we are asking about the tablet application. By the way I was struggling to find an application for my two cars to be able to read the MAF sensor as the value on both was 0 (zero). I found out that both my cars do not have MAF but they have MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor). So if anyone cannot find any value in MAF, check MAP. Also the MAP is not next to the air filter and I cannot remove it myself. I need an engineer to open it. Cheers

I have a 96 Toyota camry with 224k miles on it and I get about 20 miles per gallon do you think I can improve my gas mileage by cleaning the mas air flow sensor?Great video, very informative!Cheers
Here are some things that could improve mpg: A wheel alignment, correct tire pressure, new tires, new spark plugs, air filter, an oil change with the thinnest oil recommended in the manual, cleaning the MAF sensor, cleaning the throttle body and intake manifold, cleaning the fuel injectors
Hey Chris, this video saved me a trip to the mechanic. 2003 ford explorer had rough idle. Cleaned the mass air flow sensor, just like you demonstrated, and the problem is fixed. It's so easy, even I could do it. Thanks!
Love watching your channel, Ironically I was cleaning my MAF Sensor when your video came on. This simple job made such a difference. I have a 2004 GMC Yukon which has been running sluggish and rattles when going up hills. I purchased an inexpensive OBII reader and it said MAF Sensor. So I pulled it out cleaned it and now it has full power again. No noises and going up hill is such a difference. Note to All, if you have a K&N Filter cleaning your MAF Sensor is a must. when I took my sensor out, even the screen was blocking air flow due to oil residue. I'm personally going back to paper.
The MAF Sensor is perhaps one of the most neglected parts on the Air System. Cleaned up the other halfs MAF on a 2010 Corolla Sport. What a huge improvement in both the idle and the fuel economy...runs like a New Car again, and she's quite happy about it!
Thank you for this video! I have cleaned the MAF sensor with excellent results! Before cleaning, my average fuel economy was similar to yours. (I have a '99 Ranger, manual transmission with currently 141K miles) I WAS getting around 17-19 mpg. After cleaning the MAF sensor, here are my results: Fill up 1 - 21.7 mpg Fill up 2 - 21.4 mpg Fill up 3 - 22.8 mpg Fill up 4 - 23.8 mpg Fill up 5 - 23.5 mpg. Thank you for this channel, you are AWESOME!

Chris I am a single mother of 2 with only my income. Thank you so much for your videos, I am able to work on my own vehicle to save myself time and money! I trust you more then big mechanic shops!! Thank you 😃
Chris gives consistent great explainations, procedures, and information! My service engine light came on in my 2005 Mazda Mazda3 2.0 with code P2195. I cleaned my mass air flow sensor and it turned off the engine light without the need of an OBDII scanner clearing it. Thanks Chris.
I want to say thank you for all your videos! I have a big passion for cars/trucks! I have a 96 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and was having problems with it not wanting to start after it warmed and was driven for awhile, it would take me 5+ mins. sometimes to get it to start. I tried this on my truck and the mass airflow sensor for one looks brand new now and it sounds so much better. It idles a lot better and the truck starts right up after driving it for awhile and I go to leave again. So Thank you. I didn't know you could clean them!
I gotta check this on my 1991 4x4 v6 Toyota pickup because every once in a while I'll get a check engine light and when it comes on I get hesitant acceleration. I had already checked the gas cap next is to to check the fuel pipe for any leaks. amazing view sir! you've taught me a lot !
Probably one of the best sites on youtube. No nonsense, I don't have to hear about feeding the dog, picking up the wife or just general (it doesn't make a difference sense) stuff. Not trying to be a frustrated stand-up comedian. Thank you, Chris, you're my go-to mechanic.
Hi Chris. Just want to thank you for the video. Today, I was disappointed by my Mechanic and decided to walk through the town until i find a "mass airflow sensor cleaner". I couldn't believe my eyes when i eventually found the product, as it is difficult to find it in my country. My car had all the symptoms you described, but after spraying in the sensor...waited for 30mins to start my car again. Look, my rev is perfectly normal and car does not stall or shake.
Chris Your videos are extremely helpful for us backyard mechanics! Every time I have to work on a vehicle the 1st thing I do is see if you have a video on it. Thanks a bunch.
I'll probably do this to my 98 Explorer just as a preventive/because I can maintenence. I just wanted to say Chrisfix is one of my go to channels because his videos are always highly detailed, accurate, and safe for the vehicle. Thanks Chris. Keep up the good work.
Chris, as usual, educational & fun to learn. You have a way to speak with your audience, without making them feel as if you’re talking down to them. A real professional presentation! Thank-you, Jack
Why haven’t I learned yet to just come to your videos? Waste time listening to these other goofuses prattle on and on about unnecessary crap then usually get confusing or incomplete instructions. You’re always right to the point, easy to understand and include what’s necessary and leave out the fat. Thank you
I had my Ford Explorer tuned up at 150,000 miles for stalling out. Then at 175,000 the idle started getting funning esspecially in humid weather. I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor With CRC cleaner and changed the air filter, it runs better and gets better Miles per Gallon. My 2010 is probably due to have parts on the out from age, but I tell you this really did the trick.
Great video. Very helpful. Note, you could just undo the 2 Torx bolts on top of the sensor and pull it out instead of removing the airbox. This does present more opportunity to accidentally touch the sensor elements (big no-no) but I found is much easier if I am careful. Thank you Chris.
THANK YOU... for making a clear, concise, and on point DIY repair video w’ exceptional visual and audio quality. I’ve subscribed, tapped the notification bell and am thrilled to have found your channel. Bravo & again, thank you!
Just cleaned mine when I changed the air filter for the first time can’t wait to keep my old 1998 Ford Explorer going for as long as possible. Thank you for the confidence to go under the hood for the first time.

This was the best and most informative and simply explained video of the many I have seen (I am not a DIY car guy). I have replaced my mass airflow sensor twice (check engine light comes on and same code for MAS) so now I am going to look at all of the scenarios you discussed. And not to mention, you gave all the information in the description including what OBDII scanner you used w/links (was one of the things I was wondering as I watched). My car has 140k miles and I want to get 200k out of it. This will be my go-to channel. Subscribed and two thumbs way up!
Wish I would have seen this before I was messing around with my car.. Just wiped it with a napkin cause I thought it looked dirty, didn't know it was sensitive 😂 but that honestly made it turn on and not die on me lol, time to clean it for real now. Thanks Chris!
Thank you VERY VERY much. U have helped me in so many ways. I have a toyota highlander. And these type of how to vids are so helpful since all of us are visual learners. It just takes the right tools & patience to do these jobs. Thanks imma go do it on my car. I also use blu driver as we'll
Your video is so informative for a multitude of reasons, not just the MAF part! Major value added video here due to 1.) Demonstrating with Blue Driver OBD2 device: I bought one to scan live data. It scanned live data but I have no clue what the numbers are telling me. I'm not a mechanic. 2.) You explain a very probable cause of the MAF malfunctioning due to the oil residue coming off of the K&N air filter. I had one of those too and recently decided to go back to a paper filter. I'm pretty certain my car's problem is due to K&N oil residue coming off of the filter and onto the MAF hot wires and messing with my car's performance. Thank you smart man!
I used the fix that you recommended and it worked perfectly. Car is accelerating smoothly without hesitation. MAF cleaner was only $10.00 at OReilly. Thank you.
The MAF is a hot-wire anemometer (air speed meter) operating at 100 to 200°. The moving air cools the sensor causing a change in it temp. (for which the PCM must apply more power to the MAF to maintain the hot wire at the specified temp.) which is ultimately proportional to the air flow rate. In this video, the assembly shown includes the MAF sensor (longer column) as well as the IAT (Intake Air Temp. sensor) shorter one. Doesn't hurt to clean up both sensor elements.
Advise to all watching this clip. Great video. The air mass sensor can be screwed off without roving air filter so in the video the air mass sensor. Unclip the cord. Unscrew the bolts holding sensor. The complete mass sensor comes out clean and replace. .simple
Except a lot of cars (like mine) have special security screws. I'm not going to go out and buy the bit to take it out when the job can be done by removing a simple hose
So, my car has been acting up with the ESP light coming up once in a while, just did this and hoping for the best! Think I’ll buy one of those Bluetooth readers. You’re the best Chris!
2006 hyundai Tuscon had a check engine light came on for me. I had an OBD to hook up and got the reading of the bad mixture. I used your steps,. Replaced my air filter, got the spray and my local Autozone. I couldnt get the ring off completely so I shot it as close as I could through lifting off the intake from the filter. Also picked up a good quality fuel injection cleaner and loaded up into a full tank of super unleaded. The combination of all of this did the trick. About 50 miles later and the check engine light shut off. Great video. It really helped!
D.L Gillum I have a 2005 Nissan Quest. Running rough, got code that said camshaft position sensor was bad. I replaced it and just a few miles later same problem, same code....?
Thanks for the simple fix Chris! 2015 Explorer with 55,000 miles. Idles smother, more pickup off the line, and that hesitation feeling upon acceleration seems to have gone! Eight bucks for all of that! Best eight bucks I’ve ever spent...... It was almost back to the dealer for a diagnostic test as I have an extended warranty. Hopefully I don’t have to go that route now.
Thank you so much for this information. My 99 Honda accord is going absolutely NUTS with high vibration when accelerating or idling at a light. I've already had the egr valve cleaned and and exhaust ports cleaned. But all those parts were clumped up with carbon. I've had several crank and no starts (replaced the reply). Heavy vibration was eliminated, but my car still has a high idle. So this is my next step since I have a K&N air filter. Lots of things on my list that I learned from Eric the car guy too. So your videos are super detailed and informative which I greatly appreciate. THANK YOU❣
Great step by step video . And thanks for pointing out to use mass air flow sensor cleaner ONLY . The sensor seems to work and look like a brand new one after you cleaned it and changed out the dirty filter . I need to do this to my Mercedes SL . My mechanic cleaned the MAF on my other mercedes and charged me $240 . I'm going to clean this one myself and save money . Thank you again.
This is a really old video, but I wanted to toss a comment in anyway. I went ahead and cleaned my sensor off yesterday as instructed. It didn't seem too bad, but when I put it back together, the indicator lights on my dash that had been stuck on since I bought the car used, three years ago, have all turned off and my car feels like it runs much better. I was really surprised by the difference. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. I've learned so much, and have been able to do a lot of my own repairs because of them.
Cleaned mine yesterday with mass air flow sensor cleaner. It was really dirty from the K&N cold air intake systems oil and everything the filter missed. Thanks for making this video.
It's because ECU is able to adjust air to fuel ratio better when MAF is clean. That means it won't run too rich, so less fuel is being used to keep engine running.
You're the man, ChrisFix. The process worked a treat. Easy to follow, easy to do. Nothing beats a late-night, high-speed "diagnostic" ride. Had to test the throttle response. Lol.
Thank you a million. I have had trouble w/ my LS1 for about 5 yrs and lately it had gotten worse. I bought some cleaner($12) and cleaned the MAS yesterday and my 01 SS runs sooo much better. Now on to the next issue.
Chris, daughter and mom just watched and followed your video "cleaning mass air flow sensor" we have a car not a truck but were still able to take it apart, clean and put back on. @@chrisfix No hesitation anymore. Now I just gotta get the timing set. Trucks a 98 chevy with a 5.7. It's got a drop in distributor with a non adjustable cap so I gotta get it dead nuts or else it runs like crap. Right now ive got it within a tooth or two from tdc but no matter what I do it still ends up being off a little bit. Next step is to take the gear off the bottom of the distributor and rotate it 180 around and see if I can get between gears since theres an odd number of teeth.

Thank you so m7ch for info. Sharing this knowledge feels like a heaven sent gift. In over five years of owning 2015 Ford Transit 250 Cargo Van I finally know for certain I can diagnose and either repair the frequent cause of this vehicle's breakdowns. Your video gave me a clear understanding why this vehicle fails to start leaving me stranded and with massive repair bills. The MAF is on top of the Air box. Exposed to moisture, dust, debris and such. Shame on FORD for neglecting to reveal this ridiculously poor failure in building a vehicle that was designed to fail.

I have a 2002 Honda Accord and I had to take it to the shop and they stated it was the mass airflow sensor that was bad and they wanted to charge me almost $400 to fix it after watching this video I did it myself exactly what you said and it works great after 3 weeks thank you a bunch you save me money which is what we're all doing today thank you very much
Awesome Riaden! Glad the video was helpful!!!
Riaden Chong $400 WTF? Are they changing a lambo mass airfkow sensor or what???

What a huge improvement in both the idle and the fuel economy...runs like a New Car again, and she's quite happy about it!
it makes a big difference
Thank you for this video! I have cleaned the MAF sensor with excellent results! Before cleaning, my average fuel economy was similar to yours. (I have a '99 Ranger, manual transmission with currently 141K miles) I WAS getting around 17-19 mpg. After cleaning the MAF sensor, here are my results:
Fill up 1 - 21.7 mpg Fill up 2 - 21.4 mpg Fill up 3 - 22.8 mpg Fill up 4 - 23.8 mpg Fill up 5 - 23.5 mpg. Thank you for this channel, you are AWESOME!
Speaking as an old fashioned Englishman It is a pleasure to see and hear a sensible Lad with a hand devoid of Tattoos and the rest of it...So straight forwards clear dictation and sound advice! Chris I hope you work for yourself and get good rewards..or if you are a employee your boss appreciates you and gives you a good living wage and a good bonus because you are worth it..Growing up in fifties England we had good values and good work ethics, sadly no more..If I find young people who give good service I always comment or contact the manager and give them feedback.. you can still have a Tecki type life with good old fashioned service and respect..really good to see your work ethics and thorough attention to detail.Keep up the good work and look after yourself!
I love how you give an illustration on how to clean the MAF sensor. Very informative indeed. Thanks Chris!
Chris I have a 99 B2500 I cleaned my mass air flow sensor and my IAC thanks to your videos. My truck sure does run better now and I'm getting better gas mileage. Thank you so much!!!!
No problem! Glad the videos are helpful!
I'll probably do this to my 98 Explorer just as a preventive/because I can maintenence. I just wanted to say Chrisfix is one of my go to channels because his videos are always highly detailed, accurate, and safe for the vehicle. Thanks Chris. Keep up the good work.
Gotta keep those exploders in tip top shape otherwise.... lol
You don't want to do that, MAF cleaner is a skin irritant. Removing the air box is a lot easier and safer.
@@williammesloh wear gloves
That's what I plan to do - my air box and hose is a MAJOR pain to get back on.
Absolutely the best auto shop on UA-cam! Thanks for your clear explanations and good videos.
Great video...str8 to points no bs no long boring intro.great job man.more work less bs.....my kinda guy. Five stars. definitely knows the difference in a video and audio recording
Simple and straight-forward process. Your video helped me accomplish this on my 2006 Eclipse GT as an easy Sunday project. Thanks so much.

@@chrisfix he Chris I have. The same problem I have mazda tribute 2008 so you think it works ?
Wish I would have seen this before I was messing around with my car.. Just wiped it with a napkin cause I thought it looked dirty, didn't know it was sensitive 😂 but that honestly made it turn on and not die on me lol, time to clean it for real now. Thanks Chris!
Thank you VERY VERY much. U have helped me in so many ways. I have a toyota highlander. And these type of how to vids are so helpful since all of us are visual learners.
It just takes the right tools & patience to do these jobs. Thanks imma go do it on my car. I also use blu driver as we'll
Ive watched a handful of these MAF sensor cleaning videos, this is by far the best
Thank you! I fixed my loss of power problem today in my 2010 Ford Taurus today. Your video really helped.
Glad it helped
Chris I can't thank you enough for posting this! You're a lifesaver!
No problem!! I am glad the video was helpful!
Thank you.
2012 Nissan Altima. Thank you for saving me about $400 from the Nissan thieves. Very helpful!!😎
It removed the check engine light right after you finished cleaning it? I have a 2014
I also have a 2012 Altima with a bad mass air flow sensor. Hoping this works
GS Allen here we go every one's a mechanic now
GS Allen where is the air intake sensor and the oxygen sensor?
Advise to all watching this clip. Great video. The air mass sensor can be screwed off without roving air filter so in the video the air mass sensor. Unclip the cord. Unscrew the bolts holding sensor. The complete mass sensor comes out clean and replace. .simple
No short cuts when it come to cars
Yeah, you can just unscrew the sensor itself without taking off the air intake cover.
Good video, good speaker, I could understand every word, very knowledgeable, thanks
This.
D.L Gillum I have a 2005 Nissan Quest. Running rough, got code that said camshaft position sensor was bad. I replaced it and just a few miles later same problem, same code....?

Faysal Chraibi Thanks a lot! I am glad you are learning and saving a lot of money!
ChrisFix I'm impressed with this video
Even though this video is 5 years old you helped me fix my 06 wrx
Respect
Andres Castrejon what was happening with your wrx? Im having rough idles and stalling at stop signs. Did you have those problem?
THANK YOU❣
Chris! Thank you so much!!! I just cleaned mine today your videos are the best!!!
Im thinking I can do THIS after watching him.
We want more videos like this Chris you're helping us a lot. Now I'm able to fix it and clean it just by myself because of you. ❤️ Much love
This was so clear and concise! You are an AWESOME teacher! Thank you so very much!❤
Great step by step video .
Awesome! I am glad the video helped! Nice work!
Cleaned mine yesterday with mass air flow sensor cleaner. It was really dirty from the K&N cold air intake systems oil and everything the filter missed. Thanks for making this video.
Did it work better what was wrong
Good info., I enjoy a thorough training session. I didn't know the MAF could increase fuel economy. Good job.
+Todd White Thanks!
It's because ECU is able to adjust air to fuel ratio better when MAF is clean. That means it won't run too rich, so less fuel is being used to keep engine running.
Thank God for my brains out and 8
Watching your videos is my life hobby 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Awesome! Now you have to get out there and start wrenching :p
I haven't driven far but am hoping and praying this is our extreme car problem.

I'm not trying to pry into your life or nothing but I am curious as to what was going on with your vehicle whenever you knew something was needing to be messed with like what the symptoms your vehicle had even if you think it might have been unrelated I'm just trying to get all the information I can from forums post threads and all that cuz I've got some issues with my vehicle that I know are issues in other brands and models so I'm just kind of trying to gather as much knowledge generally as I can

My trucks heater core coupler off the intake manifold broke its little plastic guts and shot coolant with a little k seal in it all over my engine bay including my airbox. Trucks been running terribly since than and I think this might be the problem. I just cleaned the maf sensor and currently am waiting to reassemble. Thanks for these videos dude you make everything so much simpler to understand while still being detailed.
Let me know if she gets better!
Chris Fix is a national asset!
Nice work, good production and well explained! I'm going with a replacement myself and only 31 dollars at partsgeek. Same context, own a 2001 vehicle that wasn't looked after by original owner, replacing everything since I took it over. She's a beauty now :) Get Yer Hands Dirty people! Learn! :)
Thanks for the video, going to go look at mine now, like literally right now.
Yep, I did the exact same thing. After a couple of solid blastings of MAF Cleaner and a 10 minute drying period, I reinstalled the MAF, fired Blue up and went for a quick rip around the 'hood. Amazing what a difference this simple process took! Hopefully she will stop throwing that pesky P0171 code now. Thanks Chris!!!!!
