Separate Game, Music, Discord Audio In OBS

- Setting up audio for new streamers is complicated, and confusing, but after hours of work, your mic sounds great, your game is clear, and music, well it’s amazing, you’ve done it!... except your viewers keep screaming at you to fix your audio.
Today, we’re going to be setting up a tool called Sonar For Streamers, that works with OBS or Streamlabs to route your different audio sources carefully into different channels, and then into OBS, allowing you to have much better control over your audio. I am also going to show you how to set up your OBS recordings to have separate audio tracks for your game, music, discord, and microphone audio in OBS.

What are Virtual Audio Channels?
If you’re a beginner think of it like this, when you plug a microphone into your Computer, you get a Microphone Source that you can add to OBS, and if you plug a second Mic in, you get a second microphone source to add as well. Two different sources, two different mics.
Sonar creates new virtual audio sources on your computer, like adding a microphone, but rather than sending your voice to that source, you’re sending your computer programs that create audio, so your games, spotify, google chrome, you name it.
How To Add Global Audio Sources To OBS
Open OBS, Click Settings, go to Audio, and select your microphone.
I want you to remove your mic, and all your other captures, set them to disabled, and instead just add SteelSeries Sonar - Stream to Mic/Aux Audio 1, from there, click apply, and you’ll see this single audio level at the bottom.

To truly make your microphone sound amazing, you’re going to want to learn to use filters in your broadcast software. Now all three of these filters exist in slobs and obs, I’d recommend using them almost all the time, They are Noise Suppression, A limiter, and a Noise gate.
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

I feel like you should have mentioned it wants you to make a steel series account.
Really helpful tips bro! I have a question though. I tried playing a game, but the sound was rerouted to Media instead of Gaming and I cannot change that. Would that be a problem for the stream or recording?
This has worked great besides one issue. This only happens when I try to play call of duty. I have everything set up just as you showed and whenever I load up COD it automatically gets loaded into the MIC channel and for whatever reason it wont allow me to manually move the COD app to the GAME channel. Do you know of a fix for this or why it would be occurring?
Thanks for the awesome vid, just one question: For some reason my mic mix is going in as mono, not stereo, through the stream mix. is there a way to fix that? I'd like to keep the stream mix stereo so that directional audio can be heard on stream :/
This is awesome but what about browser sorce for alerts where do they go there getting doubled
This is godly. i tried to do this myself over a year ago using wave link but never thought to have the stream mix by itself and have the separate audio inputs off the 1st track. Super appreciate this tutorial mate!
really love your content! you make such helpful, easy to follow videos and i've really appreciated having such a vast library of helpful content to learn from. just started streaming and honestly couldn't have done it without your vids!
I’m immediately sending this to my friends, we’re all using sonar because of you ElJay!
Was literally just looking into an easier, more convenient way to do this!! Thank you!!
This was literally the most helpful video I've ever seen. Legend. Thank You!
I have been trying to figure this out this track splitting thing for the longest time, lol. Thank you sooo much.
I had to pause at 8 minutes because I have so much to say, I'll forget if I don't comment immediately LOL
1. Already another banger video posted at the perfect time
2. Somehow I was completely unaware of Sonar's existence and is exactly what I have been looking for. The UI is a lot more pleasing to look at than others.
3. I like what you said about horizontal layouts
4. Your in-time examples were amazing yet discrete.
5. Also, congratulations on the family, man !!! You are great at problem solving and put much thought into the things you care about. You're gonna do great.
Alright now to finish watching haha!!
This video is so helpful I'm wanting to start streaming so finding this app will help so much! I also love your vids :)
I HAVE BEEN GOOGLING ALL OVER FOR THIS FOR LIKE A WEEK AND OF COURSE YOU DELIVER💗
dude this is so good...I'm only 60 seconds in but I can feel that you've "been through it all" with OBS lol.
I use a different method but yea...watching now...
This tutorial was really helpful for me as I wanted to record and stream at the same time while still having those separate audio tracks so I could make the gameplay or my friends louder or quieter, so as a thank you, here's a like and a comment!
BRO THANK YOU I WAS LOOKING FOREVER FOR A VID LIKE THIS YOU HELPED ME SO MUCH
Definitely gonna rewatch it once I get to set it up for myself, thanks a bunch!
Thank you for all the great info! I'm not great with this kind of stuff, so this might be a nonsense thing to say, but you mentioned there being lag when trying to monitor your mic by adding it to the personal mix. I noticed that there's a button underneath the Master sliders, next to the mute button for the stream slider. It looks like an ear, and when you hover over it, it says, "Listen to what your audience hears". I clicked that and was able to hear myself, and there wasn't any lag. (To be exact, there was maybe a split second difference between me saying something and me hearing it, but I only noticed when specifically listening for it.) I don't know if that's the same function you're referring to when talking about monitoring lag, or if that's something that's helpful. It was helpful for me while not streaming to be able to make some adjustments; I had Spotify and this video playing, and used those in place of game audio to fiddle with the mic settings. Hopefully it helps someone else, too! (If I'm totally off-base, please disregard. Like I said, I'm trash when it comes to audio tech/mixing/etc.)
Here's a link to a screenshot of the button, in case that helps too: photos.app.goo.gl/Rh4c9yiT9nxgehof6
OMG this video is soooo fantastic!!!! Thank you so much, this is everything I ever needed
So glad!
yes! vertical sliders, you're absolutely right.
Audio settings not meshing is the stuff of nightmares. Thank you for this!!
thank you so much i was about to look for this and i see you uploading video about this
I have been fighting battles for my blue yeti mic to sound good without all the background noise but not sounding muffled... this.. THIS sis what I needed as well as the different controls 😭
This is my most anticipated video. Can't wait to stream again
This was amazing help!!
This was VERY helpful!
I wanted to set up audio without complicating it but this tutorial is explained so through that I feel comfortable giving it a go, thanks :)
Update: tried it today, didn’t like how it operated, the levels in OBS recordings are so low for some reason, probably uninstalling tmw
@@SupremeLos yeah same, doesn't seem to be working and just a headache
thanks for the awesome insight. how do you feel about just using steelseries software for everything even recording? cuz i dont have a beefy cpu and cant run all this on my pc. wondering what your thoughts are on the recording aspect of SS software.
hi thanks for the video, i haved been using voicemeter but trying the sonar instead. When you use overlay from own3d which track do you usually set for the overlays?
I've had access to Sonar for awhile as I own one of their headsets, but haven't ever used it or turned it on. They really should use your video as a "how to" and "why would you use this" official video. Now I understand how useful and important this software could be! Thank you!
I mean they also have a how to using the streamer mode on they officially chanel and on there website.
@@footballtalk4857True but honestly until this video I never took more than a 20 second peak at it and turned it off. I didn't see a need for it in my setup. This provided that "ah hah!" moment.
@@Sepherisal hmm I mean I enjoy both to each them on
life saver thanks so much for the video
so glad i have a mixing and engineering background and i can use that experience in streaming, one less hat i have to learn to wear lmao. thank you for recommending this software! big help!
I realized other night I need 'turn" down my friends on my videos when we in game spent hour looking for help and found this Thanks again
Really helpfull bro! Thanks!
THIS IS SICK!
Thankyou for this! This is so much better then what I was doing.
Quick question, for other audio sources such as alert box, sound alerts, mixitup etc, how would we go putting those into obs as seperate audio tracks?
I would also like to know how to do this.
what editor did you use or have you got a video on good editing software with obs. thanks
Thank you soooo much!!!
cool i got it set up tbh its a way better config than when i just used obs. thank you eljay😎
Great video, I am surprised that OBS does not have this option built into the software. I am going to set this up sometime this week. Thank you again for your time and for creating this video.
Its in beta for them :)
Awesome Video. Thanks for all the help with the stream setup tutorials. Just a Quick Question, Once I set up everything like you said I have 3 "OBS Studio" apps inside of Sonar. One in "game" with the headphone icon, the other in "Media" with the headphone icon, and the last one in "Chat" with the mic icon. Is this correct? or did i mess up something?
i actually legit have learned so much. i wish i watched this video when i started 4 years ago. never knew how important audio was until this video.... AND REMUXING IS A THING?! I legit have been converting my .mkv on out cloud convertor online.... christ.
Great Video! How does this work or can it work with ps5 and Discord?
Hi great videos I'm learning a lot from these videos I am just wondering is there a way to split the audio between transitions as well, so for a stream ending or "away" scene I can have it cut the game sound and play just background music, and then when I change the scene back it will transition back to game sound and cut music by itself?
Beautiful. How do you separate indivudual in-game game voice chat audio from game pew pew and game music audio?
This is excellent! Any way to set this up if someone has a dual PC setup for streaming?
This is a great way to do this on Windows. Still shocked MS doesn't have OS level features for this kind of stuff after so many years of need for features like this.
Great video, this was extremely helpful! I am having trouble with getting the audio separated on my editing software though as it still comes up as one audio. I am using streamlabs so idk if this feature is only on OBS
Idk which editing software you have but I use Wondershare filmora to separate the audio on that is-
Add the video to the project
Click the plus then click detach audio
Delete the video part
Right click the video
Go to audio track
Click on the second one (first one was the one you just detached from the video already)
And do that for each of them some will have sound some won’t.
Maybe your editing software can do something similar.
Now I’m not 100% positive that steelseries is what helps separate the audio for recordings but it might, so keep it especially for streaming.
@@SleepyT18 you are a legend, I use wondershare filmora too. I will give it a try tomorrow! Again, thanks for the help🤍
This is a much needed video. Also, do you have a video on how to separate overlays so we can stream and remove overlays and alerts, but still be able to record and not have those
Streamlabs does that natively, but OBS it’s more difficult, the plugins for it don’t actually work great so instead I recommend just making overlays more minimal, odds are if it’s too much for an edit, it’s likely a bit over the top for a stream.
And if your alerts are smaller, but their audio is on their own track, you can delete the audio and let the alert be less invasive
@@StreamScheme I’m using obs. I could switch back to streamlabs though. I’m just wondering so if I stream and I’m recording and I want to use the footage to make a guide on a game that I’m playing is it better to do a voiceover but how would I hide my camera? Or is it better to just make the guide while I’m live with my viewers that way I don’t need to remove the camera overlay.
El Jay, great video & walk through. Noob question: when adding Discord audio, would I drag & assign it to Chat in Sonar or add a seperate Audio source in OBS? If I assigned it to Chat, then I would have to add an extra track in OBS so I could separate the audio when mixing if needed. Any thoughts from you or chat would be greatly appreciated.
@streamscheme Are you able to remove spotify audio from vods using sonar?
I feel like this might have been asked but what editing software do you use to achieve this after you have remuxed?
Elgato Wave link vs Casterlabs Caffeinated vs Steelseries Sonar? Which one do you recommend more?
this is amazing, i have been trying to figure out how to do this for a while now lol, tytytytytytytyty, also the link here for stream packages can they be used with OBS Studio like Slobs?
Both
Hi, thanks for the video! Any idea why the different mixes dont show up in the obs audio settings? I only have streammix and microphone shown in obs. Its doesnt show Gaming/Media/Chat as Sources in Windows mixer. It shows them as a playback device
Thank you so much this helped a lot. but i have a problem, after streaming my saved VOD does not record my game sound or any background sound, only my mic sound is heard. how can I solve this? thank youuu
Maybe I missed something but I'm seeing two mics under audio mixer. My Hyper X and Mic/Aux 2. What should do I here? Thanks for putting this video together! It's been a big help.
I watched your other video for setting up filters in OBS but now that I added Sonar those filters don't seem to apply any more. Do I only control them through Sonar now?
Edited: Now testing my game sound with my mic when recording. I only hear my mic and no game music and I make some changes to hear both but the game music is way to loud and when I turn it down my voice is low.
I’m using an Elgato Wave 3 and Wave Link with SLOBS do the same things apply in this case
really cool system. how would i get this to work with my game pc? (mic etc attached to stream pc)
Hey Eljay I have a question, what if you are running your game through a capture card for Xbox series X? Is there a specific way of setting Sonar for that?
thanks for the video.. question though, when i remux the file to mp4 i dont get the microphone recording any idea what that can be?
I am new into streaming and clipping. So when I do a stream I download the VOD from twitch. I have a 3060ti and Ryzen 5600X. Should I record using the recording tool from OBS at the same time I stream?
Not me being a DJ and being used to vertical audio settings and having NO idea about the vertical option in OBS... thank you for this video for this and this specifically... the other things too but... god. I am no longer a psychopath thanks to Eljay.
Hii, just wanted to ask a question, does this work for seperating stream alerts audio as well? I've been trying for the past couple of hours through other solutions I just wanted to make sure :')
i love this solution and really appreciate the guides on this channel. my only issue is i was really hoping to control the individiual audio sources (my mix and stream mix) with my midi controller. i can use it to control audio sources in OBS but for some reason Sonar does not play well with midimixer. is there another app like this that does work with midimixer? or is there some way to connect sonar to my midi controller i'm missing? just trying to get back to controlling audio without alt tabbing. and obs audio capture almost never works for me so unfortunately that isn't an option.
In the Advanced Audio Properties, would the Twitch VOD track (for example #6) need to be checked to gaming and microphone only or would it only go to Stream mix only or would it go to all three?
If you hadn't found the answer I believe you set "Media" to the audio track and the VOD track should be set on your "Stream Mix" if using the guide step by step here.
Quick question, though. For SFX like Channel Point redeems that are just media sources in OBS that get turned on and off, how would you route that?
Yeah I was wondering that myself as I watched this. I would guess it all go through channel 1 though as that is the everything channel.
If I have the voicemod program as well that I use, would I set that virtual mic as the SteelSeries mic input? Can I use these two programs together?
Yes so in mic select the voicmod virtual device and it should work
Hi, ElJay. Thanks for sharing info about this program! I was trying to use Voicemeeter before and as a newbie non-audio tech who just casually streams, it was just too much!
Question: If I am playing a multiplayer game that uses TeamSpeak, for example, I am guessing I would route TeamSpeak Audio to the Sonar "Chat," then add another audio device in OBS. Currently in OBS Audio Settings, under global devices, under Mic/Aux Audio 3, I click on the drop down menu and don't see SteelSeries Sonar - Chat as an option (but I assume that's because I haven't routed TeamSpeak to Sonar yet). Is this the correct method?
Also whenever I try to add Discord, Discord audio is choppy. :( I changed the in-app input/output settings in Discord also and have the same issue.
LIFE SAVER
Thanks for the video mate. Is it maybe possible to create an audio track for each Discord friend? Then I could with that, disable that friends audio-track if he/she are one day not in the mood for being recorded.
Not for each discord friend but for discord individually yes.
If they don’t want to be recorded, then don’t record or they leave.
I'm overwhelmed with too many options and not enough knowledge. I've been researching for months and gotten nowhere but confused.
I want to do a static long-running minimally-attended-by-me livestream (similar to 3d print streams). I want to stream the visual and supply the audio (music) and not background noise, or very narrowly-controlled mic capture of the sounds.
What would an absolute beginner noob need to achieve this for tiktok/twitch and still be able to monitor/interact with chat?
I am not a mac user, would have to be Windows. Any advice?
I might have to give this a go, I tried Rode unify after I brought one of their microphones and was looking for something better. Unify would randomly crash my PC and it would never save my slider settings.
I love your videos. Not only are they entertaining due to your sympathetic nature, but they are also extremely informative and helpful. Thank you for that! #Own3dGiveaway
#Own3dGiveway and I'm sure I'm late for that. But I'd pick an overlay. I just wanted to say how much I've relied on your videos to slowly find errors on my setup and come to your channel to find a fix almost immediately. Keep up the good work!
In OBS Output Streaming, right under "Audio Track" I have "Twitch VOD Track" with 1-6 being selectable similar to "Audio Track", should I have that enabled and if so which track? Didn't see that in your settings. Great vid and explanation, thanks!
depens on what you want to keep in the twitch VOD, if you want the same as you are streaming, then track 1, but if for example you have music with copyright in the background during the streaming but you don't want that music in the twitch VOD (you could get banned), then select only the tracks with your game and microphone.
I've been streaming for few months now. In my case I went with a hardware solution. This allows for live monitoring with no delay. Partially this is due to experience with sound engineering and music production.
All my audio is mixed for stream output via a Soundcraft signature 12MTK. What I am struggling with is multitrack OBS recording. I've set it up on individual tracks as outlined in the video . The problem is when I drag it into my editing software, it only displays the main mix that went out to stream. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Great video thank you. I ran into a problem with the very first setting you show roughly around time 3:08, where you show to add Sonar Stream to mic/aux audio 1. This is the problem I am having. I set this up like you show but no audio is picked up and what audio does get through is clipped. How do I fix this? I found I had to set the sonar stream to Desktop 1 to recieve audio in the OBS mixer. What am I doing wrong?
having same problem, let me know if u fixed it.
Better than Voicemeeter? can it do vst plugins?
serious question ....on the streaming side i can do most of this with my stream deck and wave link correct.
Yes but this is free :)
@StreamScheme I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong..I already bought the stuff before I found this video.. but you did help me set up recording different tracks dude ... really good videos
Can you please do a breakdown video for creating shorts? I stream on youtube and want to create shorts from my live stream post stream. But I dont know what im doing, hahah. Appreciate the help.
Already done :)
Thanks
Does this work when sending to stream PC with cap card
This is a pain in the back. I set it up exactly how you described and since then all my videos are constatly muted. I have gone in and tried to change things but honestly at this point I have no clue what I am doing. I just wanted my mic on a channel, game on a channel and thats about it. I dont do anything else with it so confused whe I can not get it to work. It also seems every time I switch to a different layout then I have to redo everything.
now to figure out how to apply this to a dual rig setup
Is there a way to get another Desktop Audio device? As i would like to select: Gaming, Chat and Media. Not just two of them as it is currently
Found a work around. Don't do the output section leave them all as disabled and instead utilise a source called "Audio Output Capture" for each of the individual captures. Hope this helps anyone with my problem!
So is this for recording videos or streaming because I did all this how he did and I had stream mix working and all the other ones at same time I thought it all just went through the stream mix
Both, the Stream mix is for the stream, the other tracks we setup up for recordings.
Is there something similar that can be used on Macs iOS?
When I finished recording and put it into the editor, the six audio things did not pop up. I’m not super certain what I did incorrect, and in the recorded video my Spotify music is extremely loud, even though it is at like level four out of 100
is thier anything i should add if i want to stream but not have my own voice/mic record sounds dumb but I not ready to use my voice yet
So I’m still getting use to streaming and I’m only streaming bc I haven’t even dived into recording for other stuff. Do I only need to use the one bar or do I still need all separate bars in audio in obs? I hope that question makes sense.
Would this work with go xlr? Since the xlr has its own dedicated channels would I just add the channels In the way you did as well?
The whole point of a GoXLR is to do this, you don’t need to use both, and shouldn’t it would be silly.
But also the BridgeCast is better than the GoXLR these days and I’ve done videos on it if you’re curious.
Will this give me audio on both pcs “thru” a capture card and back to my headset?????
Hey i was trying to use this for streaming but i dont have any sound at all now in my stream is there a fix for that ?
Does this work if you have a capture card like elgato?
I use voicemeter for this exact samething, but the set up in OBS is way more complicated... I might look to move over to this...
I've been trying to use voice meeter too but wanted something more user friendly with streamlabs so tempted to switch :)
How do I add discord to the list of separated tracks. I can only have 2 desktop tracks . but the "sonar chat" isn't an option for the other aux channels.
I have Sonar since I got my Steelseries headset (love it btw). But I'm not sure I it can help me since my game audio and game chat are coming into OBS via my Elgato HD 60S+. I do have my mic to the stream separate so I can control that (though not in my stream recording...I should be able to do that in OBS and I haven't yet because I'm busy and lazy when I'm not busy lol). I do run into audio issues where I;m told my game chat isn't loud enough or the game is too loud vs game chat, but because I'm not a PC streamer I don't know if Sonar can work with that. Maybe I'm off base?
Will this cause any desync issues with the audio in OBS? With application audio capture beta, I've had my game audio slowly get desync'd as time went on until I would reset it agian. Looking for a solution that stops any issue like this from happening, so I can have a more seamless stream!
Is there a specific editing software you use? In mine, it doesn't separate the audio into different sections when I put my video into the editing software.
Any decent one will do, Davinci resolve is free, if yours isn’t doing this, then yeah swap
@@StreamScheme Da Vanci isn't compatible with my GPU. Any other suggestions?
Does this works for sound alerts too?
I have watched your video and several others and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm using OBS with Sonar, followed your instructions and when I go back to watch my video on twitch, the only audio is my microphone. and the stream audience is not hearing anything either. maybe there's a button I forgot to click? everything shows up in Sonar and my audio mixer appears to be receiving sound in OBS but nothing is making it to the stream or the reduxed videos in twitch after stream. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate the help! I've started over and followed your video 3 x now. lol
would this work with an elagto capture card on a console?
