That's one thing I do realize watching all these interviews is that that these are just standard people who would hold the door at McDonald's, I would highly recommend watching the Stapleton 42 Channel really brings personality to light. I have watched most of these people my entire growing up I now realize they were probably struggling as hard as my family was although they had an extraordinary job.

Underrated? To what degree? He maybe could've been a 10-20 driver on a consistent basis in his prime, maybe steal a win or hit a setup and snag a handful of wins in Cup. He wasn't underrated in Cup by any means. Spencer in the lower tier & local tracks? Yeah, he was absolutely under appreciated.

Jimmy was the guy you see here but young and full of piss and vinegar. Nascar use to interview everyone after and before a race. Hearing the emotions of the guys finishing 10th 15th or worse just showed the passion that everyone had. Because these guys were self made risk takers. Most of them were broke just getting too the Cup Series because it meant that much to them to win at this level. That's why everyone pushed the rules package to get an edge or bump someone out of the way for a win. Or not bump someone because you know that their not going to be able to pay their mortgage if you wreck them. Nascar was the wild, wild west back then.

Jimmy Fennig was a miracle man as a crew chief. He could perform miracles with an underfunded team. I remember when he was chiefing the Bobby Allison team with Derricke Cope and the Mane & Tale sponsorship, and he had them as a top ten team and almost winning a few races when you could tell they had no money. The Alison team went under shortly after that. Then he went to Roush, where he did have money, and led Mark Martin to his best seasons. But Fennig never had the big public image like other crew chiefs like Andy Petree or Shelmerdine or Evernham or Knauss, and he was rarely talked about, but if you were paying attention you saw he was always having success. If the NASCAR Hall of Fame is legit, Fennig should be in it. One of my NASCAR favorites.
I always thought of Spencer as a 300 mile driver. He'd be great for 3/4 of the race, then something would always happen. That's why he had better results in the Busch series (and in his modified career), in shorter races, than he had in cup. I don't know if it was because he was a fat guy who wasn't in good enough shape to last in the days when most races were 500 miles.

He didn't ever run real well, got a couple wins but never contended for titles and never got a top ten much but if he ever got in a wreck or did anything to warrant an interview, he was entertaining ("Mr. Excitement"). @Tuco67 Marlin did not turn him into the wall. Earnhardt came down on Marlin and turned himself into the wall.

I'm sure Sterling would have desire to do it. I don't blame him. The way he was treated by NASCAR "fans" was reprehensible. It really showed the dark side of NASCAR. There are still idiots out there who can't see that Earnhardt came down into Marlin. It's clear as day on the replay. Marlin is smart enough to avoid this sideshow..

I got to meet jimmy at altamont raceway in tracy ca. Truly a gentleman with a helluva sense of humor. This was back in 2000-2001, we had a great laugh about the day he gave ol kurt a attitude adjustment. That same note also had Greg biffle, stering marlin and Matt Kenneth. They were all great people. They drew 4 cars from our weekly late models and had 2 exhibition races, but they helped all of the teams with advice and just hung out in the pits with us all nite. I was a crew member on both a super stock and late model teams. There were a bunch of nascar people there that nite as it was a Sears Point (sonoma) weekend. Wish our boys could run against them though, but I guess they couldn't risk getting hurt on a sat nite with race day on sun, but we had a few drivers that would of given those guys a run for there money. Thanks for all the fun times jimmy, hey dont you go race in Tony's srx, you and Tony could go back and forth, you both have the the same " dont f#%^ with me attitude", plus it's just cool seeing the OGs going at, I'm sure that they would make a spot for ya go do it man

You can love him, or you can hate him, but I was fortunate enough to grow up watching NASCAR Modifieds at Shangri-La, Chemung, and occasionally Spencer Speedway - and Jimmy was a hell of a driver. I miss those old days on Saturday night when I got to watch Richie Evans, Jerry Cook, George Kent, Jimmy Spencer, Geoff and Brett Bodine, Maynard Troyer, etc. Fantastic memories from the original Shangri-La.

This is a great place to tell my story. I was a guest of Siemens at Bristol, their Busch driver was Scott Wimmer. Spencer was driving the orange yellow freight car. Saturday night Spencer defeated Wimmer by half a car length. Sunday before thr cup race we had a Q&A with Wimmer, somebody asked "Why didn't you just knock Jimmy out of the way"? Wimmer gave some non answer platitude. I think Spencer had him beat before the race ever started.
