      This isn't a competitor to the domino. You can't compare a $1000 tool to an $80 jig...people who are getting the jig were never going to get the domino because it's just not practical for them...festool prices out normal woodworkers for the same reason Mac or Snap On prices out normal people from their tools. They want to be seen as the "professionals" choice. Make no mistake, festool has margins the size of the Mariana trench.

    A wire brush with brass bristles is a handy way to clear the debris from a drill bit between each hole. Brass is softer than steel so it won't even scratch the bit, but it gets rid of the crud and if the bit is hot to the touch, it saves you from having to touch it to clear it. I keep a small brush with my drill and use it frequently. Works like a charm every time.

    I've used this before. The bit that came with it had enough slop in it to throw things out of alignment and, in some cases, not even allow the tenon to go in easily. I used a kreg pocket hole bit and it fits much better in the jig. Also, clamp the ever-living crap out of it so the jig doesn't move on you. Even a small move will be a disaster.

    Not a fan of this particular system. The domino is an absolutely amazing machine, but no longer costs the $725 it used to (and still should).
    So my joinery jig of choice is the dowelmax, for $225. It uses reference faces and edges, not lines, which can compound errors. It's incredibly well-built out of solid aluminum with hardened steel drill guides and brass adjustment knobs and screws. Dowels are plenty strong for most woodworking projects. Jessem makes a really nice doweling jig too, for around $200. That one is solid aluminum with hardened steel guides too. Those prices are higher than the beadlock (but not as much once you factor in the accessories and tenons), but they are definitely quicker to set up and use. Finally, I'm not a fan of how rockler cheapened the beadlock by making it out of plastic now.
    Tl;dr, buy a dowelmax or jessem doweling jig instead. Beadlock is a bust.

      @NWGR 2 роки тому +1

      @@bitsandatoms8008 Believe me, it has like a 10 minute learning curve. Once you get used to using the checkmarks, it's second nature and very simple to use. A lot of the pieces are for atypical joints; the dowelmax junior is an even simpler dowelmax setup with the main difference being that there's no built in clamp. Check out some videos on it; parillaworks did a great video showcasing it. Art from wordsnwood uses it a fair bit as well. It does seem complex, but it's very intuitive once you start working with it. Once spring rolls around I'll be doing my own video on it. I paid for mine; it wasn't gifted "for review".

    • @meperson
      @meperson 2 роки тому

      @@bitsandatoms8008 All the extra shims/pieces are for centering on various thicknesses of the wood. For a typical project you use formula from the manual to pick shims and don't need to change those during you workflow. You could also choose to not center and use fixed offset as well - that is what domino does. But for max strength it is good to center if you will have single row of dowels.

    Rockler has been trying to make that beadlock system happen for about 20 years now and I don’t know a single person that uses it. Why would you when you can dowel it just as fast, or pocket hole even faster, or if you’ve got the setup mortise and tenon almost as fast? That thing is a solution looking for a problem. And obviously if you’ve got a domino why would you even think about anything else.

I have all three sizes already and there is something else you can do with it even though you didn’t discuss it instead of using the bead lock floating tenons you can use it to make dowel holes. The half inch will give you two dowel holes, the threeeights will give you three and the 1/4 inch will give you four. You can also use it on mitered corners just remember to stagger your whole debts so you don’t drill out the other side and then cut the two sides of your floating tenant at 45° or whatever would best match your angle. Also you can do it as dowels and just use different lengths.

You must clamp the poop out of it otherwise the jig WILL move on you and the mortise is gone. Sandpaper is a great idea as an add on to the jig faces. Far too many issues with this jig do me. Does work well to drill out two or three dowel holes without making any adjustments for the headlock tenon. Also does a good job with the width adjusters for inset doweling. Gotta pay extra for those as well however. Just saying, this system is NOT a total no brainer, be very careful with your expectations. Great channel, best woodworking to all. Can you just drill the first three holes and use dowels? Seems as it would be quicker and just about as strong.

    • @MakeSomething
      @MakeSomething  2 роки тому

      I suppose you could but In my experience using dowel joinery is very frustrating during glue-ups.

      Seems to me those first three holes overlap. Dowels would go in the outside holes but tough to get that center dowel in.

    You can buy a chisel, a tenon saw, a marking gauge and a combination square for less than what this jig and a couple dozen of those tenons cost. No drilling noise and much more fun.

    Really fantastic little jig, Dave! 😃
    I would love to find it here in Brazil, but... I don't have that luck. 😕

    For the price of that domino. I bought a used tablesaw, a compressor on sale, a biscuit joiner, brad nailer, a used 23 gauge pinner, a used spindle/belt sander and a dado stack. Wonder where the money was better spent?

    • @TracksWithDax
      @TracksWithDax 2 роки тому

      I agree on that. But I also thought about it - $1000 for a piece of *production equipment* in a professional shop is totally worth it and really a small price to pay (for someone making thousands or tens of thousands per project). I think the only reason we think of it as overpriced and possibly not worth it is BECAUSE we see UA-camrs use it so often - particularly UA-camrs who are technically content creators and not professional woodworkers (i.e. batching out and selling products).
      That said, if I were a professional, it's a no-brainer to get one considering its production efficiency.

      Depends on whether you do woodworking for a living or as a hobby. For a living speed is essential or all your time gets spent being broke.

    This is all well and fine. However, I believe you can just do a mortise and tenon joint in the same amount of time, or less. To each their own, I guess.

    Very interesting! Do you find it to be better or stronger than dowel joints? It seems like a similar amount of glue surface.

    That's a cool technique, thanks for showing us! I also like how you made an actual useful project too, that really showed off the potential.
    I also noticed that your shots seem more static - is that a stylistic choice or are you still having to film by yourself? (I am not up to date on any other social media platforms, so excuse me if I have missed some update...)

    This is a great system if you want to be stuck with a slow ponderous and one dimensional method, which if you buy the tenon stock comes with a high running cost.
    I am bored with people touting things as an alternative to the Domino and David yoou should know better.
    The Domino is an amazing bit of kit which will do many many many things this will not, and if you cant afford one accept that you are going to work alot slower and possibly less accurately. I am long retired and when i closed down my shop the 1st thing i put in my car was my 2006 Domino all original never repaired that had made 10's of 1000's of mortices. Personally i'd go for a decent dowelling jig over this creation, which I know has been around a long time but really is an overly complicated piece of junk. Dowels are quicker more flexible in their use and way cheaper and id say as strong in alot of situations as a Domino.
    Sorry I forgot, no dust extraction. Kreg and their pocket hole do-dad cottoned on pretty quick that drilling alot of holes makes an unholy mess.
    I'll close by offering this warning say you make a simple cabinet with three tenons per side your four sided box just required you to drill 120 holes, not to mention as you need to clamp the workpiece so you can clamp on the jig some pretty fancy work holding devices and about $5 in tenons. Do you really expect to have to put everything in a vice that you want to joint?
    If you cant afford a Domino then get a good dowelling jig and a fixture to make mortices with a router.

    these are pretty cool, but i dont see how this would be any better than just using a normal dowel jig. it works fine, but it seems like more effort than normal dowels.

    • @MakeSomething
      @MakeSomething  2 роки тому

      Stronger than dowels but in many cases strength is overrated. I find dowel joinery can be very frustrating during glue ups because you have so many things to line up at once. But yes, dowel joinery would work in most cases.

    Love your video, I got a question for ya. I’m making a shelf for the laundry room above the washer and dryer. It’s going to be 30” over the top loading washer then down 10” and then 30” over the dryer. This will be made from ¾” Oak. This will be around 8-9” deep. I want miter cuts so the “flow” of the grain will be uninterrupted. Could I use this beadlock pro jig or should I use the corner key doweling jig? Or is there anything else that would make a strong joint at the miter cuts. I’m somewhat new and it seems like every project I’m learning something new. Thanks for your videos, they’re teaching me quite a lot.
    Thanks, Pat
