- It's FINALLY here! Sorry for the wait, everyone, I wanted to make sure that this one was as quality as I could make it! I put several days of work and editing into this one, so I hope you enjoy it!
Today, we take a look at the world of Dragon Quest Monsters and how it does monster collecting in a way that feels refreshing and thrilling to the genre that was previously dominated by Pokemon! Perhaps Pokemon has a new friendly competitor in the future! :D

A Couple notes:
When I said, grow into it's own, I meant with storytelling in Pokemon
What I meant by not having a way to share EXP with Pokemon, I knew of the EXP Share, I meant sharing EXP to Pokemon in storage, as well.
DQMJ1 released back in 2006, and DQMJ2 in 2011.
There, hope that clears some details I forgot. :D
I have been seriously missing DQM, and ever since Gen 6, pokemon has been an outright letdown.
It's crazy that even on DS the monsters are true to scale. But in 3DS wailord is tiny.. and that carries into SwSh.
And there is just so much charm and a good story in the DQM games. I think I've enjoyed the DQM games more thoroughly than Pokemon.
The fact that DQM did full 3D on the ORIGINAL DS while people went crazy for Diamond and Pearl lmfao little non moving IMAGES
I had the choice when I was a kid with my GBA. I got Pokémon Red as per the recommendation from the store clerk, but I also got a cute little game for my birthday called DWM2: Tara's Adventure. I played a bunch of both but after a bit of time... the 3v3 battles, hands-off combat style, breeding system, the engaging story, and the visual and auditory aesthetic won over my heart time and again. I beat DWM2 3 times, whereas I cannot recall "completing" a single Pokémon game. Once I get all the badges, I instantly lose all interest.
I really wanted to like Pokémon. I love the style of that franchise too; so clean and cute. However, gameplay just pales in comparison, in my opinion.
This is a really solid comparison and retrospective of the two series. I grew up with Pokemon in the states like everyone else and always assumed there was nothing else like it. Then through emulation I was able to discover the DQM series. After being confined to the limitations of Pokemon I was blown away by how refreshing Joker 1 and 2 felt. Being able to visually see monsters on the map was a very cool concept that I felt took Gamefreak WAY too long to get to, and still isn't where it should be.
I'm currently halfway through Joker 3 and the ability to ride ANY monster in the overworld, with monsters having different jump and movement style is so damn cool. And it reminded me...Sun and Moon ride Pokemon. But DQM did it first and WAY better imo (DQM released in March of 2016, S&M in Nov 2016.)
I love Pokemon, don't get me wrong, but considering how much money these games make there really is no reason why we can't get fully unique animations for attacks, the ability to have them follow you around and like DQM better world building and ambiance. I should be able to literally see a stupid Pikachu in the grass and catch it, not just generic grass and then a battle encounter. I should be able to ride on an Arcanine over the fields and jump over cliffs. Like you said, budget cannot be an excuse for limitations, these games make an absurd amount of money.

Back in the early 2000’s my dad got me DQM2 in the game boy color. I still have both and this game is my favorite RPG. I’m currently playing the 3DS remake and it really seems like this series is giving Pokémon a run for its money. If a new game releases on the switch and next gen consoles it would be a dream come true for me.

Great video. Just a side note, the first pokemon game to introduce animations at the start of battle was actually Crystal, which makes it more embarrassing that we had to wait for Emerald to bring them back.

Just when i was thinking on playing DQMJ2professional again, this video pops up in my recommendations, is good to see that there are others who also love this spin-off series as much as i do. Great video by the way, i always loved the DQM mechanics and you nailed it in explainig all of them in contrast with pokemon with their pros and cons, you earned a sub.

When I was a kid I only went back to Pokemon once I had finished Joker and Rocket Slime. Between Pokemon and DQ there's such a stark difference in creativity and effort, in every way it's obvious the superior game.
This is such a solid video. I hope your channel grows in direct proportion to how much work you seemed to put into this. DQM is an underrated series!
Square enix should rerelease all 4 titles on the switch, might take a while to remake the entire ui, but the amount of money they would make would be great for them lol
It would be so much better if they didn't touch the UI... Or anything else really. Just about every remake/remaster over the last 5-10 years have, at best, lost the core experience, tone, and aesthetic character of the original. More often, these elements end up either totally destroyed or perverted. We don't need anything more than a port, unless (like FF1) parts of the game are actually literally broken.
Anything beyond that starts to veer into "Enhanced Port" territory, which, tbh, are basically just remasters, while "Remasters" have gotten drastic enough that they're essentially remakes. As for "Remakes"? They've become totally separate games altogether. In some cases (FFVII) they embrace it and it works out great, in others (Yakuza Kiwami 1+2 come to mind as easy examples, but also just most remakes of 5th and 6th gen games) they try to be the "definitive edition", but wind up inferior to the originals in many ways.
Yeah, at this point, I do not trust that any remake/master will be anything but disappointing. Or rather, I don't expect them to have any merit, so I'm never disappointed when they inevitably fall flat in the face of expectations.
Now if only they would bring the last three Dragon Quest Monster games here.
"Prosper" is a bit much when 99% of people never heard of Monsters before.
I want the professional versions and Dragon Quest Joker 3 to come to the US soon.

There is a new dqm game in development but is currently having development issues
We will most likely have news for it next year and hopefully it gets localized as well
but as long as we generate enough buzz for the game hopefully it'll be localized

I'm just waiting on a switch game. Been playing DQM sense Gameboy and Gameboy color. Loved it more than pokemon. Better stories, battle system, breeding system, EVERYTHING. For fuck sake the first game you play as kid Terry!! The most badass guy in DQ history. An don't get me started on how freaking awesome rocket slime was and why we need more of that.
I just hope you're as hyped as I am for that new one! There's an untapped market for "how to breed x" videos.

God this video made me so nostalgic. I grew up playing DQMJ1 before I really got into any pokemon game hardcore because my older brother told me it was good and let me borrow it to play. Such good memories. 2 was even better. God I miss these games.

Great video dude. Dragon Quest Monsters need more credit. I have the 3ds remakes of 1&2 and DQMJ3 Professional. I've always wanted there to be English translations. If you ever get a chance to play DQMJ3 professional you are in for a treat.

I still remember my parents buying DQM on GBC, likely not knowing the difference between it and Pokémon. However, I'm so glad they did because I played DQM endlessly and could still do the same today...Pokémon Red and Blue doesn't have the same effect.

I’ve had DQMJ2 for a while and recently I looked at the back of the box and saw that it was compatible with Dragon Quest IX(which I also have) for tag mode. I was just wondering how this works. Does it work similarly to tag mode with another DQMJ2 copy? Will it allow me to get more than 1 captain crow? Any info helps.

Use the questers rest search feature (DQIX) and tag mode (J2) at the same time and you will encounter a slime stack, teeny sanguini, or (very rarely) the rank S Shogum! (Which requires two metal kaiser slimes to get normally)

Dqmj was my favorie childhoodgame and I always thought i was better pokemon. We had like a team of four who always tried to make the best monsters, we helped each other with sytheses , like when I discovord how to make Mambojumboh, and just send the others monsters when they were stuck since you can just turn monsters around like its nothing.

I haven't played a DQM game yet, but I agree, while Pokemon has been going downhill since BW, DQM just keeps growing in scope. I hope to get into the series with the latest one that's gonna be announced next month

I've always thought DQM games were just way better than Pokemon consistently. I was obsessed with Terry's wonderland in the 90s. I was so sad that no one knew what it was and just considered it some kinda inferior pokemon rip-off.

All this comparison and yet not even in top grossing switch game.
Don't get me wrong, i fell in love with DQm but after that the localization of the game is somewhat falling. It is not accessible to all. Heck I nevee heard other games of DQ until now. So surprise that it has a lot. So i'm hoping in the future it can be remastered or whatever so it can be introduce to more players.

Just learn to read japanese kanji and have a Us based DS or ds light and get dragon quest monsters joker 2 professional and you have almost 1,000 different monsters with unique animations (allthough some are just recolors with different attributes and some are no longer obtainable outside of cheating) if they don't release it here in the west and you still have more monsters than pokemon sword and shield and all the other pokemon games combined (with unique animations and they spawn visabily on the fields, caves, tundras, mountains, temples, and alternate realms 7 years ago) game freak isn't even trying if dragon quest can do it on a DS from as early as 2002 hardware than Gamefreak can have atleast 6 or 7 hundred pokemon fully animated in sword and shield (all nearly 1,000 of the pokemon included have animation data in sword and shield you just can't use it outside of hacking(do not do this I do not endorse or encorage that) it has or will be removed to disprove that they can at somepoint) they can do better.
I only recommend learning Japanese if you’re actively going to need it. I personally don’t think it’s worth it if it’s solely just to play a few unlocalised games.

Disliking this video on principle because Sword and Sheild were fucking great and no one has ever heard of Dragon Quest Monsters and no one cares about it.
Sword and shield weren’t bad it’s just that game freak cut a lot of corners because when you are the biggest company you don’t try that hard anymore, the whole point of the video was to get more people into dragon quest and comment on how they arguably do some things better.
A lot of pokemon fans think sword and shield was bad but in hyped for legend arceus and dqm was way more advanced than pokemon back then
