    Hi Dr Ashley. Thank you so much for such an informative video. I was diagnosed with this today after spending a few months in disbelief and embarrassment that I was losing hair. I finally plucked up the courage to see the doctor because fear creeped in that I might become completely bald if I just left it and this was adding to my existing stress. Just bite the bullet and see your doctor to put your mind at rest. Now to work on reducing stress... Thanks Dr Ashley.

    • @doctorashley994
      @doctorashley994 3 роки тому +10

      In Telogen effluvium people should not have the hair fall out after stopping minoxidil unless they have another bout of TE. With androgen baldness aka male/female pattern balding this is from testosterone attacking the hair follicle so the hair follicle with always be susceptible to it so when stopping minoxidil it will cause balding to continue.

      NOOOOO!!! Of course not!
      What is telogen effluvium? It's often due to stress, in example. NOT and never due to DHT!
      Male Pattern Baldness is due to DHT, and thus once you stop minoxidil, it CAN fall out again, due to DHT!
      But with Telogen Effluvium, the hairs have fallen out due to (in example) major stress events.
      1. Male Pattern Baldness kills the hairs on scalp;
      2. Telogen Effluvium makes the hair on scalpgo into sleep mode. You may re-activate them, if they do not regrow back after a while naturally, with minoxidil 5% and/or dermarolling 0.5mm. And stop using these things once the hairs have regrown back, cause TE has nothing to do with DHT which is a lifetime problem, and TE NOT!

    Hi doc quick question. I have seborrheic dermatitis that I manage with Nizoral. If I don’t use nizoral my whole head is in scabs and itches. My hair over the course of a few years has gotten really long to my bum and thick, but I have thinning around the sides of my head and on top of my head. My part is probably the same as yours here in this video, which compared to where I was, is a significant difference and It’s progressively getting wider. Would this be considered TE or just a side effect of having seborrheic dermatitis? I wish I knew how to cure it but sadly I don’t. I ended up having seborrheic dermatitis after a hairstylist nightmare and my scalp was bleach burned off. Thanks! Plz reply.

    Thanks so much for this! question - I noticed sudden hair loss about 8 months ago and i started using minoxidil (couldn’t see a derm) anyway within a month i saw crazy growth and when I saw a derm she said it def looked like TE. For the last two months, however, I’ve been losing crazy small hairs?? Which has never happened before & im still using minoxidil. My hair btw is extremely thick and I’m like 20% away from normal density. Any idea? I got crazy vellus growth on my neck/face from minoxidil so i wonder if it grew the same on my scalp and now it’s shedding bc it’s not really strong/getting minoxidil (which I’m slowly weaning off of starting this week). My derm said that sometimes hair loss can’t easily be categorized into a bucket & didn’t think it was AGA. Thoughts? It’s driving me nuts! I lose so many.
    (For context: I had severe stress, depression, over processed/burnt hair and a vitamin d level of 7 before I noticed my hair loss - no miniaturization)

    • @doctorashley994
      @doctorashley994 3 роки тому +1

      My only thoughts could be with chronic TE a person can have recurring hair loss vs when using minoxidil it causes some hairs to switch from telogen to Anagen and that hair will fall out when this happens vs having androgen allopecia and those were the miniaturized hairs that are falling out with the minoxidil use. Make sure the minoxidil is completely dry before bed because it will get on your pillows and cause it to spread to your face/neck or consider a head wrap.

      Dude, you can stop using it once the hairs have regrown back. don't listen to ignorant people, be it so called laymen!
      I had telogen effluvium for a good 3, 4 years. HAir diffused all over scalp (side scalp, mid scalp, crown, hairline, side hairline, temples etc.) After taking minoxidil 5% twice or once a day, doing scalp massages and 0.5mm dermarolling - and removing all stress with meditation/yoga, I started getting all my hairs back in max a month! And I stopped, all hairs have stayed thick and dense for years now!
      When you have Male Pattern BAldness, yes, then it might fall again because of the hormone DHT! But if you have Telogen effluvium, you might need to stimulate your sleeping hair follicles to grow back again by using in example minoxidil or dermarolling, or iron/zinc if you need them. And since TE has NOTHING to do with DHT, you don't lose your hairs again after stopping minoxidil.
      With Male Pattern Baldness, the hair follicles dies.
      While with Telogen Effluvium, the hair follicles go in to sleeping phase, sometimes for even years. But eventually it will be healed, be it by helping stimulating them with i.e. minoxidil, or be it naturally.
      This person soniyah 8202 is very ignorant and pretty silly! I mean how long you have to wait, 2, 3, 4, 5 years or more?! Of course not! And thus you need to stimulate the follicles to grow back AGAIN, and then you can stop using the activator serum (i.e. min).

I try to eat healthy and I take vitamins, in aug 2019 I had a concussion not sure if that is why the process is taking longer for me.I also had my hormones, iron levels ect tested all came back fine. I just spent an hour crying! I had TE 2020 when I first found out about my Graves’ disease. It stopped after 6 months, 2021 my hair grew back a lot, not fully but it was great! Beginning of 2022, I started losing hair, and still losing. My thyroid is under control, diet is great, I take daily vitamins, only thing I could think of is I had COVID in December…I feel hopeless, all the hair I grew back is now gone. My new Derm says she doesn’t think it’s TE, but she barely even pulled my hair, and she pulled at the scalp. I’m scared it could be alopecia, but I’m almost certain it’s TE. My concern with minoxidil is I’ve heard once you stop using it, your hair will begin falling again…what do you think about this ?

      @@prometheus6853 Bullshit! I'm a doctor and that's not true! Because telogen effluvium is NOT caused by DHT, but due to stress in example. and thus the hairloss will be temporary and not permanent. And thus, it will regrow back eventually. But you can stimulate it with minoxidil, and once the hairs are grown back, you need to stop! Hairs will stay on the scalp, since it has not to do with DHT (which is the cause of hairloss called Androgenetic Alopecia.)

    • @MiaMia-px5xo

      No Kat, you CAN stop minoxidil after hairs are grown back. PERIOD! The hairs fall out to people with Androgenetic Alopecia aka Male Pattern BAldness, Telogen effluvium has NOTHING to do with androgenetic alopecia, which is mainly caused by DHT hormone. Telogen effluvium is due to stress, in example, and often it stay for years (also called chronic telogen effluvium) and by using minoxidil or dermarolling 0.5mm, you can stimulate the hair follicles to grow back. After they are back, ofc its better not to stress much, and you can stop using minoxidil.

    Thank you doctor!!! I just received my diagnosis from my scalp biopsy. I am in the catagen-telogen phase and they suggested Telogen Effulvum, androgenic alopecia, or areta (which I ruled out because I don't have circular balding). I thought the biopsy would indicate whether it was FPHL or TE as they are treated very differently. I feel as though I've had a few traumatic stressor including the pandemic which has hit finances so I believe it to be TE. So my question: what does scalp biopsies tell us about hair loss? Can it determine between the genetic and the traumatizing?

      Kendra Morgan Official the scalp biopsy would be more to rule out an inflammatory or scarring conditions like alopecia areata but we wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell the phases of the hair growth. TE can be diagnosed by history and if someone has experience a stress then had hair loss or chronic hair loss associated with multiple stressors.

In August I started noticing a lot of hair loss up to November, calmed down in December and then started losing hair again up to now. I have small thin hairs falling as well as long normal hairs. I grew these hairs in August-November when I was very stressed out due to my hair fall. I know losing short hairs is common in TE when it lasts a long time, but I do have some thin new hairs I am slightly concerned with, just like you are. I have experienced shedding, which I was told it was normal from Finasteride, but my hair is 3 times worse and I see no significant hair regrowth whatsoever after 5 months. The shedding has slowed in the last few weeks but I felt like it accelerated and made my condition progress instead of stagnating.

      TE does not cause miniaturization of the follicle. It will take a while to notice the hair growing back because it takes a while for it to actually grow. If your hair never grew back in some of the places then I would think about androgen alopecia. It is very possible that you could have had TE and some androgen alopecia. It was diffuse thinning but I noticed my bangs area seemed thinner. I have noticed a TON of new short hairs sprouting everywhere, especially when I part my hair in the middle.
    However, I have noticed that (I think) I’m losing some of the new hairs. Is this normal as my body gets back on track?
    I am so worried this could be AGA. My grandparents all in their 90s have full heads of hair. My parents and sisters and aunts and uncles literally all have extremely thick hair. Not one single person male or female in my family has thinning.
    I have seen two dermatologists who have done pulls tests that were positive and didn’t notice any thin/bald spots and diagnosed me with TE based on that + my history.

No female in my family had hair loss so I’m confused if the iron level is causing this . Mind you I’ve had low iron for quite a while but haven’t experienced hair loss until maybe 3 years ago I noticed it was shedding like crazy. My doctor wants me to get better control of my iron before I see a dermatologist to see if I have female pattern hair loss. Most of my hair loss seems to be front hairline receding

    • @doctorashley994
      @doctorashley994 3 роки тому

      I think it it a very good ideas to get the ferritin normal. Your body used iron to make new cells so it is essential in the growing process. If you has any added stressor your body may have experienced TE worst since the ferritin is low already. I think it is too early for derm because they will probably ask why the pcp send you before the ferritin level goes to normal. Once your pcp has ruled out the causes then it would be appropriate to see a derm. Goodluck with the hair growth process. If you notice scarring after hair loss then this can be much different than TE.

    Hi. I am now in my month 7 of Telagon Effluvium. I started to see some re growth and I think that I do not lose that much hair as 7 months ago. Is that the end of loosing hair? Last year, on spring I didn’t have my period for almost 4 months and I lost 15 kg in 3 months. Also I was very stressed because of school and I also adopted a dog last year so it was very stressful to teach the dog every thing. Is that why my TE started? Thank you for your answer.

      Miky Tan this can happen at any age. I would take your doctors advise. Make sure to be vigilant about what may have caused the telegenic effluvium and not to worry to much about how it is going to grow back so you can prevent further episodes. Everyone is different so I can’t exactly say if it will be the same thickness. Goodluck, I know it can be pretty stressful!

      When a person uses minoxidil it can stimulate the hair to grow. Make sure you it is TE before stopping. if Androgen alopecia then hair will fall out again after stopping minoxidil.

      Yes, very true.
      I wouldn’t use it all over my scalp. It’s great to cover up a single small ball spot.
      I used it around my temples for a little while. Works like magic, now. I stopped and my hair gradually looked the same before i started the product. Be careful where you use it also. It penetrates the skin. Since I used it on my temple I started to notice “ peach fuzz” growth on my foreheard.
      So glad the hair fell out when I stopped using it.
      Long story short ; I wouldn’t recommend.

      If you use minoxidil for androgen allopecia (where testosterone basically attacks the hair follicle) you have to use minoxidil forever to keep the hair follicle growing. If you use it with telogen effluvium -the chronic TE then it could help the hair grow and the hair should not fall out after.

  • @rosegenesis8431
    @rosegenesis8431 3 роки тому +2

    This is not good advice. If you use steroid products, the second you stop using it,the hair falls out and everyone including these companies that make this,say that. So imagine the stress you put yourself through when you spend a bunch of money on this stuff and then stop and think you’ve stimulated your hair follicles and then all the sudden you experience hair loss AGAIN and go through that heartache AGAIN. Horrible advice. Also these steroids disrupt the thyroid which causes EVEN MORE destruction. Horrible horrible advice. Go see a holistic doctor. You’d rather have your hair and expose yourself to steroids and cause thyroid issues and even more hormone imbalance? I am not making any of this up. If anyone is curious,look it up and you will see that that’s exactly what happens. Look up why people stopped using it as well. I don’t mean to sound like a B but I am experiencing hair loss and I don’t want others to follow this shit advice and cause even more hair loss due to stress about why this messes you up down the line.
