Dicky Herlambang It’s about a lad who’s out in the town of Belfast, a meets a pretty young maid (who has a black velvet band). He gets charmed and they walk for a bit before she nicks a pocketwatch from a passing gentleman and gives it to the lad. Next he’s in court for the theft of the pocketwatch, and ends up being sent to Australia on a prison ship. Sometimes, the young maid gets sent as well. The end of the song tells the moral: don’t get too taken by those young maids, beware before they get you drunk and doing stupid things. It’s more of a light warning or a fun tale then a sad song. Does that all make sense?

when my husband was alive and lived Birmingham we always went to see the Dubliners brought back memiries my husband was burn Dublin I miss him every day when hear them
I love this song and I love Lukes exuberance, he's a great entertainer - he obviously appealed to a variety of age groups and people from all walks of life judging by the audience. I've just read about him on wikipedia (i'm too young to remember him!!) it was sad he died so young, what a talent lost :o( RIP
Rest Easy, Luke, one of the greatest singers in Irish history. A true icon of this country. It's performances like this that make me proud to be an Irishman (Cause it's surely not the government, hahaha) 🇮🇪♥️

Authenticity. Stumbled here after watching some Shane macgowan videos with the Dubliners. The clarity of Luke's voice is unmatched by any artist before or since. Simply divine.
My mum was Irish I first went there when I was seven. Love this song and play it on my guitar. Shame we lost Luke so early . Great singer and a great song. Love the Irish. What's not to like? Great music and even better people
my grandad sang this to me when I was a child just love this song LUKE KELLY WAS a legend absolutely amazing I'm 52 years old now and still love this song brilliant absolutely fantastic what more can I say
I remember the evening when Luke died (but he had been seriously ill for some time before that) I had just arrived home with my new car and was all excited but then they said on the radio that Luke Kelly had died and were playing his songs and talking about him on the radio for the rest of the night. So every time I hear Luke it makes me think about that evening and that car - a mint condition 1979 Fiat 128 3p with only 20,000 miles on the clock (for the car guys who might want to know)
I really miss the Irish from the 60's, 70's and 80's in London and Manchester. Wonderful characters and people. Sadly, mostly have now either died or moved back to Ireland. The UK has been ruined. Thankfully, we have the legacy of all these lovely songs on video.

3:23 I laughed out loud at the chap cradling an armload of beers who looked genuinely aprehensive/anxious until Luke bellows out "my lads" and he craics a smile
I grew up hearing this song. Always loved it. Never knew what it was about till I was older. Great rendition, such passion, you don’t get that from the pop icons!
Luke will always be the heart of Irish music. Such a passionate talent. I don't believe in an afterlife as a rule but if there is such a place I want to jam with this man.

Can’t I watch a Irish music video on UA-cam without comments like up the RA, and about British oppression , the Dubliners are not about division as Ronnie drew said himself
@pius murphy fk get a life go out to iraq and fight isis if you want to go to war, suppose you think thr ira did not murder anyone either, and your comment on this a great singer singing is just stupid
Very true. It amuses me how a lot of the Dubliner's songs are originally British (including this one) yet you see countless comments that are so anti-british
Aye, they sang an odd rebel tune in the beginning but once the troubles started they didn't want anything to do with the whole scene, it wasnt what they stood for. But I think it still stuck in peoples heads. Didn't stick in mine, they're brilliant musicians and they just wanted to do what they did best.
Everytime I hear Luke,& the Dubliners singing they remind me of my Irish roots,& the Pride,& Passion l hold dear to my heart. My brother was born on St Patrick's Day,& religiously every year we've celebrated his extra special day by immersing ourselves in everything Irish,& this year will be the same,a plethora of Irish music in the air along with plenty of Guinness at hand, what more could a couple of Irish Rovers want!! 😉🍀☘️🎻🎵🎶🍻🍻
I've always loved music, when I was in my early teens I listened to Nirvana, Metallica and the Dubliners. Then Black Sabbath and the Dubliners. Later in my teens I turned to Death and Black Metal, during that time my favorites were Mayhem, Marduk, Bathory, and The Dubliners. When I finally got over that I found early american blues, so I listened to Robert Johnson, Son House etc, and The Dubliners. Gradually that turned into old american folk, like the Carter Family, Roscoe Holcomb, Dock Boggs etc. During this time I also listened to the Dubliners. I also listened to old Country like early Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and also the Dubliners. Now 38 years old with life long passion for music Ive found beauty and quality in almost every genre, from peruvian mountain folkmusic to russian Hardbass. Imho the original Dubliners was the greatest band to ever exist. I continuously keep finding new layers of quality and passion in their music. 5 people, each one in a million somehow got together. So grateful. Thank you
Appalachian music has lots of Irish / Scottish influence absolutely amazing, check out the Bafla brothers , creole from Louisiana, I’ve also been listening to a lot of sacred harp music lately . Your taste in music is very similar to mine, love all types of music, been listening to the Wu, Mongolian metal and Motown. You have good taste in music.
@@13infbatt Thanks and great! I first heard Dewey Balfa (and Cajun music for that matter) in the movie Southern Comfort when I was a kid. The numbers in the end of that movie are still among my favorite Cajun recordings. Loved it ever since! Search for it here on YT if you havnt heard it! Never listened to mongolian metal though :) Will give it a go.
Haha Fantastic, I've loved many of the music genres/types you've mentioned here also and like you The Dubliners have always featured through all phases/discoveries but The Dubliners had a rare magic between the players that I've never experienced to the same extent since. Fair play Daniel Bergström hope they're still giving you as much as they continue to give me.
My first memories were sitting on my mum's knee, with her singing this song. this was long before I went to school. She used to go out with friends and take me along. Half the reason I still listen to Irish music is because I grew up listening to the Dubliners and the Irish rovers among other things. Every once in awhile especially when I'm drunk I come back and listen to this stuff and remember a time before life went bad
Exactly my case too. Both my parents are Irish immigrants that came to America. They had me, and all I could remember was my dad listening to all these Irish songs. This was the song they always stuck with me. It takes me back to a simpler time as well.
If I possessed a fraction of this fine man's passion ...I would breeze through life on an inexplicable high ..every time I hear his wonderful voice ..truly awesome

In a neat little town they called Belfast
Apprentice to trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
Have I spent in that neat little town
As sad misfortune came over me
Which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from me friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll down broadway
Meaning not long for to stay
When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid
Come a-traipsing along the highway
She was both fair and handsome
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll with this pretty fair maid
And a gentleman passing us by
Well, I knew she meant the doing of him
By the look in her roguish black eye
A gold watch she took from his pocket
And placed it right into my hand
And the very first thing that I said, was
Bad 'cess to the black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Before the judge and the jury
Next morning, I had to appear
The judge, he says to me
"Young man, you're case it is proven clear
We'll give you seven years penal servitude
To be spent far away from the land
Far away from your friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band"
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
So come all you jolly young fellows
A warning take by me
When you are out on the town, me lads
Beware of the pretty Colleens
They'll feed you with strong drink, me lads
'Til you are unable to stand
And the very first thing that you'll know is
You've landed in Van Diemens Land
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
"They'll feed you with strong drink, MY AAAA"

He had such an energy to his voice that is absent from most performers of our day.
I love his moments where he laughs while singing. I've never heard such emotion in a song in almost all my years of living (just two decades)
This is the finest folk music performance ever captured on video. The fact that it was captured in a local club is extra special.
The very best version of this song. Luke Kelly is unbelievable.🇦🇺♥️🇮🇪
2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 and I'm still coming back, and I'll be back in 2020 and every other year after that till im gone, legendary Luke Kelly
Great comment...me too.

Yes! 👍😁
Great music and even better people
my grandad sang this to me when I was a child just love this song LUKE KELLY WAS a legend absolutely amazing I'm 52 years old now and still love this song
brilliant absolutely fantastic what more can I say
I remember the evening when Luke died (but he had been seriously ill for some time before that) I had just arrived home with my new car and was all excited but then they said on the radio that Luke Kelly had died and were playing his songs and talking about him on the radio for the rest of the night. So every time I hear Luke it makes me think about that evening and that car - a mint condition 1979 Fiat 128 3p with only 20,000 miles on the clock (for the car guys who might want to know)
R.I.P Luke Kelly, Irish legend 🇮🇪
I really miss the Irish from the 60's, 70's and 80's in London and Manchester. Wonderful characters and people. Sadly, mostly have now either died or moved back to Ireland. The UK has been ruined. Thankfully, we have the legacy of all these lovely songs on video.
The Irish peoole should speak irish again😔
@@BrandurNiclasen Many do, even in London !
I'm watching and listening to this video 50 years later. Luke was the greatest balladeer of them all. He is sorely missed.
Worked with his dad, Luke senior in Jacob's 1958.
A young Christy Moore at 2:27 .What a fucking song .Proud to be Irish .
I've watched that video 100's of times and never noticed the bould Christy, well spotted

R.I.P Luke, Ciaran, Ronnie, and Barney.
And long live John, may his last days be filled with happiness, and when he finally does move onto Fiddler's Green, I'm sure the lads will be there, waiting for him.

Legends in their own right. Respect for the greatest band from Ireland. Thanks dad for introducing me to our routes and folklore from the Dubliners.
3:23 I laughed out loud at the chap cradling an armload of beers who looked genuinely aprehensive/anxious until Luke bellows out "my lads" and he craics a smile
I always laugh when I see this now! Thanks!
Actually he says "Mar dhea" which is Gaelic for "Yeah right!" or "as if"

Who came from peaky blinders
I am a Kiwi from New Zealand but I thank god that I have Irish ancestry where music like this comes from such a place.
Happy St. Patrick's Day 2019.

My friends all like rap and all that crap. Give me Irish music, classical and nostalgic songs from when I was little and I’m a happy man.
His voice was an instrument by its self . My da had the pleasure of hearing him live . RIP the voice and the man .
Luke will always be the heart of Irish music.
Such a passionate talent.
I don't believe in an afterlife as a rule but if there is such a place I want to jam with this man.

What a voice this man has bliddy amazing 🖤
In a neat little town they called Belfast
Apprentice to trade I was bound
And the many an hour's sweet happiness
Have I spent in that neat little town
A sad misfortune came over me
Which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from me friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll down Broadway
Meaning not long for to stay
When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid
Come a-traipsing along the highway
She was both fair and handsome
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll with this pretty fair maid
And a gentleman passing us by
Well, I knew she meant the doing of him
By the look in her roguish black eye
A gold watch she took from his pocket
And placed it right into my hand
And the very first thing that I said, was
Bad 'cess to the black velvet band
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Before the judge and the jury
Next morning, I had to appear
The judge, he says to me
"Young man, you're case it is proven clear
We'll give you seven years penal servitude
To be spent far away from the land
Far away from your friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band"
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
So come all you jolly young fellows
A warning take by me
When you are out on the town, me lads
Beware of the pretty Colleens
They'll feed you with strong drink, me lads
'Til you are unable to stand
And the very first thing that you'll know is
You've landed in Van Diemens Land
Her eyes they shown like diamonds
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Luke Kelly ! A legend, love his passion , sadly missed , a true Irishman who did so much for his country and loved worldwide .R.I.P.
this was my party song when me and all my drinking fishermen friends used to party in the 60s oh how i loved listening to the dubliners in my era of life they were the best of folk music.you will never be forgotten thats for sure.
Can’t I watch a Irish music video on UA-cam without comments like up the RA, and about British oppression , the Dubliners are not about division as Ronnie drew said himself
from north ireland agree with you liam
Thank f~*k for Liam O'Learys.👍
Everytime I hear Luke,& the Dubliners singing they remind me of my Irish roots,& the Pride,& Passion l hold dear to my heart.
My brother was born on St Patrick's Day,& religiously every year we've celebrated his extra special day by immersing ourselves in everything Irish,& this year will be the same,a plethora of Irish music in the air along with plenty of Guinness at hand,
what more could a couple of Irish Rovers want!! 😉🍀☘️🎻🎵🎶🍻🍻
The man is pure genius a legend I tell yea!!!!
Kelly's voice is such a gift. It has a bit of a sneer and bite but also warmth and humor

Luke Kelly is the epitome of irishness - fucking great!
I wish you could still go out on a Friday night and see this at the local bar. Sadly not in my lifetime. Thank God this is recorded!

Go Ireland!
If I possessed a fraction of this fine man's passion ...I would breeze through life on an inexplicable high ..every time I hear his wonderful voice ..truly awesome
this is lukes song, nothing comes close.
Brilliant, can never be bettered, an English fan,r.i.p. to a very brave and talented man.
