- Each boiler installation is like oil on canvas. Each one is a masterpiece and unique with their own individual style and purpose. During this video Pipe Doctor converts the home heating system for a client from oil heat with an indirect fired water heater to a Weil McLain CGa gas fired boiler for space heating and an AO Smith GCG for domestic hot water.

Nice to see you showing some compassion to your workers man . Some bosses are not like that.
Man I've watched enough of your videos by now after bingeing the last day or so & the one conclusion I keep arriving at is,Peter is a very cluey decent young man & has a great work ethic & I think he'll go far,he's exactly the kind of apprentice I would want.Definately a keeper.👍
Hey Mike, our thoughts and prayers go out to the new guy. Hopefully he’s OK. Please keep us updated on his condition.
Shake and bake !
I think he said the dude passed
Mike your spot on college isn’t for everyone.. your channel is educational, entertaining, but most of all real, funny & uncut .
Peter is the man , you found two keepers for sure, he’ll own the place one day
Good job guys, nice install!
You got a bit of a tough situation Mike. Seizures are a major liability and working in our conditions don’t make it easier. We all gotta look out for our crews safety and health. Hope Chris gets the right treatment and wish him well.
Job turned out very nice, in spite of the multitude of unexpected challenges you were faced with throughout the task.
You still maintained composure Mike very professional, I’m afraid the cursing would have started with me when I opened the first Weil McClain box, and increased in intensity as that day progressed. 😂
Mike, I think it’s exemplary you were able to put on a brave face for your team, considering the chaos going around during that event. Kudos my friend.
For seizures, the one thing you always want to do is protect the persons head. A towel under the persons head & neck will serve the purpose to save the person from brain damage. The only other thing you can really do is check to see if the person is breathing and make sure there is no obstruction in their airway.
It’s tough to face that situation in the field with bls training.
I highly recommend you have someone on staff (primary and secondary) your staff trained in bls (basic life support/cpr). It doesn’t cover everything, but will cover basics like this, and what proper protocol is. In this day and age, you just never know when you will need to use it.
I hope Chris can get the care and attention he needs.
We the Hispanic community watch you Mikey pipes!
I love using the valve for the expansion tank. Good job, as usual.
Great job as always! I’m not in the trades but I always enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them. Keep it up!
Wow, poor kid.. That killed the mood
Peter always hold back with that large wrench...ohhhhhhhhh
Ohhhhh baby
@@PipeDoctor Good video included some Latina Chicas exposed 😆
Great job Mikey pipes and Peter!! Peter your learning so much and coming out of your shell. You seem really interested in the trade and hope you run with it !! You have a great teacher 💯 💯
The Ecobee has more user customization and user preferences/settings than the Nest, including an actual HOLD function unlike the Nest, also permanent hold, temporary hold, etc. Amazing!
@@PipeDoctor You hate Ecobee over Nest?
Hope Chris gets the proper care. All the best to you Chris. 👍🇨🇦
I remember being a new hire and my first day was similar
@@ItsTheCostanza I hope you got the proper care. I also hope with medication you now have your health issue under control. I do understand that stress ( starting a new job ) can cause issues to flare up. Hopefully that’s all that happened with this young man. I’m not sure that Mike will keep him on, I’m hoping I’m wrong. 👍🇨🇦
funny how people with good tools make good money !
In my area the inspector makes you take the handle off the valve if you use it on an expansion tank FYI
I learn stuff from you AND you're entertaining! So much fun!
I appreciate all you teach
God bless you mike pipes
Omg I pray for him sizers are no jokes i wish him a speedy recovery.. by the grace of god Mikey you went and checked on him and he did not hit his head .
Good to know that u guys really take care of ur employees and it looked like a petite maul seizure and that is as bad as it gets thoughts and prayers for chris
Gotta love the internet. Anybody can pretend to be whoever they want. Everybody is an expert in everything, or at least pretending to be.
I LOVE THOSE LITTLE BOILERS!!!!! not available in canada unfortunatly grumble
Roger Wakefield definitely doesn't wait around at furguson 😂
Thought that guy flopping inside the truck was a set-up……..hope the guys OK!🎃. Nice job by you and your Team, Mikey👍
@@PipeDoctor Gotcha…..not to sound like an assh*le, but that issue is something that should have been expressed to you by him in the job interview. Being in the Trades and all, it possibly could be a liability to the Company. You handled it well, though. Hope he’s feeling better.
since you talked about the expansion tank valve, i started using a webstone 41672 expansion tank valve this past year. i love it. its got 1/2" female connection for the water feed, as well as a draw off to take pressure off the tank when replacing. It's not expensive either
Such an interesting story of this install. Enjoyed watching. Shows how much humanity is involved in any kind of constructino project. Kudos to Mikey for taking such good care of his crew, and putting his people first. So interesting to me that the homeowner decided to chuck a high-quality triple-pass Biasi B-10 and Amtrol indirect and endure the expense of a complete replacement with Weil McLain equipment when he could have just swapped that Riello oil burner on his Biasi B-10 for a Carlin EZGas Pro burner. The burner is about $1200, plus installation. So about a $3500 capital investment for the conversion. To have a master plumber like Mikey furnish and do a high-quality install of that Weil McLain equipment is going to cost many times that. No question that a designed-for-gas boiler like the Weil-McLain is going to be a more-efficient system than a retrofitted boiler, but it's going to take a long time to make up the delta in capital expense.
@@PipeDoctor Thanks for the info. With respect to the B-10, Biasi actually will furnish you one set up for gas with a Riello gas burner (sorry, brain fart on my part) straight from the factory, so it would seem at least to be a manufacturer-approved setup. You're correct, of course, that the Biasi gets about 87 AFUE with the oil burner, but only about 84 AFUE with the gas gun, so, as I noted, it's going to be less efficient.
I always put a valve between the expansion tank and the system. Nice job.
You are truly a Doctor
😂
Let's make the trades great again!!! 👏👏
I did not see anyone ream the black iron pipe. I come from a union electrician background. I expect the reason is what goes IN the pipe. please educate me. LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
1st time watching your video and I love it. Fantastic job 👍 job well done 👏
PIVOT...PIVOT!!! COME ON ROSS!
lol
In the past I've put some diesel into my home heating tank just to stretch it out until I can get a delivery of heating oil. I can't guarantee it won't damage your system but it worked OK in mine.
Diesel and home heating oil are basically the same, they add the red dye to the home heating oil as it's not taxed as a road fuel. If you a trucker and you can caught running heating oil they slap you with a big fine. You can run kerosene as well in an oil burner, but it's harder on the pump seals. In cold climates it's common to add some kerosene to an exterior oil tank as it will help keep the fuel from gelling.
In the old days we threaded pipe by hand
Always a good idea to put a valve at the tank. Good Service techs know this.
Hacks make me green backs 💴
Love me some Mikey Pipes videos
Good job Mike and crew. I have mono manifold in my apartment or in the building, told my landlord it doesn't work as well as a split system or as efficient as a basic system, but basically said I don't know what I'm talk about, because I didn't install the boiler or not a master plumber, I told him I used to install boilers with a master plumber as a helper, still said I don't know what I'm talking about. That's strange that a thermostat produces 24 volts of it own power, must be connected to a separate transformer, might back feed the circuit and damage the boiler X-former. Sorry about Chris's first day, tell him I wish him well. Good job again.
Very nice professional job you should be proud of yourself
Great job Mikey pipes and
Yes Mikey pipes I was looking at this video on a Wednesday morning I don't think you did the job Tuesday I think it was Monday cuz everything happens on a Monday not a Tuesday or Wednesday Thursday or Friday like that song is everything's on a Monday y'all have a blessed day and the little job looks good and the oil isgoing to keep going up cuz that guy in the office here is going to make sure it goes up too and the vice president too will make sure it goes up you have a blessed day. 🤫🤨😀💪🤟👍🍺🍺🇺🇸.
Great content as usual Mike.
I was always curious from houses I been to. Like your install where that supply/return looks like 1" black iron, whats the reason for the boiler having such big diameters and going with that 1" for those distances when its getting reduced way down to that 3/4" copper? Is it for velocity in/out of the boiler? Always wondered why installs dont reduce right at the boiler supply/return ports.
when you're running low on oil, prop the side of the bucket away from the outlet. Keeps air out of the line
"Peter you hear me"..😂
I like your approach, thats old school hvac shit!!!! Pull your shit together and get to work, we got a install to do!!
Mikey, I'm doing an oil to gas conversion right now I'm putting in a Burnham E2
sad poor guy. You need to give him another chance. Tough break. Hopes he makes a full recovery and gets ahead of his condition.
huh? he called me every 4 letter word when i saved his $400 hoodie that was only $18 on Amazon.
@@PipeDoctor what? Where u find these guys? Do you even check the references. 😂
I hope Chris is ok I have a son that has seizures daily seen Chris like that broke my heart
please don't be hard on chris i suffer from epilepsy from 3 month old. there is many things that could have brought the seizure to set on most likely stress especially since this was the first day working. Hope he gets feeling better soon !!!!!

there is no end to the training when you are in the mechanical trades....plumbing, hvac, electric, controls, manufacturers specialized training, OSHA, ad nauseam, oh and safety. And after the formal schooling you still don't know everything cause there is always something new.
In my area oil and propane are about the same currently so i stuck with oil with redoing my system. Got my buderus to hit 88% efficiency on the testo. Plus I like the simplicity.
You’ve said yourself in a past video a cast iron boiler will survive a nuclear war. Lol.
I'm in the same boat but I'm not replacing my boiler until she leaks. Going ductless, hopefully the system will be reliable
I have Mitsubishi hyper heat mini splits as well. My second floor is only heated and cooled that was. They have been flawless for the past 2 winters. Now going into the 3rd.
@@flyingmachineworks good feedback man!
Mikey Pipes you should do a q and a not necessarily about you and workers but heating and cooling questions and answers and maybe opinions. Like I have a ? What do you feel about the nest thermostat are they any good
Mike the Tee white wire is looping back with 28 volts. Its within the voltage parameter. So i dont get the issue. 🧐
Pay no attention to the haters, Mikey!
Tisk tisk to the supplier, not only giving a broken 're-boxed' boiler, but also the old version.
I worry about that happening to me one any of my guys when we are alone, that is why I always like to work with someone, you never know.. my best friend and trainer for many years had a heart attack and if our boss wasn't there with him and drove him extremely fast to the hospital he would not have made it. We also had a guy that was cutting floor heats out in new construction with a chainsaw... yea a chainsaw... and the chainsaw kicked and the dude severed his main artery in his neck and died on the job, helper came downstairs to him in a pile of blood.. be safe out there guys.
Is that galvanized pipe? That’s a no no here. Would not pass a inspection if you ever get your gas turned off they won’t turn it back on until it is removed
Pass inspection? You watch his whole video and that’s the best, you can give me come on man at least try next time.
You have a hole or a loose connection on the rubber sucking tube on the oiler
Thanks for watching
Holy Crow that was scary, I hope Chris is okay.
hey Mike that time looked like 7:51 to me or do you have a really funky watch lol.
It was actually 7:51 on your watch the first time you showed us.
Oops.
Godspeed for Chris' recovery. Mikey Pipes ... why not an indirect for this install?
When they hide their medical problems they really do want the job but know that they probably won’t be hired because of it. I didn’t tell employers everything about my medical problems either. I have a short bowel syndrome digestive problems. But I’m very good at diagnosing electrical problems and fixing anything. Only thing is sometimes I need a bathroom break more often not always.
Thanks for sharing and supporting the channel

Timing is always an enemy , especially on your first day on the job, I always would put my medical issues on my job application.
Oil has gotten crazy. Maybe Brandon can release some more of our strategic reserve before the midterms. I’ve got two 275s in my basement, and my pre season fill up of 300 gallons was close to 2k. We blow through that amount every 5 weeks during the winter. FJB
Free market determines the price of oil - so yeah capitalism!
@@matthewmartin1785 intentionally decreasing supply is what happened here.
@@Samlol23_drrich And that decrease is the free market manipulating the price point - happens all the time. It makes the case for some alternative methods - new buildings will be going all electric soon enough and there are many ways to make electric with out using petroleum to turn a turbine. And technology is just getting warmed up!
All electric is extremely expensive here in the NE.
Its the least expensive way to build and houses with electric sell at a huge discount compared to similar houses with oil (no NG around here).
I would welcome a different source but for now its the best we have
No waiting at jasco bro! And we inspect our boilers before we deliver them for you.
Hope Chris is ok
Job looks great but I didn't see the oil tank did you take out the oil tank? I hope you don't think I'm trolling. My dad was a boiler guy started teaching me when I was 14 holding a light thanks again for the videos I'll keep watching I even recommend them to my apprentices to watch
great job as usual, what was the source of the "hot" thermostat wire.
I went to wood pellets. Got a nice European wood pellet boiler. Freaking thing is boss.
@@PipeDoctor Heck yus!
the boiler getting power back-fed from thermostat. I'd guess homeowner changed it and didn't remove jumper/flip switch on a system with RH and RC fed from two systems, air handler/ac in attic and boiler for radiant. I've seen that before and they melted down the transformers in both units, as well as other cases cooking control boards.
there really shouldn't ever be a shutoff valve between expansion tank and boiler (or water heater/etc), but they make sense for servicing and many people install them(especially on boilers) lol
@@PipeDoctor that will do it, when wired wrong or wrong place with shared/mid run spliced wiring. which is what it seemed like they had going on there.
I priced oil for the heck of it last month, I could have gotten it for 3.99/gallon. It has gone up since then. But $6/gallon is nuts.
You worked him to death mikey. Big workers comp
You ever have one of those days at work where nothing goes right to begin with, but you still nail it?!
Damn I feel bad for the poor kid imagine coming to your first day on the job and having seizures
Need to get better at putting thermostats up lol
Nicknames make themselves shake
And bake Chris
So you just removed out a perfectly good, fairly new, and highly efficient oil boiler with a quality Riello Burner. How may years will it take for ROI ( Return On Investment ). My guess is 15-20 years. Good job lining your pocket Mikey, just because you are scared of OIL!
Wow really feel bad for Chris. Hope he gets well. Mike can you do a future video on how you go about getting together a parts list for a new boiler install/ replacement. How the conversation might go with the customer on boiler choice. Also do you ever offer zone valves instead of circs?
Thanks
Just wondering why direct fired hot water tank instead of an indirect? Hope Chris is OK.
If you can believe it, I just installed a new oil fired warm air furnace today for a customer. An empty 910 litre oil tank costs over $2300 to fill!
Good to know Ferguson is consistent, state to state... worst supply house ever.... Time sink.
I had a guy twenty years ago work for me. Guy would a have a seizure here and there on job. We called him flipper. Eventually had to let him go after flipper almost drove a van through a house. Every time he went to hospital he lied so they didn’t take his license. Had a helper drive him around. Bad look when he pissed his pants every seizure. Thank god I only let him do new construction. Can’t have flipper pissing his pants in customer house.
No nat gas available by me but 2000sqft house and I burn 500 gallons a year for heat and hot water. Most oil equipment is poorly maintained and out of date, modern equipment can be just as efficient as nat gas. If it was available I would switch only to get rid of the tank and have some extra space in the basement.
No this is a old show but wanted to comment was left to do regular maintenance on trusted customer oil furnace wile he had some routine test done niebors came over to tell me to finish work and lock up the customer died during the test 😢God wat a shock small community these customers were like friends more than customers
Hey Mikey, any updates on Chris???
really could have saved money and just convert the oil to gas burner. the gas company will install them for you too.
$1000 bucks- Carlin 70,000-230,000 BTU EZ Gas Pro Conversion Burner
27:07 damn she can clean my house. Thoughts and prayers out to the new hire.
Ha ha ha
at ferguson, you the customer are already there and will wait for your needed parts/equipment.... same as when you're standing in a business and they answer the phone and deal with them first.
not all do that or place the phone on hold, but that puts most people off.
@@PipeDoctor yes and no, the truck may be making scheduled deliveries to many waiting for parts or even to other stores with people waiting for their parts? make one guy wait or potentially many? it sucks, but that happens when understaffed or nobody has credentials or skill for tow motors or not the warehouse. they don't often let newbie hires(temp workers) go free-for-all nuts.
