Roman, I recommend getting yourself some motor-cross boots if you're riding dirt. I once rescued a bloke who had come off, and the bike was laying on is legs. The exhaust pipe had burnt his shins quite badly, otherwise he was uninjured. He was wearing a small pair or road boots.
If anybody wants to watch two of the most adventurous motorcycle rides in the world,...you have to get the DVD's on Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor's fantastic trip from the most northern tip of the British Isles to Cape Town South Africa,...then these two take their BMW's around the world ( almost ) laterally. These two movies are awe inspiring and exciting to watch. They are called "Long Way Down, then Long Way 'Round."
Long Way Round is a classic and a must see for anyone who likes to dream of adventure! Ewan McGregor really won me over. He is not just a pre madonna actor!
I had a 2010 GS, just got a 2018 GSA 5 days ago and OMG, this is unreal. They truly will do anything. And everything. Not anything great, but everything well enough for a clod like me. I’ve had over 40 bikes over my 48 years of riding and the GSA is absolutely one of my favorites.
These are highly versatile machines. If I want to cut across a National Park where much of that would be fire roads or one lane dirt road then I can do it with a fair amount of confidence even with 80/20 tires. I avoid deep sand and mud but aside from those conditions I've had my GSA about everywhere. Furthermore, if I want to cruise long distances on the Interstate at high speeds (100MPH+) the GSA will do it all day every day and never break sweat. These are highly competent street machines capable of more off road than most people would think.
For me if I want to cruise the interstate- this bike is not a good choice to go 100 mph day after day. A 1600 GT or GTL or even an older LT is the bike for that. I have owned all three and currently own a GSA- The 1600 GT/GTL OR LT give you a much better and more comfortable ride at high speeds than the 2 cylinder GS/GSA.

That bike is indeed a GSA! The GSA is just a cool looking bike. If you’re tired of being like everyone else with a Harley or a Gold Wing this bike just exudes different and a whole lot of fun factor. But that’s just me. Ride safe and ride often.

Well, I have 2018gsa and I off-roading pretty hard all the time, it handles great in all conditions (sand, river, rocks, mountains....) is not only for the street buddy ;)

I love my 2008 GSA...much lighter and simpler than the new ones, easier to work on, and fewer electronics to be concerned with. Plus because of the lighter wight and simpler engine design it is more suited for easier off-road riding, all that was needed on my 2008 were a set of 50/50 tires and a GPR front stabilizer for more front end stability in gravel and over technical trails. How can you manage a 600 lb bike off-road?! I am impressed with your riding skills and nerves. I owned a 500-ish lb Scrambler and it was useless off-road. Took it on a light trail a couple of times just to see what it was like. Forget it.
Ive rode Harleys all my life ( and not a SINGLE problem with one) but I would love to have a BMW. Love that flat boxer engine. Sadly I gave up motorcycle riding....im just not ready to die yet after having way to many very close calls. Every single ride I took resulted in several close calls because of all the GD cell phones people are on! Im just not going to die over somebody texting on their phone
Had a KLR 650 and did not like it for anything bad on road and dirt transmission gear ratios really sucked. Will only get an adventure bike 750cc twin cylinder or larger.
I’d kick my younger self for not wanting this. Now that I am a tad wiser, this right here is the best bike to own.... And as always, it’s an absolute pleasure visiting TFL
Roman, the are some great videos on the proper technique for lifting a heavy bike. I was able to lift my Super Tenere (about the same size) with 2 fractured ribs thanks to using the proper technique.
There is no unicorn. That’s why we have all sorts of bikes: trials, enduro, MX, trail, small-mid-large Adv. I’ve ridden small adv bikes and hated them after 1 hour as they were too cramped and buzzy. If you want to munch miles on dirt roads or tarmac...can’t beat the GS. If you want to do single technical trails then probably a 250-500. But once all your gear is loaded on any bike it’s bloody hard to put your leg down and slide out your rear wheel 😏 Ask me I tried it once - it didn’t end well 😬

Your opinion is honest. I never buy a over priced bike like BMW. Very high cost service compared to the other. I never ride a bike which blow out my wallet. I ride my Jap bike with my friend last year over 15,000 km and we never had a problem and the service cost is reasonable . Most 1200GS/GSA riders take their bikes on road not off road in the region where I live. Purely from a bike’s function, the GS is not worth the price tag. But it is brain VS heart. Riders who buy 1200GS shows they are rich while the others can’t afford as the heavies price tag in its class. Anyway, if you really like the 1200GS and can afford it, do not hesitate to get one. But one thing I have to clear, in a kind of bike at its class, a more expensive bike doesn’t necessarily mean better in most cases, on the contrary, less expensive bike do the job surprisingly well and even better.
Good to see a bike review but a pointer, don’t stab the dirt with your foot. You’re not on a dirt bike. We do that on dirt bikes to help with a 90 degree plus turn but on an adventure bike (I have an 800gsa) keep those feet on the pegs, man. Easiest way to mess up your leg from ankle up to your hip.

Quick note on helmets- there are different shape heads and helmets. I finally figured out I have a "long oval" head, and bought a "long oval" helmet. I can finally wear a helmet for over an hour without getting a blinding headache!
that´s why i do maintenance myself. it´s not really expensive or all that hard (if you are mecanically inclined), due to the good build Quality and accessibility of all parts.
It took me 5 years to finally convince myself to pay $35,000 for this bike, with all the panniers, GPS and other add-ons. Is it worth it? Yes, but very hard to ride on single trail. Not fun dropping a bike that cost more than most regular sedans!!

I live in Africa and you see posers with these bikes but real travelers ride lighter, smaller, less technical bikes. I couldn't even imagine trying to ride that behemoth through African traffic.
I used my 1200 now 1250 daily in African Traffic and have travelled most of Southern Africa on my GSA’s. I must be one of those posers you talking about Jay Mr World you better not fly in any aircraft either. They are all now controlled by many many electronics.. 😂 It’s not the best selling adventure bike in the world for nothing.

TFLoffroad, my remark was by no means a criticism. It was just an idea that there is much more to review in the two wheeled world that does not go “off road”. The GS adventure is a very competent off road machine, but is also an amazing road touring bike. I love the focus on this channel regarding being off road. Just many more angles to look at with the two wheeled world that I believe your brand can tap into very successfully. Keep doing what you are doing. Love watching your videos. By the way, your brand has matured amazingly in the past several years. You should be proud of what you have now. Great Job!
Guess if you're over weight, unfit and lack the skills this bike wouldn't be much fun of road, for the rest of us this bike is a blast off road, ride mine as with most of my mates off road 70% of the time.
Sorry but $27k for an “off-road bike”......no. Yes BMW and the 1200 with the help of Ewan and Charlie made its self a household name but it’s not the end all do all bike. It’s bigger, more complex and way beyond heavy besides the hefty price tag. Yes it’s almost blasphemy to say anything against the BMW! it’s developed it’s self into a “lifestyle “ brand with followers to suit but its holding onto that title like an old Rocky Movie. Sorry but so many great bikes on the market that are so much better for the average person! Bikes that are both less expensive to own and way more reliable......not to mention better at handling the dirt. Careful that bells and whistles with a hefty price tag means best!
Ofcourse there are a lot of other bikes, but ehh this video is about the BMW. Say whatever you want against it. Typically the critics are coming from people that cannot afford one. The American bikes are even more expensive for less value.
joris suffuhrt I had a 1200GS, put 55k Miles it on, rode it from one side of the USA to another, a lot of dirt. I can afford one and so I call BS. Its a perception people have developed and been marketed to when a lot less choices were available in the ADV segment. Nowadays there’s anything from a WR250R to a KTM 1290R that can fill the “do anything” role. Pocket book, perception and belief are first world problems that drive this. The desire to own a BMW is in some cases are the driving force compared to having one and knowing what it’s about. You can keep the expensive maintenance, the final drive problems, leaking this and that because I’ve had it and it’s overpriced, complex and heavy. Not what I find is great for off road.
P C accepted. Think about the new 850 gs adventure. 21 inch and a great bike. Much better price and for me superior to honda. Yes bmw has a price but so does ducati and triumph. Also the new 1290 ktm is in the same pricerange here in europe if you want full option.
What year was your GS? BMW introduced it 15 years ago. And the current bike is a far superior better machine. I've owned over 34 bikes, 9 of which have BMW's, mainly GS/A's. I've done decent mileages on them and had zero problems - which is much more than can be said for the other 23 bikes. A number of my friends have owned multiple GS's. Same thing. Big miles, no problems. There's lighter bikes; cheaper bikes; and bikes that work off-road better. But as large capacity, low maintenance, reliable, comfortable, practical adventure tourers go, it's always been the best option and remains so. If Ducati could swallow its pride and make the road version of the Multistrada shaft-drive, or better still belt-drive, it would give many GS owners something to think about. But as it is, BMW have it all their own way, which is one reason why the GS/A is the biggest selling motorcycle in the world.
Probably the worst review of not only an Adventure motorcycle, but maybe any motorcycle. The Adventure bike that started the whole ADV bike segment deserves so much more than a timid rider who memorized the press release packet.
Stick to reviews of 4 wheel vehicles. Get an experienced adventure rider next time to do the review. And here's a riding tip for you, stabbing your foot out like that while riding, is a good way to break an ankle.
Warner Bauer I actually test rode both bike the same day. The the ftr1200 felt heavier. Has less horsepower. The heat coming from the engine and exhaust is enough to cook you. It looks cool is about it. Other than that your buying and overpriced naked bike.
Sorry ! TFL ! But this bike is definitely good but ! , if it does break down in middle of nowhere (they usually last long but anything can happen overland or in accidents scenario ) , you are done ! That's why real pro hardcore solo overland biker always use light bike , not that much costly and which is very easy and cheap to maintain at least by any roadside mechanic because costly bikes can not guarantee anything but big costly troubles and bills ! Plus anything breaks and you went outside their network and aftermarket parts ,..... your wantee is gone and insurance is always high with these high value bike , so it is just a big no ! no ! unless you are a millionaire ! I am specifically talking about overlanding tours outside of Europe and North American continent ! So , preferable choices are always the Asian and south Asian brands !
Rode one last weekend, seat was extremely comfortable, windscreen was Impressively adequate for its size and I didn’t have an issue when I tried the quick shifter, probably best for higher rpm upshifts

Charlie and Ewan took a couple of these around the world right? Of course they needed three guys and a support crew, a bunch of Russian truck drivers, a welder and a few mechanics. Let's not forget a ton of money and being a celebrity did not hurt. I guess if you had all that stuff including the medic it would be the bike of choice. If I didn't have all that stuff then this bike would be the last bike I would take around the world. Six hundred pound anything is too heavy to ride anywhere off pavement, just my opinion. In the last 10 years only Yamaha has more recalls than the company that makes this swiss army knife.

Dont rev a cold engine like that. The GS has a progressive red line that goes to 9000 once warmed up. When it is at 6500, it’s cold.

The GS adventure is a very competent off road machine, but is also an amazing road touring bike. I love the focus on this channel regarding being off road. Just many more angles to look at with the two wheeled world that I believe your brand can tap into very successfully. Keep doing what you are doing. Love watching your videos.
By the way, your brand has matured amazingly in the past several years. You should be proud of what you have now. Great Job!
Guess if you're over weight, unfit and lack the skills this bike wouldn't be much fun of road, for the rest of us this bike is a blast off road, ride mine as with most of my mates off road 70% of the time.

Sorry but $27k for an “off-road bike”......no. Yes BMW and the 1200 with the help of Ewan and Charlie made its self a household name but it’s not the end all do all bike. It’s bigger, more complex and way beyond heavy besides the hefty price tag. Yes it’s almost blasphemy to say anything against the BMW! it’s developed it’s self into a “lifestyle “ brand with followers to suit but its holding onto that title like an old Rocky Movie. Sorry but so many great bikes on the market that are so much better for the average person! Bikes that are both less expensive to own and way more reliable......not to mention better at handling the dirt. Careful that bells and whistles with a hefty price tag means best!
Ofcourse there are a lot of other bikes, but ehh this video is about the BMW. Say whatever you want against it. Typically the critics are coming from people that cannot afford one. The American bikes are even more expensive for less value.
joris suffuhrt I had a 1200GS, put 55k Miles it on, rode it from one side of the USA to another, a lot of dirt. I can afford one and so I call BS. Its a perception people have developed and been marketed to when a lot less choices were available in the ADV segment. Nowadays there’s anything from a WR250R to a KTM 1290R that can fill the “do anything” role. Pocket book, perception and belief are first world problems that drive this. The desire to own a BMW is in some cases are the driving force compared to having one and knowing what it’s about. You can keep the expensive maintenance, the final drive problems, leaking this and that because I’ve had it and it’s overpriced, complex and heavy. Not what I find is great for off road.
P C accepted. Think about the new 850 gs adventure. 21 inch and a great bike. Much better price and for me superior to honda. Yes bmw has a price but so does ducati and triumph. Also the new 1290 ktm is in the same pricerange here in europe if you want full option.
What year was your GS? BMW introduced it 15 years ago. And the current bike is a far superior better machine. I've owned over 34 bikes, 9 of which have BMW's, mainly GS/A's. I've done decent mileages on them and had zero problems - which is much more than can be said for the other 23 bikes. A number of my friends have owned multiple GS's. Same thing. Big miles, no problems. There's lighter bikes; cheaper bikes; and bikes that work off-road better. But as large capacity, low maintenance, reliable, comfortable, practical adventure tourers go, it's always been the best option and remains so. If Ducati could swallow its pride and make the road version of the Multistrada shaft-drive, or better still belt-drive, it would give many GS owners something to think about. But as it is, BMW have it all their own way, which is one reason why the GS/A is the biggest selling motorcycle in the world.

Probably the worst review of not only an Adventure motorcycle, but maybe any motorcycle. The Adventure bike that started the whole ADV bike segment deserves so much more than a timid rider who memorized the press release packet.

Stick to reviews of 4 wheel vehicles. Get an experienced adventure rider next time to do the review. And here's a riding tip for you, stabbing your foot out like that while riding, is a good way to break an ankle.
Bmw roughly claims 50 european mpg. I know we are awkward but deal with it.

Warner Bauer I actually test rode both bike the same day. The the ftr1200 felt heavier. Has less horsepower. The heat coming from the engine and exhaust is enough to cook you. It looks cool is about it. Other than that your buying and overpriced naked bike.

Sorry ! TFL ! But this bike is definitely good but ! , if it does break down in middle of nowhere (they usually last long but anything can happen overland or in accidents scenario ) , you are done !
That's why real pro hardcore solo overland biker always use light bike , not that much costly and which is very easy and cheap to maintain at least by any roadside mechanic because costly bikes can not guarantee anything but big costly troubles and bills !
Plus anything breaks and you went outside their network and aftermarket parts ,..... your wantee is gone and insurance is always high with these high value bike , so it is just a big no ! no ! unless you are a millionaire !
I am specifically talking about overlanding tours outside of Europe and North American continent !
So , preferable choices are always the Asian and south Asian brands !

Quickshifter is no good, bad screen and uncomfy seat.....awesome engine though.
Rode one last weekend, seat was extremely comfortable, windscreen was Impressively adequate for its size and I didn’t have an issue when I tried the quick shifter, probably best for higher rpm upshifts
@@Kwhopperfan I ended up buying one....now I absolutely love it. Fitted an aftermarket screen and now I find the seat really comfortable, maybe it was the pants I was wearing before ☺️

Charlie and Ewan took a couple of these around the world right? Of course they needed three guys and a support crew, a bunch of Russian truck drivers, a welder and a few mechanics. Let's not forget a ton of money and being a celebrity did not hurt. I guess if you had all that stuff including the medic it would be the bike of choice.
If I didn't have all that stuff then this bike would be the last bike I would take around the world. Six hundred pound anything is too heavy to ride anywhere off pavement, just my opinion. In the last 10 years only Yamaha has more recalls than the company that makes this swiss army knife.
