The thank you's are nice, from staff and students, administrators, especially from co-workers. The random gifts in the mailbox are from a genuine gratefulness of tasks performed. However I get the most satisfaction when I can wow the highly educated colleagues by solving their complex dilemma (touch screen tv won't work) by applying the most basic troubleshooting techniques (plugging the unit into the outlet).
Ive been a custodian since June and I'm 59 years old . I was a route Delivery driver for almost 30 years and wasn't appreciated at all .I've got more appreciation from the school I worked for in a few short months than I have in the 28 years at my old job. However, I do a good job for me , I approach this job the same way I approached every job and that's to put my best effort forward. One thing I didn't expect In this field is how much I really enjoy it. I enjoy making the school a better environment for learning, I put alot of pride into my work. I love your videos Mr Jeff , keep up the good work , merry Christmas.
I've been doing this almost 5 years. I left the job last year because of everything you just said but returned because I actually missed it. Thankfully they let me return but I now realize exactly what you are saying and you're 100% correct.....Your videos really have made a difference in my attitude and my wanting to continue with this career. Thanks Mr Jeff 👍
Very good advice. Most jobs don’t give a flip and don’t care about you. You’re just there to do a job. I watched a custodian after 34 years of work retire his last day his supervisor did not say anything to him other than hang your keys up in the custodial closet. That was it nothing else. Not even a wish you a great retirement nothing. It is extremely sad to watch people treat people like that, but it’s life and it goes on. But when you have a teacher or a admin staff retire out it’s like a party for a day for one person with rocking chairs as gifts and a big hoopla. I’ve seen this happen over and over. Being a custodian there is never hardly any recognition, but I blame that all on your maintenance supervisor. He is the person that sets example for a great place to work or one that is just a warm body and that’s all he needs in that spot.
Yes true in some places for sure. I worked in a place for 19years. Moved to a different custodian job for a collage. They just let me walk. Just put your keys badge and phone on the desk before you leave. That was it. So definitely do it for benefits and provide for my family.
It can be difficult and easy to forget that cleaning is about expecting the unexpected, it’s a dynamic environment, you are involved in daily maintainer, people aren’t going to stand still. That said I have drawn the line where someone intentionally makes a spill (if I see it happen) although on that occassion it was at a hospital and a member of staff was spilling tea as they walking and called them out it on corridor because myself or cleaner will have to clean it up (that and risk of slip) Mess due to rushing around I get but was hen they have time and choose to be ignorant about surroundings does strike a nerve to me almost as if their saying ‘it’s ok, the cleaner will do it’ Do you have PayPal as a alternative to buy me a cofffe? As I can support via that.
I’m blessed to work at the school I work at. Teachers and students are very appreciative of the work I do. Last school year I received over four hundred dollars in gift cards. The students write notes of appreciation. If my day isn’t going so well a smile a hello from a student or any staff member brightens my day. I love my work.
One of your best and helpful videos. A lot of the job is mental also. The younger generation does not support you. Putting up chairs to help out or sweep their messes up for example. It only takes one person of the staff to start the "If they aren't doing it why should I". The schools are not training employees also. There are so many frustrating, unfair, condescending things I deal with every shift, it can make you feel overwhelmed and not appreciated. Especially when you work for a large district like LAUSD. The bureaucracy is unbelievable. What helps me to deal with feeling down about the job is to team up with the better workers who have similar values and work ethics. It helps with comradery and you have someone to bounce off and talk about things. They understand what you are going through. I also have to do feel good about the work and do it for my satisfaction. Thanks for the video Mr. Jeff and have a great Holiday.
The surrounding yourself with like minded people is key when possible. That’s why I started this channel because of the lack of training. My saying always is. Control the job don’t let the job control you. Have a Merry Christmas!
I've been a custodian for 23 years both nights and days in a Elementary building .I always tell the teachers when there is a mess it's job security for me
There’s a difference between a mess and an absolute disaster. There will always be a need for custodians. To me telling them that is like saying it’s ok for the kids go ape shit.
Amen brother

Absolutely

When I applied for the custodian job I was told it was a thankless job. I knew that but I still enjoy the work.
