- After a steep learning curve I finally was successful in finishing the construction of my Waterfall Wildlife Pond! I was stunned at the beautiful visitors. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I did.

Here I am a growing man, watching another growing man play with water.
Yep but we never get tired of being fascinated with water no matter what the age right?
My mother was awarded for her services to ornithology in our area of Queensland Australia. I had been birdwatching with her for many years, taking in the environment birds live in. What you have done here, the effort put in, the hard slog is totally worth seeing the positive impact on your local birdlife. I like to see what we attract into our garden with our bird feeders, it's a joy. I appreciate your effort and dedication.
Kerry this is so encouraging. Thanks ever so much! I LOVE QLD. My favorite state in all of OZ. I have had the joy of traveling there for many months. Favorite QLD sighting I think would be Palm Cockatoo in FNQ. Favorite other sighting. A flock of Princess Parrots in the Gibson desert. Fortunately everything filmed. I absolutely love remote QLD country areas. I have visited Cunamulla now twice. Both times I have filmed Major Mitchells. Wondering what part of QLD you are from.

Thanks very much Rosey. The pond is inundated with migrant white-crowned and chipping sparrows these days. Saw a good sized flock this morning.

Don- Your saga of the pond is an excellent example of perseverence and triumph over adversity. Great work! I could easily watch 20-30 more minutes just devoted to footage of visitors to the pond, avian and terrestrial. You should do a video just on that.

I'm in Tucson.....you have a beautiful piece of desert with nice vegetation. I am blessed with the same and it's so relaxing to sit outdoors and feast my eyes on the entire flora and fauna activity...soon it will be wild desert flowers everywhere.....thanks to my wife and her seeds.

Beautiful pond. loved seeing the birds. For those of you who don't have much water or funds or time to make a pond you can attract birds and other wildlife with shallow pans and a rock in it so small animals can get out. You may have to add water a couple of times a day. I did this when I was in the country e still doing it in the court yard of the apartment building where I live in Cochise Co. You will get many birds with this simple idea.
Wanda I can relate entirely. I use to have a shallow tupperware container I used last year before I built this. You have to change the water out often of course and top it up on hot days etc. But it definitely attracts birds!

Yep just this evening a flock of Scaled Quail were jostling with each other to drink. The little pond just keeps on giving.

I have a bird pond , made it out of old swimming pool liner. Scrape bottom of pond with broom catch green algae, Algae increases hotter it gets. Made a sign ,Desert Wateren Hole.

Please let us know how water consumption (due to evaporation) is! I've always been skiddish of doing a pond here for this reason. - Also, I see that many pond builders will insert a bit of plastic mesh so that beneficial bacteria has a lot of surface area to grab onto so that they can clean the water for effectively. Might be worth looking into if the water starts getting scummy.
Ghost this is a very insightful question and I can understand why you might be skittish about this for sure. Currently even on hot days it goes down about 2 inchs per week. I simply top it up. Some people eat out at restaurants I purchase/supply water to my pond. grin. It would go down more if I didnt have it placed in the shade for a good part of the day under the mesquite. It's about 30 in deep so that helps prohibit things from being scummy etc. You will notice its shallow structures that tend to be more scummy as a rule I think. Currently mine has been in operation for a few months and I am surprised at how little algae (scum) there actually is. Also I plan on continuing to drain and replace the water at least once or twice per year. For me the pond is worth it. Of course many might not want that level of commitment but for me the wildlife/birds it brings is definitely worth it.
