Back in January I attempted to install a GPU in the 98 PC, and found out that the card got damaged during shipping. Well recently, a viewer generously donated another GPU! So let's try to install it, shall we?

I think you should do that video about the 64-bit Windows XP versions. That’s always confused me
I remember Microsoft had some sort of program where you could get a 64-bit upgrade of Windows XP, but I think it wasn't quite ready for production. I almost did it but when I researched it I realized there were no graphics drivers available for it for my card.
I don't think the xp 64 bit had proper directX drivers at all. A friend tried to set it up years ago and got nothing but a headache and homebrew drivers that never worked. He was in love with xp and refused to use newer windows versions, even though he spent most of his time trying to use those stupid, unofficial 13-gig "driver packs"
Windows XP Professional x64 is for AMD64 systems, while Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is for IA64 (Intel Itanium) systems.

kolibri would be a good idea because you haven't really taken a look at obscure operating systems (windows 12 is linux lite) except for reactos so i think it'd be a good video idea.

Definitely replace the HDD with an SSD. I believe there’s also a workaround to get Windows 8.1 running on SSE1 processors, so that might make for an interesting video.
whats next, windows 7 on a pentium non mmx?

SSD hype. This saga fills the hole that Druaga1 leaves when he's not uploading, thank you
i sometimes wonder if they are brothers...
hey smoker, Drua- I mean MJD here
I would definitely recommend going with an SSD rather than a CF or SD card in this case. NTFS (or any journaling file system) will eat through SD and CF cards rather quickly. Also there's the page file that would need to be taken into account. Awesome video and I'd definitely be interested in both a video on Kolibri and XP x64 and XP IA-64. :)
If you put the ssd on the 98 box don’t forget to turn off the paging file or move it to a partition on a spinny disk or you’ll kill the ssd really quick. Also 98/XP and I think Vista does not include trim support
Legit didn't know about the Windows XP 64 bit differences. Would love someone to dumb that down for me lol
Also digging the editing
XP 64-bit is literally Server 2003 with XP "theme" :)
@@paulstelian97 what theme?
@@NotJohnTanner I mean Server 2003 doesn't normally have the Luna theme or the typical Consumer side of built in programs (such as games). XP x64 has them added back in.
@@paulstelian97 that makes sence
To make it more confusing, there is Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, which is for IA-64, and has two editions: one is based on Windows XP and the other on Windows Server 2003. Then there is Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, which is for AMD64 and is based on Windows Server 2003.
You should get an IDE to SD adapter since SD cards are quite more common and are quite inexpensive than compact flash cards. Not only that, most modern SD cards have decent speeds that it would max out the old ancient IDE ATA interface and as said cheaper to get than buying an SSD and trying to use an IDE to SATA adapter.
He already received the SSD he bought, he mentioned it at the end
@@laurinneff4304 for future projects it would still be good
why michael didnt pin you

Fitting that I just upgraded the gpu in my own win98 machine. From a gefore2 mx 200 to a ATI 7500. Got the drivers from Phil’s Computer lab, great resource. Glad you got yours working finally
I used to have a working FX 5200, and Longhorn builds will usually natively have the GPU drivers installed, aero on 4074 works but can be sluggish, some newer builds have better performance. The FX 5200 is one of the better cards for easy aero on Longhorn.
The fun thing about SSDs is that they use the SATA interface, like anything from the past 15 years. It's a shame the windows 98 pc doesn't have SATA but even with an adapter, it's amazing how you can fit the latest hardware and the fastest possible drives (excluding NVMe of course) in a pc that was made years ago
nvme to sata exists, then add sata to ide :D
@@bookshelffury that's true but it won't get you any speed over a data SSD

120GB SSDs cost less than 20 Euros so please go ahesd and buy one
I have a 7200RPM HDD (500 GB), I have owned it for a while and it is still doing as much as I need it to. I doubt I'll get an SSD because I have no reason to.
That is beautiful! Hopefully we'll see more upgrade videos from you. 👍👍👍
I used to have an FX5200 gpu, then one of our local pc fixers guild told me He had an HD3650 AGP, I just had to have it, I gave him the fx5200 and an fx5600 I had laying around, best deal ever in my opinion, it's so overpowered for it being an AGP card
one of the best ones there is, only better ones are the 3850 agp and the 4670 agp
But not 98 compatible
Wait, a video without major issues? That's great! Very interested in the SSD video!
Quick recap recreation:
someone sent him an FX 5200, and it got damaged while shipping. When he asked the donator, It was apparently overclocked, so he tried to re-flash it, but he did it wrong and ended up bricking the old GPU.
I get BIOS bricks, but it's so strange that a GPU can be bricked.
Congratulations for working the Aero Theme successfully!

Task: Swap CD drive with DVD drive. Problem: Don't like black DVD drive in beige case.
Solution: Realize that you have an (almost) exact copy of this drive in beige, and install that one instead
Michael MJD: Grabbed beige drive and swapped panels with black DVD drive.
he said that the white drive was malfunctioning
Why swap the DVD drives' front covers and have an empty hole now when you just could swap the entire drive? Or is the donator drive broken?
yeah, he said that the donor drive was broken and it didn't work properly
"Four years in the making, or five- FIVE years, gosh! It's been five years since 2016"
this, *this* phrase right there - it hits hard holy cow.
snappy driver installer might be a good thing to look into for you.
From my recollection, those issues with the installer were pretty common back then. You would always get some kind of error, and then have to go online and figure out what you REALLY had to do to get it installed.
The fact that Micheal had install errors installing both the driver and Vista from CD suggests that the drive has issues. So he did the correct thing imho and tried another drive.
Here’s hoping it goes better this time :D
Thank God you finally upgraded the gpu!!! If you ever wondered why the integrated gpu caused so many problems such as low res, low colour depth images or things not displaying properly, that's because the VESA compatibility in the integrated gpu is crap!!! To put it simply, VESA compatibility allows an OS to run at resolutions higher than VGA res without graphics drivers installed. By the year 2000 most GPUs where compatible with VESA 3.0. With VESA 3 this is how you are able to see the typical Windows 7 boot screen, the "Windows is loading files.." text in higher 1024x768 res instead of 80x25 text mode and also when you boot into Windows XP or newer with no Graphics Drivers, you can run in 800x600 and higher in 16 or 32bit colour depth. Intel's graphics however where stuck on VESA 2.0 until the GMA 950 which only allows 640x480 in 4bit (16 colours) colour depth without dedicated graphics drivers. If it was up to me I would have changed the GPU on day 1 of having that PC for better compatability!! By the way your channel is awesome!!!!
You installed Vista, but at what price ?
The pc : Everything.
Hey, Michael! New subscriber here. I thoroughly enjoy your videos; they have become almost a sort of ASMR thing for me - the perfect ambient noise for my day-to-day living (I promise I mean that in the absolute best way possible, but FYI, the background jazz music isn’t helping your cause).
Among others, I saw your brief nod to Windows XP 64-bit in this particular video, and it made me wonder if you’d covered that operating system before, only to realize you HAVEN’T! I’d LOVE a full-fledged video of the XP 64-bit development (and all the included heartache) on your behalf - there was a time fairly recently in which that was my daily driver OS.
I know there’s a lot of bad blood surrounding XP 64-bit, but I’d really enjoy your showcase of that misapplied anomaly of a Windows release. Just some food for thought.
Cheers, MJD!
Yes i want to see the video about kalibroOS. Correct me if I'm wrong
I love finding old discs in drives I haven’t used in years lol. Trip down memory lane
I have that exact GPU, I found it for free at my local PC store.
Man, I love this stuff..brings back so much. My first laptop was a.. well.. kinda forgot the manufacturer. It was a odd ball I bought off a friend of mine... I remember it had a single core Intel Celeron M, 512MB DDR2 RAM, and S3 Graphics! It came with Windows XP installed.. I later upgraded it to Vista to find it didn't look as nice as other computers with Vista or 7 installed with the transparency and all.. the 64MB of VRam just couldn't do it. Tried registry edits and everything to no avail. Crazy stuff.. but I did learn that Ubuntu will allow transparency on ANYTHING... but this "Extended Life Linux" OS I got ahold of that claimed to be able to make any old computer carry out day to day functions really made the most of that system.. still wasn't enough for the larger Halo:CE maps. Haha
This PC has gotten more attention than I did my entire childhood lmao
I would recommend using a utility like Auto-Patcher for Windows 98 to ensure that your installation of Windows 98 is as updated as possible.
I just realized something, you're making your voice sound more lively so people will stop saying your voice sounds like Microsoft Sam

@mjd This vid is a party of recognition, as I did all of your upgrades myself. But I do have to disappoint you on the performance of an ssd over IDE. It did not feel any better to me than an HDD. Kind regards
These kept getting recommend to me, I decided to finally check it out and it was so worth it.👍
Looking forward to what's to come with the 98 PC. I'd love to hear more about the 64-bit and x64 editions of XP, I feel like I knew about them, but never acknowledged them lol
Yes, definitely an SSD in the 98 PC is something we want to see, even if obviously won't run at its full speed by any means. The flash card solution is only OK for older OS like Win 9x, newer ones make a lot more read/write operations, severely reducing the lifespan of the card. Very satisfying to see Aero running on a PC which doesn't even have a proper (typically AGP at its time, later PCIe) graphics expansion slot on it, I wasn't really sure whether any PCI cards existed that were good enough for that.
I'm pretty sure this is the first time something has actually worked out. Looking forward to the SSD installation!

I feel like a motherboard upgrade is just an entirely new PC at this point.
I once installed an ATI RAGE VR card in my own Gateway with Win98. Turns out the ATI integrated graphics on the motherboard were better than the card, so the card returned to my generic WinMe PC to supplant the poor Intel graphics.
This $5 PC has been a hilariously effective investment

Michael please install the most beautiful and stabled Microsoft OS ever released, to enjoy it with the GPU and drivers installed. I'm talking about Windows 2000 of course!
The first computer I built from scratch included a Geforce FX 5200 card. I thought it was a pretty good card at the time. Something about being the cheapest card at the time that would run DX9 IIRC.

And yeah, of course we want to see the Windows XP 64-bit/x64 and KolibriOS videos. Btw you should do a ReactOS video.
You should try a lite version of Windows 7, and see if ram usage is any lower. And maybe use an updated driver found on the Nvidia driver page.
