How ZETA GUNDAM Evolved Universal Century (With a Story that Changed EVERYTHING)

  • ZETA GUNDAM is a very different series from the past Gundam anime, you can say that it's more mature... it's a story that Tomino and his crew had more time to plan and execute and even though it's a series that has existed for more than 3 decades, the way that its themes are structured feel very relevant today.
And in this video, Absa tells us why he thinks that Zeta Gundam is one of the best sequels in all of anime and one of the best entries in all of Universal Century since it expanded the panorama for earthnoids and spacenois and even brought a lot of new layers to the conflict between humans, newtypes and mobile suits.

I think it's implied that Paptimus Scirocco's psychic attack is what destroyed Camille, but I actually think that it's actually a misdirection. I think that Scirocco's attack was actually blocked by the Newtypes who connected with Camille, and they gave to Camille what he always wanted.
Camille never wanted to fight and previously always just wanted love and connection with people. At about the middle point of the show Camille got drug through the emotional mud of war and by the mid-end point of the show he has become super delusional, even telling Fa some seriously disturbing comments eluding to him disconnecting from himself, and accepting a role for himself out of his own emotionally shattered and delusional state of mind.
Camille at the very end is Camille returning to himself. Sure, he definitely seems amnesiac, but he seems happy and more the Camille he was before the war started.

@@cosmicturban2797 As much as I loved Unicorn, I have to give the edge to Zeta. Partly because it was a bigger risk for its time than Unicorn, partly because the final 2 episodes of Zeta are my favorite final battle in any Gundam show, partly because Bask/Paptimus/Yazan/Haman is just an incredible cast of awesome antagonists that present so many different ways of being evil. Zeta's stories/characters continuously getting repackaged (most blatantly with 00 season 2 basically being "Zeta with a happy ending" and IBO season 2 basically being "Zeta if Char was guiding AEUG instead of Quattro", and I'm not casting shade on either of those shows for that; IBO is what I recommend these days for people who haven't seen any Gundam before) also makes it more foundational for enjoying the broader breadth of Gundam, though that might change with more time since Unicorn is still fairly new.

I agree. Probably the hardest transition to make back in 1987 was how dramatically the Federation fell to the corruption and evil of the Titans. Stardust Memory shows us how that evil started, and how it festered. It starts with the violation of the Antarctic Treaty's prohibition on atomic weapons. We see politics play out in Jaburo, with Kowen's faction becoming the fall guys for Federation blunders. When Stardust gets kicked off at Kompei Island and the Naval Review gets nuked, we see the desire for vengeance take hold; Monsha's torture of the Zeon POW in the lower decks of the Albion show us that this isn't a very principled Federation anymore. They cut deals with ruthless criminals like Cima Garahau. By the end of the story, we see folks like Nakohha Nakato start to appear, guys who are willing to pull guns on their own, just to advance the takeover. We see the ruthlessness of Bosk Om as a Federation officer, who uses that Solar System to shoot both Zeon and Federation alike...anything to advance the coup. By the time Stardust Memory ends, we have Kou in a Kangaroo court, Bosk Om and Jamotiov taking their respective places as leaders of the Titans task force, and the transition was complete.

Honestly, I don't actually think that Zeta was more mature than the 1979 original. Part of the charm of this franchise is that it has actually done a wonderful job of having surprisingly deep themes. One of my favorite scenes in the original Gundam was when Amuro meets his mother in a field hospital on earth, and two Zeon soldiers arrive. There was a lot that was said in this scene in a remarkably tight package. I also felt the same way when Amuro meets Ramba Ral for the first time, and Ral casually lifts his pancho to find Amuro clutching a pistol under his belt, and just nods. I watched Zeta first, and I was expecting a "kiddy" experience when I went back to the first MSG, and was thoroughly surprised by the emotional and psychological depth from the very first episode. The original show's strongest theme in and of itself was about becoming mature in the midst of an uncompromising situation.

    • @Kasperthedancer
      @Kasperthedancer 11 місяців тому

Because it was not. In 079 Amuro whined for 1 episode. In Zeta all characters whining for f**king at least 50. There are pointless fights with some unrealistic TransGundamFormers. All young characters do same mistakes 4-5 times. Camille screams 'I cannot just kill people!' and letting his sexual interests go when killing literally hundreds of Zion men and do not gives a f. The plot is very weak and repeats both 079 and Zeta ideas for 2-10 times during the show. For example, Four literally died twice. Nevertheless. first episodes until they leave Earth for the first time is fine + 2 last episodes are also ok.

    • @gooseabuse
      @gooseabuse 10 місяців тому

I'd say its actually less mature in many ways. The main thing that comes to mind is the villains and their motivations. Zeon on top of being just so aesthetically cool were fighting for independence and had a cool old world charm. Its only later when Gihran Zabi opens up to his father do you see what a psycho he is and even his own father seems to find it distasteful. The titans literally just start punching everyone in the face so you know they're the bad guys. I think the idea of the earth federation abusing its power was good they just expressed it in juvenile ways.

Calling the humor of the first chunk of ZZ stupid hurt me though, haha. I can definitely see someone getting whiplash if they jumped straight from Zeta to ZZ; I watched a few of the OVAs before ZZ, so that helped things settle in my head a bit and cleanse my palate. Not having the expectation of simply being more Zeta lets you enjoy ZZ for what it wants to be, and I think the initial wacky tone contrasts incredibly with the way the main characters mature and deal with the brutal war they're sucked into.
And no one will ever tell me that "I'm Judau Ashta and I'm ... cutting class" isn't the funniest thing that anyone in Gundam has ever said.

Hahah ZZ Gundam probably is not that bad as people like to think... I believe the problem is that with Zeta's ending we were all expecting for ZZ to be suuuper serious and dense but Tomini went for a full 180 turn. And even though I loved the super eighties style of Chara, I really didn't appreciate the first half of the series... but as a whole I did liked it. As a matter of fact, I would really love for a compilation movie that removed some of the slapstick humor of the first episodes (you know... all of the bizarre encounters with early Mashymre Cello) and actually told us what was Char doing with Neo Zeon.

A bit of Zeta Gundam triva: The Final Mystery of Z--according to the background materials, the Titans had a huge base in New Guinea. The Aldomura (w/Kamille on board) originally intended to attack the base, but for some reason, was diverted to Hong Kong. So, what was going on in New Guinea during the bulk of the War? Had to have been something important or AEUG/Karaba wouldn't have considered raiding it.
The other Mystery takes place during Ep.#36 of the TV Series; the attack on Killimanjaro. There is a close-up of a computer screen near the end of the ep.; on the screen is a scrolling list of all the Cyber-Newtypes controlled by the Titans. The last to appear is Kim Kerin "No.3", who operated out of the Titans' facility at Pyongyang, Korea. Kim does not appear anywhere in the show (I have no idea if she appears in any of the spinoff manga.), and I always wondered what happened to her. Such is the stuff of fanfiction, I suppose...

I honestly think AEUG is a lot better than you give them credit for--how could they not be, when their opponents are Space Nazis/NKVD?!?--really, their shadiest actions are how tied they are to Anahiem Electronics. AE is really the "unsung villain" of the UC period--they are pre-WW1 Krupp Arms. They'll build MS for _anybody,_ and War is simply the fastest way to make maximum profit. _Stardust Memories_ drives this home when AE built the series of Gundams for the Federation...and when the Feds didn't want all of them, AE rebuilt the last one and turned around and sold it to the *Delaz Fleet!* That's some serious Balls, business-wise!

This is what I am watching now, about 30 episodes in I think. The early episodes really are an unfocused chore and Kamille is utterly insufferable. Worse, I have no idea why the characters are doing things, why they are going places and what they're plans are. It is just too much a fight of the week.
Out of nowhere we visit a gassed colony where Lieutenant Emma realízes the real brutality of the titans. Then we're back to random fights, then the trap at the old Federation headquarters, then more random fights, then two separate female cyber newtypes for Kamille to face and lose.
Thus far the writing of Zeta Gundam Define is far superior. More info on the mobile suit designs, actual intrigue, plotting, schemes, and strategy. Everything has a purpose. Although I hear the final third of the anime is really good so looking forward to it.

Zeta is great and I love it. It's right up there with 0079 as S-rank Gundam.
One thing, however, that I noticed is that it didn't seem particularly well planned out. I feel like this is a problem with a lot of 80s anime, especially from Sunrise. There's a lot of things that should have been explained better. There's a lot of side characters who don't contribute much to the story. There's a lot of subplots that go nowhere or character arcs that abruptly end.
Take Jerrid for example. I really expected him to be the Char to Camille's Amuro, but Jerrid never came off as a threat, let alone a rival to Camille. He was constantly incompetent, yet still was treated like he was an ace by the Titans. He didn't even rise to the occasion at the end, dying pretty unceremoniously.
The first OP really made it seem like the original side characters from 0079 would play a big part in the show. But they pretty much made glorified cameos then disappeared. If Sunrise and Tomino knew those characters wouldn't be used, why even feature them in the opening?
And, like I said, I feel that in a lot of Sunrise anime from the 80s. I really enjoyed Dragonar, but I question why they even bothered creating 3 main pilots when 2 of them could have been written out without having much of an effect on the story. Or how the love interest (the surrogate Sayla) doesn't really do much apart from be the love interest to the hero and sister of the surrogate Char.
I assume Sunrise was pretty chaotic at the time, based on the ridiculous amount of anime they produced in the 80s. So maybe the writing was more of a seat of the pants situations and the shows were not well planned before they started pencil to paper.

The "Kill 'em All" Tomino moniker WAS NOT earned by _Zeta Gundam._ Tomino had done a cast wipeout at the end of _Aura Battler Dunbine_ a couple years before. Though the real roots of the nickname came from his tenure on the infamous _Space Runaway IDEON_ (1980-81), which had the most savage ending episodes in all mecha anime. WOMEN & CHILDREN of the cast were regularly targeted by the bad guys...and while some fought, most were *slaughtered*, literally onscreen, in graphic death scenes that never been seen in a mecha show to that date. The bad guys bought it equally hard by the end, in what turned out to be a galaxy-wide mutual annihilation.

The more Gundam we see, the more important Anaheim Electronics becomes to the Universal Century. There is no talk of Anaheim in the original Gundam. Zeta is when we first get introduced to it. It basically unmasks Anaheim as a greater villain than either the Federation, or Zeon, or anyone ever was.

Really enjoying your retrospectives on these. I agree that second only to the original series, Zeta is probably the most important Gundam series in the broad scheme of things. It's still one of my favorite anime series', even if I will admit that there's plenty about it that maybe hasn't aged as well as some other parts, which is why I was really let down by New Translation's lost potential as a fully updated, streamlined retelling of the series (rather than the weird hodge podge of new animation with old clips and this disjointed attempt to condense the TV series' narrative.). It's a sobering story about how many of the dynamics of the power structure in the Universal Century still went unresolved by the end of the original series, as happy an ending as it was. Also Zeta itself is just an awesome design.
I definitely think, if possible, you should cover Double Zeta as well. It might be one of the most divisive Gundam series' of all time (though to be fair, Zeta isn't everyone's cup of tea as well.) but I think it was really important in its own way. It might not have pleased die hard fans at the time, but its appeal to younger viewers (at least initially) did open up Gundam to a whole new age group of Japanese kids who cut their teeth on ZZ, and went in to see the rest from there. I'd say ZZ laid the ground work for Gundams' potentially broader appeal, which for better or for worse is an important milestone. Plus these days, I kind of appreciate the brief tonal whip lash as a break from Zeta's bleak af end. To me, it's seeing things from the new perspective of Judau and the other kids, who in time catch on to the dire stakes of the whole situation as the tone corrects itself back to something more in line with Zeta over time. It's still got plenty of problems and things I wish had gone differently (I strongly feel Amuro should have had a larger role, if ANY role in this series, to show how he got over his fear of space. It feels like there was a whole story related to Amuro's growth from that lost young man he was in Zeta to the grounded leader he is by CCA that we missed out on. I do still also wish Kamille's recovery was a larger plot point and that maybe he returned...but at the same time him exiting stage right makes sense. Also the whole Dublin incident is just a mess imo.)
It's funny too that as we see in Unicorn, ZZ has potentially some of the most messed up background plot elements hidden within its mostly lighter tone.

I agree about the importance of Zeta. If Zeta didn't work, Gundam would have ended right then and there, and we'd have nothing else. The mecha genre advanced so much in those years between MS Gundam and Zeta, the series had to adapt to what was going on, or the fans would forget about Gundam just like Manzinger and Yamato. So many new stories like SDF Macross and Five Star Stories upped the ante considerably. Newer, more elegant designs were needed, including transformables. Edgier characters were needed, especially women. Better animations and fight scenes were needed. And Zeta delivered on all fronts, probably saving the franchise.

      Why?
I get the first half. I don’t like it much myself.
But the series gets pretty good during the latter half, and I absolutely love the moments between Haman and Judau; their philosophical debate during their final fight is truly fascinating. Amuro and Char’s debate was much more personal, mixed in with grand ideas.
Whereas you can tell that Haman and Judau don’t hold that same level of personal animosity (the series makes it clear that Haman thinks of Judau as the person she wishes she could have been; there’s also some weird romantic attachment there) so it’s all grand ideas. Judau sees Haman for her potential; what she could have been. She could have United the Earth sphere peacefully.
It’s one of my favorite Gundam debates.
