- Hi folks :)
Welcome back to what’s for tea! And I hope you’re having a great day so far!
For tea tonight I made this amazing Dundee beef stew with dumplings! Just the same as a normal beef stew with the addition of marmalade gives the stew it’s name :) Dundee being very well known for it’s fabulous marmalade, best to use bitter marmalade if you can find it…but whatever you’ve got will do :)
Very easy to make, everything gets cooked in the same pan…and it’s absolutely delicious! Cook it low and slow, and you’ll have a beautiful, melt in the mouth stew!
I’ve listed everything I used below…in case you want to give it a go for yourself.
Thanks for stopping by and until I see you next, take care x

I Used- (serves 4-5)
1 Teaspoon baking powder
1/2 Teaspoon paprika
50g (1/2 stick) Butter
225g (8oz) Diced onions
300ml (1 1/4cup) red wine
900g (2lb) Diced stewing steak
300ml (1 1/4 cup) Beef stock
100g (1 cup) Self raising flour
50g (1/2 cup) Plain/all purpose flour
3 Cloves garlic (chopped or minced)
1 Generous tablespoon marmalade (I used bitter marmalade)
50g (1/2 cup) Beef suet (if you can’t find suet, apparently cold butter works just as well :)
100g (4 oz) Button mushrooms (quartered)
Salt & Pepper
Oil for frying (I used olive oil)
**I Served ours with mashed potato and broccoli :)**

Oh, boy! on a cold winter's night, nothing tasted better than Mum's Scottish stew. She used Bisto as a thickener. Served with a round loaf of Sourdough bread and butter and I was in 7th Heaven!
I grew up on meals like this. My grandmother put thyme in her dumplings if her stew was plain. She cooked on a wood range and as soon as one meal was over, she'd start preparing for the next meal. We were a dairy-farming family and we ate well. Maori people, of which I come from with English/Irish ancestry too, are familiar with these types of meals and have our own little twist on these recipes using local ingredients. Nice to come across your channel. Cheers from distant NZ!
As we say in the U.S., "a good stick-to-your-ribs meal"...thanks for sharing.
Ah you're more than welcome :) Thanks for watching!
😉 We say that in the UK too!
so nice to see a cooking video step by step , fully explained with no annoying music in the background , even down to showing what wine you used . most dont do this and leave viewers asking what wine etc , nice easy slow video and sooo yummy
I made this! OMG! This is the most amazing stew I’ve eaten for a long long time. I did omit the marmalade though as I’m not much for sweet food. Many thanks to you. This is out of the world tasty.
I nearly licked my phone screen !!!!
Painfully hungry again 🤣🤣🤣
That looks delicious and perfect for a fall dinner ! (Thank you for including the “cup” measurements!)
Hiya :) I keep meaning to add 'cup' measurements...but sometimes I forget :D Thanks for watching
New to your channel, looks delicious, my great great grandfather was from Scotland so wonderful to see something from his home country.
Love the look of this. You have beautiful surroundings. I love Scotland - we used to holiday in Scotland for 6 weeks every summer...loved it - it still has a special place in my heart x
It's a very special place :) Thanks for watching, and have a wonderful Christmas
I can't wait to make this it looks absolutely delicious, and those dumplings are TDF Thank you so much, Cheryl, for sharing :-)
At college I was once nearly burnt at the stake for flouring my beef cubes before browning. Colour means flavour where as the flour will burn before the meat gets sealed. We sorted this and then moved on. Delivery was brill and end result was mouthwatering. Keep it up.
This looks absolutely amazing.
Lovely winter food thank you ❤️
You stew and dumplings looked fabulous. I can't wait for the cold weather to make what I call winter meals. 💕🇨🇦

Well having been born and raised in Dundee I’m definitely gonna gie this a go! I now live in the US but love all the traditional Scottish recipes. I absolutely love your channel and look forward to all the new recipes because they are so delicious!
Wow. I'm starving as dinner was ages ago. Watching you make this has made my mouth water and tummy rumble. Looks amazing. Never thought of adding marmalade to a stew. Gotta try it. Dumplings look absolutely amazing. Many thanks from Nick in Nottingham UK
Mouth watering food and a pleasingly relaxing video. I'm now addicted to this channel.
Looks lovely ... I'll have to make it.. I love your shots of Scotland..
I love your cooking reminds me of my mother’s cooking, she was from Dundee also where I was born but only lived there until I was four. All her cooking when I was young was based on Scottish food, so to hear your accent and see the the cooking warms my heart and makes me hungry. PS maybe not so many americanisms of your lovely accent?😊
Ohhhh, that looks absolutely delicious.🤗 thank you so much for sharing your Scottish recipes..
My heritage is Scottish, I’m from a little village in Ontario Canada called Halliburton Highlands..we have the Scottish summer games every summer and bag pipes..🤗 my maiden name is Cowen...❤️ from 🇨🇦

Gonna try when my new kitchen is finished 😀

Doing this today. Thankyou for including cup measurements
Love the food you cook and you cook and demonstrate so well. Dundee was the birthplace of my maternal grandmother and she used to cook the the same kind of fare you cook on your channel. One of my favourites is mince and tatties. I also love square sausage and tattie scones and stovies. Anything Scottish. Good wholesome food which always went down a treat, even with my late stepfather, who was from Aberdeen. Love your channel and thanks for sharing the less well known recipes I have yet to try. Kind regards. 😋👍🙂
Thank you for a wonderful easy to follow recipe. (UK)
Sounds delicious
Hi Cheryl, I love watching your videos, haven't tried any of your recipes yet, but I will be. I have watched others cooking the same things but I must say, your food always looks better in the end. Keep on cooking and making the vids for us to watch. I'm from Australia and it is autumn going into winter so I will be looking forward to some stews and soups.
Jute, jam and journalism. Originally from Dundee so this gave me serious nostalgia.

when we were kids our mum would remove the dumplins from stew or broth and have as a sweet with syrup on...give it a try!
👋 Hey there, hope all is well. Always watch and try to always 👍, don't always comment tho. Anyway, this looks AMAZING and would love to ring you up and place an order for delivery LOL. Will definitely be giving this a go in the near future. Mom's Beef stew was an absolute favorite from childhood.. with the "yummy gummy" dumplings on top. Your version is different in several ways and I can't wait to give it a go. I know it will be wonderful, haven't been disappointed yet. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and 💫 💫 wishing you (and Mr. What's for Tea) an absolutely AWESOME WEEK! 💜 *LK*
I was very young when I last had Dumplings. Begs the question about doing this in the Slow Cooker. Adding the Dumplings half - one hour from the end. I need to do this take me back to School age. Thank You.
Can't beat a good home cooked strew and dumplings. The marmalade added is new one on me. But I will certainly try it great video once again. . Thanks for sharing xxlove from Renfrewshire x
Hi Sandra :) The stew was lovely...but next time, I'd add half the amount of marmalade! Thanks for watching
Yummmmmmmmm!
Oh this looks delicious, I'm def trying this. However I must stop watching cooking videos late at night lol. I'm new subscriber who is binge watching your vids and getting lots of ideas so many thanks
Looking forward to making this. The only change is the mushrooms...I don't like them so I will put little Yukon Gold potatoes and delete the mashed potatoes. I think maybe I will use peas and carrots for the sides. Thanks for sharing this recipe.Have a Blessed day.
That would be lovely Margaret :)
My hubby likes the look of this one. I have a roast and onions right now, so I will make this tomorrow! xx
I meant mushrooms, lol!
I’m newly subscribed, been watching for about 10 days. I love classic homemade food, you can’t beat it. Definitely going to try this , so thank you for sharing xx
