I wanted something more, I want to build something cozy, make it beautiful inside and out, and have a family. Make technology a little luxury instead of it being so intrusive in my life. I find you so inspiring, I hope I get there one day.

You are not there to live other people's expectations. I enjoy both of your videos and am very fond about your wife's channel. We all can find our little nature islands, no matter how often and how intense, just nobody can make me do the first step. I have to do myself. Hi Dave, I found your channel through your wife's channel. When I was a teenager my family lied in an original log house from the 1800's. It was all one room, except for a small back porch. It had a bar that separated the kitchen from the rest of the cabin. We had an area for the dining table and across from that was a tiny living area. the rest of the log house was sleeping area. All six of of slept there. My sister and I shared an army bunkbed and so did my 2 brothers. My parents had their bed in the back corner. At night when we went to bed we all talked to each other. We had an outhouse in the back by a small barn where we had a milk cow and chickens. We cooked on an old cook stove and heated the log house with a wood heater. We only had cold running water from a well. The old modern convenience we had was electricity. It may not be "remote living" for some people, but until you live it yourself you can't judge. We grew very close as a family when we lived there. We washed out close in the back yard with an old wringer washer my dad hooked up with batteries. We ung our clothes on the clothes line. I don't regret my parents decision at all for moving there when our home burned in a fire. For showers/baths, the kids had showers at school after P.E. My parents bated in galvanized tubs we used with the wringer washer. It was a simple time in our lives we all remember fondly. :o)

that took my breath...you've experienced what many will not. my family life: we did have a bigger house: but so old; but i loved it, with the open fire in lounge and coal range in kitchen. for me being such a small child: having the long drop down bottom of section past the house and orchard: seemed like eternity to walk there and fairly freaky sometimes; when the creatures scattered about in trees and ground, branches scratched the walls and windows, but that is the way it was. my parents, us, and often others and our dog all lived in that house which still amazes me to this day how we coped. mum had a large vegetable garden so we ate healthy, farmer either sold, gave us fresh milk and my brother and i caught a duck...more don't have to live in whatever shape fancy expensive house when your life can be as happy or happier in homes we had.

In the 80's, my grandma lived by herself in the mountains about 15 minutes outside a very small town called Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal at the time was considered really remote for those of us living 50 or 60 miles away near Washington D.C. To me, it was remote enough. At night it was super quiet and no light pollution from any city, so you could see all the stars in the sky. My grandma had one neighbor in a house right next to hers, but the next neighbors were a quarter mile down the road. She had electricity and running water (from her own well), but she stocked up food to limit her trips into town. She used to freeze most of her food to make it last. So, my grandma wasn't "off the grid" or living as a caveman, but it was simple enough and remote enough so she could enjoy the benefits, but still get to town in 15 minutes if need be. I think most people can do the same as well. You don't have to choose between city apartment living or a Survivor man type of lifestyle. There are many ways to live and find your own happiness.

Hey Dave, I stumbled upon your videos by chance and I really enjoy them. I do tv broadcasting for a living and the quality of your videos are really on point. They don't have very intricate shots or fancy editing but their simplicity and framing are really good. Most videos like yours on UA-cam don't have a decent sequence, editing, frame work, and VO's.. your narration is outstanding.. You should really be proud of your work, not to mention your craftsmanship.. pretty amazing to watch.
Bottom line is that whatever you're doing you're doing cause it gives you joy and happiness and that's the way you want to do it, who really cares about what everyone else thinks.
I know how much work it is to put those videos together.. I hope you make a lot of money with those.. keep up the good work.

I'm new to you and your wife's videos. Loved watching them all. I like being outdoors. I like getting creative and building with wood - it keeps me sane in a largely insane world being able to do just those little things. Your honesty and capacity for the graft, to get you where you are, is more than evident to ANYONE who has even the SLIGHTEST appreciation of what you guys have worked so hard to achieve.
Consequently, I was literally laughing my head off - when I wasn't shaking it in utter disbelief that is - that there are clearly, genuine eejits (...I'm Scottish but please don't hold that against me) out there, who would take offence at how you cook bacon and eggs! Honestly? They're obviously watching the wrong content. ANY negative comment on what you guys are doing defies any reasonable logic - so to them I would just like to say, 'Wobble off and renew your subscription to My 600Ibs Life'.
But exceptionally well done brother in answering the brain donor comments.
Keep up the great work and content.

I'm not going to lie if you start with nothing I mean we started with a garden shed and a couple very primitive hand tools and that's it and if you start with nothing it is very hard indeed but it doesn't have to stay that way and if you have a little money it doesn't even have to start that way

You can simplify your life without going to the extreme, to be totally off grid, unless it becomes necessary. To me, the key is preparing, testing and being ready if/when it comes to that point. Until that happens, I intend to enjoy my creature comforts, since there's no reason not to.
I'm a 70 yr old, female, living in northern Mi on wooded acreage that has a mobile home, pole barn, and shed on it (I've also added a small travel trailer). I have two wells on my property, but also have earth straws to be able to turn them into hand pumped wells (if no electric) and a river nearby. To me, this is heaven on earth and I love it! I'm in good health, but not dumb enough to think I can handle building a cabin on my own, so I chose other ways to fulfill those needs. (I have a 50 yr old son, but he knows mom likes to do things on her own.) I bought this property a year before I retired in 2019 (took me 4 years to find the right place and I paid cash) and sold my site-built house in 2020. I periodically shut everything down for a few days or so, to test my systems, to see what needs tweaking and I see any disruption in power as an opportunity to do the same. I have backups for my backups and I mix modern backups, such as solar, power stations, generators, chainsaws and propane, with old school backups, such as oil, kerosene, charcoal, handsaws and wood. Some of my preps are over 100 years old and still work as intended.
Some people will never get it, no matter how it's explained to them, but for those of us who do get it, my hat's off to you!

Some people don't really know that "Off-Grid" is commonly also about hybrid and other sources, such as gasoline generators, propane-butane cooking bomb, kerosene lamps for lighting, wood heating from the adjacent forest ..., just Off-Grid it represents everything that does not use the connection to engineering networks. This is the definition of "Off-Grid." Home photovoltaics with all accessories must also be bought in the store at a relatively high price, which we justify to our wives with a kind of return. Off-Grid is not about the need for poultry behavior, the need to grow vegetables, the ban on buying food, tools, technology, etc., but it is about something completely different. You explain this well to uninformed people in the video.

Ive watched several of your video's and really enjoy them. Thank you for that. And I want to say you've got it spot on talking about off grid living. 'Off Grid' is a term that popped up about 30 years ago and all it meant at 'that' time was to be disconnected from the Grid... the power Grid. That's what the Grid is... It is the system of electricity that flows thru the US from sea to shining sea. Then 'off grid' popped up in some movie phrase and then off grid became a term for removing yourself completely from civilization. People have their own definition of off grid so you see, you describe it perfectly and those commenters that throw all the negativity your way need to grow the F up. They have no idea.. Off Grid does not mean total self reliance... Total self reliance is total self reliance.

Hello... I am from Belize and I live in a small Village called Pueblo Viejo. I speak Mopan Maya, Kekchi Maya, Spanish, Creole and English. There are many villages in Belize where there is no Electricity and we use lamps or small kerosene bottle lamps. Our village is one of many places without electricity and we are completely off-grid. We do not have cellphone service, internet, cables to watch movies or shows, and we dont own many electronic things at home. I have a cellphone yes but I only use it when I come to work. And from where I work to where I live is about 4 hours driving and that is where electricity is located and service for my phone. What you are doing is amazing and I am very very happy to see that someone with opportunities in life tends to experience how I live daily. Our house is almost the same as that cabin. But in this world, you can never satisfy anyone. There are so many ignorant and negative people who do not care of the sacrifice, the effort that you are doing to build and share something for them to learn or enjoy. They will always have something to say and it just make me sick . But I am going to tell you that what you are doing is so inspiring. Don't listen to some negative people they just want attention and if they don't like your channel they should just keep their comments to themselves. Keep entertaining us. Thank you for all the videos. God bless you and give you strenght for your future projects. Chao.

I love what you and your wife are doing. I lived in the campground in Fairbanks the summer of ‘82 with my husband & 2 small boys, 4 & 7wks old. We had come from north ID and wanted to make a go in AK. My husb got construction work the day after we got there. I helped clean the campground bathrooms to pay the $8 a day camp fee. I made homemade cinnamon rolls at night in our 16’ trailer while my family slept to sell at the Tanana farmers market on Wed & Sat. We saved $50k that summer and were able to buy a lot off Badger Rd in Northpole. We lived in the area til ‘87 when we moved to the lower 48 to be near my ill dad. We had 3 sons by then. And they all loved AK living. All the best to you and your wife & family. Both of your channels are awesome!

Andrew Jackson, you are right. Then you have these idiots who have no idea but what they see in movies. They could no more survive a week or more off grid, most would be lucky to get a camp fire started with a box of matches, let alone cook over one.
Cast iron is great, if you don't have to pack it on your back and if you did you would be giving it a toss pretty quick. Living in a completely remote area like they envision, is a full time job in it self, from day light to dark in a lot cases.

Off grid is noone knowing where you are and being disconnected from society, and institutions. It has nothing to do with cooking on a wood stove or building your own home. A multi millionaire could privately contract a team of builders blindfold them fly them somewhere remot and have them build a mansion, that has its own power, water supply, sewage, satellites for phones and wifi, nstural gas drills, etc basically all modern amenities, blind fold them and fly them away. Then fly their helicopter out there by themselves, and that would be more off grid than anything this man has done.

Excellent. My son recommended your site about a week ago and I'm glad he did. I got "infected" with back-to-the-land fever in the early 70's and did a lot of reading but in the end life took me in a different direction. The idea never left me though. Now, at the other end of life, my son and his family have picked up some land and we are all going to take some time to build a conventional cabin this summer. Exciting. I was not troubled by the stove and so on. I understood what you were doing. There's no way I could go 100% off grid. But homemade energy? Definitely. I might add that what my early obsession with the back to the land thing gave me was many years of satisfying gardening with many successful seasons. Canning, drying and freezing my produce, and building a garden shed, mulch bins and so on.

Just know Dave, that their opinions do NOT define You or who you are as a person. When they can’t find anything wrong with you, they create it. Their judgments does not define who you are, it defines who they are! I never waste my time trying to explain who I am to those that are committed to misunderstanding me, because their opinions are not my reality-I know the Truth!* So many assume, yet so little know. Just know that my friend. That is one thing I’ve had to acknowledge & accept about putting myself out there on Social Media; you’re always going to get a couple of haters, or people that misunderstand you. Unfortunately, it happens to everyone; even to the kindest-most humblest people. I built a off grid cabin in the woods. I didn't have to buy the land i belong to a co-ops club and Several people helped build it. It's the thing I am most proud of. Wood stove, propane stove, solar panels and Honda generator. It's nice being part of a small community people helped me with a tractor with a backhoe and a bucket. It was a great experience and I live in it for six months a year. But during COVID-19 I stayed in it for 18 months. Great channel good advice.

Being off grid is a learning curve.
When I first started growing food, my family would have starved the first year...now I can grow food all year, in a real winter with freezing temps. And it's saved me a lot of money growing all my own greens! Market greens go bad so fast in those plastic tubs, I was always throwing lettuce away, no matter how diligent I was at using it. Now I pick as needed.
Everything I learn, adds to my ability to one day be able to live off the grid, if I had to.
When it becomes necessary...you will be readier than you would otherwise. There are a lot of people that will never "get it" no matter what you show them. Keep sharing your progress for the rest of us to see and learn!

They turned most of the backyard into raised bed gardens with a tiny greenhouse and a small chicken coup. They started riding their bicycles more than driving, they started buying things from second hand stores close enough to ride their bikes to. They seem happier than before.

Recently found Brooke's channel by accident, and am starting to consume your content as well. It makes me sad that you felt the need to make this video - people can be idiots (especially in comment sections on the internet). I grew up on 40 acres - we weren't off grid but certainly were self-sufficient outside of power and sewer. I miss the hard work of that life (most of my adult life I've worked corporate gigs), and your guys' content is motivating me to buy land and build (def need to hire that out for the most part) and get back to being more self-sufficient than I am today. Thanks for sharing what you guys do and how you live - I'm envious and admire it all at the same time.
