I'm a custodian at a supermarket. I take pride in my work. With this virus going around I have one day off every 15 days because I have to. I not only clean and polish everything, but I joke around to put the customers at ease, bring in a small gift for my bosees and the other Janitors, and every christmas I decorate the trash bin and fill it with presents for all the employees and all the kids! You don't have this job to make money, you do it to make a difference! Thank you!

This video is so true. Thanks for putting this out there. I am a former State Correctional Officer and now a custodian for the past 10 years. I hated telling people I was now a custodian, but after thinking about all the positives of the job, I don't have a problem. The school district I work at is amazing!!! We have the best insurance benefits I've ever had!!! We pay nothing for our insurance and the insurance covers 100%. Working in the prison the insurance covered 80% while you pay the remaining 20% plus pay over $1000 a month to have insurance. Not the case now....free insurance and it covers 100%. Having every weekend and holiday off is also a great plus...something you don't get when working in a prison. To top it all off, I've been selected as school employee of the year this year!!! Something that would have never happed in the prison system. So for all you custodians out there, keep your head up, know you're providing an essential service and keep up the great work....it doesn't go unnoticed!!!

this is a great video, thank you so much for sharing your experience and wisdom with us. this was helpful for me because i am considering applying to jobs for a school custodian, where i live the pay is really good. the pay is more than what some teachers make! i love cleaning and i love physical labor, im passionate about providing a clean and safe environment for the public.
Growing up, school in the 1980s, the janitor was there and always a good guy, I know his job was tough, especially now. After leaving my professional job from injury, I started helping my wife as a custodian, we are both new. We work together, part time, and in the late afternoon for about 3 to 5 hours, we can finish within that time. We are both mid 50s so we do not want long and hard work days, don't want to deal with the public, it has really turned into a great thing. The pay is quite low compared to my past work, very low for the job, I believe. But one needs to find the right building and company, and you will have a great job and career! It's not easy and there is a lot to learn but you will always have a job.
A nice video. I was a substitute custodian first for 6 months then became a full-time school custodian with good benefits in the southeastern state of Maryland. I’ve been doing it for over 8 years. I’ll be changing jobs soon but I can transfer my 8 + plus custodial time towards my government pension time in my next government job. The job can be tough at times physically, mentally, financially and socially but the work schedule, job security stability and benefits are good. I also do security officer work too as I actually have two jobs. I’m still young and healthy so I can handle it. I got a Master’s degree (in IT engineering) with three degrees total. I plan to leave the job later this year for a job that’s much more reflective of my education and overall skillset. My custodial job has helped me realize to respect custodians and what they do. I know many people look down on me when I tell them what I do for a living, especially women. It’s a job I respect but not a job I’ll miss when I leave it. 👌🏻
@@mrjeffthecustodian Which state do you do custodial work in Jeff? Ever think about doing something else that’s easier, demands respect and pays a lot more? 👌🏻
I live in Bama. I love my job. I don’t care if folks pat me on the back or not. I am a blessed man. I’m home every night with my family. Pay ok I have never missed a meal. My house will be paid for in 17 months. So I’m good.
@@mrjeffthecustodian I haven’t been to Alabama in a while. I was in Cherokee, Bama once. Do custodians make good money down in Bama? After about 19 years in, I would think they pay at least $25 an hour.
Each person in a school building, in their own way, is an EDUCATOR. That includes Custodian/Janitors. If you work in a school building, in any capacity, your conduct, interactions, shape the future. If I were in Jeff's capacity, I would occasionally share what I do with the pupils. If one wandered into my office or closet space, I'd greet them and show them a little of my work world. Just watching the few Mr. Jeff videos that I have, has shaped the way I perform related tasks at the store I work in.
PREACH BROTHER. I had a job as a night time custodian at a church which I got from someone I knew. I usually cover about 20,000 sq feet once a week. It takes me a good 4 hours to cover the basics and then some detailing. After all the work and sweat, I'll still get complaints that nitpick some small thing that is out of my rotation for the week. The unappreciative sentiment is too real. They cut my job because they were going to change to a volunteer work by the church members. That lasted a couple years until everyone was sick of it and got a dose of empathy. I now have the job again.
Damn touched me!!! I am sure that a lot of young, older people that are currently working as a Custodian will and can RELATE to this. man this was a great Vid, Is coming form the heart :-) I like it a lot !!! You really explained it very well & in detailed !!! I am in Northern NJ, I work for a Special Needs Middle/High School. I was first a Teacher Assistant, Then I got hurt where I tore my lateral Meniscus on the left Knee, The insurance was great... BUT as a TA, I was NOT able to cover my wife or future Children if I needed to. I honesty did not know that the pay... as a Custodian is better than when I was a TA.. That was a really nice/ cool surprise. So yea Great job on this video man? I am 32 Year young.. In March I made 1 YEAR as a Custodian but 3 with the County. I am looking forward to many more years as a Custodian while I try to go to school during the Morning :-) I enjoy working what I do.
i live in NJ. ive been very fortunate but life has been hard. My friend works at a very wealthy town high school pay is pretty good. Actually, its incredible. for 2 years ive been trying to get a job there. Well im happy to say July 1st 2024 i start as a full time custodian 2 years and 4 different interviews later an i finally got the job. Im so grateful. last year i made 39k before taxes thjats with a butt load of overtime. im starting at 55k and ill be apart of NJEA. IM FUCKING SET!
One of the most silliest things that you will see as School Custodian that some Schools will have more than necessary amount of cans outside. - I can understand why they add lots of cans due to some Slacker Custodians in the past that didn't their job correctly i.e. emptying the cans almost daily.
It is a thankless job but ur hundred percent correct its job security. I do it for the work I take pride in my work I'm not in it to get acknowledgment from faculity. It makes ur day better when they do speak to you but it's ok when they don't. It would b nice to feel like we were part of their staff or team rather than separate or under eath them. We're all human trying to survive in this world. A job is a job, at least ur making money when so many just want a free hand out. I was cleaning houses b4 cleaning schools so I can say I prefer schools to houses any day. You just know what your walking into at the schools every day is about the same. I rather like the routine of it. I hope I can still be doing this type of work in my retirement years because I'm worried I won't get to "retire"
I just started Custodian work last week and it's definitely a change from my previous department. The biggest struggle I'm having is finding the right shoes to keep my whole body from breaking. Any suggestions??
Been doin this for 7 years now and I absolutely can’t stand being a custodian. I liked it for the first 3 years after that it’s been a pain in the rear. Pay is pretty stagnant. You don’t move up, at least at my school district you don’t. The benefits are great which helps for retirement. The pay is really good but the job is very unsatisfactory. I work at an elementary school. Yeah it’s an easy enough job. But I wouldn’t call this a very good career. Maybe if there was some chances to move up and challenge ourselves. But in my district you stay stagnant. Most of my custodial counterparts have been here 10 to 30 years now and even they say they hate this job, but they felt like that had to do it. I won’t lie this job makes me feel like this is as good as life gets.
If I where you. I would go find something you enjoy. A job is more than benefits and a pay check. You need to enjoy what you do. If not it will make you bitter.
I’ve been a public school custodian for seven years, and have loved every single year of it!! I work the evening shift 2p to 10p. It’s just annoying that when school is over a lot of teachers hang around and stay in their rooms and do stuff on their computers or chitchat with other teachers. I hate having to work around them, especially after school. So my question to you is, would you just go onto the next room or would you go into the classroom and do your thing and vacuum the carpet while teachers are still in their rooms?
I always went right on in. You got a job to do and you have a time limit. If it’s your time to be in there room be there. If they say skip me move on and don’t go back until it’s there time again. Got to have your boundaries. I don’t stress over it. You have a job to do just like they do.
@@mrjeffthecustodian thank you so much for the feedback!! You have just gotten yourself a new subscriber! I look forward to all of your videos and picking your brain about things
I remember my first few months on the job...had kids ask who I was and one said just another uneducated worker that will be gone by next school year....I had previously had worked in the maintenance Dept at a casino and my youngest had health issues so I went and got my cdl and figured to drive a bus till I figured what I wanted to do...but ended up being custodian/bus driver..so I'm still there too lol at the job I got a year ago
I'm the opposite: I was born physically compromised and weak, and for fifteen years since college I worked mostly sedentary office jobs, stuff I was good at. Problem was, I was a chronic job hopper, and now, at 51, my record is trashed, and my only option are more physical jobs, mainly in retail. I get teased a lot because I use a wooden dolly or a hand truck to move pieces of furniture that most of my co-workers, even one female, can lift on their own. But I've been where I am, through none other the the protection and grace of God, for seven years - the longest period in my life at one job. My lesson: If you have a job that you both love and are good at, STICK TO IT, no matter what kind of jerk supervisors you one day have to work under, no matter what's happening in your personal life.
@@mrjeffthecustodian well your blessed because I worked 10yrs in the school district in Florida doing the same career as you and I had bad luck the district janitorial manager was a lady and she was asking me how to take apart and use the nobles speed scrubber it's like an army general asking a private first class how to use a gun😄 she most likely was an outside hiring
We do lite maintenance. We use to do a lot more. Our schools are so big we really don’t have the time. We have a full time maintenance person at each school. Back in the day we had to fix a whole lot.
I carry a small tool pouch with me at my present job, with basic tools for light repairs - in second hand retail you get lots of wobbly chairs, or frayed speaker wire on used electronics, plus a tape measure because someone is always asking me to measure something if it'll fit their car, etc. It saves me having to walk from wherever I am in our store to the custodial closet, to rummage through a tool tray whose contents vary by the day(!) One day they'll have three standard screwdrivers when I need a Philips, or vice-versa! My pouch makes a little clunky noise when I walk, because it's lightly filled with just the tools I need, but management is used to it by now!
Do you ever get trolls who talk mess about you career on the internet and in person? I currently work a restaurant and I’m ready to move on to another career path in the custodial industry. I’ve always had respect for custodians growing up when I was a kid in school. Anyways I’m looking forward to hearing more from you. Hope all is well!
I’m a loner pretty much. Rule number one about being a custodian if you want to keep loving your job. Keep your mouth shut and ears plugged. Don’t talk no trash don’t listen to no trash. Negative mess will cause you to dislike any job. So I eat lunch and take breaks alone. Custodian job is the best job I have ever had. I set my pace and just stay busy and it’s all good.
Let me tell you something the custodian jobs in my city pay better, have more paid vacations, and have better benefits than teachers. So remember you have more job security than teachers.
Oh wow!! I have only had summer works at that age. I use to get out the f class in high school and help with lunch room and clean stadium after football games. No pay just was getting out of class.

@@nathanielhayslett6389 thank you for the info! First time being a custodian at a school ! I was a Dennys dishwasher so I’ve been around some nasty stuff and smelt some gnarly things! I’m sure i could do it !
@@danktrain2467 definitely, none of it is extremely difficult. And generally, i love the hours due to me being in college. I know when I’m going to work and get weekends and holidays which I can’t ask for much better as a student raising a daughter and supporting me and my wife
this is a great video, thank you so much for sharing your experience and wisdom with us. this was helpful for me because i am considering applying to jobs for a school custodian, where i live the pay is really good. the pay is more than what some teachers make! i love cleaning and i love physical labor, im passionate about providing a clean and safe environment for the public.
Go for it!
@@mrjeffthecustodian thank you, I just applied, I hope I get an interview
This is so true. Don't forget we know all the secrets. Never had a day off through the pandemic. Worked more. Love my kids and teachers.
I’m in my mid 50 as well been a custodian for 23 years.
Good words. Good luck on your new job. You sound you have worked a plan and your in a position now to reap the benefits of your hard work.
In didn’t make that great in school system. I make pretty good at collage.
Here in Minneapolis, Minnesota...the custodians make more than the teachers. Close to twice as much
Seriously!
in wyomings school districts they get 14+ an hour starting
Wow! That would be awesome!
I love and respect you sir! I wish you were my boss. Respect!
I am “underemployed” as a college grad, but I have social anxiety and Ocd-it works for me.
We are really in customer relations. We are there to service the people in our building. It’s surly not about us. As a person.
@@mrjeffthecustodian Still, our interactions, and how we interact, can have an impact on the up 'n coming.
I hope you got a pay raise.
I am looking forward to many more years as a Custodian while I try to go to school during the Morning :-)
I enjoy working what I do.
Thanks

Im 28 & Omw to a school custodial interview now
Knock it out of the park!
No body notices our job until we miss a spot!!
Told that right!
Thanks for the video. Very honest
One of the most silliest things that you will see as School Custodian that some Schools will have more than necessary amount of cans outside.
- I can understand why they add lots of cans due to some Slacker Custodians in the past that didn't their job correctly i.e. emptying the cans almost daily.
Custodians are the oil in the machine. Without the oil the machine can't function and move forward and break down.
What is best to wash mop heads and dust mop heads with? Laundry soap, vinegar? I brought my first load home tonight 😆
Yes laundry soap with vinegar
@@mrjeffthecustodian ok thanks so very much! Have a blessed weekend 🙏
Hang in there!
I can’t wait to do it sometime down the road

I had rather work a physical job. Than be educated and working behind a desk.
Yeah I like the job alot...always something to do and expect the unexpected...
Well said
How much better or worse is your pay as a custodian then your pay as a substitute?
Sub from where I left from made almost as much as I did. Years ago sub pay was horrible.
That's my fav line it's job security
Yes use it all the time.
I want to become one in My area Peoria Illinois in the district I’m one at HYVEE
your smart marrying a school district woman you probably have good dance moves
lol we where married before we ever went to work in the schools.
Because patient care was killing my entire soul…and my back. Been in the cleaning business off and on for over 20 years.
I want to have my own cleaning business after I retire. Kinda any ways.
Well said Brother Jeff 👍
do you work weekends? do you work in the summer time?
No weekends. I work year around.
During your time as a custodian, have you ever used a carpet cleaner that was built like a floor scrubber?
No. Do they make one?
Yes they do actually! A Tennant 1610 is an example of one.
Do you only do cleaning work or do you do maintenance/fixing things too?
Save those foot steps. Have with you what you need. Very wise!
do you have set hours? or are they all over the place?
How does one apply to be a school custodian? Also, do you get to be off when the school is closed for holidays? 🤔
Apply at local board of education. Holidays off are different from system to system.
Generally no you don't get off when school is out. There are federal holidays off, but def not summer, spring break, or Christmas
I am off now. Week two of 3. I built up vacation days over the years. I have never took this much vacation at once. Boy is it awesome!!
I want to be a custodian so I can finally sleep with a teacher! lol jk
My wife is a teacher .
