After attending a play in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1998, the cast invited the audience to join them at a local pub. I was the only one who went but they all pulled out instruments and it was the most amazing night! They played and sang, and it seemed as if everyone in the pub pulled out an instrument or sang. As an American, just visiting, it was magical. Out until 4am and some of the cast walked me back to where I was staying. Will never forget it.

Something about these moments reflect the very best of society. How a large room full of people who don't know each other can join together in song and find happiness in the midst of what would otherwise have been a frustrating situation. I just watched the "greatest saxophone battle of all time" on that NYC subway and felt the same way then. It reminds me that we can find common ground through one of the things that generally makes all human beings happy: MUSIC. Both that saxophone battle and this video reflect the best parts of our humanity in that way.

    The magic of this scenario:
    1: The musical talent.
2: the impromptu backup singers in the form of the 3 girls behind the singer.
3: The old man desperately attempting to adopt stoic disapproval ultimately let down by his feet proving the music has taken over.
4: The airport departure lounge setting, with music breaking down the barriers of interpersonal indifference uniting a group of strangers embracing the beauty of music erasing the inconvenience of a delayed flight.

I was at my friends fathers house one time, and there was a bulgarian man there who didn't speak english at all. But he played the guitar, and so did I. And even though we couldn't understand eachother at all, we did variations on songs, and showed off different musical theory during our playing together, and we smiled so much and understood that "language" very well.
That's why I think music is real art. You can be from two very different cultures and not understand eachother, but music connects anyways.

I stayed in Donegal for two weeks. Went to a remote pub. Quite a few people there. I stood near a table where 3 chaps were seemingly just enjoying their pints and having a chat.
Then one of them drew a fiddle from under the table, and started to play. Shortly after he was joined by his friends with an accordion and tin whistle of sorts.
Within 2 minutes they were surrounded by everyone in the pub, smiling, clapping and cheering. The atmosphere was just incredible. One of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’ll never forget, until I die.

I get super emotional watching this vid, not just because of the beautiful version of that song, but also because the atmosphere in the moment.
That feeling of uplifting, festive joy that everyone is enjoying, despite the circumstances is enough to melt a broken heart of a man.
The fact that even if our existence is futile, even if it all seems pointless and stupid, there are those moments where even those thoughts don't matter.
The moments where you choose to say "f*ck it, I'm gonna sing along and embrace it"
    So i did, and cried...alot

    • @dantecusolito8513
      @dantecusolito8513 4 роки тому +201

@aimee curry American bluegrass music is a relatively new genre, only emerging in the 1950s with banjo players like earl scruggs and his 3 finger technique. It is a direct descendant of Appalachian "old time fiddle" music. Old time music is in turn a descendant of the music of Irish and Scottish fiddle music wedded with the music of slaves that were kidnapped and brought to the southern US. They brought with them the memories of the akonting, a string instrument with a skin head found in west africa. Enslaved musicians then used the materials available to them to create gourd banjos, which during the 1800s were "discovered" by white musicians and slowly morphed into modern banjos. Immigrants who then returned to Ireland brought with them tenor banjos, which became irish 4 string banjos and were incorporated into their trad music alongside the fiddles, whistles, and bodhrans. The bouzouki, which is seen in this video as well is not originally an Irish instrument, but a Greek one that was incorporated into the tunes of Irish music. Essentially most of the instruments of Ireland are not originally Irish, and certainly none of the "American" instruments are native. Ireland mostly just put new instruments into their musical tradition, but all of American music is a conglomeration of music and instruments from around the world.

I have not found nicer people anywhere in the world. And it's the people that make the place so magical. The Irish have a certain quality that is present in their personalities. This quality I have a hard time defining or even giving a name but the best I can come up with is freedom of imagination. And that freedom of imagination bleeds into all aspects of life having an effect on everything in ways that we can't necessarily see all right but only when you look closer. If that makes any sense. I have not been back since my honeymoon but hope to return some day sooner than later as I may not have all that many years left. I do hope you visit or relocate there someday as well. My only experience in Ireland was an airport, in uniform returning from Afghanistan. Troop commander set a limit of two drinks. The people at the bar and the workers in the duty free (who had set up sampling tables) were pretty sure they meant that we were only allowed to pay for two. It was a wonderful experience which could have only been made better by some spontaneous music like this. As it was I returned to the plane feeling pretty tipsy, and I don’t know if I paid for any.

Seeing all those people stuck in limbo, yet singing, laughing, and clapping along together to fantastic music. This pandemic has been a long hard road, but if something as simple as a song spontaneously can bring even strangers together there is truly hope for us all. Thank you Sir.

So true.... Never met so many people who are so consistently kind to strangers. I visited Ireland on honeymoon over twenty years ago and I'm still in awe of the kindness that I found. The people from stem to stern, port to starboard of the Emerald Isle made that visit so magical it brings tears to my eyes to remember these years later. And this music brings it all flooding back again.

3 years ago I worked in Athens. One evening at the airport I met a Greek Orthodox priest. He spoke excellent english. Upon hearing I am from Ireland he said, "Ah, The Irish. Our lost Mediterranean cousins." He explained to me that the Irish mentality and attitude does not belong in Northern Europe, that the Irish approach towards life is in tune with the vitality, friendliness, and spontaneity of the Med.
I adored the people of Greece even before this man spoke to me, and after that I had even more reason to.
Somehow we Irish are the noisy party-loving neighbours in our more reserved and stiff Northern European neighbourhood.
Love to Hellas from your long-lost cousins.

My first time in Dublin, got off the bus and walked over the road with two friends intent on our first real pint of guiness. Walked into this pub that looked like it had sawdust on the floor. There was about 12 people all with musical instruments and one guy at the bar.
The chat stopped and someone was singing.. then someone else a solo on the guitar. They had whistles and a violin and other instruments Ive forgot.. it was amazing. Turn out they were all regular punters. First guiness was like drinking dishwater.. yuk. I persevered. by the third I loved the stuff. What a night. What memories. Great people.
