I say the show with Jay and the Americans is Torrington, CT a couple of years ago! I was so disappointed because I thought that Jay Black was back with the group. Jay #3 is not even close to Jay Black. He was so bad that by the third song I walked out of the show. I am glad that I have seen the real Jay Black many times singing at the Mohegan Sun at least 3 or 4 times a year for over 12 years and nobody can ever replace him! Unfortunately, two years ago he did a show in the Arena and he lost his voice! It was very sad to see that happen because I knew what he was capable of doing! I guess I can say, I seen him sing his last song but he gave it all he could that day. Even Bowzer asked him to come off the stage but Jay would not stop the show. He stood there for almost 40 minutes and gave every last breath that he had to please the people. It was great to be able to see him sing for the last time! Not a way to end a career for a great person! Jay, you will always be the only ONE!!! Thank you for all you gave us! You
RIP : Jay Traynor (March 30 1943 - January 2 2014) was founder and lead singer of Jay & The Americans singing lead on thier first hit . He left the group in 1964 to go solo and was replaced in the Americans by David Blatt who agreed to perform under the stage name Jay Black
Absolutely right! I saw the original Jay Black and the Americans in 1965 when the first got hot. They were fantastic and Jay's voice was out of this world! Handsome as hell to boot!
Jay Black is, and always will be, the only "JAY"... You can BUY the name, & do any impersonation you want, with some of the original BACKUP vocalists... and have a nice cover band.
@Suziq1231 All three Jays are still alive and performing, in different groups. Jay Black is the Jay who was there when JATA made most of the hits. His is the most distinctive voice of the three. Jay Traynor had their first big hit with "She Cried". Then he left the group and Jay Black joined them. Jay Black uses the name "Jay Black". On February 4, he performed in a concert in Fla. and sang his signature "Cara Mia", complete with the difficult high note as when he was young. Great voice still!
If Jay Black is not leading this group it is all smoke and mirrors. The major success of Jay and the Americans came with the fantastic voice of Jay Black. This fellow is a pretender living on someone elses hard work.
@rocmaven Listening to the songs, I can't pick out a single one of the backup voices, they all blend as backups should. It wouldn't matter who was singing backup if they could harmonize. But there is no mistaking the lead singer. It's either Jay Black or it's not the voice we all associated with JATA when they were making hits. By comparison, the newest group sounds weak, especially the lead singer. Jay Black is in his 70s now and still sounds like he did when he sang "Cara Mia" and had a hit.
@Suziq1231 The REAL Jay, Jay Black (David Blatt) is alive and well and still performing. A cover group has been formed using the name Jay & the Americans which became available for purchase due to legal issues. Performing under the name does not make them Jay & the Americans. Also, having a few of the original members (NOT lead singers) does not make them Jay & the Americans. Look for Jay Black in concert if you want to hear "The Voice".
The greatest Jay of this group was Jay Black! Sandy, Howie and Marty would be nothing if it weren't for him. No one can ever take his place, and those guys are totally disrespectful to him during interviews. They barely acknowledge his impact and even called this new phony hack "our favorite Jay" onstage. Yeah, this new guy didn't make you what you are or earn all that money for you back in the 60s and 70s, did he? The whole "new" group is a bunch of ungrateful chumps.
The Jay in this group is a phoney. He is no Jay Black the original Jay of Jay and the Americans. I hate it when these groups try to pass these people off as original. There will never be another Jay Black. Sorry Guys, your ok as impersonator act.
@Caramia112 You are so right! I like Jay Black, and he can sing lead with any group of backups and make it fly. Better than ever? Not so, can't match Jay Black.
What can you say about Jay and the Americans all Jays contributed their immense talent and contributed to the sucess of the group. Thank you for the music guys.
That’s about like saying “thanks to all the defensive linemen for helping the QB have a record setting season”. These guys used the legal system to buy a name, then have the audacity to sell themselves as “the originals”. The QB here is not that record setter.
Love Jay and the Americans and always listen to their songs but to me growing up Jay Black is the only lead singer of this group and always will be even thou the other guy is very good for me it is Jay Black and I mean that with no disrespect to the new guy. RIP Jay Black and thank you for all the great songs you sung along with the members of the group, a perfect mix of talented young men, the music lives on. ❤👍👍👍👍👍
Obviously you were not around in the 60's when Jay black ( the real Jay) was the lead singer and selling all the millions of records, hit after hit that he made. Please do not accept imitations. I am 65 years old and remember them well. Only believe half of what you see and nothing that you hear.
@ILIGANO So TRUE!!! I don't care WHAT they call themselves.... without the REAL Jay Black they're a COVER Band ... a Jay Black C-O-V-E-R Band!! The same way that "Journey" is nothing more than STEVE PERRY COVER Band... granted the kid they have (from the Philippines ) Arnel is Awesome but they C-O-V-E-R Steve Perry. If they want to be their own brand get their own SOUND.
Nice rock'n'roll band with this great tenor! I'm a rock'n'jazz singer and i admire these guys a lot. Cara mia it's an icon not only for opera, but for pop music of the sixties. Keep on rollin' boys Best regards from portugal, from THE LUCKY DUCKIES nostalgic band Marco Antonio
They may have 3 original memebers in the group, but they don't have Jay Black or Kenny Vance who were in the group when they made all their top hits and songs back in the 60's. Do me a favor . get a life!
@Gunsnhozes For the record, they are not even the original "Americans" which were Kenny Vance, and Howie Kane (a.k.a. Howie Kirshenbaum. I grew up with these guys and hung out with Howie and Kenny on Kings Highway in front of Dubrow's cafeteria where we hung out to meet girls in Brooklyn. And I agree, without Jay Black, a.k.a. David Blatt who replaced John Traynor after only 1 hit, who the hell cares about some back up singers and a fake Jay. Traynor left and had 1 hit as the Walker Brothers.
@EdgeCrush1075 The original Jay & the Americans were already famous when David Blatt joined them. They had a huge hit with the original Jay, John "Jay" Traynor called "She Cried", which was a Top 5 smash in 1962.
@SkidRowJosephine With all due respect to the new, or third, Jay, he can never sing like Jay Black. He doesn't have the power or fullness Jay Black has. What's more, Jay Black is 20 years older than #3. Wait around and see how the new guy sounds in 20 years. Jay can still reach and hold the note. In fact, he just held it for an incredible time at a concert in Florida, this past weekend. Jay also has more personality, is simply more entertaining. Give it up, skids.
@rakeuiff I know the history already, everybody. And I know his real name. Evidently, some of you don't. Is is "David", or "Dennis" ? The group's fame was with Jay Black, that's all. Just like John, Paul, George & Richard Starkey.
You can keep trying, but you'll never be Jay. I don't mind the band getting back togethet as much as I mind the lack of humbleness shown here. It's the I'll show him mentality that makes you guys sound like dishruntlef kids.
hey guess what journey is on tour with most of their original members and a ..soundalike singer.. but they are not journey.and also i do know what i am talking about i used to work in the industtry and worked with..drum roll..jay and the americans..with both jays(traynor in another project) but jay traynoer at least had his hit she cried which the other jay (black) acknowledges in his shows that he did not make it a hit.period...
sounds like a cat wailing on the high notes and definately not enough strengh being put out on the high notes, there are wannabees in this world BUT JAY BLACK WAS THE BEST [ good try tho ]
@spacepatrolman Jay Traynor was the original Jay of Jay and the Americans. Jay Black ( real name David Blatt ) took over the group after the first hit with Jay Traynor "She Cried". When Jay Traynor left the Americans he replaced one of the three Walker Brothers who had a limited hit in America with a song called "The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore" which was much bigger in England.
RIP Jay Trainor. It is a travesty that in this country you can buy a singing group. Well you can buy a world series and a super bowl too with enough money. Wake up without Kenny Vance It is no "Americans" Maybe I want to buy Gary Lewis and The Playboys without Gary Lewis?
@Gunsnhozes Jay Black was NOT in the original Jay & the Americans. The original Jay was Jay Traynor, Jay coming from his first initial, for John. When he left, David Blatt replaced him, and only then became Jay.
@lindaveee Umm... really ? Waay back when I was just a pimply-faced kid, Jay Black was THE Jay. Soo, how are these guys "the real deal" ? maybe the "Americans"... but not "Jay" .
@rocmaven So what your telling me is that the Original Jay Black from Jay Black and the Americans no longer sings with the Americans so they got a new lead singer? Without Jay Black there might as well be no group like all the groups going around imitating groups without the original members. If that's what you like enjoy them Not me! Thanks for the insight. I'd rather see Jay Black Solo.
I think its more like perserving the sound and integraty, of possibly the best band , with the best constant sound their is. Their are so many groups who lose their greatness or founding sound, and get turned around by their own hype, and drugs and such. This is not a flame to your post, it is just my take on it. This is great music to always come back to and just enjoy. Imitation is not a bad thing at all. Its the sound, its calmness in a storm of truly horrable music that is comming out now.
I'm confused. The guy wants to put the Americans back as a group but doesn't get the Jay's (Traynor or "Black" ) nor does he get Kenny Vance. So real Americans, who are currently performing on there own, are not in this new group because a "name" has been purchased again by someone else.
@SkidRowJosephine I think you have just reached the end of your vocabulary! I would like to know why you hate Jay Black so much. You apparently know him personally, as no one would be so vehement toward the mere postings of a popular entertainer's performances.
It’s wrong that this This group is calling themselves the original Jay and the Americans, while their voices are very good this is not the original Jay and the Americans.
@VishnuMa Yes, the name Jay & the Americans was bought under unfortunate circumstances and a run of the mill singer got together with several ex "real" members (not either Jay or Kenny Vance) and are calling themselves Jay & the Americans and fooling the public. I guess if I was able to buy the name "Beyonce" or "Madonna" for instance, I could go out and sing too! This is a joke played on the public.
I don't care about the 3 original members, I am talking lead singer. Yes, Traynor was the original.Go back into the 60's videos,Jay Black had a great singing voice, much better than this guy.Jay Blacks Jay and the Americans had many #1 hits, he couldn't have been that bad. Why do they get someone that tries to imitate Jays Blacks voice? I just don't buy this replacement. Look at the original Jay Black Video when he was young. God knows what this guy will be like when he is Jay Blacks age.
but they still are a cover band without the real singer they should have gotten jay black/jay traynor..remember these guys werent here for the hits(at least not all of them) so its still like karaoke show with a good singer the guys good but still not the original i have a friend who impersonates elvis and sang with the jordanaires but its still a tribute act no matter how you sell it!!!!
Not the original singer of these songs...this gut probably wishes he could be an Elivs impersonator instead of a Jay Black impersonator,,,,the may here says it all..."if you could sound like Jay Black" ... boy I wish I could sound like Jay Black, who by the way sounds better than me a 70 than I do at 65....don't try to kid me on the real deal , it doesn't work with us original doo wop peopel who were there and bought these original sounds and saw their concerts,,,,nuff said....

Well, OK, but I don't know if I would PAY to see them. Wasn't Marty just a guitar player and why did all the Hebrews change their names? Look, many add-ons and background singers in groups keep the sound alive like Stills of the Dubs because all the key members of the groups are DEAD. The major players of the Americans are all ALIVE. Get them all back and then you will really have something!
Sorry. Not bad, but definitely NOT Jay Black. I'd rather hear Jay Black and some other background singers than the original background singers and a faux Jay.
Essentially a well-intentioned cover group. Third Jay good but not even close to Jay/David. No Kenny, No JAY. I would ratherhave seen the real four (with guest by Jay T.) do a PBS special ala roy's that would live forever, Again, well-intended and I understand egos, different paths, but keep it honest. This is a less than good solution. Waited too long to do it right, guys. Sounds good but.....especially calling it 'original',
BULLSHIT!! If what he said is true and he wanted to protect the group and the name....Why didn't they ask the original Jay Black to rejoin the group? As long as Jay Black wa not an owner the courts would have been satisfied and the original group could continue.
I say the show with Jay and the Americans is Torrington, CT a couple of years ago! I was so disappointed because I thought that Jay Black was back with the group. They can have all the bookings in the world, but I see Jay Black on PBS Doo Wop...that tells the whole story.
Nobody did it better than Jay Black or David Blatt or whatever his name was!

There's only One Jay Black, my friend from Brooklyn
Jay Black was the best.
Americans without Jay Black is like the three tenors without Pavarotti.
Yes!!!!!!
Absolutely right! I saw the original Jay Black and the Americans in 1965 when the first got hot. They were fantastic and Jay's voice was out of this world! Handsome as hell to boot!
@e M Your comment makes no sense whatsoever! What are you on?!
@e M You're wrong. By 1965 Jay Black was with the Americans. Traynor left in '64.

Sounds like a karaoke version. Jay black will never be replaced. Like the 4 seasons trying to replace fanki valli
@beepersii beepers, I totally agree with you, Jay Black is one of a kind. That JATA was as good as it gets, no need for anyone to even imitate him.
Jay and the Americans soo great Jay was the best ever

close but no cigar...Jay Black could sing circles around the new guy

They stabbed Jay Black in the back. Why settle for a guy trying to sound like Jay Black, they should have asked Jay Black to come back....pitifull....

Great Job!! Jay would have to be proud! For sure....
What a load of crap! Proud of what? A big hack singing his songs badly? Get real, jackass!
This is not Jay amd the Americans
I'm confused. The guy wants to put the Americans back as a group but doesn't get the Jay's (Traynor or "Black" ) nor does he get Kenny Vance. So real Americans, who are currently performing on there own, are not in this new group because a "name" has been purchased again by someone else.
Okay so now that this video confused my believe in what the daylight and nightlight (haaa), what was that again - who did what and who to whom....?
@SkidRowJosephine I think you have just reached the end of your vocabulary! I would like to know why you hate Jay Black so much. You apparently know him personally, as no one would be so vehement toward the mere postings of a popular entertainer's performances.
Imitator or imposter - either word works, but he'll never be as good as Jay Black! Never!
Never heard the first line of Cara Mia sung so blah
I'm impressed, keepn it alive! Peter K
eeehhh a cover band!!!! without jay black your a nice cover band only!!!
It’s wrong that this This group is calling themselves the original Jay and the Americans, while their voices are very good this is not the original Jay and the Americans.
Why did Jay black leave the group
@VishnuMa Yes, the name Jay & the Americans was bought under unfortunate circumstances and a run of the mill singer got together with several ex "real" members (not either Jay or Kenny Vance) and are calling themselves Jay & the Americans and fooling the public. I guess if I was able to buy the name "Beyonce" or "Madonna" for instance, I could go out and sing too! This is a joke played on the public.
Jay Black is the real thing..sorry you rip offs.......
@uncadiane EXACTLY! You said it purrfectly !
@rocmaven First of all that is not Jay Black and this is just a copycat group. Check out the real Jay Black and the Americans on another post.
Faked me out. Very similar.
I don't care about the 3 original members, I am talking lead singer. @rocmaven To each his own I guess- Enjoy your phoneys
Sandy kenny martry and howie guifar was .played by marty

i heard he passed am i wrong??? i hope so
For what buying the name in bankruptcy court to protect the integrity of it. Get a life
Jackass!
To buy the name to protect the integrity is one thing. To put out this cheesy video and defraud the public by presenting misleading info is quite another.
You wanted to take advantage of a situation and sell yourselves as what we heard on the radio back in the 60’s.
That’s fraud by any definition.
the original America were sandy Jenny ,aryu an
Well, OK, but I don't know if I would PAY to see them. Wasn't Marty just a guitar player and why did all the Hebrews change their names? yeas but with other bands they are opening act!!!so get your facts straight..
Fraud. Jay Black IS the ONLY Jay. Sorry.
Sorry. Not bad, but definitely NOT Jay Black. I'd rather hear Jay Black and some other background singers than the original background singers and a faux Jay.
This is not the original group with Jay Black, give me a break.
not Jay Black
Essentially a well-intentioned cover group. Third Jay good but not even close to Jay/David. No Kenny, No JAY. totally FAKE
Just a "not so good" cover band not even close. No heart, no soul, no feeling, just blah. Never waist your money on this
