Jimmy Spencer vs. Kurt Busch Explained

- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- "Mr. Excitement" Jimmy Spencer opens up to Dale Jr. and co-host Mike Davis about the big 2003 incident with fellow driver Kurt Busch that left Busch bloodied and Spencer suspended. We find out that even after 18-years, the feelings are still strong about what happened after the Michigan race.

The best part of this story the week Spence was at home. Kurt wrecked Sterling Marlin and he said, "Jimmy should have hit him harder." I have enjoyed these segments. Jimmy never fails to entertain.
AND Kurt's brother is just as much a jerk if not more of one.
@@joedogmckeel"Kryle" is worse in my opinion
@@joedogmckeel Kurt has massively improved. Perhaps back then, but nowadays he's fairly clean. Chip Ganassi cars seem to blow up pretty often and he usually is pretty calm about it. Back in 2011 it was all anger, but I think his rides at Phoenix Racing and Furniture Row changed him.
Kurt had to be one-upped by that woman.
@@joedogmckeel Jimmy in the podcast said he liked Kyle Busch, or "both Kyles" as he put it, Kyle Busch & Kyle Larson
This is the one time that the UA-cam version is so much better than the podcast. Watching the reactions of Jimmy tells the story or at least adds the color to it. Best one yet. First time too that Mike is part of the story with a lot of the facts. Great stuff!
I saw the broadcast version on NBC. They left so much out. Glad to see this.
Agreed. It was hard to listen to but seeing it it all makes sense
Oh he is still pissed off over it haha 😂

Jimmy came to our home track in eastern Canada to race. Broke early and spent the rest of the race interacting with the fans. He is very approachable.
In the Maritimes? Riverside or something
THAT IS AWESOME!! I MISS SEEING HIM ON TRACK! HE WAS A FIERCE COMPETITOR NO MATTER WHAT POSITION HE WAS IN!
Especially if you have his brand of beer in the cooler!!! lol
Rusty Wallace said it best, "One person ran their mouth and the other person punched him in it, sounds fair to me"!!!
all these years later.. awesome to hear the whole incident in detail
Jimmy Spencer never failed to entertain. I worked at DIS 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. I always enjoyed being around, and talking with, Jimmy Spencer.
Jimmy Spencer * Never Forgets” his side of anything!!!! 😂
and everything
He seems to remember additional details with each retelling, too 🤣 Mike Davis's "Hrm...don't really remember you saying that at the time!" reaction to Spencer's "he threatened my family" bit is rather telling, IMO. I kinda sorta maybe a little bit suspect Spencer maybe kinda sorta conjured up some additional recollections after the fact to make himself look a little better & Kurt look a little worse.
You gotta make these full episodes on youtube. The podcast is good but the visual reactions are priceless
So I grew up with Jimmy Spencer and his family being family friends with my family, Jimmy’s brother Gary and Paul actually used to drive race cars at the local track and my dad would sponsor cars and whatever color scheme Jimmy had that season, my dad would have his car painted the same way. But hearing him talk about his mom and dad, especially Pop Spencer, made me tear up a little because I know the kind of man he was. Great family
I barely remember Ed and the rest of the family because I was just a small kid but I remember Jimmy at port royal as I was running around in the pits as a kid. What I do recall is Jimmy never backed down from any driver confrontations 😂
Ah, the good ol days at selinsgrove with Ed throwing a sledge hammer through the windshield of a tow truck
Jimmy being on the show has been one of the coolest things to listen and hear about all behind the scenes stuff that went on in NASCAR back in the day. Thanks for this Dale and the rest of the Dirty Mo gang
been binging Dale pod videos for about 24-48 hrs now and Jimmy is at the top of the list, need him back on
I met Jimmy at Daytona in 1996 and he was the nicest, funniest, most gracious athlete I've ever met. He was working the grill himself, fed us lunch, loaded us up with swag, told us stories and basically treated us like family until he just had to get back to work. I'll remember that until the day I meet my maker!
Again one of the best interviews l have ever seen thank you so much for sharing it with us no one else would have. Thank you
The best part about Spencer is he is and always was a no nonsense kind of driver. Even in interviews he was no nonsense just the way it is. Was always a Dale Sr. Fan but always had respect for Spencer.
Jr. is showing why this podcast is so good and just how smart he is! During this entire series; Dale has sat back and let the story tell it's self. Most "hosts" would be trying make themselves the center of attention. Great series of shows.
Never forget why Jimmy Spencer was called Mr. Excitement. One of my favorites from the last golden era of NASCAR.
I had forgotten about this feud. I was heavily into NASCAR from 2001 at 15 years old (because I wanted to watch Dale Sr. race) until probably 2012. Dale Jr. was always my favorite driver. I remember these types of feuds and that was a hell of good a time to be a fan. I have no idea about the things that have happened since. This is a great podcast and I can learn about things I never knew lmao.
Isn’t it fascinating how Dale Jr is willing to step in the shadow a bit and let his co-hosts have the spotlight (more so than other hosts would)?
Hes doing it but still directing them to give out key details.
He knows he has "good radio" going as the saying goes.
He's a class act and a genuinely grateful human being with tons of $$$ and still remains grounded. NASCAR put TONS of weight on him... Go back and listen to the original broadcast of the 2001 Daytona summer race and LISTEN to the broadcast.. Can you imagine them getting away with that in today's pc world? The amount of pressure put on him... I don't know HOW he raced full time as long as he did.
And best of all he "doesn't consider himself a flag waiving American"
you guys are impressed that he knows how to have a conversation, see it's flow and ebb? incredibly low bar for you goofs
I sooooooo wish we could have full video uploads of these podcasts. It would be amazing!
Great interview! Personally, I’ve lost almost all interest in NASCAR over the past few years and it’s partly due to the personalities of many of the drivers these days. The sport is nothing like what it was 20 years ago.
Same with me. I used to watch nascar all the time great personalities back then. Spencer was one of my favourites. Makes me laugh.
I’ll watch like 5 minutes of races and it’s exactly why of what Philip above has said ….
@@johnfortuna4190 Same here...I just can't watch it anymore...a few minutes and I walk away
Same here! Growing up every single Sunday the whole fam watching every race glued with my dad. Theres only a few times in my life that if I'd have the chance to go back I would and it was all of those Sundays grilling out watching all the intense rivalries back then. It was straight up great entertainment every single race. I since haven't watched in years either because it's just not how it used to be. Great memories that's for sure. Boogity boogity boogity boys let's go racin!
There are no personalities these days, it's all just a bunch of vanilla kid Gerber babies
This is the type of personalities that NASCAR is missing now in it’s current day state or maybe they are there but the broadcasting team isn’t showing them for fear of backlash.
Truth
OMG!!! My wife drugged me into NASCAR along time ago and I remember Jimmy but hearing the back story is awesome. I could listen to you guys all day. For an 81 yr. old that’s saying something.
JIMMY, YOU ALWAYS WERE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE DRIVERS....I'M SPEAKING OF THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF FANS. ONE OF THE LAST OF THE TRUE OLD SCHOOL RACERS. COULD LISTEN TO YOU ALL NIGHT TELL YOUR STORIES OF THE MODIFIEDS, TRUCKS, BUSCH (CARS) AND CUP. WISH YOU WERE STILL RACING.
If NASCAR still had drivers the like of Jimmy Spencer, NASCAR would probably still have fans!
NASCAR, has plenty of fans. Yes, it’s not as popular as it was, we all know that. It’s a different world now a days. I do agree that Jimmy Spencer is missed. We need good personalities.
👍
& Tony Stewart
Absolutely..there fan base is leaving
Absolutely
Jimmy Spencer i freaking love you !
I have laughed so hard at this interview.
Me too! Lol
Cale Yarborough got into a fight with the Allison's, no issue other than a fine.
Kurt gets slapped by Jimmy Spencer, Mr. Excitement got a suspension and threatened with a lawsuit
Because Cale's fight with the Allisons made national news and brought attention to the first live Daytona 500 on tv
@@arthuralford Well they still play it today like it’s the proudest moment in NASCAR that’s how fucked up and two face NASCAR is it’s like the mafia.

@Scrubber Slave Nascar changed so they couldn't, Carl would have 2 if t was Winston points
@Scrubber Slave We could also say, and I think more accurately, they never won another championship after Martin left. Mark was a mastermind with setting up the cars.
Bout the same time the stopped winning championships
I love listening to these guys talk about their stories from back in the day
Great job everyone that’s involved with the podcast. I love hearing people in the sport , unfiltered telling their side of the story.
Jimmy Spencer was one of the best. I miss him on the track big time.
Was always entertaining
On todays episode of NASCAR's Days of our Lives... Damn, I love these stories!
Best interview yet, I don't remember everything about those days but I do remember the Brickyard incident. Great job Dale and Mike and everyone there. Now you know what's next don't you, get Kurt. Thanks again Y'all are Awesome.
I'll say this. Spencer hasn't seen hide nor hair of Kurt over the past 3 or so years... I think he's accurate to how Kurt was until he finally chilled out a few seasons ago. I'm not a big Kurt Busch fan, but he's definitely improved a lot from where he was in the Roush/Penske days...
Can you name a team that ever gave him a contract extension? Lmfao both of the Bush's are little weasels.
@@cliff4695 Again, I'm not Kurt or Kyle fan in any regard, but I can also see improvement and recognize it in people when they do improve and Kurt has. I still don't like the guy very much, but I bet Ganassi does offer him an extension... though I understand the point you're trying to make.
Kurt has had no choice but to fake nice or he wouldn't even have the ride at Ganassi because he burned all his bridges years ago. Keep hearing a rumor 23XL wants him for next year. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel on both sides. That team is doing nothing with Bubba and I think it's pretty clear even Ganassi (no longer a contender) has also had enough Kurt. If 23XL hires him it isn't really a step up from Bubba and they will probably toot he is a former champion, but like over a decade ago.
@@cliff4695 Genassi gave him a contract extension last year and his original Stewart Haas Deal was 1 year that got extended to 5
@@FloridaManRacer I don't think that's gonna happen...
Being a huge NASCAR fan of that time I found this to be one of the best interviews of the show of course never a dull moment with Jimmy. I liked Mike’s involvement in the story but JR’s taking command of the interview (as should be) and bringing it back on course was most impressive. Thank you for posting this I enjoyed it.
I think this was the best week. Thank you
I could listen to Jimmy tell stories all day.
Hello Dale and Mike and Jimmy this was the best interview I have seen and heard Jimmy Spencer is a in a million 🙌 Wishing everyone there well Take Care Guys
"You want the truth, imma tell you the truth"
- Jimmy Spencer 5 minutes after lying about wrecking Kurt.
Jimmy Spencer comes from a time when men addressed problems face to face when respect was earned not bought and if you can't handle the heat dont compete
Jimmy came from a very tough community right up the road from me....Berwick, PA. His old man and uncle ran a wrecking yard and used car parts business and you really did not want to mess with the entire family, if you knew what was good for you.
Jimmy was always a bum driver who got lucky to win a couple races
@@aaronblankenship6327he won more races than you
You should have Kurt back on and ask him about his ex-girlfriend the assassin
The one who is currently in prison?
I'm pretty sure all of my ex girlfriends were assassins. Is that not the norm for everybody!
@Tobi no Patricia wasn't in the picture by this point
@Tobi That's exactly what I thought of too.
👍🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow, we get 4 videos with the Elephant, Jimmy Spencer?? I say two thumbs up, both for Jimmy and for producing this much video!
After Jack punted Kurt in 2005, he proved Spencer right. I'm so glad that Kurt is in a much better space now.
His nick name mr.excitment totally make sense years later...this has to be one of the greatest interviews dirty mo has ever done....the hear Mike so involved is Jimmy's racing career ....Mike side and Jimmy's side aren't the same but they come to the same conclusion....this was great
I’m glad that Kurt has worked on himself and all since then, but threatening a man’s family and then going and tattling on him when he hits you has to be one of the most cowardly things I’ve ever heard of
Took Kurt 15+ years but he finally grew up.
If it was true which it is not.
Yeah I really have a hard time believing spencer man
Now get Kurt on the show and let him talk about this lol 😂 enjoyed spencer so much loved it !!!
Spencer punching Busch was one of the great moments in NASCAR. I loved it!
He deserved it is why. When some one needs an ass kicking it’s always great.
Jimmy Spencer's Punch Out co starring Kurt Busch.
Still didn't hit him hard enough.

Jimmy had his moments of glory & conflict and as you stated always entertaining!
He was known as Mr. Excitement for a good reason!
jimmy spencer is the exact type of old school personality that nascar needs back in the sport
Jimmy Spencer is gold on the the show !
Love how still after all these years Spence is still burying Kurt Busch without mincing words. This episode certainly doesn't paint Kurt in a good light lol
Jr, we need a follow up. Let's get Spence and Kurt together at the table. That would be a hell of an episode!
Dale is the best host, he brings out the best in everyone on the podcast.
Bobby Allison taught me that …. 🤔
“This needs to be addressed”.
And you don’t threaten a man’s family, period !
4 hours of laughter. Great podcast!
So cool listening to Mike tell stories
Jimmy Spencer vs Kurt Busch was like the “bad guy vs bad guy” feud… *you literally didn’t cheer for either and just enjoyed it* lol
It was one of those perfect blend feuds where both had about the same amount of fans/haters.

Thank You Dirty Mo for the jimmy spencer show. can i point out something to you Spence. right now, you bring more meat to diner table than any driver current and whats sitting there with you. Jim your a legend of the sport still living amungst us, a walking talking encylopedia of rich Nascar knowledge and history. you are this generations link to the past Jimmy Spencer. we dont need a dale replacement. its your time Jim. we a need a hands on man like dale tho..who knows his way around a car, any tool in the shop, on any track, any set up, any driver, team, owner, stat, right of ways, one ways, no ways and only on sundays. lets get you back on the air. i ask you Mr E. can you humble yourself and just teach..you have it in you. that Nascar Race Hub show you had on speed channel was actually pretty good, i learned a lot about your relevance to this sport watching that footage over and over the past couple of weeks. thats whats missing is You. ther eis an empty void. let go of that pride and anger. adapt and move on. give the people what they need, not what they want. get it on the record Jim, for we loose you. Dirty Mo & Co..are your equals they verified the truth. and mike deserves a thank you from you and Dale needs some cheat (i mean sweet) parts for the ranch. no..i never intended to get you sideways or turn you around..i was just testing you.
Kurt Busch was a punk early in his career. Mid career he had anger management problems. The last few years he's mellowed
Let's hope he has. The 2 events involving Kurt that shaped my early opinion were the time he messed around in Maricopa County and ended up on Sheriff Joe's bad side. Pink prison uniforms and bologna sandwiches are not a good look. The most egregious, in my opinion, is the time he referred to Roger Penske as, "Dude" during a race when Roger was trying to calm him down and get him to re-focus.
I don't remember which driver's wife went to Kurt's first wife, who was sitting on the pit box, and chewed her out about Kurt wrecking her husband. They interviewed Kurt's wife later and she was crying and saying "...he's so misunderstood." It wasn't a year or two later and they divorced.
Jimmy's interview is one of the best I have watch. He is awesome!!!
Spencer calling Kurt Busch a bad driver is rich. He owns a 6th place finish at Indy , a Cup Title , Qualified 12th for the NHRA Gator Nationals, owns several Legend car records/titles and still has a top/2nd tier ride today. Was he a little knob his first several years in Cup? Yep, but he ALWAYS could drive the HELL out of whatever you give him.
Never said he was a bad driver, said kurt was a good and great driver if I remember. Spence said he made terrible decisions and was a punk/coward.
You need to watch & listen again, and pay attention, because Spencer sat right there and said "He's a great driver, but" .......I don't recall exactly what he said AFTER admitting that Kurt is a great driver, but the rest of his statement alluded to what a punk Kurt is, and NO RESPECT. Spencer also said Kurt was a coward.......and he is.
15:52 "The fans didnt know, he's a bad driver, he's a terrible driver."
16:08 "he's a hell of a racecar driver."
17:19 "I'm not saying he can't drive."
Man talk about the fastest uno reverse ever
The blue #7 Sirius car with the dog on it...!! Always enjoyed his racing and run ins 🏁🙃👍🏼
I had, and still have, a 1/24 of that car. Didn't have much money around that time, but, dammit, I was gonna have Jimmy's car.
always enjoyed seeing him DNF or finish 38th 3 laps down.
Love Jimmy Spencer, great interview thank you
Stuff like this, is way more exciting to listen to, than the normal nascar stuff we hear all the time.
I disagree we didn’t even get half way though a full story
6:20 Spencer says Busch called him an 6:23 "old, decrepit has-been". Ol' Kurt wasn't exactly accurate... Jimmy Spencer is an old, decrepit NEVER WAS!
OMG Jimmy Spencer is a fooking legend, it's so nice to here a driver tell it like it is . Today's Nascar needs drivers like Jimmy that will tell it like it is instead of these drivers that sound like robots for their sponsors.
This interview is AWESOME! Damn, Jr has a GREAT show!
Kurt's face hit Jimmy's fist.
I worked with two mechanics thirty years ago that corroused every night. On day the came in telling how they went to a teen bar and got into a fight against several teenagers. Ken said that one of them kept hitting his brass knuckles with his face. We all had a big laugh. A year later Ken came in with big black sunglasses on. Glen said show the guys your eyes. Ken took off the glasses to show us two black eyes. The fellow he beat up caught him at a dog fight. Ken hit him first but the guy said you won last time but you won't this time . He got Ken on the ground and was trying to gouge his eyes out. Luckily for Ken they pulled him off him. Take care.
@@johnblood3731 ouch
That's like how Bobby Allison talks about the fight with Cale Yarborough, "He went to beating my fists with his nose."
I thought Kurt hit the steering wheel. Lol.
Kurt try to headbutt Jimmy's fist lol
It's funny to think being in a magazine was a bigger deal than a website back then
The audio from Kurt's in car tells a different story than what Jimmy recalls, but, it's entertaining none the less. Props to Junior for trying to keep this train wreck on track! Haha
Seems to me it was more along the lines of he was "trying to knock Jimmy's fenders in but messed up my own instead"
I agree with this comment haha this was cool to see but I don’t think jimmy is aware the whole conversation is on UA-cam and I doubt Kurt tried punching him from inside the car that’s just foolish
NASCAR needs more Jimmy Spencers!! Love that guy!
Jimmy is still so great he is truly the last of the “real stock car drivers “ miss you shoeing a car Spence!!!!!
15:47, I feel bad for Spencer here. Look I started watching NASCAR in late 07'ish so I didn't know of this story until way later. But his description of said driver MATCHES PERFECTLY of my observations of Kurt in the first 8 or so years I DID follow the sport. You don't get passed around like a blunt from team to team burning bridges on terrible terms without being seriously fucked up in the head. Especially for the level of racing skill he has. That was a toxic man. I get it he's really chilled out and worked on himself now, for real, but I don't blame Jimmy one bit for the obvious STILL disdain he has towards him. Was never a fan of Kurt and his actions on and off the track.
Kurt was always either my top or in my top 3 most hated drivers up until the point he got fired from Penske. He has come a long, long way since, and honestly, he's probably one of the top 3 I pull for now.
This has made me a jimmy spencer fan for life , he stands up for what’s right and doesn’t sugar coat the facts 🏁🇺🇸
Facts? He is delusional. I met his uncle in years ago and his uncle didn’t even like him
His uncle probably wanted a free hand out and jimmy wouldn’t give it to him, it’s not about who likes him, the guy deserves more respect than he gets
Hate it or love it Jimmy Spencer was fantastic for NASCAR
Kurt has softened up a bit, but Kyle Bush should get his butt kicked almost every week.
Got that right
It's funny because Kyle Busch has inadvertently proven that grown men and women still feed off of gossip. Because at the end of the day, 98% of everything Kyle says and does is just drama and has no real effect on how the fans watch NASCAR every week and yet they continue to let Kyle Busch live in their heads rent free.
Or daily.... And twice on Sunday 😎
I can't stand Kurt but I love Kyle, I didn't at first but the kid can drive, NO doubt about that!!!
Spencer v. Busch was easily one of the greatest moments in NASCAR. The whiny, spoiled coward got what was coming to him. He poked the wrong bear. Glad to hear the whole story. I knew there was no way Jack Rousch couldn’t see what a dumbass he had driving his car. Kurt always talked tough but ran away like a little girl. His brother was just as bad.
Jimmy was a great guest on the DJD!!! He is so funny! However, he said repetitively during his time on SPEED that he and Kurt became friends after his retirement. After seeing this podcast, and him giving Kurt the crying towel multiple times on his show, I think that Jimmy should just be realistic and say that he doesn't like Kurt. XD
I am glad to hear thee rest of the story
It won't happen, but I would love for Jimmy to know that I (and probably a TON of other people) realized really quickly when he started doing commentary on Speed, that he wasn't the bastard the media made him out to be. I remember watching him and thinking "this guy is actually pretty fun. Why does everyone hate him so much ?" Not only that, but how the hell did he get the Speed deal in the first place if he was such a prick, right ?
I feel since Jimmy is not PC and NASCAR was going PC that this marked the end of his time. Pretty sad.
Empty seats in the stands kind of explains everything

This was a fantastic conversation!
I just watched the SRX race from Eldora tonight and was thinking: Jimmy Spencer is who Tony and Ray need to get in that series next year! And Kenny Schrader, and Matt Kenseth. Those three would be great in the SRX series! Somebody please tell Smoke to get that done. 😁
I don’t see Kenseth or Jimmy Spencer racing period…but I’m surprised Kenny Schrader isn’t in that series that dude would race Fred Flintstones if he could
@@grizzgrizzly7208 My personal guess is that Schrader would probably like to run the SRX series but was previously committed to too many other events or series to be able to make the schedule. Maybe, just a guess.
I hear you not seeing Spencer or Kenseth racing anything anymore, but prior to this would you have thought Michael Waltrip, Bill Elliott, Willy T Ribbs, Paul Tracy were any more likely to race? I wouldn't have, but there they are. For what little it's worth, I'd have thought Spencer and Kenseth both more likely than Elliott or Ribbs at least.
I don't think Spencer would be able to fit through the window to get in the car.
@@TonyM132 yeah that much is true but at least with Kenseth, he was already basically retired then came back last year in what probably had to be the most draining season of his career and I just wonder if there is any burnout there, but maybe if the series actually has staying power we will see him eventually and Mr. Excitement I personally would like to see him in that series idk if it would actually happen
I’d like to see Dale Jarrett suit up for a couple races. Miss seeing him on track
I feel i missed out so much during the era Jimmy Spencer was racing. His personality is the type Nascar would die for right now. We need drivers like him in the sport, desperately.
I always thought that Kyle needed his own Jimmy Spencer. Getting hit and then booed at Bristol was the best thing that ever happened to Kurt.
Luke wasn't a good fit at Hendrick, he tried to be Tony, but it wasn't til Kenseth came along that Kyle really came into his own. And when Matt's contract wasn't renewed, Kyle had won enough races he went back to trying to be Tony.
Matt and Carl's abilities outside the car were as important to Gibbs' success those few years as their ability in it.
I would love for Kurt to come on the show to give the other side of the story
God me too!
This was one of the greatest driver vs driver incidents in nascar history. Something tells me Jimmy still doesn't like Kurt lol
I could listen to Spencer for days
