I have just watched all of your recipes from Scotland and it has made me very sad that I was taken away from Scotland when I was 12 years old. I am now 77, have lived in London since, so it was good o watch your videos, I would like to thank you for reminding me of all these recipes and a taste from home. You you are so easy to watch and listen too.
I read your comment and thought I had posted it and forgotten I'd done it 😁(entirely possible these days). I love the receipes and taste of home and childhood but I also love listening, she sounds like all my female relatives of many years ago. So glad to have found a fellow (at the time) reluctant immigrant take care 🤗
Ive been looking for a recipe for stovies which i havent cooked for years. I used to cook it with mince, but have some sausages i need to use up. I was just about to give up looking when your video popped up and there and behold ! It was exactly what i remembered cooking all yhose years back, except for the sausages. Will be definitely cooking this tomorrow. Thank you so much.
I can mind when my Grannie used to make stovies when the Winter was in. They were brilliant. Also on Sunday mornings we used to have Stew, Mince, Carrots, Onions and Butter Beans, cooked in a big pot, for Breakfast, with a piece n dook (a slice of bread dipped in the gravy). Aye. The good old days. Ye cannae whack it.
Stovies never look pretty but they taste amazing, they're the best comfort food. They bring back a lot of good memories from when I was wee. My grandparents always used to make stovies and the whole family would come round. There were so many of us, gran had 9 adult children who all brought their partners and kids. Sometimes there was no room left in the house so us kids would sit out the front eating bowls of stovies in between climbing trees 😂. I live in central Scotland and this recipe is very similar to what we make but we almost always use square sausage. I've never made it in a slow cooker though but I've been wondering what that would be like. Sorry for the novel 😆
As an expat I've made my own stovies for years, they are the absolute best in comfort food, as is the Scottish tradition I've made them with what ever meat was leftover or available, in my opinion leftover Lamb roast is the best, one thing that was not addressed in the video is seasoning, stovies should be spicy, the addition of plenty of white pepper (black pepper does not give the same glow) and a couple of pinch o' salt will take care of that, you can make them on a stove top in about 45 minutes but the slow cooker is good if you want to come home to a ready made meal, I like to serve them with a side of coleslaw.
I'm from Ayrshire grew up there and my mum used to make stories and I hated it lol. But as you grow older your taste buds change and I enjoy them now. I like to add turnip in with mine with square sausage yummy 😋
All my favorite foods as an adult are things I hated as a kid. And it wasn't that I didn't TRY them as a kid, I did. And I hated them. Tomatoes (the acid burned my mouth) Mushrooms (slimy, looked like dog ticks, texture was like rubber, & they tasted like NOTHING) Chicken (the meat came off in weird strings, if you ate it on the bone it had VEINS in it, gross! And, again, it tasted like literally nothing.) These days if a recipe has chicken, mushrooms and tomatoes in it I know I'll absolutely love it.
I just found your channel. You’re a godsend! I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and I come from deep Scottish roots. It’s amazing to learn about the things my ancestors would’ve eaten. Thank you! 💕
Looks good! I've made a recipe out of my Campbell's Soup cookbook for decades. Potatoes, onions, ground beef and mushroom soup in crockpot. US here. Will have to give this a try.
I am binge watching all your videos. I really enjoy them. Im a decent cook for a beat up middle aged guy. Mostley stews and soups and chili. I will try this one. Thanks
Hi Mrs whatsfortea ….I am Dundee born and bred but live in Australia .My youngest daughter loves sausage stovies but she calls it Sausage Casserole lol .Whatever the name it,s Stovies to me
I’m from Ayrshire too and we do use square slice for stovies never made it in the slow cooker before brilliant thank you so much for sharing hugs Shelley ❤
That's how I was taught too. Now in England have to make do with sausages and flavour is not the same. Does anyone know of a secret ingredient to get that square sausage flavour?
I grew up on the Firth of Clyde and when my Mum would make stovies it was always with slice and she would put dough buoys in it. I’ve not had them in a very long time as I became a vegetarian back in the late 80’s but I’m figuring out the best vegetarian mince to make my own slice with, so that I can 🙂
I made this in my slow cooker today, the house smelled fantastic when I got home! Waiting for my husband to get home from work and we’re going to tuck in! I did cheat and have a taste when I got home, it was amazing!! Also, I love Ayrshire, my husband is from Irvine! Thanks so much for the recipe! Xx
So glad I found you channel, from ayrshire too and didn't realise there were different kinds from different areas. Plus I'm using a slow cooker so a perfect recipe to follow but il add slice with the links 😊 can't wait! Keep up the great videos!
I'm an american w/scottish ancestry and we ate this a lot and I never knew there was a name untill I watched your recipes. We have a box version called Hamburger Helper w/potatoes. If your poor you make your own from scratch. Now I laughing because it simple but perfect meat and potatoes. Love your recipes!
Stovies originate from the East coast, a real Tuechter meal made by agricultural workers and incorporating left overs from a joint of mutton, gifted to the workerst from the landowner. Stovies originally contained Mutton (possibly beef) ,dripping from the roasted joint, potato's and onion. And nothing else.
In my student days, post 1968, potatoes, carrots.onions boiled and drained, bashed with diced corned beef. Simple, filling and nutritious. The english bloke's version haut cuisine. Ha ha. Lovely accent from the presenter. Thank you from an Irish gentle man - I hope.
G'day my name is Simone, i've popped across from Helen's channel Wright at Home. I would just like to say a very warm thank you for sharing with us your "Whats for Tea' and I'm so looking forward to your beautiful recipes. I simply can't wait. Thank you again and I hope you had a lovely weekend xxx
Hi lovely Cheryl. Inspired by you I just bought a slow cooker, and made this recipe as ‘the virgin” meal’ 😀 And it was soooooo lovely and my hubby was very happy and changed his mind about ‘the slow cooker being just another kitchen pot’ 🤩 Only downside for me is that the sausages I can get here are nowhere nearly as nice as the ones you can get in the UK 😒 so I’m actually thinking of making my own links next time - because this will surely be made again 💕
My granny used to make this also , but used square sausage & link sausages no carrot tho ! We used to call it Mush Mush ! Cause that’s how it turns out !! Lol but also with broon sauce !!! Delish !!! Can’t wait till I make it !
Hi there I prefer to use lorne sausage for my stovies I think there’s a bit more spice in them, but I follow your recipe and the result is delicious a really warming dish. Regards Jimf
Thanks for showing me how to make stoves I am going to have a go at it, my name is wullie also from South West Ayrshire, Newmills so a slow cooker in Kilmarnock is my next step. Stay safe flower 👍👍
Hi i just came across your sausage stovies recipe. .looks nice i am a chef from England all the way from the west country .....ive herd of this an made it but used corned beef was real nice ...anyway s stovies is old scottish word for to stew which come from the french word étuvé which means braised ....bit of useless information for you ...an yes now i live in fife in Kirkcaldy ....love your channel x
When I moved to Ayrshire after living most of my life in another part of Scotland I was suprised the stovies there use sausagemeat, I am used to mince based ones.
Well you have solved my problem with slow cookers, you don't have to cover the contents with liquid! My stews would always have a ton of gravy. There was me filling the pot to the brim before setting it off in the morning. Taste great but far too sloppy. Thanks. Also I'm going to have keep an eye out for beef links, I'm down in Cornwall and they are not something I have come across.
Hey I am from Livingston Scotland. I have a slow cooker love it. I know how to make stovies and sausage casserole but I would love to see some other recipes for the slow cooker can u help.
Looked at so many recipes , this is my favourite .... We cannot find Lorne sausages here, I use chopped steak cut in smallish pieces , I also cook mine in an electric skillet , But same recipe , I use BISTO gravy mix ....
Hi Sharon :) I think that's an old link...so probably not working now. Mine is a 3.5 litre, recommended for 4 people, but you can get bigger ones if you have a large family. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Cheryl, I went straight through to Argos & purchased a 3.5 litre arriving on Monday! so going to be following your tasty slow cooker meals asap! x
I’m making these for dinner tomorrow for my gran, she hasn’t had them since she left Scotland (Preswick & Dalmellington) in 1966. I’ll let you know if they were a success. 😊 1.5 pints = 853ml in Australia. 😉
I have the exact same slow cooker you're using but every time I try to make this, after 8 hours on low the potatoes (Maris Pipers as recommended) and carrots are still almost raw , what am I doing wrong?
Richard Higgins try parboiling them on top of the stove. I live in America and I have to do that sometimes depending on what type of potatoes and carrots. It is hard to explain but I always take a bite of raw potato and from that bite I determine if the potatoes will be hard or easy to cook. My Mother did it that way and so did my Gran. We were all born in Kentucky and have Scottish ancestors
I made these....they turned out epic!
Awww that's great Alan :) I love stovies....amazing!

Just made this for our tea tonight here in Lancashire, first time trying it, it was amazing 😻 🙏 thanks Cheryl
Us Lancastrians do love a good bowl of hearty stodgy goodness 😍

Sounds lovely 🥰
Lucky you getting lovely stovies for Sunday breakfast. That would’ve our dinner for during the week my dad was the best stovie maker. Happy memories.
Butter beans! Wow,sounds like a great idea. Never had them in stories but sounds lovely.
Binge watching old videos. It’s so nice to see where it all began ❤️

The crispy bits burnt to the pan are the best 😊 I’m in Australia now but I’m making stovies on this rainy day. Thanks

It looks yummy

Thank you for posting this. I’ve been craving stovies. Stovies was one of the few meals my Dad used to make. Nothing like stovies on cold autumn day.
Super easy delicious dish.

Govan - square sliced, and leeks instead of onions. Magnificent. Equivalent to peasant dishes around the world.

Yes! The HH with potatoes is the way to go. I add canned green beans to it near the end. Comfort food season is here!
I. Love hamburger helper too 🙂

They look good Cheryl. I wonder how many different recipes for stovies there are in the world? Every family has their own take on it. 😂
Thank you. It was delicious.
I usually put a bayleaf in it aswell and half a spoon of good vinegar and a few twists of pepper.
When I moved to Ayrshire after living most of my life in another part of Scotland I was suprised the stovies there use sausagemeat, I am used to mince based ones.
I bet Worcestershire sauce would go nicely with it too 😋
That's what I thought.. it did look bland. No herbs or seasoning.
My thoughts too. It's how I do mine.@@paulmercury6571
Have the ingredients...so going to make this!
This looks amazing! I'll need to get my wife to make this. I love how the potatoes are broken down and have thicken everything up.
What the hell! Roll up yer sleeves and have a crack you lazy bugger. It's the missus night off.
@@leamcfc4 Yes, I can make it. My wife has a channel and would do a video on it.
I usually use cornbeef but I'm going to try that
This is the way I like mine....minds me of my mum
💚
Reminds me of Scouse with sausage instead steak or corned beef 😋
I didnt know there could be so many kinds of potatoes! Lol
My family used tinned corned beef for our stovies
You forgot the broon sauce at the end.
So I did :D Welcome x

I have the exact same slow cooker you're using but every time I try to make this, after 8 hours on low the potatoes (Maris Pipers as recommended) and carrots are still almost raw , what am I doing wrong?
Oh no :( how odd. I would try turning it up to medium then or even on high for the first few hours? I haven't had this happen before... try this x
Can you do a video on how you make your Gravy?

It's so tasty Lee :) Give it a go...let me know how you liked it!
How long on low
Hi. What stock did you use.
Just beef stock Margaret :) Any beef stock would do fine
IM NO ONE FOR STOCK CUBES . I USE A BIT 'ATORA' (BEEF SUET) AND A WEE BIT 'BOVRIL' .
Whats the liquid? 😂😂 it was brown.. is it stock? Is it runny gravy
