Robert Pressley Describes His Intense Rivalry With His Dad

  • Robert's father Bob Pressley was a legend of the Carolina Short Track scene and his son followed right in his footsteps. And let's just say, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. They were both cut from the cloth of self-made grizzled short trackers that didn't back down from anyone... including each other. Bob Pressley's rivals turned into Roberts and then with the one bump to the back bumper, father and son became the rivalry. Just how intense did it get? Robert gives us the details inside a family feud that helped define their relationship and ultimately bring them closer together.

I remember when Robert was driving for the Jasper Engines team (#77). I was working for JET at the time; I was a master machinist in the diesel department when Robert came through the plant on a tour. He stopped in my area (align bore) and ask what I was doing. I told him I was align boring cam bearing in a 4-53 Detroit. He stood and watched me bore one side of the block, nodded his head then walked away. I always thought he was a good guy; Doug ( co-owner of JET) should have fired Ryan Pemberton (the crew chief) instead of Robert. A better engine program would have helped as well.

I too spent Friday evenings at the New Asheville Speedway watching Bob Pressley take on all comers. Jack Ingram, Bosco Lowe,…wish I could think of others but over fifty years is against my memory. I believe Bob Greenwood (?) owned the track. What a great place for short-track racing.

Yeah me too spent many years at the Asheville Speedway watching the Presley's and all the others going to greenville-pickens and then down to Hickory that's all we did was go watch racing those were the best years it was a shame to what they did to us at Asheville Speedway thanks to the Biltmore House hopefully all you wine drinkers are happy about that but I'm old enough now I've got over it

Jr is a sneaky good interviewer.
I think it’s because he and Mike are fans, just like us. They seem to ask the same questions I would ask.
Greenville-Pickens is my “home” track and it’s a type of racing unlike the Cup series and I think....much better.
One day I’ll tell you the story of meeting David Pearson and Bud Moore for lunch. I was in heaven.

When I was a kid, my dad would take us to watch races at Asheville Speedway.
There were legends like Jack Ingram, Bob Pressley, Tommy Houston, Sam Ard, Bosco Lowe and Ronnie Silver.
Dad owned a Thundetbird, so I was always for the Ford guy in that silver Ford Falcon.
It was an Appalachian Summer in the mid 1970s.
The vendors were hawking everything from burgers & dogs to tee shirts, Farrah Fawcett posters, funnel cakes and everything in between.
Olden in Pointer brand overalls spitting tobacco juice while gnats and moths beat each other against the lights like the competitors on the track.
Walking back to the car in the adjacent grass field which served as a parking lot, the fallen midnight dew wetting my shoes.
We'd climb in that Thunderbird for the ride home.
Dad would turn the key and that 429 inch motor would come to life, ready for the journey back to Madison County.
    Thanks for taking me back!

Robert always reminded of Buddy Baker, & the older he gets, the more he does! Totally a compliment, I assure you. What later fan's of Nascar don't really understand is, what Pearson said about only wanting to Win Races, not Championship's was the mentality of most top driver's before the 80's, it was certainly the mentality of Petty, Pearson, Allison & Cale, they just wanted to WIN RACES, & if they won the Chip at the seasons end....BONUS!
The Championship really wasn't that big of a deal, till the $$$ came along in the early 80's 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had a front row seat for the Tommy Ellis and Sonny Hutchinson feud in Virginia. My parents and I would go to Southside Speedway on Friday night's. Then Saturday night we rotate between South Boston, Langley, and Manassas to watch the late model sportsmen race. Sonny Hutchinson was the popular driver while Tommy Ellis was the challenger to the racing establishment. We were big Tommy Ellis fans. We followed the racing circuit weekly from 1976 to 1981 until I started to play High School Football. Great Times ! In the early 1980's Tommy Ellis would drive a Pressley car at South Boston the # 4 car where is would win multiple times with that Pressley car. According to this interview it was probably Bob Pressley's car ???
