- After winning the Sebring 12hrs, Audi stayed over to conduct tests of their new 2012 R18 e-tron quattro and ultra Le Mans racecars. Leo Parente and /DRIVE were invited to observe and talk with the team. Watch the e-tron in action, listen to the thoughts of Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich [Head of Audi Sport], Ulrich Baretsky [Head of Engine Development] and Allan McNish [one of the 2012 Sebring winning Audi racers]. And more.

I could watch this for hours. Thanks for sharing! Love love LOVE what you're doing with this channel!
14:30 There you go F1 2014 era with active pre-chamber system. A gasoline with a diesel-like combustion
Another great video from Leo, JF and the drive crew! Thanks for all of the hard work and keep it up!
This is definitively one of the best videos from shakedown! I've been watching for 1yr+ and this is definitively the most informative along with the driver line and corner apex discussion.
Once again, another great episode with insightful interviews. This is rapidly becoming my favorite channel on youtube.
Great Show Guys! Kinda cool to run into Leo at Sebring. Love the show keep up the good work.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels, keep up the great features guys
Impressive insights! Thank Leo and team.
I am impressed and simply just can't get enough of this kind of insight. Leo and everyone involved should be applauded at this effort.
Fantastic show. The R-18 is such an amazing vehicle
Drive is getting better everyday. Great shots, great interviews, great commentary and tons of great info. Drive is by far, my favorite car show.
Congratulations guys, you're setting the bar pretty high.
Keep up the excellent work.
That was a great SHAKEDOWN, the best so far and that's saying something. You're interviewing some of the titans of motorsport here, very nice!
Cracking video, great insight into the aspects of racing us fans don't normally get to appreciate to the full. Thanks!
If racing season is just starting and there's tons of info to go over, perfect multi subject show. Keep up the good work.
fantastic video! reeeally looking forward for the next weekend.
This is my favourite YT channel! Brilliant behind the scenes interviews!
Leo and JF please keep this up! This is what I love about automotive racing. The details of understanding what mfg's are trying to develop and getting behind the scenes of interviewing with the drivers is such a big thing to me. I really feel as enthusiast and consumers we can build a loyalty to the brand off of this. I hope other racing manufactures will give this kind of access to you guys in the near future like Audi did.
Another great episode. I'm really loving the "inside baseball" interviews and your explanations behind what the drivers and data are saying, it gives more understanding and context to little things that might be missed otherwise. Its making me a better, more informed fan, so thank you for that. Great work guys, keep it up!!!!!!!!!!
That is a fantastic inside view on after-raceday testing. I am looking forward to watching the 6hrs of Spa.
loving the work guys
This is awesome - and i hope this sort of quality programming is the future of youtube. Very very well done.
Leo, your collaboration with Audi Motorsports makes the best programs on UA-cam. This episode of Shakedown just did what I thought wouldn't be done, top the uncut McNish from last week. That last clip at the end with the lead engine designer was awesome. Seeing what this team has done for diesel tech that has trickled to road cars I really hope his wish comes true and Audi moves to gas engines for a season in the future. I think it would be huge for the survival of that engine's future.
Leo - Excellent series of videos with Audi and McNish. This is racing technology and development in action and it's amazing to see it summed up like this from the chief players in the team.
Awesome episode!
thx LEO!!! great job...
Great video. When I first started to follow DRIVE, because of Chris Harris, it seems the Shakedown shows are getting better and better every time. Always looking forward to Mondays and Fridays! :)
As someone already mentioned, un-edited interviews (or at least longer versions) would be greatly appreciated. Especially Ulrich Baretzky, it's crazy, the amount of knowledge this guy must have locked up in that top shelf.
Magnificent work, what a fortunate opportunity to spend so much time with some of the worl´s greatest. Hopefully you can do similar shows with people from ALMS, Nascar or any other big category. Bravo!!!!
I just want to say great job Leo. I felt you were under appreciated by viewers on fastlanedaily. I have commented a few times about F1 and I enjoy how you are willing to voice your opinion while still listening to others to learn more. I enjoyed shakedown then, even if the info was more braod, but it's even better now with less restrictions. Keep up the awesome work!
The last 54 seconds were awesome...all of it was actually, THANKS!
Thank you Audi for being so open during your testing!
Hey Leo - came at this through Chris Harris on pistonheads. Will be coming back for more. Great to get an inside ahead of the endurance races in 2012 and thanks for the insightful look at F1 for this season so far, much appreciated.
Best episode on the Drive channel so far!
That last little bit at the end with the engine guy and going back to gas engines was really fascinating.
Love the video and also great effort from Drive. It was cool to get a little bite out of how Dr. Ulrich and the other engineer Ulrich Baretzky see the team and car evolving. Nice from them for letting Drive to have a few words with the drivers as well.
Leo & JF EXCELLENT and I mean Excellent journalist/ editing skills story was interesting and informative helped the viewer connect with the story on many different levels with out ever being dull (for it's length) Great Job Guys keep up the Good WORK!
Excellent show. Extremely well photographed, edited, scripted. The professionalism of this show is definitely showing. I learned a lot. Thank you.
@LeoParente @Drive Good stuff again guys, really love getting Leo the chance to talk to Racers about racing its great information and gets me way more excited about actually paying attention. Thanks to the Drive team for their hard work on this
This is amazing.
This is quality youtube, congrats!!!
McNish is really good at explaining things from a driver's perspective and he seems to be an extremely nice guy as well.
Same goes for all of the Audi team really, as mentioned before the last minute was very interesting indeed.
Thanks Drive!
Fantastic!
I love these cars it's incredible how far the technology has gone, being a road racer,(italian too)this is my dream car,job to drive the prototypes sports car,I love Allan Mcnish his quote from a later interview, because everyone wants to know what it like to drive hybrid P1 car,he explained the different areas of managing both fuel and electric systems, and his final word he said,at the end of the day it's the same, you step on the go fast pedal,to go,and you step on the go slow pedal, and you turn steer hoop in front of you, like any other race car,I love that and it's going on the back of my race helmut, thanks Allan, thanks to you guys for the great video,I love Sebring, and I love airport racetracks, turns out Sebring used to be an airport,I've been drive a sim in a LmP2 2010 Honda v6twinturbo,down to 1min58sec,place is bumpy as hell, looks bumpier in this video, but is such a fun track, short but one hell of a work out, much more than Le Mans 8.47miles,is walk in park in comparison,I love le mans just as much though...as road racer you never get tired of sweepers, they fun and challenging at the same times, there's that line you walk to get them right or mess them up...it good challenge...thanks,I love silver, may be we can work out details of monthly payment plan..
hah..
good work, this is a fine video
Leo- your part of drive is awesome. the level of insight and your unique ability to voice your point of view keeps the show interesting and informative. I read in one of your posts lower on this video that there is an internal debate on whether your show should be on one topic or many topics or should you be in the studio or abroad... For what ever its worth I think variety is the spice of life. If you got a topic that deserves an entire show ie (audi testing r 18's) thats perfect.
This was soo good!
Great video, Leo!
i love Baretzky.. seems like such a cool guy :P..
nice job Leo and Co.. always a pleasure to watch stuff from DRIVE.. keep it up..
Great stuff. The comments at the end about achieving the combination of power and efficiency with diesel, as well as its potential with direct injection gasoline engines, was fascinating.
Thanks a lot.
How nice of Audi to invite you to stay on and see the car running and all the interviews, Good team is Audi
Yes, you nailed it. One guy is doing it all here on /DRIVE. The rest of us are just watching + applauding. TEAM, amwdw37. Just like Audi + Dr. Ullrich's vision.
This is absolutely brilliant ! Keep op the good work :)
Could you please upload the unedited versions of the interviews with the Audi people, especially the one with Ulrich Baretsky, he all ways got some extremely interesting technical insides, like "Diesel vs Petrol" in the end of the video.
I love this format of shakedown. (the last one too :D).
maaan!! that was sooo awesome, those guys working for Audi r geniuses!!
i can listen to the old guy at the end for hours without boredom
More and more i love this channel. Love AUDI so was very interesting :)
this channel is so bad ass, i love it
I've always loved the Audi's more. They just look amazing and their performance is incredible.
Great video Leo, keep it coming :) I will be watching Le Mans, for the first time :P
That comment at the end really made my day. Good to see prototype racing hasn't gone totally clinical on us.
Awesome!
FINALLY! A good car show, damn it took a while.
Loved that last little tease about the possibility of a petrol car
Stunning work gentlemen. JF must have been in Audi heaven all day (insert Derek's JF voice).
1.44.8??? this is fantastic, Audi is like a big motivated family working together and working hard. Go Audi, you're the best!!!!
Beautiful car. Never would of imagined a 24hr hybrid/diesel. SCIENCE!
Well, that was epic.
Baretsky lives in the land of the engines....love that guy.
According to a German paper, on the 11th of March, Lotterer did a 1:42.6!! in the new 2014 R18 e-tron quattro when Audi and Porsche was testing their LMP1s at Sebring, before the 12 Hour race
thanks
That last clip made my day
I second this. Not only does his accent remind me of Schwarzenegger's, he has a wealth of the type of automotive knowledge I like to listen to!
There is no better production to what Audi is, No1.
Now, this is car show!
yes it has
I heard from a good source that the e-tron quattro managed a 1:43.XXX at some point in the test. That is hugely impressive.
God, these were the days for /DRIVE. UA-cam, bring back the funding! /DRIVE, bring back Leo!
Wow, I'm really getting into how Shakedown is progressing, especially the exposure to the scenes behind the track and teams. How can we get you to cover F1 like this?
Love the ending on what he had to say about direct injection
wow, the ending statement :o
My Fav. Track.... Saw Audi WIN, the 12Hrs in 2013 ! Awesome Car... 👍
Love to see how far can R18 pull from the new 750hp Nismo Delta wing.
This channel started off slow, but you guys have been putting out some fantastic shows
I'm an engine designer and I have been saying for some time now that the leaps that diesels have made with fuel injectors, injection-types, piston bowls and general combustion chamber design that petrol cars are still in the dark ages compared to a modern diesel. Stick all that technology in to a petrol and watch it go.
Gerardo video
Was thinking same. But I asked many drivers if they felt the fin - in the wind or turning [in yaw]. Answer was no. Only I racers added it did effect the rear wing. But would not explain if its keeping the air channeled to the wing cleaner for more downforce OR blocking the wing in yaw forcing less downforce. Bottomline answer was fin was no problem. And fin + fender holes maybe stopped Timo crash from being a flip.
That was interesting.
love listening to leo and all his knowledge if drive loses leo it loses my sub, and that audi looks ridiculously quick and beautiful
Yes, as I wrote in an earlier comment. My bad, with too many Italian racer names in my head - Ivan Capelli v Dindo Capello. Damn!
Great focused episode. I'm just missing the interview with Tom Kristensen. Are we not getting that?
Josh Vietze did the final edit. JF, Josh, + Tom Morningstar were trackside.
owned an Audi A3 for 6 years and i have had no problems with the car, Audis are very reliable and powerful if you know how to service them.
the quality of this show is... uber:)
Interesting things from Ulrich at the end.
Best team in the world! Audi Sport!!!!
Great score DRIVE.
always disappointed knowing the new cars are at sebring but audi never run them for the 12hr race, always just before or after for testing :-(
A great episode after all the recent rubbish thrown out from drive. What Ulrich Baretzky said at the end of the video is very interesting and I wonder in what form will his dream of a new gasoline engine would come in...
1:42 this downforce is just incredible O.O
Calm, boo. I feel you. Monday will be BIGTIME F1 and more. Maybe it seems to you that we got sucked into the vortex of maximizing the dollars spent for the Sebring roadtrip. But, I too am struggling [more than you know] with SD field reports - how to use ALL that we get vs the studio stuff that you all seem to like, too]. We debate internally 1-topic shows vs many subejcts. I watch what /DRIVE vids the audience views most [+ it seems 2 be cars in motion vs me in studio]. Trying 2 balance.
Isn't the car #2 shown in the beginning at around 1:45 labelled "ultra", indicating the non-hybrid version??
