I used to struggle understanding the modes but I eventually figured them out. You have explained them exactly as I would! As you say, they are constructed by starting with the major scale and moving the first interval to the end and repeating the procedure. Also by keeping the root note (C) the same you can hear the "sound" of the different modes. Another great video - thanks!

There are different ways to explain the modes but I settled on this one as I thought it was clearest.

I took notes. A chart helps when you make it yourself
Making a video for each one separately and teaching how to get modal sound of that mode, would be a good video idea.
The next few videos will take each mode in turn and then show you how to construct chords from that mode and provide some example progressions. I hope that will help!

Great video! I have learned the scales but never paid attention to thinking of them as their own scales. I learned them in C but it was C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phyrigian etc. so everything sounded like C Ionian. Could you do a video on making chord progressions for the modes? I think that would help a lot of people (me included!) put the modes in action.

That phrase: "When we move up to a note, we call it sharp. When we move down to a note, we call it flat," might be confusing for some.
Many novices think that means that when you go up a scale, sharps are used and when you go down a scale, flats are used.... I've heard many express that, over the years.
Usually, sharping and flatting (verbs) are what we do to a note and then that's the name of the resulting note change: Flattening the 5 to a Flat 5, for example. Or sharping the 4 to a Sharp 4. One wouldn't want to say: Sharp that 4th to a Flat 5th...
Also, proper use of sharps and flats keeps diatonic scales in alphabetical order: In E minor, it would be a nuisance if someone learned it as: E, Gb, G, A, B, C, D, E or learned F major as F, G, A, A#, C, D, E, F.
Sorry. Just pointing out a possible pitfall for beginners, play by ear players, and theory novices. Anyhow, great lesson! I love modes! Thanks.

I think the 1st Mode Lesson is easiest starting with the Diatonic/Relative Modes of C Major:
C Major (C Ionian):
C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
D Dorian:
D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D
E Phrygian:
E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E
F Lydian:
F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F
G Mixolydian:
G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G
A Natural Minor (A Aeolean):
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A
B Locrian:
B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B
And it's as easy as that!
Yes I considered this when creating the video as it was how I first learnt the modes.
Some people have trouble with this because each mode uses the same notes and they struggle to see or hear the difference.
Like so much in music theory, there are many ways to explain the same thing!

Maannn, we don't use that ish!! You CAN'T play a power chord with that mode!!!
This type of explanation usually only confuses me more. It seems that all instructions are based on using the major scale in the key of C. I would to see examples in several other keys to help clear my fog.
