Sell Ceramics 🍵 Start a Handmade Business!

- If you want to start selling your handmade ceramics then watch this video first because today I’m sharing how to price your products, different challenges you might face, shipping tips, and more.
First, let’s talk about the advantages of starting a ceramics business. Now, I’m assuming that if you’re watching this video, then you’re already fairly skilled at making ceramics, whether that’s with throwing or hand-sculpting or your chosen technique, and that’s a skill that many people don’t have. So, you’re already in a good position to make beautiful items that others can’t make for themselves. Now, pottery is a broad category with so many different options. You can create almost anything from everyday items like mugs or salad bowls to expensive art pieces. You can make things like jewelry or plant pots or yarn bowls. Of course, you’ll be driven by your particular set of skills and passions, but just know that there is a lot of room for flexibility in the business, which is a great thing to have. So, unless art pieces are your specialty, you’ll most likely be pricing your items at a relatively affordable price point. That is, you aren’t trying to sell a $2,000 piece of fine jewelry. Depending on your items, you’ll probably be under the $150-mark, which means that your items are likely to be accessible to a pretty large audience, which is a great place to be for your business.
With that being said, there are a number of challenges that you need to look out for.

There are a lot of people now selling ‘clay’ jewelry that is made from polymer plastic clay. I think it is important to make sure your customers know the difference, as ceramics are a studio/fine art skill and not just something you cook in the oven.
While raising prices and offering lower cost shipping is a valid concept, many pieces, like mugs and smaller items, still cost at least $12 to ship in current prices. Packaging materials can cost $5-$15 or more depending on the size of the item, as well as necessary insurance to cover the price of the item, so that can be a significant addition to the item cost.
Thank you for sharing your ideas for those who are considering a startup in ceramics.
BTW, ‘raku tableware’ is not a thing, as All raku in Not food safe.
Yes, that's a great distinction and the artist should definitely let their customers know how their pieces are made.
Hi there! I make polymer clay animal sculptures and I would love to see a video on polymer clay art! Your videos are amazing!
Great suggestion! Thanks!
Shipping price is a key factor in pottery. Do you suggest having a higher price and give free shipping OR keeping a comparitively lower price and additional shipping cost? As always, thank you so much for sharing all of this valuable info. :)
Psychology experiments have shown that people are more likely to buy a product that's higher price and low/free shipping than a comparatively lower price with additional shipping cost, so I tend to favor the former strategy!
Please please please make a video on resin business. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for the suggestion!
Thank you Mei!! Been waiting for this one. Am a ceramicist and have been resisting an online shop for a while because of the packaging and shipping costs. Of course now that the pandemic is here I have begun to plan more. Don't live in the US so can't use your recommendations but will look around. TFS!!!
You can definitely do this! It would be good for you to find a group of other ceramicisits, either a Facebook group, or through a following on Instagram, that you could bounce some of these ideas off of.
I'd love it if you did shop reviews!
That's actually pretty much what I do in my A Sale A Day course. We take a look at your business (or help you start your buiness) piece by piece to make it stronger! www.creativehiveco.com/a-sale-a-day-business/

I'm so happy to hear that, Ro! Thank you so much for watching.
Hello Mei, question what’s you’d suggestion if you only sell at local farmers markets? I know the price point are more than fair, but how does one show true value? I do decorative vases and bowls with complex glaze combos.
I know lots of people who sell pottery at fairs and their price is their price. You need to price according to your time and materials. If you know your pricing is fair then it is what it is. The benefit of having people in front of you is that you can explain your process and the time and complexity involved. But if those customers are not buying, then the farmers market is not your audience.
That's so cool that she's human like us.
❤️❤️❤️
Hey is it possible to place a kiln in an apartment.. Please respond 🥺❤️
Hi! I found these links that could be helpful for you. There will definitely be risks involved so I wouldn't recommend it as much as possible.
www.reddit.com/r/Pottery/comments/ctjxh1/advice_on_tiny_kiln_in_apartment/
www.quora.com/Is-a-pottery-kiln-safe-for-a-small-apartment
Plenty of people do. At least I the UK, some kilns plug straight into the power supply without needing any adaptations to cope wthe voltage. Since they're designed for that, it out to be safe.
Hi! i hope you notice this!
Can i , buy a dollar store pot and i can change it ? by repainting, and adding design?
Thanks!
You can definitely do that, but you wouldn't be able to claim it as a handmade pot. You would call it a hand-painted pot instead.
Awesome info, Question, when a website is created for an home handmade business, do you have to show a social security number?
No, you don't need to put in a SSN to sign up for a domain or website services.
Creative Hive ok thank you, oh so my handmade items can be sold without any tax issues then?
You don't need a SSN for your website but you do need to register your business in your state and apply for a sales tax permit if you need to, and you also need to report the income you make from the website.
Best vdio
Thank you so much for watching!

I have been making slip cast ceramics for years. I worked at a small shop for years and would ike to sell some items from my home. I have the kiln, clay, and molds...and can get paint at retail prices. The hard part is shipping. Last year I had some large ceramic Christmas trees and lots of people loved them. They liked my price too, but did not want to pay shipping and if I add shipping to the cost then people do not like the prices. Any ideas on how to deal with this?
Not Christmas trees but same here. How to accommodate the packaging and shipping costs which can sometimes be as much as the item for some destinations
I wonder this as well! it is also difficult to determine shipping cost for custom orders & work that into the cost. (I include shipping in my prices)
Those people who do not understand pricing and that it actually costs to ship are not your customer. You need to market to a different audience, or try to find a cheaper shipping service.
yes good idea but you need a werry hot owen for finis your ceramic not suitable for normal home becouse around 1600 C inside so big fire hazard
Yes, though there are kilns that people set up in their basements or garages, and have them wired safely by an electician.
@@CreativeHiveCo Thats fine yes and not need central heater in the house to beouse big hot box . Aniway tis is a good idea
