What Video Encoder to Use to Record Gameplay In Streamlabs
To make this straightforward, If you’re using any Nvidia card past the GTX 600, which was released in 2012, so likely any Nvidia card being used on a semi-new PC, you’re going to pick Nvenc H.264. This means you’re using a special chip on your graphics card to encode footage, this chip is separate and just used solely for encoding decoding, so it won’t affect your gameplay performance.
And, If you’re using a graphics card from before that, you’ll likely use x264 which will be using your CPU to encode or decode.
What Bitrate to use to Record Gameplay In Streamlabs
In the Encoder settings, you have Rate control, this will be CBR by default, which means you’re recording at the same bitrate all the time, and below that you set the bitrate of your choice, I found for 1080p 60fps that 16,000 - 18,000 gave me excellent quality for editing my gameplay footage later, but any higher was useless, but 8000 bitrate still gave me useable clean footage so if your PC is struggling, start there.
If you want to get a little more complicated in recordings, instead select CQP, which in short is smarter and will change the bitrate as needed so you’re not wasting data, this does mean rather than setting a bitrate you’re setting a CQ level, in short, low numbers here mean higher quality footage, high numbers mean lower quality, I found recording at 15 gave me footage that was perfect, and indistinguishable to viewers, but 20 will also give you totally useable footage, if your PC can’t handle 15, start at 20, and slowly lower it.

Hope this helps get you started, hopefully it's not overwhelming but also not to basic, and hope you don't feel like I'm bullying you into using OBS instead, totally doable with Streamlabs.

I use Streamlabs for a number of reasons, the biggest is that my non techy girlfriend also streams so it makes it easier for her. We're both 50 and trying to learn isn't easy. This video is very helpful for us.
Plus our systems are powerful enough SLOBS doesn't bother them. And the support is awesome.
    This is great information. Thanks

After changing my video settings for recording youtube videos, now my streaming (Twitch) is completely thrown off. Is there a way to maintain both settings within SLOBS? I tried creating multiple Scene Collections & that didn't help.

This is the EXACT video I've been trying to find recently. The other day I reinstalled OBS, but found my gameplay looked like it was recording at 480p (text not even legible). Tried streamlabs again, looked a little better, at least text could be read. But also was trying to see about recording gameplay (via elgato) and camera seperately. Seems like you gotta cheat the system to do that. Will take a look at the settings for OBS and give that a try again as it's less system-intense and my computer is a POS.

Wow! This is great! Thank you so much!
Got a problem, maybe you open my newest video to Total War Warhammer 3 from today. Game is not really laggy, my camera was. Ok now I learned from your video, to record both separately. But why is Total War Warhammer III that complicated to stream? I haven't got this problem with any other game...
At the moment I stream with streamlabs, I did with OBS before, but there was no chance in hell to stream and record Total War Warhammer III.
Do you have any advice oder experience with that game?
    My PC specificaktions:
    AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
    32,0 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
    64-Bit-System
    Windows 10Pro
If my question is too special, it is ok. Thank you anyway.

Please no one use Streamlabs OBS like he's telling you, it just takes up more CPU for no reason compared to regular OBS studio and you can get chat and your activity feed to pop up on OBS if you connect your twitch account (if you wanna stream too)

He literally says in the video that you should use regular obs over streamlabs for that exact reason.

Strange to leave this comment when the whole point of this video, and it’s mentioned multiple times, “hey, you’re using SLOBS, and googled to find SLOBS, but OBS is better.”
I don’t think I ever say to use Streamlabs, just that I’m not here to judge.
EDIT: There are two ways to read "like he's telling you" at first I read it as, "He is telling you to use streamlabs" but now I am thinking he is referring to when I say NOT to use streamlabs. Hard to understand, but either way, I do agree, OBS is better.

@@StreamSchemeNot really that strange that people left comments like this. There shouldn't be tutorials that teach or suggest SLABS at all. No one should use SLABS. Doesn't matter about which is better from technical point of view. I'm simply just the fact how SLABS has bahaved in the past and is still behaving today. Stop pushing SLABS by creating tutorials on it. It hurted the open source community for a long time and it should just be ignored until it's shut down. OBS and nothing else.

    • @StreamScheme

I never pushed it, please actually watch the video, you’ll see I constantly push OBS. That’s why it’s a strange comment to imply that I’m pushing Streamlabs.
This is a guide because people will use it anyway, so if I can make a video where people go to use it and hear how OBS is better without judgement then that’s a good thing right? If someone searches “how to record with Streamlabs” clicks the video and then is told to use OBS.
Also, it’s kinda hard to say OBS or nothing when Streamlabs is one of their largest paying partners funding the project these days. We can all say we hate them, but they’re funding the tools we do like pretty heavily.
