Today's video begins the 2 part Whistler Upgrade Saga! I'll be attempting to upgrade through some of the Whistler builds all the way to XP RTM. Let's see how that worked out!

Ah yes, the MJD Windows curse: Saying everything is going smooth and then immediately goes something wrong.
its called the krazy ken curse
@@dessnom4333 underrated comment
@@dessnom4333 Except Krazy Ken curse is for MacOS, the MJD curse is for Windows.
@@weegeenumberone2 yea
The mjd Hardware curse
This might be a bit of a strange request, but since I'm a blind viewer of yours, and since you make a lot of history and retrospective videos, I'd love to see a video on the history of Windows accessibility, whether that's built-in or third party assistive technologies.
Many thanks for your content by a screen reader user.
That would actually be really cool! I’m not sure if that’s been covered before. Thanks for the suggestion! : )
Sorry if I'm being rude by asking this, but may I ask how you found the channel without seeing what you were clicking/tapping?
@@wafflesncatsup5323 Someone was with him?
@@zan0038 but that still doesn't explain how they'll "see a video" like their comment says. Sorry I not understand.
@@wafflesncatsup5323 You're not being rude at all. I've been searching for quite some time now to find a good resource that explains all this, and I just can't find something, so here goes. Blind people use programs called screen readers to navigate a computer. If you visit my channel, you'll find videos of me ... well me from a few years ago at this point, doing exactly that. They read objects on the screen, and they're usually tied to reading the item that has akeyboard focus, at least usually. On mobile devices, they put a cursor on the screen that surrounds whatever item you're focused on, and you can move it by touching other parts of the screen. You can then activate whatever item was just read by double-tapping anywhere. In general, we don't use mice, they just make it harder since it's quite a visual medium. I can do everything you can do on your computer with a keyboard alone. Hope that helps.
We need to appreciate how much time this guy is actually wasting for stuff like formatting, redoing some steps and trying out similar things with no result off the camera
These types of videos never get old to me.
Agreed
I believe for the first build of Whistler you need to do some trickery and launch the installer through DOS for it to actually work properly.
I love how this channel has the exceptional clipping of "OH, this is going so good"
*an error occurs*
These videos cannot get more old. Love the content Michael.
It's 3 AM and I'm watching a guy upgrading between the betas
I had sent out an email to Michael about a possible solution for most of these builds to this problem, but if it helps anyone else as well, feel free to give this comment a like and reply:
To get past the Windows Whistler Setup is Starting screen on builds that freeze at it, try going to your BIOS and disabling the ACPI feature. For whatever reason, builds 2257-2416 have a big problem with ACPI (which is the power management system) that causes the CD to hang at the blue screen Windows Setup program. 90% of the time this trick fixes the problem.
Aw hell yeah, another MJD video wooooo. Great content on everything man, will edit when I finish the full vid!
@@nickoffscript FRICK FORGOT.

YAY! I LOVE these upgrade videos!
Keep it up!
Woah! Nice Video Micheal! You always have some of the best videos I've seen! Keep up the good work!
Hey Michael! Can I suggest a video idea? I'm interested in an alternate timeline type of video on: *Where would Windows be today if Longhorn never got reset?* And that Microsoft's plans went the way they were suppose to. Longhorn was released in 2003, as a fine successor to XP. Then came Blackcomb, and then what? I'm honestly interested in this topic, and I'm surprised that this topic doesn't exist on UA-cam
2004 as of the 3-year gaps*
5:10 "So we're just going to randomly re-arrange these desktop icons in no particular order"
My OCD: "And I took that personally"
I know this video is extremely old by now, but build 2202 can in fact be bootable! I've modified the iso myself (and can send it to you if you'd like), but all you need to do is replace "i386/cdrom.sy_" with that same file from the 2211 iso
Watching this at 23 PM because i do not havr a life. Keep doing this stuff micheal
$5 Windows 98 PC, you have a contender with the most physical OS installed: Dell Latitude D610. The laptop is preparing for the long -haul- horn (strikethrough does not work 😠) for beating you.
Sports Commentator: Only if the OS installs successfully!
Also, since the partitioning takes a long time, I think it is best if you use something like a linux boot disk to quick format the drive with a FAT file system and then upgrade that to NTFS for older OSes (though I think for newer post-luna builds, you can quick format?). If you do need DOS to launch something, use Freedos (It is open source version of DOS still in development! It's format command has quick format support too)
I think the laptop is just too new to be properly supported by the older builds.
You need spaces. Yes: long -haul- horn No: long-haul-horn
@@notthatntg Thanks!
The one thing that I love is when something does not work properly and I just can't help but laugh. Always great content MJD and keep up the fantastic work!
Try upgrading through versions of Ubuntu.
Bob Pony already do that
You're never going to guess what he did
The Windows Whistler builds are my favorite to look at besides Windows Longhorn.
New favorite channel. You're like druaga1 but more organized.
4:10 Whistler Windows 2001 Professional (missed Windows Whistler 2000 Professional opportunity)
6:57 The codename Whistler at the top has the Windows Millennium Edition logo. Eurgh.
10:23 Blank Windows 2000 setup.
12:33 Again, the Windows Millennium Edition logo on a Whistler/2000 setup.
13:32 Blank Windo- WHISTLE! WHISTLE! -ws setup.
I never thought an upgrade saga could fail more than the Longhorn one
Now we go through the post-Luna builds! The next one should be for 7 development, since that has a somewhat interesting development.
Windows 2000 with no quick format i Love it
7:16 "Next we will accept this wonderful license agreement"
Not so wonderful I should note :D
Me: Gets mad when windows updates
Also me:
You should review Windows Vienna made by Vista (not the XP Vienna edition)
@@someidiot4311 It's more than just a themepack, It's now in an ISO as a fully custom OS and receiving new updates
Always when I watch MJD video, my hands want to install back Windows 2000 Professional. I miss that Windows. My favorite one. But @MJD can you make video how to install Windows 2000 on new hardware via Hyper-V on Windows 10?
Could you do a review on the Calmira XP program for Windows 3.1?
I’ve actually done one on that version and the original Calmira!
Good video👍🏻 such a shame that we never got to the windows whistler desktop in this video☹️.
Hey Michael, what happens when you launch MSN Browser from Windows 9x on Windows 10?
@Alejandro Herrera Barboza Yes .
22:44 I know this is old but that bulid works in virtual box
Can you make a slideshow of the screenshots from the faces of Windows from 3 up to the latest build of Windows 10? As a transition video to let us see how Windows changes over time? As a summary of all the history developments of the OS versions. I watched it all and it is so great. Thanks!
The bsods on both bulids is pointing to the file processor.sys
What happens when you upgrade through every version of windows memphis?
Cool ! Windows Vista developement retrospective ?
Michael is Druaga1 if he never smoked
Build 2250 was compiled on June 28th, 2000. Would you consider that to be a long time ago or fairly recent? Apparently beta builds are not guaranteed to work but for testing purposes only.
Are you going to make a Windows 10 Development History video?
Great video Michael!
You should use a DOS floppy and change the dates, to a time before the whistler expires
Go through all Windows 10 builds too
@Štefan Darvaš one build per year at least.
I mean you could try to Upgrade to Neptune from M.E
I really don't like vista but I respect people who like it
Build 2416 worked in a VM, but don't work in real hardware. I used VirtualBox
banana.ani is a cursor, but the reason it fails to copy when running Setup from DOS is because of the CD driver on the boot disk. DOS CD drivers work by creating a system device which MSCDEX can then use, and whatever name you give it becomes a reserved name within DOS just like any other system device (e.g. CON, COM1, etc.). the 95 and 98 boot disks used a device name of BANANA for the CD driver, so when Setup tries to read banana.ani, DOS recognizes it as the name of a system device and redirects the read attempt to that device instead of reading from the filesystem
the simplest solution is to just use the 98SE boot disk instead. Microsoft changed the name of the CD device to MSCD001 in 98SE, presumably because someone somewhere had a file named banana and ran into this same problem
21:11 It's just like that screen says, use Smart Drive. Find smartdrv.exe ... diskette or CD... run smartdrv and it should copy files way quicker. I would use the Windows 98 CD instead of the diskette.
Maybe try some other PC or rebuild one instead of DELL. Some ASUS/ASRock/Gigabyte motherboard, an Intel P4 s478/LGA775 or AMD Athlon/Sempron, 512MB DDR or more, AGP gfx...
You should try a different machine for the upgrade saga. Maybe the 98 PC would have a higher success rate for Whistler.
Seeing this makes me wish someone leaked an oddysey build :(
:-( too.
Why? There's hundreds of modified windows isos that attempt to replicate what oddsyesy would have looked like
Can you do a redux of the Windows Vista Development history?
Great Video!
7:22 when you do a example of jinxing yourself
And then later your jinxed
Nice video!
Iqrl not less or equal means that another file is asking windows to give access to it but windows declines . Then a fatal error is caused.
"The Windows Clean Install Saga"
Hey man can you pls help me get a windows xp pro 64 bit ISO to download I couldn't find it anywhere in the web
I know what you mean man. That kind of stuff happens to me a lot.
Alternative title- windows whistler installation annoying micheal for 35 minutes straight
Alternate Title: "Upgrading through Windows Whistler Pre-Luna Builds but Everything Goes Wrong..."
Go through all Microsoft Blackcomb builds
i have a compaq presario 1400 and it runs windows whistler beta 1 build 2267 without problems. when i installed this build, it ran it for the first time with no problems. maybe try using a different computer :/
Has to be a microsoft default driver issue for something your computer has. PCEM version could be interesting ;)
*insert Imposibru meme here* @20:39 , formats to just shy of 10.79GB, buuut~~ then Total Disk space to be about what 74GiB/76GB in total size? Somethings not right.
Banana.ani is *_not_* a driver file. It is an ANImated cursor for use in Windows themes... There's quite some difference between a driver and a cursor file... Just so you know.
FYI: .ANI are animated cursors, .CUR are still (non-animating) cursor files.
can u pls do the windows 10 update history
A bit late but I'm pretty sure the BSoDs were due to unsupported CPU.
I've always wanted to install Windows prototypes on real hardware but old computers are expensive
Windows 7 Beta Upgrade Saga?
If you would copy the processr.sys file of the first build to the broken ones, would it help it perhaps? Since that file worked, it might also then...
The real title: The Windows Whistler Upgrade Saga! (Upgrading Through the Pre-Luna builds, but Everything Went Wrong)
Can you review windows vienna (vista mod) and not xp vienna?
Yes that would be great!
Hi. Can you take a look at GMac OS? Thanks.
Good video😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Do a video of windows 1.0 beta builds
Lol only 18 dislikes 😂 This proves that almost everyone likes MJD's vids 🤣
out of curiosity does this computer have an Intel processor?
Belive it has a pentium something
Banana.ani isn't a driver, it's the banana shaped animated cursor! LOL
YESSS
Wait a sec... That's not the $5 windows 98 PC
I dont like it when my kmode exception isnt handled
Me casually having mjd curse
btw the bsod says proseser.sys thats prob why it might not be suported
Upsetting, Windows seems to not like you xD
35 seconds ago,
time for a new good video
Next NT 5.0 builds
Ah I mean I was able to install up to 2296 just fine but couldn’t do after that
yayy!
i miss windows 95 .. 98.

Windows 7
These videos are probably going to be at least 45 minutes long

Where are the windows nt update saga part 3
Try update longhorn to server 2003
Oh yes
Would you ever go live?
62nd Comment! Wow....
Not an achievement.
:(
Like I said in other video (or on Twitter, not sure now), you should do Linux upgrade fest instead (starting from some Ubuntu release supporting further upgrading, maybe Ubuntu 1 even has such capabilities?, to the max possible), you won't suffer that much like here.
there never was an ubuntu 1, the first version was 4.10 because of the naming scheme
I named my games folder software and gave it a icon of tree so my parents wont touch it
