      @FCYuv13 That’s how the name of the starsign Pisces is pronounced in English: pie-sees. Yes, I know it's a Latin word and that isn't how it's pronounced in Latin (piss-kays) or Italian (pishes), but that's the convention -- I don't know why! The Latin word means "fishes" and the symbol for the astrological starsign is two fishes swimming in opposite directions (derived from the supposed shape of the astronomical constellation.) It is thus taken to symbolise duality (yin and yang, good and evil, life and death, even male and female) which is pretty well played out in the song itself -- as well as a lot of identification with fish... "Neptune" is probably a reference to the planet Neptune, which is the ruling planet for the starsign in modern astrology. The gemstone for the starsign is aquamarine -- which doesn't scan. Tati usually starts her lyrics with Russian prose which she translates into English poetry -- hence probably "emeralds". Similarly, "butchers" should probably be "fishmongers" in idiomatic English, but that doesn't scan either...

      @@johnbriggs3916 I assumed that Neptune referred to the Roman God of the Sea. Analogous to the Greek Poseidon.

      @lexiburrows8127 Yes, everyone assumes that. But "Neptune's child" would -- under my interpretation -- be anyone born under the starsign Pisces. Which ties in with verses 1 and 2 -- see the repeated "shivering inside."

    There is a layer here and there but that's pretty much all her. A good live concert example would be Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 or Pit of Consciousness Live in Kyiv. This song is somewhat different from other songs they do.

      There's certainly double tracking in the second chorus.

      @@johnbriggs3916 A live session isn't a live performance. It's not where a recording ends it's where it starts. Prior to the early 70s pretty much every modern music recording started with a live session of everyone playing in the room together. Live sessions then were done because of the lack of available tracks for individual instruments. Now the purpose is to capture the magic of an initial performance and then treat it like every other recording with overdubs, mixing and mastering. For bands who play well together they can sometimes render a better performance by playing off of each other than sitting in a room alone listening to a click or previously recorded tracks from other members of the band.

    • @johnbriggs3916

      @@coder4liberty Yes, but it is supposed to at least start with a live performance. There is legitimate debate as to whether that is what is recorded here. See also my other comment.

      @@johnbriggs3916 It did and the vocals are slightly different as are the other performances. Acoustic guitar replaced with clean electric, bass is different, etc..

      @@coder4liberty The guitar, bass and (obviously) drums are newly recorded, but I can’t actually detect any difference in the vocals from the album track (apart from the soprano belt in the outro -- on the album track this is dubbed over the screamed vocal, which is bonkers.)

    Lol if no structure bothers you then never listen to Opeth or Porcupine Tree. Prog is my favourite. I like the unpredictability, tempo changes and artistry of the musicians.

      @FCYuv13  3 місяці тому

      I dont mind songs with no structure if they dont really repeat themselves that much, like in most of prog music. This song is just 2 parts repeating themselves over and over again with little changes here and there

      Also i love prog music. for example, if i made a list of my top 100 favorite songs, dance of eternity by dream theater (which is one of if not the most progressive song in existence) would definitely be in like the top 20 or 25.

    A word about the misleading (but understandable) designation "live session". This song is on their 2016 album "King of Everything" and in 2017 their record company wanted to release it as the last single from the album and for the band to film an accompanying video. Now, Jinjer have had more drummers than Spinal Tap and for similar calamitous reasons. The drummer on the album was a stand-in (he is actually their touring sound mixer.) Vlad had just joined as the permanent replacement and the band were anxious that the single and video should showcase his talents. So it was decided that the video should be set in the studio as they re-recorded the track (there is some dispute over whether Tati's vocals were actually re-recorded.) The video director did a brilliant job, especially with the lighting. The band must have all turned up wearing black clothes, and he must have insisted that Tati change to a white top (you can see her black bra straps!) This rather makes her the centre of attention and she steals the show. The record label must have been ecstatic with the result and did more post-production than would be normal for a live session. "Studio session" would probably have been better, but they wanted to distinguish it from the album track.
