In this short DIY video, we will show you two simple steps that you can do to determine whether you have a faulty mass air flow meter. These steps can be used on most bmw models especially on e46 e39 e53 with M54 engines. As stated in our video, we recommend visiting a dependable shop if you require a proper diagnosis on your bmw.

Changed crank vent system which was faulty. Engine the run rough once done !!

Sometimes a bad MAF will make your automatic transmission change gears really hard. Feels like they're slamming from gear to gear. Also the transmission dash light will turn (cog with the exclamation).

@@UniqueMercenary, should have noted that it was a cheaper aftermarket maf that caused this issue. Replaced it with the VDO, no more weird issues.

BEFORE REPLACING MAF SENSOR MAKE SURE NO HOLES IN INTAKE BOOOT AND MAKE SURE VALVE COVER GASKET IS GOOD
Which valve are you talking about? there are two the black plastic (rectangle shape above the ICV) and there is also the ICV (metal below the plastic one), both have gasket/seal rubber. My car does turn on but the idling is so rough with random shaking. Cleaned the MAF with Liqui Moly maf cleaner, worked good for a day or two then the issue returned back.
I mean the only reason the check engine light came on with the mass air flow sensor code is because you unplugged it nonetheless good video to show that a bad mass air flow sensor won't trigger the check engine light but won't let your car idle either
Wow exact problem on my 01 E46 325i. Car randomly cuts off and takes several times to startup. I unplugged maf, starts up like a champ. Definitely gonna need a new maf. Thanks for sharing 👌

hey quick question I bought a mass air flow cause mine was faulty, connected it, started it and it still does the same thing. Then I saw that there was a crack in my intake boot because it’s very cold in Canada right now so before buying that I want to make sure that I don’t have any other problems like fuel pump because the new maf was plugged the car idled and after a few seconds it died
Crack in the intake boot will cause a shitty maf sensor reading and will do that
remember to change air filter aswell, a dirty filter can cause 3ff0 aswell as leaks or cracks in pipe that goes to turbo

I have that exact problem on a 2001 330i. What was the problem? I just spent $200 on a Delphi MAF. Plugged it in same thing. Won't run with it.

Afternoon I had a sanser replaced but when ever I connect the new one the car continue to switch off but without the sanser its not stopping what could be the problem
Man my z3 idle is 700rpm, when accelerate ups only at 1000 and immediately stalls at 0; my scanner diagnosis is maf sensor but I don’t know if that is really the main problem. I change all intake lines already to discard a any vacuum liking

I replaced MAF sensor but the problem is same if i press brake accelerator stops working... MAF values remains stuck in live data view. Any idea what can be the issue ?
My engine m54b22 works notably better without MAF sensor, much smoother acceleration, no sudden drops of power. With or without sensor the engine starts very well. Does this mean, my ECU since long ignores the MAF indications and it died long ago? Why I see correct indication in INPA?
without a maf you will be running rich. vehicle will run well, but you run the risk of burning your valves because DME doesn't know how much fuel to pour into cylinders. Just get a new maf, cheaper than netting a new engine
I just bought an e46 the maf sensor was already unplugged, plugged it in and ran worse? has it been tuned to not run it or bad maf sensor? no check engine light comes on when unplugged.
When you unplug the Mass Airflow Senson, it disables some of the other features of the engine, like the vanos and things like that. So, the issue with your engine isn't the mass sensor, it's something else further up.
Can you leave the without maf sensor or necessary need to replace?
It’s not ideal to leave it without as it can make it hard on fuel cause it’s can’t read the right amount of air coming in and to burn fuel with so the answer is no

What kind of Scanner did you use, and can I buy one from anywhere or from you?
We use a snap-on scanner, however, you can purchase a good scanner from any auto parts store. Dont be cheap when purchasing one and make sure that it will read your bmw

On my 320D I changed MAF & Charge pressure sensor, but it still claims MAF error.
I even checked wires and fuses to & from the MAF sensor, including the signal wire running to the ECU, all good, ECU gets varying MAF signal at various throttle positions (with engine running of course) but simply doesn't want to read it.
It runs strong, but fails emissions testing giving the engine way too much fuel (which on Diesels is actually bad) and without that = No road go, no road go = Useless as a car (as cars are meant to road go and thats what people buy them for lol).
Anyone know what could be the issue?
Replaced the sensor and the fuses yet still the same problem and same code P0102. Any of you out there that can give any suggestions on what else it could be it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Interesting I bought a blue streak from O'Reilly and same issue car runs like shit until I reset code or unplugg maf air 🤔
I am pulling code C0004 but I’m having a stalling issue after the car heats up I’ve changed ICV it ran fine for 2 weeks maybe now the same issue

No. Seems you need to get your dme checked.

Check your spark plugs and coils, vvts sensors (variable valve timing sensors) and o2 sensors and ecentric shaft motor they also will make the engine have a rough idle

Thank you for watching. Unfortunately, we don't have any diesel models in the US.
My car runs without it plugged it, the second I plug back it it starts and dies
But still.. It could be just a vacuum leak from maf towards the engine..this also makes the car run rough because it gets more air in then the maf reads.. For example.. The elbow could be torn.. Letting more air in
I would replace maf as a final solution.. Instead always check for vacuum leaks first
