the engineers of one of the lmp teams said, they build these cars to be easy to drive, Fast is important but dont forget that at 24 hours of le mans, the drivers will drive this up to 10 hours, so comfort is important at endurance cars.
Barış Karasakız endurance cars will also sometimes have a slower more comfortable setup
Times of comfortable cars in endurance racing are over. Those cars are build to be as fast as possible in combination with low fuel and low tire consumption. When i think back ten years, yes - cars where build and the setup was made to put the lowest possible stresslevel into the driver. Today the competition is so hard - just finishing does not guarantee you a good place. You have to be fast also.
@@Kai_ST200 You don't watch WEC based on your comment lol
@@Harmonic14 tell me what is wrong. I am watching every WEC Race, many of them at the racetrack, because i know many mechanics, engineers and drivers. I am driving for myself in TCR class in VLN (ich denke die kennst du 😉) and some Creventic events. If you think there was no competition, because only Toyota is in LMPH, i can tell you, there are some other classes like that privateers in LMP1 and also LMP2 and GT classes :)
@@Kai_ST200 what he means is the cars are stable, won't spin and go into a low-earth orbit on every mistake, and also they value consitency over fastest lap time
I'm pretty sure there was an experiment (in simulator, with actual racing drivers) witch showed that drivers maintaining a "fast, but consistent" pace was the best on average. Because if you really are driving constantly at "100%" you'll make mistakes that cost you more time.
Thank you for driving better than 99.99% of journalists. Almost every journalist drive makes me angry, but you did the car good justice. Top quality work. Subbed.
PS: The issue with the Ferrari FF was totally Ferrari's fault for wanting to go low profile to appease the target audience. A great car can take a kerbing.
Yes, like a pro!
the lights going off at the end is almost heartbreaking
daily hooligan almost wanted to try seeing that
daily hooligan not almost... it is heartbreaking :(
This is not a car, it's a piece of art.
That sound is amazing.
It makes me so sad that Audi has left the LMP program. A beautiful machine!
BTW: Fantastic video.
Thank you!
its the americans fault, if the americans hadnt biched as much about the VW Scandal, audi would still be in endurance, VW would still be in rally
Mursi83 o I didn’t know that i felt a bit confused at the end
You are funny :)
Damian Blakemore I
"I'm so glad Audi pulled out so they can focus on the thrilling spectacle that is Formula E!"-
Said no one ever.
turboboy1983 I was about to punch you in your teeth. Until I read the closing remark.
Those that actually know why Audi was forced to leave WEC will indeed not say that.
Live by the diesel, die by the diesel right?!
jody024 why were they forced to leave?
Žiga P. Škraba diesel gate and porsche
Where did this channel pop out of
Chicken Soup for the Loser everywhere
premium stuff
The old top gear trio aka the new grand tour trio made it
decided to advertise their videos for once
Chicken Soup for the Loser Straight out of Clarkson's ass!
I think LMP1 feels sexier than an F1
Yes it looks better imo, but the sound is questionable
Justice Clark That’s because the F1 cars are also restricted lol
Feels?
Elyas the 919 sounds way better then an f1 car
Big f1 fan but it’s true lmp1 looks way cooler
The traction was incredible, even on those tyres
tyres LUL
X-ImWazz-X that's how the FIA officially spells it LUL
Whoa, you really know your tires!?
you know whats sad?
this was the first year for this brandnew car.
It had so much god damn potential.
Instead, we get the terrible terrible Formula Eeeeeee from them... (Was trying to immitate it's sound with the Eeeeee xD)
Michal Valta if you need to explain your joke, then it was a bad joke
DONT USE GODS NAME IN VAIN
That undernose architecture @ 1:34. Best shot ever.
Happy to see Jethro again after mourning his absence on the Evo channel, his genuine enthusiasm is infectious.
6:15 the most beautiful sound ive ever heard
Damn this channel is taking over
Tyler Cochran yeah drivetribe is a car-platform created by jeremy clarkson, so all the best car-porn will come out on this channel, with the best journo names making vid's on it!
Yes🍾🍾❤
Not this guy, Top Gear trio
Nicholas, for real? ... It's a Clarkson backed channel? ... Damn, sounds too good to be true. So he owns the rights and gets to decide what goes on it and not?
And now it's shit. I bet these journalists were too good to be underneath the now overscripted and tired old Top Gear hosts who started drivetribe.
i got goosebumps at the shot where the lights turn off and the r18 sits in the dark. the season hasnt even started and im already missing them
Such a fantastic machine. Its a shame they left. The problem is that both Audi and Porsche are under the VW group. Also it seems like there was cost cutting going on cause VW themselves left rally.
Wonder why that may be...
I'm sure, that cost cutting is the biggest reason why. Also, Porsche is more titled and more legendary team of Le Mans, so it's why Audi had to leave, not Porsche. Unfortunately :(
I don't think it was planned from the beginning. But then dieselgate started happening which instantly raised questions about money which raised questions about motorsport budget. The fact that Audi used their LMP1 program to promote their TDI (diesel) engines and technology probably didn't help either.
It might be much easier then that. Let's say political even. Reminds me a bit of Mesarati Ferrari in mid 2000 with the MC12. The group might need to push the Porsche brand now redirecting founding toward that brand. Or it could be a temporary break from Audi untill some new gamebreaking ideas will come up.
History told us that when Audi comes back, it will be with a platform 10 years ahead of competition (Quattro rally, IMSA GT, diesel powered R-1x and who knows what's next).
they need the money for their deisel emissions fines
The beauty of an Audi, in the words of Jimmer Broadbent “The Audi inspires confidence” I miss Audi so much in LMP1
Big fan of the R18.. Really SUCKS about them no longer competing at Le Man.
They havent competed since the king of lemans porsche returned
And fuck diesel racing
no , i`m not .
Haha ignorant people like you make me laugh.
Ден С why fuck diesel racing? the fucking thing obliterated lemans
Yeah :/
The sound when he rose his foot from the gas is the sexiest sound I've ever heard!
We will miss Audi. Such great inspirations. The team that designed the cars are outstanding. Beautiful, fast, and quiet LMP1 race car.
that diesel torque combined with hybrid electric torque must feel REALLY good out of corners :3
I'll miss this car in the WEC. One of a kind and will probably never be seen again.
abyssunderground all top tier racecars are one of a kind. they all have the smallest of differences to try and have what it takes to beat the other guys
the smoke coming off the brakes, just epic. wow. you're one of a few people in the world who got to drive that car. amazing.
brilliant material. no whining about how hard driving the thing is, just straightforward interesting clips and a bit of commentary after.
visibility looks poor, I won't buy one
Suckit up I would because racecar lol
Suckit up of course u wont
r/whoosh
This was sarcasm ya dopes
That went right over their heads.
Very detailed, excellent camera work & editing. Never saw the Audi R18 so clearly on UA-cam.
Too bad Audi quits in 2017. It's boring with just Porsche and Toyota in LMP 1.
Watched this again recently, and this is what quality Motor Journalism should be.
Highlights the standout features, the sounds and feel un-intruded, leaves with a story of the emotions and significance.
I love your videos for the fact that they focus so much on the aspects of the car and driving and is a pure thrill for petrolheads like me. Also the camera angles are super as they focus more on the track and on showing how it would look were we ourselves sitting in the driver's seat and that is awesome! Great camera direction and great making
1000hp and 800kg? What a pants shitting car.
Don't forget the crazy amount of torque.
Diesel Gate started it, with VAG having to pay tens of Billions they HAD to make cuts, and with Porsche owning over 50% of VAG and the FIA diesel regulations in WEC it was right thing to do to take audio out of WEC. Promoting diesel was just not the right thing to do at the time. Too many people think Audi traded WEC for Formula E but that is simply not the case.
Great video. I usually only watch the troublesome trio for cars because most reviews are a forced smile and shouting "wow" and "the feel!". Nice to have a calm, precise video that doesn't exhaust me to watch.
Outstanding video Jethro! The content coming from Drive Tribe is world class!
why does it sound like game over when its downshifting
Straight cut gears
wrong. that's the hybrid system recharging when braking
Javier Rosado Jr. it’s partly that and just transmission noise
Zak Walls Exactly, it's what a whole bunch of power being transferred sounds like when you can't hear the engine noise.
It`s really sad that Audi isn`t going to be in Le Mans 2017! I gonna miss that car.. ):
Sadly not i would love to see the R18 again same with the 919
I just found this channel out of nowhere. And I love it.
Fantastic, I can feel your excitement for the drive and the loss of an old friend through the video!
From 4th gear to 1st sounds so amazing
Would love to relive the golden times when LeMans had the best manufactures going head to head.
Funny you should say that...
The noises the thing makes in the cabin are amazing.
Blimey, that was just perfect from start to finish.
Proper proper work guys, this might as well be the best car channel on YT I've come across.
3:27 PUTIN!!!!!
Man, that guy shows up in the unlikeliest of places. =0
*SMP Racing Intensifies*
Can you make a video of the 919 hybrid?
It's been a while Mr Bovingdon, youtube needs more car stuff from you. Top notch car journalism mate 👍🏽
Hope to see more videos like this! Jethro does an amazing job, I've followed his work for years in EVO (in print and on UA-cam) and he's a humble, likeable chap with a genuine love of cars.
SUBSCRIBED!!
is it normal to get teary eyed watching the POV part of this vid.the decceleration & acceleration sounds... the stiffness of the suspension and rigidity of the chasis one can pick up from how the car bounces along.... i swear not even sex come close to what he was experiecing over there. Sensory overload!
Deon Mpofu no. Its not normal.
Aditya Malik Passion!
Sounded like a super-charged tractor.
you're not alone mate, i fapped too!
Outstanding!
Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
this is my new favourite channel on youtube.... i hope you guys dont get shy to post long videos.
Couldnt someone buy those parts and build their own car for 2017 season? Seems a waste to let those parts dust in some factory warehouse.
It'd be prohibitively expensive to run. The budget for these kinds of cars is far above what a privateer team running at Le Mans usually spends.
SimonC979 Aston Martin needs an LMP1 car lol
MS if Audi is willing to sell them, and i reckon they will if they havent already. then yea a group could literally race their car. budget wise. not a good idea, i mean yea there's potential to make money in racing but manufacturers are those who benefit the most out of motorsports. privateers just run them for fun. i cant wait to see the car though. im sure we'll see what it looked like eventually
Must be some billionaire. Most sources say Audi had a budget of ca. 100-130 million Euros per season, Porsche being somewhere in that region as well. Some even say Audi had a budget of up to 240 million Euros per season. Toyota is much lower with estimated 40-70 million which can easily be seen by the lower number of cars competing.
In Dubio Pro Porsche yea the money put into racing is crazy. In F1 for example, the 2014 season (the first when the 1.6L V6 Turbo Hybrid powertrains came in) Red Bull (not Toro Rosso) alone for their 2 main cars were spending 400 million for 1 year. Understandably they wanted to defend their 4 year streak but i think Mercedes-Benz was spending around 200 million. And even smaller teams like Williams and Force India were much faster than Red Bull that season
17 seconds in and already the mistake of not mentioning Peugeots LeMans victory of 2009 against Audis best efforts and Porsche winning in 2015.
Both of those teams didn't need a particulary long time to beat Audi at their own game.
The intro sums it up perfectly. Absolute goals
Awesome onboard footage mate, great video all round.
Sounds better than a 2016 F1 car
an f1 2016 car sounds better than an ignorant f1 fan whining, right?
Ariff tbh it doesnt
the only good sounding thing on the audi is the whole electric part during acceleration and recuperation under braking. The diesel rumble is triggering af
Lets break it down once for all. What is better sound? High revs, Bee fucking? Exactly, Le Mans is about endurance and high rev makes things unreliable, I don’t give much fucks about how F1 sound, it doesn’t carry that level of entertainment and passion that Le Mans has.
Hope you se how it sounds in real life you won't say that if you do trust me.
Tractor❤️
Great video, it was an interesting behind the scenes close up of those prototypes. I think if I could choose and series to race in it would be in Damon and team! I enjoy your videos so much, it's nice to get someone's feedback who can actually drive these cars in the way the were designed to be driven and hear your feedback on the handling characteristics of each particular car. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next video(s).
Wonderful job on this one DriveTribe team!
Sadly the oil industry are the villains in the shadows who intimidated the halt of diesel hybrid development.
To have a 80-140mpg car be consumer available within the decade will not be allowed.
I already commented....
Well...just bought a Bluetooth wraparound headset and played this as my first, and the sounds that this diesel makes, with that regeneration unit onboard.....the sound of perfected German technology. Mesmerizing.
there's no margin diesel electric in small cars, but they're used everywhere in busses costing 10x as much.
WHAT?!? A single turbo 4 litre Diesel-v6 produces 1000bhp?!? That's mental.
The Diesel Engine produces about 500 hp. The electric drivetrain gives this car the other 500 hp.
Well tbf if you think about it, the diesel also powers the electric drivetrain.
*3.7liter
Nah, just German engineering :-D
In a round about way.
probably the last time we will see this fantastic car run by these fantastic people... great video!! but I fear that Audi pulling out of lmp1 is the start of the end of this golden era of sportscar racing (at the sharp end anyway) come back soon Audi we miss you already and the next season hasn't even started yet!
THIS GUY ACTUALLY KNOWS HOW TO DRIVE, HE THROTTLED AT THE RIGHT MOMENTS AND HAD GOOD BRAKING
It kills me this car is sitting on the sidelines now, it was amazing to see it at COTA and I hope I get to see it when I go to Germany. Really stupid decision of VAG to park a car that can run for 24 hours for a car that can't run 30 mins before you have to swap cars to complete the hour long race.
Formula-E and electric cars in general have a great potential in them. They need improvements, yes, LOTS OF developments and corrections, but the time will come when electric cars will easily match the performance, durability and efficiency of the petrol and diesel cars.
Having Audi, Mercedes, BMW and Nissan (basically Renault) in FE, and furthermore all of the above plus Tesla, Porsche and Volkswagen on the public roads, the improvements will most probably come way faster.
Meanwhile on Top Gear clips - "Clarkson would have done better". Lol no.
Jethro you have a job that every car person would love to have but a very few in the world that can actually do it. I'm man enough to say that I would love your job but there so no way i am anywhere near capable of driving such a machine. Love your honest insights and keep up the great work!
Bring back this drivetribe
if you search LMP1 with great engine sound, check for Rebellion !
Claudy_Focan the Aston Martin Lola
Ferrari F333 SP
Bet i would overtake it up by my mini morris
Yeah if he having a cup of tea and eating his lunch :)
Planinski Graditelj seveda bi haha 😉
Quite epic content actually, this video and the driftmas stuff too. I can`t remember subscribing but i remember joining drivetribe, so it`s all good. Quality stuff really.
Superb video. I still cannot imagine what that thing feels like! But only because I've never experienced anything close to it.
Anybody here after Audi said they're coming back to Le Mans?
Thought the R8 was badass? Try the R18.
The drive of a lifetime! And hey, nothing more to prove here, they totally dominated it with heroic drivers and incredible technology.
This really has to be undescribably amazing! I had the pleasure to sit in a still standing toyota ts050 at the frankfurt motor show and can only imagine how fantastic it has to be to drive a lmp1 car. Truly sad that audi left..
Started winning when Porsche left, started losing again when Porsche returned
Daniel Parisi Porsche werent great when they first came back on the scene with the 919. of course they had to work out technical difficulties and such but still. Audi did good while they were there. they still had some fierce competition even when Porsche wasn't there
Porsche left before Audi entered though.
they won le mans in 2014 when porsche started and they still made really well in 2015 and 2016
Wasn't the 919 performing well already in 2014 and then dropped out cause of child deseases? Not trying to take Audi's respect, but the 919 is a very good car so it wouldn't have won 15,16 and 17 and 14 it was up with the others =)
The Real Kurti they had a good car in 2014 but not good enough. Then 2015 they were strong. 2016 they almost lost it but i think it's fair to say it's mostly luck that came to their rescue and 2017 they didnt have the superior car but Toyota faced issues that Porsche didnt and Porsche were able to capitalize on it. Regardless the wins were earned and they deserved it just as much as any other team would have
Sounds like a diesel van
Rodrigo Deffune well it's a diesel
Sad to see Audi leave. Awesome ride and review.
You know what’s even more beautiful than this Audi? The ad that failed to play when it was supposed to.
Audi should've stopped their irrelevant DTM-program instead of leaving LMP1 where history can be made.
DTM is amazing !
What's your problem with DTM? It's by far the most important racing car championship of the Germans, so it's only natural for the major German constructors to compete in it. Audi has been in there for many decades now, even in the old era of DTM in the 1980s and '90s, so it's a part of the DTM history, as well as the all-time superior Mercedes.
Well, yes, Mercedes has just left, but it doesn't change my point.
This did not age well in 2020...
Hehe, absolutely. DTM was relevant in the 80s & 90s when the competition was huge and amazing and it was also ok in the era of 2000 to 2002, but after that it went downhill steeper and steeper and never recovered. In the last years it was a totally irrelevant shadow of it former self pretending technical competition but using BOP whenever it seemed fit NASCAR-like. What a joke. There's no way back for Audi though since LMP1-H will end and it's replacement will be a fully BOPed class as worthless as DTM. Real motorsports in terms of 4-wheel racing as a whole is close to dead and as bad as F1 nowadays is compared to the early 90s I must sadly say that it'll become the last unicorn once LMP1-H is done.
Total and utter domination? Porsche is the most successful team with 18 victories and if Toyota didn't have ridiculously bad luck, they'd won a couple as well.
18 wins over many decades. Audi won 13 in 17 years. Fancy that as a percentage?
ellasOLE22 Porsche retired from Le Mans for long periods of time though.
Truly impressive at anything they do: Rallye, Trans Am, Imsa GTO, Pikes Peak, Le Mans etc.
Thank you Audi for all the good memories and entertainment!
Nice driving there mate !! You did the car justice ^^
Porsche 919 all day!

The sound of the car under braking.... crazy! It stays in your mind.
Great video! Really miss Audi...
Aaaannnnddd now Porsche is out. This f*•~king sucks.
beat everyone
yay
Terrific! Well done.
Let me just tell you how good this car is ... Gran Turismo is the closest thing you can get to a simulation of racing in video games and it's quite difficult to go into this game expecting to take every corner like it's NFS ... this car makes it easy mode lol it's that brilliant of a car.
too bad they went to shit when the original kings of lemans showed up, Porsche.
Porsche didn't win outright till the 1970. Le Mans was nearly 50 years old by then. Hardly the first kings. They are the most successful though, by number of wins.
thanks for knowing how to make a video. I feel like I got a sense of what it's like to drive it.
Incredible achievement by Audi, and fantastic video. The engine on the R18 sounds like a bag of nails in a washing machine so still true to Audi diesel form on their production engines! 😉 LOVING this channel!
Beautiful video. Thank you.
Getting to drive this AND meeting Wolfgang Ulrich, you sir are the luckiest man on earth! Never found this channel before until now but I hit that sub button :)
Those first Audi’s looked like merc’s I love the Audi r18 ultra, the KERS system is crazy how it works the flywheel has to be in a vacuum because it spin at like Mach 3 or something crazy like that in the KERS system, love the way it sounds in the cockpit when you come into a braking zone
That's awesome. Great video!
If you haven't seen Truth in 24, you are missing out on some of the history behind this story. I suspect many of you have seen it. It's always great to go back and watch it. Much respect for all behind these teams.
What's this channel? It has the three from "Top Gear" and my favorite guy from EVO? How wonderful is that
Audio always produced my favourite lmp1-cars since they entered...
nice work Jethro.. smokin' the brakes!
That whistling sound when braking is amazing in my opinion
