It's not the testosterone that is attacking the follicle, but rather the inflammation caused with changing skull mass as we age. This tightening of the skin and blood vessel constriction causes testosterone to convert into dihydrotestosterone to respond to the inflammation. So as our skulls increase in mass as we age, the more dihydrotestosterone we will produce and regrettably kills off our mane. The thing I hate about testosterone is it is giving me hair in places I don't want as I age, like on the ears, beard, etc. Wish there was a way to change human biology to avoid these unwanted changes as we age. The reason women often bald differently from men is their skulls change shape differently from men as they age, thus women will more commonly see a Christmas tree pattern of balding on the top of their head whereas men more commonly get the balding in the temples and vertex regions. Topical Minoxidil is disgusting though and makes the hair look thin. I'd say go for the oral if you want your hair to look less thin and sweaty.
Hello Dr Ashley. I watched your informative video. In what city is your practice? Also what about 3% or 5% Redensyl instead of or along with minoxidil for regrowth? Thank you
Yeah, I can remember having so much leg hair as a teenager that it was stressful, but now there's barely any hair there at all! I've gone years without truly shaving my legs, when I use to have to shave it every week or so for me to not have to have it completely covered in hair.
How much is too much testosterone? I was having extreme fatigue & lack of motivation, so I am on a low dose which significantly improved the quality of my life. I felt like my hair was thinning so I started a hair supplement which is helping, but how do I know if my hair was thinning from extreme damage (bleach & perm) vs taking the testosterone?
You’re so lucky you only have to explain it and do not have to have it. 😔 We don’t have this in our family. Literally no one as far back on both sides as we’ve looked. No hair loss for anyone. Especially my moms side. She has no siblings but she has super thick hair at 69. Her mother and her mother’s mother and her mother….(including all siblings down this line) All thick hair!! So if it’s not genetic and you have LOW levels of this hormone than how can I have it??! (Devastated as I just got the news last month) 😔 (fathers side has no hair loss either)
Started hrt pellets switch from bio identical cream. At first it was ok. Second pelket she increased testosterone and have lost so much hair. Im using spirinolactone and finasteride nothing happening. Minoxidil made my heart race and topical made sores
Hi Dr Ashley, what a fantastic teacher you are! Such simple explanation to follow. I had a question, what do you think about redensyl as a substitute for minoxidil for hair growth?
Hi Dr. Ashley. I was diagnosed with TE after an illness and major stressful incident and began shedding like crazy 6 months ago (still shedding more than normal) I am not seeing any growth improvement and I have both diffused loss and a widening of my part. Would minoxidil help or hurt this? A PA at the derm prescribed me an off label Latanoprost (usually for glaucoma) but it hasn’t done anything. Also, love your channel!
Is the testosterone from body fat??? If pcos then?? How is the pcos producing more hormones which ones? Also all family is fine on mom's side .. her dad was bald
Question, Should I apply the minoxidil on washed scalp ? I apply minoxidil in the mornings. For application in the evening, is it ok to apply on the unwashed scalp (carrying morning’s minoxidil)?

I have seen some people get good results with PRP however it such a new procedure that there is not really good statistics and can be a very objective finding. I think we will know more in the next couple of years when people put more studies out. For androgen alopecia the best thing is to prevent more hair loss.
So from August to October I took a workout supplement that had vitamins in it that were testosterone boosters. (I am female) I stopped taking it in October once I realized that. Starting in October till now I have lost an insane amount of hair. At least 500 a day. My pony tail has become super thin. My hair loss is all over the scalp. I see tiny hairs growing but they look so thin and fragile. Could these supplements have caused androgenic alopecia? I also experienced extreme stress from March to August. So I'm also wondering if it could be T.E.
Fast hair loss that is more widespread in a small time frame is consistent with TE. If a person intakes testosterone it would depend on how much they absorb. Also if a person gave sensitivity to it then theoretically it could if it is absorbed enough.
I take this combined with Rogaine and a hair, nail, and skin vitamin. It seems like I'm having regrowth. I'm not holding hope though. I've experienced this for 20 years, it seems to regrow for some time then it falls out again.

Hi, Dr. Ashley. Please tell me, if a woman's testosterone level is higher than normal will she certainly have AGA? Or do hair follicles have to be sensitive to it? Women in my family have good hair , mother's brother has problems. I went to trichologist, who after examining different areas of my head told me it wasn't AGA, it was TE. My ferritin and vitamin D was low, TCH normal. I'm taking supplements now and hair falling went from 400-500 when I washed it to 130. However I tested for testosterone just recently and my levels were 0,77 ng/ml. (Women after 16 should be 0, 75?) I also have acne, oily skin, but no other signs of high testosterone. So does high testosterone = AGA, or is it more complicated? I'm stressing and feel depressed about it(
People with AGA, the hair follicle will be sensitive to testosterone however have slow loss of hair and thinning of the hair Vs TE have a lot of hair loss happening at once. Your hair seems to have fallen out a lot all at once if that helps at all. It seems like you are doing the right things. I hope it gets better. It will take time.
@@jajarounette95 Better. Approximately 50 hairs fall when I wash. But I lose short hairs and have seen no regrowth yet/ I don't know if short hairs falling is common for TE. It's 8th month since I noticed the problem. Do your short hairs also fall? My eyebrows also fall, but thank God it's also better. It went from 7-15 daily in September to 0-7 now.
Finasteride works best for men since it can stop the process of converting testosterone to another form which affects the hair follicle. It has not been shown to really help on women. Minoxidil is really the only proven med in women however it would have to be used forever in androgen alopecia
Usually women with hair loss due to the testosterone even lowering it will not help because the hair follicle is sensitive to the testosterone. using medications to help stop the hair loss is the only tx we really have that is proven at this time
