I was born 1960 but as a teenager in the mid to late 1970's l didn't like the music of the Era. I loved the music of the 1950's and 1960's and yes l loved listening to Jay Black and the Americans. Great singer even in his older years. Jay Black will be missed as so many of that Era. Great harmony singers and those groups can't be beat. Keep em playing. Thanks Jay for all the memories, you'll truly be missed!
No auto tune,no way to erase because of a flaw in the recording just pure talent that will always be part of our lives !! So glad I’m a 50’s baby I love almost all music but the 50’s and 60’s and 70’s will be the soundtrack of my youth !!
Is it any wonder why he was known as "the voice" Thanks for the Music 🎶 and thank you TJ for saving all of it for us and all the PBS Doo Wop programs music that will never pass our way again !
Jay was one of a kind. They performed for a group of future secretaries. I was part of the future secretaries. I was mere feet away from the stage and Jay. I treasure the memories of that night. What a talent. Jay, you are now part of God's choir. Thanks for all the beautiful music. RIP
Jay is so very special to those of us who loved '60s music. How he and the similarly great Johnny Maestro are not recognized by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame tells you what a sham it is.
Its al a matter of personal taste but IMO, the greatest pure voice in that era was the incomparable Roy Orbison. He had a an immense vocal range coupled with great vibrato and resonance. I saw him LIVE twice in the early 70's. His voice gave me chills.
Always loved his voice. Seems as he sang at this concert and his voice got even better as it went on...I feel that he started feeling more and more comfortable with himself...background singers were great and you can see the orchestra was so into it..they were smiling as they played....Love this. 🙏 JAY
A ton of personality along with The Voice. Sad to read and just now of David's passing. His enduring voice through the years always gave me hope that my existence would endure. Well....oh well. Love you Jay for the pleasure you've added to my life and so glad I got to see you perform when you were 61and for sharing your gift for so long.
Thankyou Jay, you did get me through a lot of bad times, God bless you and your family ,I know heaven is sure happy now. I pray I will get to see you some day. Thank you dear, sweet, kind, beautiful man RIP
I Just Love The Songs From Jay And The Americans... I Perform Myself In The UK 🇬🇧 Wish I Had His Backing Group There, Sounding Fantastic.. These Tunes Still Go Down Well In Britain.. RIP Jay
Terrific memorial. As a baby-boomer I can’t fully express the memories and sense of loss that must be felt by many of my contemporaries.as well as myself. Thank you.
How right you are Bob. I too am a baby boomer and all of us felt a profound loss with Jay Black’s sad passing! He was so dearly loved & will live forever in all of our hearts!! 🎼🎶🎵🎼🎶🎵🎼🎶🎵🎼🎶🎵🎼🎶
I always loved "Cara mia" and his other hits. Seeing vids of him singing when he's much older and that voice is still as powerful as ever.....wow! What a talent! Definitely NOT a studio creation! RIP, Jay. A heavenly voice returns to heaven...
Love your preservation and appreciation of yesterday’s music , TJ !!!! I see your specials on PBS quite a bit thank you thank you so much and thank you for this highlight of Jay Black ; I have always thought that he was just the living end of all wonderful singing and music techniques as well as his humorous personality. !!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Rest in peace , Jay Black !!!🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎶♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶
Most singers cannot maintain their singing voice...or hit those high notes when they age as Jay manage to do. His body may had aged, but that wonderful singing voice he had stayed young to the end of his time. His singing voice was a blessing to us all. RIP Jay.
Love Jay Black and the Americans, so many great songs and Jay Blacks voice was amazing. Jay, thank you for leaving us so many great songs to listen to, till it is our time to join you. RIP❤
Rest in Peace Jay. Thank you for sharing your gifted musical talent with us for so many years. I saw you many times here in Connecticut. Not only did we enjoy your music but we also enjoyed hearing your many funny comments during the show.
I got my first transistor radio in 1967 at age 9 and "Cara Mia" was the first song I heard on AM radio--WOW! Through the years, I've learned to appreciate most kinds of music, but every time I hear "Cara Mia" it takes me back. Thanks for turning me on to cool music, Jay!
Every song he performed was special. There was no voice like his. I could listen to him over and over. I am so sad to hear that he had passed--he will be missed.
I met jay Black (David Blatt), backstage at a concert in Philadelphia. Very nice person and a gentleman. I've always appreciated Jays voice through the years and it was a privilege to meet him. In this video, he is probably about in his late 70s. It does show in his voice. I'm 81 and I don't sing as I used to either. 😁 He is missed.
An amazing performer and incredible voice that would have been lost to younger generations had it not been for your “Doo Wop” revival and presentation Mr. Lubinsky.
So sad that Jay Black is gone may he rest in peace. My head will always hear his beautiful voice. A voice I grew up with. He was a wonderful man besides a great singer.
What a very nice Tribute to this wonderful singer. Ok, so now and then you can spot some wear and tear in his voice during this performance, but he still nailed it. Great backing singers, nice venue. Wish I'd been there.
This brings back so many good memories of a summer of romance I had listening to Jay and the Americans. Time flies! I never forgot that guy and that summer, lol!
Beautiful piece of work TJ, as always. The Americans (with Jay) were one of America's finest groups, Kenny, Sandy, Howie and Marty. I remember them well as a boy.
I really enjoyed the Jay Black interviews. Always great to hear background info on tunes I've loved thru the years. The bonus tracks and Jay Traynor performance were a nice bonus. Thanks!
Thank you for posting this great tribute to Jay Black of Jay & The Americans. While you can see by my computer nickname I am a big Beatles fan, but I was also a fan of Jay and The Americans and one of my favourite tunes by Jay was Cara Mia. That man had a set of pipes that could deliver on that tune and make it sound so special. R.I.P. Jay... Your music will live on in music enthusiasts the world over.
I was friends with Jay from 19/88 1996 that’s what I told him Magic moment was number one in Vietnam January 2, 1969 to April 1, 1960 9 million radios over there he was flabbergasted
Hello Jay - though you’re not with us anymore, I think I would have liked very much to have known you. I’ve been watching some of your many live performances now available on the ‘tube’ and in this one (at 20:40) you talked about how important it was to you that your singing had made someone’s life a little better in some way (many someones in your case). Oh boy; that was wonderful! Like you, for over 60 years I have been told so often about my ‘wonderful’ voice (though mine was never nearly as fine as yours) and my reaction (with no disrespect intended) has become exactly as yours: “nice, thanks”. It just isn’t as important as it seemed when we were 25. But once in a while someone with tears running down her face will say something like “your rendition of ‘Danny Boy’ reminded me so much of my child who was recently deployed in Afghanistan - thank you so much” - that’s what makes the gift of a better than average voice a true blessing.
Sad that so any of the great Rock 'n Roll singers/entertainers of our youth are passing on! It must have been how our parents felt when the Big Band era faded away and those great vocalists passed.
Jay sounds fantastic! What sets this show apart though, is that they faithfully recreated the original instrumentation and arrangements. I would love to know who wrote the charts... They really listened deep into the original recordings and put in all the details. It had to be a labor of love!
Wow. I always wondered if there was more music in the concert than was broadcast. Jay’s voice was magnificent. He touched me with Walking In The Rain. I searched for a long time, then found it on a best of collection. May he rest in peace.
Wow What superb Arrangements Like the Original Studio Charts The musicians are Awesome & The Background Vocalists are Stupendous Wish Someone would Post the names of the background singers Great Stuf w The Singer we Admire so much
I recognize 2 of the backup singers-the 2nd and 4th are the Brigham brothers-Brian and Brandon---after this they joined up with 2 other singers and performed as the 4Seasons backing up Frankie Valli for 15 years from 2003-2018---they are now on their own performing as The Modern Gentlemen---they have appeared on a couple of TJ Lubinsky's recent PBS shows
TJ, Thank you for sharing this. Would have loved to meet Jay and see them live. Something about their music and Jay's down to earth personality makes me feel good every time :)
Rest in Peace your music will live on forever.
Amen. Thank you for all your music has given us. Much love, Jay.
his musicians and background singers deserve accolades....beautifu music.

Jay Black had great voice range. Favorite song is Cara Mia.
May his memory be continued to be remembered for a blessing.
It's impossible to stop admiring what this man could do with that incredible voice. Can't tell you or thank you enough for sharing.

And Johnny Rivers! All three should be a no brainer!
I agree 100 percent

The most powerful voice in the greatest era of rock & roll. Irreplaceable!!!
True. Frankie Valli and Gary Puckett, also. Roy Orbison.
How true!!! Jay Black’s voice & his charismatic personality were both absolutely extraordinary!!! I so agree with you Ken!

They didn’t call him “The Voice”. for nothing! What a performer!!!
He was still SO GOOD!
The back up guys are the Alley Cats from Orange County CA and we’re proud of them.
Sad that so any of the great Rock 'n Roll singers/entertainers of our youth are passing on! It must have been how our parents felt when the Big Band era faded away and those great vocalists passed.
i used to listen to Jay black on wmca in 1965
