I can’t get behind dismissing a great series like Stardust Memory by saying “if you don’t want to see this character, skip this series.” There’s so much great stuff in 0083 Stardust Memory, from the Top Gun vibe, the epic early 90s r&b and rock soundtrack, the cool Zeon insurgency story and seeing the Federation develop its more totalitarian branch, having the more NASA-esq Gundam designs and a focus on mechanical realism and a big focus on the engineering itself (with suit damage and modifications playing important plot roles), and more. Nina’s definitely a crap character, but the series itself is so detailed and cool, I’d recommend it as an essential. Also not covering ZZ at all and saying to skip it is blasphemy! The first arc is a jarring tone change from Zeta for sure, but the comedic tone is fine, it’s like early Dragon Ball. But after the first arc it gets right back into the meaty U.C. style. The stakes rise again, big tragic events occur (including the most visceral and intense colony drop scene of the series), Haman delivers one of the coolest villain portrayals in the series, Judau develops into a great protagonist (and the least angsty Gundam pilot!), and some essential lore for Unicorn is established. ZZ is criminally underrated, all due to like 15 episodes with some slapstick humor.
I haven't watched z or zz Gundam yet, but I can support you about Stardust. I was watching the original Gundam on Netflix, then I jumped into Stardust as a bridge to Z and it was fantastic. If we are critical, the rivalry between Amuro and Char was "you re good, but not as good as me" during all first series. However, the rivalry between Gato and Uraki was about ideology and the mean girl. Also, the cast in 0083 was more realistic and charismatic than 0079. By the way, is more interesting watching a Newby pilot failing in hard mission than a Newtype being the winner in every battle.
Definitely agree with your points on Gundam 0083. Its one of my favorites. I like Gundam Zeta but I never watched ZZ because I'm honestly a dub snob. I just can't watch Sub at all unless its a fight scene. But great points

I'm in early 2023 and there's a new gundam that came out, the witch from Mercury. I watched the 1st episode out of curiosity and couldn't stop watching until I finished the first season in 2 days. The animation looks like it's the best it's been in any gundam (from what I see from your list at least), all of the mobile suits designs are absolutely sick, I love the intreegue and all the political machinations of the megacorp that the show follows in stead of having a full blown war, I love the characters,... I can't wait for the second part of the season to drop and in the meanwhile, I guess I'm finally going to get into the other gundam shows. I thought I'd start with the OG but, even though I loved the 1st episode, it's really an old anime and I want to get a little more invested in the franchise before going through that animation (Although I still really liked it, which goes to show how good it is because I put animation very high on my personal list of what makes a good anime). So I might check Irone blood orphans first cause it still looks really good, but it seems much newer in it's animation and direction.
Thank you so much for making this. Ya boi is relatively new to anime in general and the only mecha anime I have seen is Full Metal Panic. I have a friend at work who is a huge Gundam fan and he said I should start with Thunderbolt and your video has further helped me on how to approach this franchise. Thanks.
I remember watching the original Gundam series when I was 10 in Italy..so I must be your dad's age more or less ;-) I now have the DVDs and been following it ever since...
I used to watch the original series before school back in 1979 along with Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato). 42 years later I'm still building Gunpla and just finished rewatching IBO for the hundredth time. I have a half-built HG Vidar sitting 3 feet away and still need to panel line the Barbatos Lupus Rex I finished a few nights ago. Anyway great video man, I'm sure it was a huge help to people new to the phenomenon that is Gundam.
Thanks Bro. You make me want to watch Gundam again. After long time doesn't watch it. I already save this video. Will follow from your advice if I want watch again those Gundam series, also done subscribe your channel
I watched IBO, and it was great, so I figured I'd do UC in chronological order. Hoo boy, The Origin really feels like they want you to have a handle on the world already; they throw _so_ many names of people and factions at you with zero explanation, and I just gave up.
Wings are like the de facto of many 90s kids introduction to Gundam series, which i think its global. But man I think the chad title may go to Kou Uraki. Stardust memory is my Hail mary of 90s Gundam shows. I even screamed "GATOOOOO!!" to my cat sometimes lmao
my first gundam was wing and im planning to rewatch it soon. my favorite has got to be unicorn tho simply cus theres so much drama and meaningful deaths that affect banaghers decisions. hathaway is the next best thing for gundam since unicorn and i cant wait for the next episodes. also, i can never get into gundam seed simply because i hate the character designs and pink gas bombs in space
I dont agree with the comment saying you can skip z gundam and zz gundam, those two are the main core of gundam series, and what helped carry the series through the whole 80s decade (the golden era of anime) Also, forgot to mention, gundam NT movie is the ending for gundam unicorn,,, it is related and considered a sequel. People that plan to watch hathaway's flash need to watch all of the UC content. Fun fact, did you know hathaway appears as a young jkid in ZGUNDAM?? he drowns and dies, then is revived by his mother (mirai) who was the main pilot of the whitebase spaceship in the ORIGINAL gundam series of 1979. Also hathaway plays a big role in the gundam movie char's counter attack, he actually MURDERS amuro ray's girlfriend, stricken with grief for losing a dear friend, hatahway is actually a " bad guy:" . Alot of the events that are happenning in hathaway's flash are connected to the plot in gundam unicorn (laplaces box) , I think netflix made a huge mistake releasing this movie, without first releasing the movies you need towatch to understand it.
At least here in Brazil, we have the trilogy compilation of Gundam 0079 and unicorn. But yeah, if you have any intention to watch Hathway's Flash, you need to watch almost the entire UC timeline. Starting with Gundam 0079, Z, ZZ and CCA. Origins and Unicorn can be skiped if you want to just understand HF. Also, although Origins is a prequel to Gundam 0079, a lot of stuff only makes sense if you know what happens next, so I wouldn't recomend origins before 0079, or at least, recomend origins without recomending 0079.
@@TheMaxinR I saw origins BEFORE watching the compilation movies, and Immediattely recognized a lot of the charcaters... Like Garma Zabi, who is killed in 0079, but in origins he is one of the major characters... Also Commander Ramba Ral, is one of the gundam 0079's main rivals on earth, while in Origin he plays a crucial part in helping casval (char) and his sister escape the zabi's. After watching origin, suddenly 0079 compilation movies made a lot of sense, and you were more emotionally attached to these otherwise forgettable characters. Their deaths made alot more impact. Not to mention Origin is an official OVA, so higher budget, higher animation and art quality less episodes, it is TOTALLY worth the watch, and is one of the BEST gundam-related animations made.
zz gundam is worth giving it the time despite its shitty handful of first episodes. i think its important to understand what the world looks like when amuro and char arent fucking things up. judau is my favorite protag ever because he wears his heart on his sleeves, he cares deeply about those around him and believes in a truly better world. it picks up and the story is the most effecting gundam story ive seen yet
I'm new to the Gundam series and started off with IBO, then OO and now on Seed Destiny... So for me I running back wards so far tho from this vid i can go from the start and make more sense of it all 😅
*Gundam Thunderbolt* is the best for newcomer. not too many episode just one movie. pretty much captivate all the essence of what gundam series is about and on more on serious tone. westernize abit on the character animation too. honestly imo all star war movie combine cant beat this piece of art of a movie. the scene where Daryl test pilot the Psycho Zaku with that song was just amazing cinematic photography
started with Gundam Wing, fell in love with the music and the action scenes obviously, same with 00 Gundam (season 1 anyway) which had equally legendary music and more impactful and memorable scenes (Lockon... Lockon...), though Wing definitely has better villains (innovators and "Ribbons" were terrible)... all in all tho, I still prefer Macross as the superior mech anime (real Macross, not Robotech)...
Last year? I actually watched the entire UC. I just haven't watched Hathaway's Flash. My favorite is Unicorn, 0080: War in the Pocket, Zeta, and 0079 in that order. I should watch the Non-UC Gundams. I already watched Gundam Wing. That was pretty cool.
@@Yiman To be fair? I feel like the UC is flawed and the alternate series look a bit more interesting. Especially stuff like 00 and Turn A Gundam. I should also check out IBO as well. However, I am actually more of a Macross Fan. LOL Have you seen any Macross series?
Don't sleep on SEED, it gives off some Wing vibes and hits a lot of similar themes with more action. Destiny should have just followed Kira, though not as good as SEED it's still pretty good. G Gundam should be placed on a high priority to watch as well. Is it campy? Yes. Can you tell its main point was to sell toys? Yes. Are some of the MS designs a bit over the top? Definitely. Is it absolute mindless fun with amazing MS fights? Fuck yeah.
@@zakkmylde1712 Oh! Don't worry. I plan on watching those very soon. People always have very nasty things to say about SEED, but I don't give a fuck about what armchair critics think. They are nerds who probably don't touch grass. I'll keep everything you said in mind. G Gundam though I have seen snippets of and I really like it. It's badass asf.
@@Bacchus8699 I don't understand why people talk so much shit on SEED. I intentionally put off watching it for a long time because everyone talked so shitty about it and I wish I had watched it sooner. The beginning of G Gundam is awesome but when you get towards the end smoke a little extra and itll make it even better. Some of the most badass fight scenes in all of anime.
Respect for this vid. An already watched some you suggested like IBO. Solid quality imo. But wing on toonami.. these guys won't understand that level of hype!
yeah thats one the biggest misconceptions ppl have before they get into gundam! there are definitely so many genres that different series covers like drama, tragedy, adventure, and even comedy. Theres a series for everyone!
robot anime is more than giant robot fight like gundam/getter robo/guren lagaan/macross/fafner....... seriously why people from west underestimate robot anime so much. this genre is nothing to you ?
Mecha genre has three sub categories. real robot, super robot, and hybrid robot. most of Gundam is real robot series aside from Mobile Fighter G. Mazinger Z and Guren Langan is an example of super robot. Evangelion is hybrid robot series.
9 years old I would set the VHS to record gundam seed playing on adult swim while I slept and would watch them the next day , 26 now . probably my first 'real' anime
as 80-90s gen, for sure Gundam Wing was my starting point, then come Gundam Seed/SD in mid school & Gundam 00 in my high school. Tbh, the best starting point for this present gen (gen z) would be Gundam IBO imo, despite losing some of the coolest aspects of Gundam series, BEAM SPAMS (LOL). I wanna say Gundam Seed tbh, but it was way too soap opera sometimes even though arguably still have the best Gundam line up designs imo.
if you want to fully understand and appreciate Hathaway i would watch mobile suit gundam, zeta, and char's counterattack. if you just want to understand the bare necessities, just watch Char's Counterattack
i remember knowing about gundam alittle bit growing up but Seed was the first to get me hooked. i also remember the sd gundam stuff but never got into it for obvious reasons lol IBO at times made it rain in my room. also i really prefer the animation of seed, 00 and ibo. also my first gunpla was a RG strike freedom. still gotta put the rifles together though lol next i got the death sythe and strike freedom SDs and got the 1/100 barbatos lupis rex and HG ∞Justice. starting to think i might have a problem lol
I got into Gundam because of Gundam Wing, it kind of holds a place in my heart, but I also wouldn't tell anyone to watch it when Gundam 00 is basically an updated version of Gundam Wing with and is 100% less cringe. It's like Star Wars Ep 1-3, Gundam Wing is the starting point for a generation, but it's SOOO cringe and like Star Wars, my favorite series ended up being the oldest series which also looks like crap but I think it's still great, if you can get past the animation. 08th MS Team is probably the best start for people that want to get into the UC era Gundam and 0080 is such a good, sweet, short but meaningful story. The UC era is just so good about showing the senselessness of war and how no one gets out of war without scars (external or internal).
"I don't have time to watch gundam" You could always play the games, lol. I remember that ps1 gundam char's counter attack game that pulled me into UC.
Short version: just watch UC Origin Gundam 0079 Zeta / ZZ Chars Counter Attack Unicorn narrative Hathaway F91 ….. Das it unless you get bored and want to watch the side stories
yup the main story UC timeline canonical order 👍 with Hathaway flash which I did watch I love how with the Intro timeline run down history they give you at the beginning of MSG HF there using char’s counter attack as a second origin point obviously because of Hathaway being a big part in the second neo zeon war but I do love that fact I like that char casval’s beginning was the first origin point and char’s rebellion and death is the second origin point still showing how char really was the main over all important character figure of the earlier UC Timeline like darth vader-anakin skywalker was to Star Wars EP 1 to EP 6 was I like to call everything that happened up to MSG CCA the first UC timeline saga CCA is still pretty much the epilogue to that first UC saga Timeline now starting with Gundam origin. Not to mentioned in all of the Gundam UC titles history char’s name is the only one to have actual be in a title well aside from Hathaway now that is So char and Hathaway the only two to have there names in title awesome.
Yeah exactly. The last thing I'd recommend someone to watch after Hathaway is an AU, even though I like some. I don't recommend starting with origin, just buckle up and go release order at least for 0079 to ZZ/Char's Counterattack. After that just watch whatever in whichever order.
I kinda held off on the whole uc timeline till after i had finished Wing and giving X a shot. Zeta Gundam was something crazy coming from the Og Gundam series (didnt see they made movies). Tried to pick up ZZ but the no dub and no kamille kinda turned me off although judau was a nice lil breath of fresh air.

Hathaway is the best looking piece of Gundam media by far, but 0083 and 08th MS Team are also very good if you prefer the 90s style.
Best gundam video right along side crunchyrolls videoooo
So I made the right decision starting with IBO. I'm only 10 episodes in but I love it.
Thank you so much for making this. Ya boi is relatively new to anime in general and the only mecha anime I have seen is Full Metal Panic. I have a friend at work who is a huge Gundam fan and he said I should start with Thunderbolt and your video has further helped me on how to approach this franchise. Thanks.
Thunderbolt is definitely a good starting place
I remember watching the original Gundam series when I was 10 in Italy..so I must be your dad's age more or less ;-) I now have the DVDs and been following it ever since...
I love gundam but I never got into the UC universe. Thanks for the list man
I used to watch the original series before school back in 1979 along with Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato).
I just started straight up with Gundam, and it's cash so far. IBO is damn cool too
I watched IBO, and it was great, so I figured I'd do UC in chronological order.
Hoo boy, The Origin really feels like they want you to have a handle on the world already; they throw _so_ many names of people and factions at you with zero explanation, and I just gave up.
Start with the original series. It slowly introduces everything in an easily understandable way
God I love Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team; I have every single gundam from 00, so damn nice!
Amazing recommendations man! Love IBO and Thunderbolt !
my first gundam was wing and im planning to rewatch it soon. my favorite has got to be unicorn tho simply cus theres so much drama and meaningful deaths that affect banaghers decisions. hathaway is the next best thing for gundam since unicorn and i cant wait for the next episodes. also, i can never get into gundam seed simply because i hate the character designs and pink gas bombs in space
I dont agree with the comment saying you can skip z gundam and zz gundam,
those two are the main core of gundam series, and what helped carry the series through the whole 80s decade (the golden era of anime)
Also, forgot to mention, gundam NT movie is the ending for gundam unicorn,,, it is related and considered a sequel.
Alot of the events that are happenning in hathaway's flash are connected to the plot in gundam unicorn (laplaces box) ,
I think netflix made a huge mistake releasing this movie, without first releasing the movies you need towatch to understand it.
@@Thewickedjon I don’t know how you can watch the original and think Ramba Ral is a forgettable character.
gundam zz is my favorite gundam show entirely (tho im watching turn a rn and thats pretty up there too!)
zz gundam is worth giving it the time despite its shitty handful of first episodes. i think its important to understand what the world looks like when amuro and char arent fucking things up. judau is my favorite protag ever because he wears his heart on his sleeves, he cares deeply about those around him and believes in a truly better world. it picks up and the story is the most effecting gundam story ive seen yet
One of those, "If I could like it twice, I would" videos.
I'm new to the Gundam series and started off with IBO, then OO and now on Seed Destiny... So for me I running back wards so far tho from this vid i can go from the start and make more sense of it all 😅
Iron blooded orphans fuck yea by far one of the darkest stories!!!
Great work my dude 👌 I would said Gundam origin 1st my self but also haven't watched 3/4 of what u mentioned and will be doing so asap
Glad to see some Gundam fans enjoying their life, instead of thinking about the war to come.
started with Gundam Wing, fell in love with the music and the action scenes obviously, same with 00 Gundam (season 1 anyway) which had equally legendary music and more impactful and memorable scenes (Lockon... Lockon...), though Wing definitely has better villains (innovators and "Ribbons" were terrible)... all in all tho, I still prefer Macross as the superior mech anime (real Macross, not Robotech)...
i imagine most of us did lol XD wing was like the 3rd anime i ever watched
Last year? I actually watched the entire UC. I just haven't watched Hathaway's Flash. My favorite is Unicorn, 0080: War in the Pocket, Zeta, and 0079 in that order. I should watch the Non-UC Gundams. I already watched Gundam Wing. That was pretty cool.
yesss UC will always reign supreme but i would check out series like IBO or 00. those series are great as well❤
@@Yiman To be fair?
But wing on toonami.. these guys won't understand that level of hype!
didn't know Gundam have a interesting story line I thought it was only about giant robot fight robot fights with flashy animations, ptw it goes
yeah thats one the biggest misconceptions ppl have before they get into gundam! there are definitely so many genres that different series covers like drama, tragedy, adventure, and even comedy. Theres a series for everyone!
robot anime is more than giant robot fight like gundam/getter robo/guren lagaan/macross/fafner....... seriously why people from west underestimate robot anime so much. this genre is nothing to you ?
It's the exact opposite of shounen anime. Most Gundam shows have a really heavy storyline. It's not always good, but it's usually very deep.
Mecha genre has three sub categories. real robot, super robot, and hybrid robot. most of Gundam is real robot series aside from Mobile Fighter G.
Mazinger Z and Guren Langan is an example of super robot.
Evangelion is hybrid robot series.
I've only seen two mecha anime Cross ange and fafner
Don't worry I'll make sure to watch these anime
I never even knew about this netflix gundam seeries till now. lol
you skipped Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative which was a sequel movie to Unicorn. Amazing movie, as a gundam fan, you cannot miss
My boy, I also took a photo of real life Unicorn Gundam in Tokyo
Ah chad the red comet omg, my fav of all time
Im gonna start my journey watching Gundam wish me luck
9 years old I would set the VHS to record gundam seed playing on adult swim while I slept and would watch them the next day , 26 now . probably my first 'real' anime
Jesus I felt like I got Isekaid back to my calculus classes with all these timelines and number LOL
08 ms team, turn A, and iron blooded orphans are the best
A+ video sir.
Also, NT Gundam should be in there, not the best one by any means but it's tied into Unicorn directly, so it needs to be in there lol
Idk dude, I'm stuck with OO loop hole. I've been watching that series like 6 time already. The english dub on that series is the best anime dub IMO.
I've rewatched OO once a year practically for 5-6 years. I feel ya
If you wanna watch the Trailblazer movie, its available on Gundaminfo channel (subbed, no dub) : ua-cam.com/video/ShXB8qJktZk/v-deo.html
Im gonna watch gundam now I'll come back when i finish
Hathaway had me at the children of men-esque battle
War in the pocket is a masterpiece
yup you have great taste👌 easily on my top 3 forsure. that Bernie scene at the end always gets me😭😭😭
G Gundam, Gundam Wing and The original Gundam for me
as 80-90s gen, for sure Gundam Wing was my starting point, then come Gundam Seed/SD in mid school & Gundam 00 in my high school.
Tbh, the best starting point for this present gen (gen z) would be Gundam IBO imo, despite losing some of the coolest aspects of Gundam series, BEAM SPAMS (LOL). I wanna say Gundam Seed tbh, but it was way too soap opera sometimes even though arguably still have the best Gundam line up designs imo.
i had exactly the same way to get into gundams and i agree, even though there is quite a lot music in seed - the story was the best
wing, EW, and seed are the best for me.
The original build fighters was pretty hype tho ngl
Actually my question was, what should I watch BEFORE Hathaway? I've only seen Origin, Orphans, and a bit of SEED.
if you want to fully understand and appreciate Hathaway i would watch mobile suit gundam, zeta, and char's counterattack. if you just want to understand the bare necessities, just watch Char's Counterattack
@@Yiman Thanks!
@@wtfronsson Watch the trilogy movie of the Original UC79 Gundam. It's the entire series compiled into three movies.
IBO is a classic love it
i remember knowing about gundam alittle bit growing up but Seed was the first to get me hooked. i also remember the sd gundam stuff but never got into it for obvious reasons lol IBO at times made it rain in my room. also i really prefer the animation of seed, 00 and ibo. also my first gunpla was a RG strike freedom. still gotta put the rifles together though lol next i got the death sythe and strike freedom SDs and got the 1/100 barbatos lupis rex and HG ∞Justice. starting to think i might have a problem lol
started with wing, then G fighter then OG movies then IBO
I just finish the new movie hathaway yah the animation is great
When You Said Asian Brothers got introduced to Gundam Through SEED can't be more right cuz' Here I am .
You won a new subscribe nice video
The UC era is just so good about showing the senselessness of war and how no one gets out of war without scars (external or internal).
this was rad
war in the pocket, stardust memories, unicorn
"I don't have time to watch gundam"
You could always play the games, lol. I remember that ps1 gundam char's counter attack game that pulled me into UC.
Short version: just watch UC
Origin
Gundam 0079
Zeta / ZZ
Chars Counter Attack
Unicorn
narrative
Hathaway
F91
…..
Das it unless you get bored and want to watch the side stories
yup the main story UC timeline canonical order 👍
with Hathaway flash which I did watch I love how with the Intro timeline run down history they give you at the beginning of MSG HF there using char’s counter attack as a second origin point obviously because of Hathaway being a big part in the second neo zeon war but I do love that fact
I like that char casval’s beginning was the first origin point and char’s rebellion and death is the second origin point still showing how char really was the main over all important character figure of the earlier UC Timeline like darth vader-anakin skywalker was to Star Wars EP 1 to EP 6 was
I like to call everything that happened up to MSG CCA the first UC timeline saga CCA is still pretty much the epilogue to that first UC saga Timeline now starting with Gundam origin.
Not to mentioned in all of the Gundam UC titles history char’s name is the only one to have actual be in a title well aside from Hathaway now that is
So char and Hathaway the only two to have there names in title awesome.
Yeah exactly. The last thing I'd recommend someone to watch after Hathaway is an AU, even though I like some.
I don't recommend starting with origin, just buckle up and go release order at least for 0079 to ZZ/Char's Counterattack. After that just watch whatever in whichever order.
All I can say about victory gundam is don't trust the opening song
I freaking love that the first gandam that I thought I watched... was code geass...
Gundam 0083 is actually really damn good.
Gundam wing was my first
man Hathaway set place in DAVAO my F ING home town
my life is complete
I kinda held off on the whole uc timeline till after i had finished Wing and giving X a shot. Zeta Gundam was something crazy coming from the Og Gundam series (didnt see they made movies). Tried to pick up ZZ but the no dub and no kamille kinda turned me off although judau was a nice lil breath of fresh air.
Not sure if eureka seven and flcl is a gundam or mecha but it’s the best ones I’ve watched
Eureka is a mecha
