OBS For Brand New Streamers (Creating Scenes, Adding Alerts, and MORE)

- Installing OBS can be confusing, and streaming isn’t meant to be confusing, it is meant to be fun, right?
Today you’ll go from having nothing setup to having an awesome overlay set up, and knowing how to create scenes, add alerts, widgets, and more in under 20 minutes!

How To Add Sources To OBS:
On the left we have Scenes, as I said, you'll make scenes for different purposes, for example, you'll make a game scene, so we right-click, rename the Game scene. Now I might be setting up a gaming scene, but I’ll cover everything you need to know to build any scene you want.
In the middle we have Sources, sources are all of your media that are in the Scene you have selected. Right now it is empty, but if we click this plus sign we can add sources such as a game capture, which you'll need in your Gaming Scene, this lets you capture your game and display it in OBS.
Anything you want to add, you'll do it with this plus sign, that could be video graphics, or it could be still images, or it could be any of these dozens of widgets you’ll add with browser sources.
Lets start with the webcam, lets click the plus, click add Video Capture Device, we will select our webcam, and then resize it down by clicking the corner, and dragging.
Now the Source List isn't a random order, it is actually layered, imagine the bottom layer is behind everything else, so if I drag my webcam below the game capture, it is hidden, if you can’t see a source, its worth confirming its at the right place of the list.
Now I want to add my support bars that the name of my latest follower will appear in, so I will click the + and I can either click Image if my support bar graphic isn't animated, aka its a still image, or I can click Media source if it is an animation or video.

How To Install Twitch Alerts Into OBS
To install an alerts into OBS, you will need to complete the following:
Step 1: From within OBS, you will need to click the + button and add a browser source.
Step 2: Login to Twitch, and go to the Twitch dashboard, and then select alerts.
Step 3: Make a new alert box, and copy the browser source of the alerts in the bottom right.
Step 4: Paste the browser source url into OBS, and then sent a Test alert from the Alerts dashboard to confirm it's working.
How to setup Stinger Transitions in OBS
Let’s add some polish to our transitions between scenes. So let’s quickly add an animation to this transition.
So head to the Scene Transition section, click the + button, change it to Stinger, and now you’ll want to find the stinger, remember every graphic in todays video is downloadable in the Stream scheme discord, import your video file, you need to use a webm video stinger, select frame, transition point 30 is what fits the animation I am using, but you can adjust when the transition point, moving it further and back until it fits yours, hit done.
Now select the new stinger as your default with this circle, hit done, and now click between your two scenes.
Ta-dah, you’ve got a transition!

I personally follow your idea that “all the overlays may take away from the video experience” which is why My favorite thing to do is to create scenes with the weirdest backgrounds for streams, it’s crazy the amount of assets you can pull in and that vertical plug in from master Senpai is a must to save some time in Davinci editing your shorts. Im personally still very new to the idea of editing let alone editing down streams so maybe we could get a “how to understand editing” from a certain somebody? Thanks for all the help again mr scheme.

Here's a question that I haven't seen be answered, not at least on my search, and maybe you can make a video out of:
How should you set up OBS if you have different games you want to stream? And I don't mean simultaneously having different games on, just playing game A for a few hours, then game B.
Is it better to have one scene collection with all the different scenes for the games? Or is it better to have a different scene collection for each game? 'Cause frankly, I'm doing the former, and my stream alerts source isn't working at times, but I've made a new scene collection just solely for testing the alert box, and it works everytime.

I've been using OBS just to display my Switch game on screen and was streaming via Twitch Studio, but it really slowed down my PC. Fortunately, your explanation on how to set this up seems like a significant improvement. Thanks for this video!
Good video. Still don't understand alerts though. How can I click save when there's nowhere to click? Is it just locked because I haven't streamed yet? That seems unintuitive. Maybe the video on the alerts themselves will help more

Hi stream scheme😁.I've been watching you videos for a while and seeking advice on getting into content creation and streaming. I'm considering purchasing a PC but I'm unsure if it's worth the investment. My main goal is not to make money, but rather to create something amazing and interact with people. Currently, I'm limited to making content on a console and believe that getting a PC would serve as an upgrade. Should I go ahead and purchase a PC for content creation? Do you think it will be beneficial in the long run if I invest time and have a passion for it? It would be appreciated if you replied 🙂.
So here's something I've ran into since starting to use OBS. When trying to crop a source, Ill hold alt over the square of the edge I want to crop, but the edge doesnt turn to the dotted green like like you see in your video. If I try to move it, the edge of the source stays right where its at, but the contents start to slide toward the edge that Im trying to crop. The even stranger thing about it is that if you move the mouse far enough, the source starts to disappear. Anyone know what is going on there?
Hilarious I thought I deleted all my sources and audio mixers when i was drunk last night and so I started watching this to figure out how to set it all up again. When you told me to go to scene collection I saw something called untitled and I clicked on it. Everything showed up again and nothing was deleted lmao.
So, 9:24 you said it would probably do the normal chat, but there’s just a big black box. No text of any color, I’ve even changed the colors and still nothing. What am I doing wrong?

the audio part confused me. My first stream I just did was set up correctly from this video besides the audio. I had a echo from the mic through the speakers. How do I fix that?

This is pretty good tutorial wise. I am still lost though. Not your fault. It's me. I have a hard time understanding this stuff despite my best efforts. Which is funny considering I am great at understanding IT bits. Going to have to watch these tutorials over and over until I get it.
Is there a reason not to put the chat, alert boxes (as in new follower, subscriber, etc.) in the same overlay? Seems to make sense to me, but I might be missing something ofc ^^'
I'm also asking from the perspective of premaking an entire overlay and putting that into OBS, and putting the effects on top of it in Streamlabs
Because then you'll be making it so it really only works on one scene, I prefer individual boxes so I can copy and paste them to each scene, and move them around.
Would rather setup 4 Browser sources that can go anywhere?
Or 6 full overlays, one for each of the scenes you use.
And then you play a new game, and need to just move the alerts off the map, but bugger its all one overlay, so it can't be moved by itself.
Its just more flexibile :)

(For what it's worth, I definitely see where you're coming from, it's less work to copy/paste it and then be able to just use it on repeat rather than starting from scratch every time, I just unfortunately have them all on the same graphic :'D )
for some reason my game capture is messed up and i cant see it on my screen, is there a way to reset it to default?

Clicking "Create Alert Box" for me just returns an error. Do you have to be an affiliate for alerts or something?
I have a ps4 and can not hear any game play audio on obs.. i have astro 20s that plug into my playstation they are wireless ive looked for hours to try to get answers does anyone know how to fix this issue i have a j5 create jva14 as a capture card.

For some reason when i try to upload the support bar to StreamElements it doesnt show up. I was able to upload it straight from OBS tho.

hey man i need some help, i used stream elemnts like for everything and it works wonderfully one thing. I set up my bot in stream labs yet say i use !game or any command it just well doesn't work in the chat box. It just comes up at !game how can i fix that other then that ur videos have been such a help.

Can you show how to setup the streamelements activity feed as a dock in OBS?
I do that in this video for Twitch Activity dock which is a better tool, just keep watching and don't skip around. :)
The StreamElements one requires a plugin, which can break OBS.

It’s a custom font, it’s never been on elements, I mention we give it to you in the overlay download

I feel like this video is very comprehensive. But as someone who is trying to get started you lost me after the alerts. I copied the browser url and created the alert browser source and couldn't get it to send a test. Been struggling for almost 2 hours. To get it working like you have it here. Idk... my singular braincell too tired now. I will revisit. armed with more knowledge and understanding than today.
As I said, I did a full video on alerts for the breakdown, and wasn’t covering them intensely here
