of it.
Ive been getting my nails done with acrylic for over 10 years. I never once had an issue. Dont let these people scare you!!!
Please do some research on the chemicals used during this process.
Toluene -
is a colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent odor.
Formaldehyde -
can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. High levels of exposure may cause some types of cancers
Dibutyl Phthalate -
causes hypertension, anemia and reduced hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell levels. Dibutyl phthalate triggers inhibited mitochondrial respiration, liver necrosis and peroxisome proliferation. Dibutyl phthalate raises the odds of reduced kidney weight and contact dermatitis
Methacrylate compounds -
this substance can cause serious eye damage.
Targeting nails salon y don’t they talk about mc Donald makes American fat 🐷🐷😌😌😌
It's like saying, I've been using sun beds for over 10 years IVE never had cancer...
I have been wearing acrylic nails for close to two years and have had not one little problem. **knock on wood**
I've been wearing them since I was a teen and it's been perfectly fine
Been wearing my acrylic for over twenty years. Nothing ever happened except for beautiful nails.
-the UV light is safe
-LED lights exist if you're that scared of putting your hands in a skin-safe light for 30secs when you sunbathe for hours on end lmao
As a certified nail technician this video thoroughly pisses me off. Do your research before running your mouth.
They are doctors. They've probably seen a lot of shit happening from acrylics and gels...
Mike And Kayla
I agree this shit made me so mad they have not a clue on what they are talking about
Kelsey Matthews But they aren't experienced in gel or acrylic application. They can only treat things when something bad happens. Same with nutrition. They aren't experienced in nutrition much either.
These people know nothing about nail art. If you go to a reputable nail tech you should have no problems with your natural nails. No nail tech who is worth their salt will not file off your nails.
SimderZ so true
Who wants to go on vacation with their nails not done?!? I specifically get my nails done for holidays
Exactly
How are they gonna come on this show and say they don’t know what organic gel is??? Like if you’re gonna mention it look it up
Oh give me a break. I know so many women who've been exposed for many years without any detriment to health. Once in a while let your nails breath. I started wearing acrylic with gel overlays on my nails after 10 years of having natural nails and my hands look wonderful! Ladies get your nails done and stay pretty.
Hi I am a nail tech and actually Acrylics because it covers your nail and holds them in that position and gel is not that bad but it peels and when it peels it takes a layer of your nails with it
The dip powder is the most healthiest nail type it has vitamins in them and helps them grow out and when you soak them off it does not damage your nails
This is so corny & so misinformed
This is crazy I've been getting acrylics for 11 years and this has never happened to me
no no no.... the info they have is all wrong. Nails don't need to breathe. The picture they showed is the aftermath of a chop shop's "acrylic".
A couple of girls at school that had acrylic nails half of their whole nail came off
that's awful
I know right 🙄
To everyone claiming that these doctors' opinions are invalid because nails don't "breathe": Just because cells undergo keratinzation does not mean gas and water cannot pass through these cells at a molecular level.
If acrylic AND gel is somewhat bad (in their own ways) imagine us girls who get GEL polish on our ACRYLIC nails 😳
Lol
Lol double problem
Our nails receive their oxygen from our bloodstream they don't breathe, however as a nail tech of 20yrs i've learned that its not a bad thing to give your nails a break here and there, acrylics can weaken the natural nail so a break can be refreshing xx
Getting your nails done is perfectly safe if the nail tech knows what they are doing. All the infections probably came from salons that weren't clean.
Nail techs make money off of acrylic and gel nails, of course they’re gonna say it’s safe 😂
Perfectly safe? Not quite....

it’s terrible of them to say this, I can guarantee few days later they found themselves in a nail salon too having a set of nails after sharing utter nonsense🤔

[]Xanalimarie[] you watch her??
Acrylic hurts to come off and makes your nails disgusting because of the glue. I’ve had it before. And on the other hand, gel, you can’t just take off. It’s just so liquid that you add on your nails like normal, but, it stays on long, prevents you from biting your nails, and makes them grow longer.
This ain’t stopping me from getting my nails done girl bye😂
Reading the comments makes me feel better :)
I'm not letting my acrylic go for anyone! And my nails grow just find underneath.
This is so rare Look at the audience getting all shook 🤣🤣🤣
"your sealing bacteria into your natural nail"😑 yeah lol its called washing your hands and disinfecting your nails before you get your mani
Nails do not breathe, are you serious?
Every week ? I stretch my gel mani to 3 weeks
I love my gel mani:))
Well I guess that means we can be doctors now since they know so much about nails
Natita your parents are probably millennials 🤦♀️ considering it’s anyone born in the early 80s- to the early 2000s
Now,they need to talk about the allergies that are now more common than not.
This is not going to stop me from getting my nails done unless I notice a mole which changes shape or color on my hand.😂😂😂
You're supposed to disinfect the nail too I don't think these people know anything about manicures you don't want anything off you need to buff the shine off the nails. If you're getting your nails done properly you can keep them on for years with no damage.
Anyone who says that nails need to breathe, loses my attention.
Well you are a nail technician after all. Nothing special anyway.
@@maya8617 lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I agree this is stupid and misinforming . where is the industry professional? these ladies don't know what the hell there talking about.
It’s so they can see if your nails are turning blue also
Clearly she knows nothing about doing nails. And clearly she's been going to chop shops her whole life.
Ok first of I'm a nail technician and I have clients that have beautiful healthy nails long and strong some don't because you have to go to a grade A place no chop shops a professional like myself file the natural nail is a must to adhere the acrylic/gel but it's doesn't ruin your nail bed at all the only way that can happen is if you file your nail everyday and and once you get your gel are acrylic it last about tree are four weeks before filling and that's it acrylic and gel nails can make anyone have beautiful long nailz in two months if done right so before you go to a nail salon ask about what products they use and what to expect if they have no problem telling you then that's the place to go but if they cant tell you that's a big no no right there because some acrylic liquid has mma it's acrylic dentist use to fill in teeth and on the nail it kill the nail hurts and it's sticky when you soak it in acetone but real acrylic is flaky and comes of early
the shebagabow family shebagabow actually people who use E files on the natural nail actually damage it because it takes off too many layers which is why e files are for after the acrylic or gel has been applied never for the actual nail hand files only for thd natural nail and any fully qualified professional nail tech knows that
Tip on making your nails stronger is using bio oil. I used it to get rid of a scar on my hand and the side effect was stronger nails to my surprise 😊
No gel or acrylic needed
I'm curious as to why the woman didn't do her research about organic gel before this segment....I mean, she knew they were going to do a story about "safer options".
I seriously hate pseudoscience.
Which part is pseudoscience??
nobody goes to the salon every week. they're literally just saying about what terrible nail techs do. when will girly girls get a break. is everything we do stupid?
This is BS.
The nail salon in my town sets their tools in alcohol for 10 minutes and and clean our hands with rubbing alcohol before doing anything
This is so stupid I swear. Half of these are not even true
Spend the $15 CDN for the colour and get the top coat that goes with it, thank me later
Editing to say I hate the original Essie line, my all time favourite nail polish that I will never switch from is the Essie gel couture. I don’t know where my life would be without this line. Other than this, OPI and Nicole by OPI last a week or a little over a week with a good topcoat. Not the MINIMUM 2 weeks I get with my gel coutures❤️❤️ I’d buy out the Essie gel couture rights and formula before I let them discontinue it
I thought the difference between an LED and UV lamp was the bulbs themselves and the wavelengths. Aren't they both still emitting uv?
Precisely! UV has a broader band of wavelengths so it sets slower than LED which uses a narrow UV wavelength.
She'll know what it is and it looks really nice, last a long time with no chips or coloring coming off, and most importantly it's natural and better than gel and acrylic
how do you figure that acrylic is worse than gel acrylic Is nonporous and gel is porous that creates a breeding ground for bacteria also the chemicals that should always be applied before any nail service kill every thing that could be on the nail plate I am sorry that some nail techs do not follow manufacturers directions but you really hurt the good sanitary techs when you say ALL no not all if you want a good sanitary tech then you do not want to go to the chop shop ie:the nail place in the strip mall down the road!! we are here you just have to find us
no one is getting a new set every single week, and the UV rays? really? your finger tips are literally in there for 30 seconds.
OMG! this changed my perspective a lot.
She should have gotten more knowledge or talk to a nail professional before going on TV and giving fake information.
i hate both. i long healthy natural nails that have not broken in 2 years. Before that i had acrylics and gel and it ruined my natural nail
Nails do NOT breath !! 😂😖
Smh..
MysTaria87 it’s incorrect information that’s probably why
Nail techs are taking offence because the info they are giving people is not correct I went to school and studied about nail had to pass my state board and I'll telling u this info is very false
This segment was full of false/bad info…With no professional there to give the other side of the story! Of course if you go cheap or go to a tech that does not practice the proper guidelines for this profession you could experience bad results. 🤷🏻♀️
Also, when a professional tells you how to care for your nails…listen!
A lot of the problems you hear about are due to the person wearing the nails 💅🏻💅🏻!
Nails are made from DEAD CELLS! The picture that they showed you are not from getting Gel or Acrylic nails. Get educated
Man this rarely happens. Gees it had a lot to do with more than just the acrylic
Well those 2 fake blondes better let their hair breath or they're complete hypocrites. I'm a nail tech too and hair and nails are pretty much the same. They're not going around saying I have to let my hair breath. Lol.
Kelly Zammit 😂😂😂👏
When commenters don't understand that "let your nails breathe" is a figure of speech....😩😩. English is very hard for some people. Sigh.😧
Right ! And all these nail techs in here want to be trusted lmao
This is why I do my nails myself. I know I’m clean. I disinfect my natural nails before applying my gel polish and use my led light.
My nails are bald and beautiful ;)
Good for you
Danielle Johnson mine too
This all has to do with prep.
This is so bogus!!
Ya'll nail technicians who think they're so amazing, she didn't literally mean breathe like we do, she means give them a break, you use the term breathe for things you need a break for, so let your nails breathe I.e. Give them a break from fake nails
How can you tell between a led lamp or a uv lamp? Especially in a salon? I don't want to annoy the nail techs by asking lol
I'm not a nail tech but I get my nails done regularly, I'm pretty sure uv lamps have a purple light and led are just normal lights
They both still Amit uv rays to cure the gel
Also if your nails get damaged after you took them off it's because you're not taking them off right if you bite it off it rips layers of.your nail
