Off-grid Propane Challenge So much to Learn

- I had determined what items I wanted to run with propane but locating the tank in the right place left me having to decide on whether to move it once it had already been placed on the property. Most importantly I solidified what I would or would not use this 250 gal tank for.
I have been taken off guard and surprised by youtube subscribers wanting to donate to help me develop my property here. My belief is that such wonderful gestures shouldn’t be shunned in anyway. Can you imagine you refusing to open your presents at Christmas? I simply want to do whats right. Music by Bensound.com

My great grandpa at his 260 acre ranch had propane tank used for hot water and stove. Had a fireplace and would only heat the room he was in. Also had some portable heaters, electric blanket, long underwear! Would wear gloves and a cap to bed to keep body warmth.

Don! After watching this video I decided to go all solar and not bother with propane. The reason is that propane has to be delivered to you and so I would feel that I wouldn't be completely "off grid" if I depend on propane delivery. What's funny is the propane refrigerator, who would have thought that you could use HEAT to cool a refrigerator???
Hi Panda. Keep in mind if you dont use propane then stoves, hot water heaters etc are going to have to be from your solar electric system. Those items are very large draws. So that is why I went to propane. It would have cost several thousand more to get set up with solar that could handle everything. But its always a matter of choices. Hope this helped. When we built our new house after Hurricane Harvey, we wanted a propane range. We installed a 150 gallon tank and filled it.(89% full, max allowed) It's been over two years and we have only used about 60% of it. The range is the only thing connected. In our old house (110 year old farmhouse) we also had propane central heat. We had a 500 gallon (still got it) tank and we had to fill it 2-3 times a year.
Propane is the way to go for sure.
Build a outdoor kitchen. Keeps heat out of the house , in summer. Warms in winter, use oven for heat.
Great idea Kathy Reeves. I actually do that already but confess I cook inside if its too windy. But my "outdoor kitchen" is simply a $49.99 plastic folding table from Lowe's but its sturdy and works well.

Bill I just had to chuckle with your comment about chasing Javelinas. Priceless.... I hope your propane install goes great. I am not sure if GM services your area but they do cover a wide berth geographically. They get great ratings from customers so perhaps they might be worthwhile for you and Yvonne to check out. Fun show Don! Propane is a great gas. We use an underground tank on our place in the high desert of Northern Arizona. You can achieve a similarly fire resistant installation by erecting a wall or bern a few feet here ghee than the tank to block infrared radiation if you have a brush fire. The low brush in your area can be very dangerous in a wildfire. Most problems with propane tanks in a fire are caused by the heat (infrared light) and not by a close by flame itself. When heated, the tank will eventually vent propane which will eventually ignite making your very own large scale blowtorch! We want to echo warnings about Javalina - they are unpredictable and can be vicious . Good luck!

If you wanted, you could use propane lighting, in a generator, to power your car. The Amish do it all.
Chasing a javelina without a "pew pew" could be hazardous to your health & wellbeing. They can be very aggressive.

Harry Bessonett I used to run a lot for years. I entered a few road races as well but not many. I grew up running constantly and it wouldnt hurt to get back into it more. Cardio wise and health wise I could certainly do that from what I can determine at this point. Thanks for watching!

My parents used propane off grid. Had a full refrigerator and a stove running on propane. Used wood for heat.
Propane is super useful for sure.

Graeme to be honest I was embarassed that the new propane install left me not thinking clearly and I hadnt educated myself quite enough. Having said that its so encouraging to hear your words about what your Dad taught you. Very wise indeed. Yes still learning here and yep years of hiking and running including races in my 20s have had an influence on overall excellent health I suspect. Very blessed and I thank God in Heaven for super health at this point.

Yes there are always Javelinas to chase around here. Currently still trying to get a more solid Javelina proof garbage area here LOL.

Thanks for the great vid. I've had tankless propane water heaters in multiple countries and never ran into a problem. Also, I've had multiple mini-splits. You'll love how little energy they use and the fact that they are nearly silent. Keep on learning and doing.

Propane is really economical, especially for heat...
There can be times you'll want propane heat because solar can't keep up with electric demands.

You live in the desert. Why not use a Solar Parabolic Reflector trough to heat water. The concept is to build an underground tank that can hold water and rocks. You pass vegetable oil through the solar collector and pump it through tubes that circle around inside the underground tank. The water heats up and thus heats up the rocks which will hold a lot of heat for a long time. You then run the water you want to use for your shower through a coiled pipe in the underground tank and pump it to your faucet/shower. The piping systems are separated. Basically you are building a Heat Battery. With enough rock mass, you could heat your cabin all night. I would run another system of tubing/pipes that also contains vegetable oil that you can pump through a cars heater radiator inside your cabin using the 12v radiator fans to create and circulate warm in your cabin.

Yep GreenHorn. The chasing of them was just me reliving being a wild and energetic youngster. I certainly expect them to be back. Eventually I will fence the entire property but with low fencing so deer can easily hop over.

Yeah they are a yard animal for me. Recently it totally trashed my cottonwood sapling I had been babying for the last month or so. Oh well living with nature.

At 00:39 I could see a huge hole in the insulation where your propane line goes up through the floor. You need to close that hole in with a can of spray foam from the hardware store or rodents and bugs will just crawl right up that line and into your place. It's also way cheaper to go into town and fill smaller tanks. We spend $24 a month doing it this way. You pay more for that convenience.

Javalina are not the friendliest beasts, and their tusks are nasty weapons!
I would definitely recommend a shotgun with bird shot, if all you want to do is chase them off, or buckshot if they don't scare off.

Don, I have two Mini split
systems. One upstairs and one downstairs in my tiny home in Pearce/ Sunsites near the Dragoons. Summers we use the upstairs more for cool and winters the lower floor one for heat at night, when needed.
They are GREAT!!!!!

Have been living off grid in AZ desert for 18 years. Unless you are going to have 5000 watts solar and a 20KW battery bank the mini splits are not going to give you full time heating or cooling you want. Even the best use way too much power, unless you are just cooling a well insulated small space. Don't use the Little Buddy heater indoors, it causes really bad indoor air quality (high CO2 up to 5000ppm). Check out the Housewarmer VENTED propane heater at Northern Tools. That is what I have used for past 15 years. For Summer cooling evaporative coolers are the only real choice. For a good on demand propane water heater check out PrecisionTemp (high quality, but expensive) or Girard. And if you don't bake with oven, or use 4 burners just get a simple propane camping 2 burner set up.
Hi wizard1955. I hope to have 4500 watts of power. My little cottage is just that. EXTREMELY well insulated. If you check out my list of videos you will see it being insulated. Its only 200 sq ft also which is pretty small. My Big Buddy Heater has a CO2 detector right nearby but I also have my window open as a precaution. Sounds like the Housewarmer has been a good one for you. Way to go. Great tip for on demand hot water heater. Thanks.

I’ve done propane for years a little advice take it or leave it buy your tank out right because once they have you renting one no other propane place can put propane in that tank. And you can I’ll longer find the best price is for your propane or if they have someone sick you need propane you’re out of luck. Just a suggestion love your channel

I bought a 1000 gallon propane tank for my place in North West Wyoming. The reason for buying my tank is that I can shop around for the best propane price. Other wise I would be stuck buying propane from the place that I am renting a tank from.

I got a red Ryder bb gun at tsc( yes I'll prolly put an eye out) to help train coyotes and havalina to stay away. Wont hurt them at distance but enough to spook em not to come back.plus brings back memories of my childhood.
Yep I can imagine being plunked with a BB would unnerve any javelina or coyote. My impression was that the javelina was surprised and unnerved that a human chased it. But of course I am sure it will return. I will use field fence at some point and fence my entire 4 acres. Keep it low enough for deer to hop over.

Propane generator would work well for your situation and serve as back up to your future solar installation. Just a thought.

You were talking about using a T, or a splitter. I don't think you can' list your property for sale as a multi-unit when a single propane tank (or a single natural gas line) supplies both units/dwellings. There is some type of regulation. They have to have separate sources or origins, for safety, presumably. I heard this from a realtor in Colorado. This may or may not be important to you, as there is still an improved value (investment-wise and/or income-wise) in having a second unit/dwelling.

There is a season on Javelinas but I don't eat a lot of meat overall so wont bother at this point.
