Coming to Ni No Kuni after playing tons of other jrpgs and monster catching jrpgs is really disappointing. It is beautiful but most of the monster designs are not very interesting. It follows the town, dungeon, boss formula way too much. And the dungeon layouts were similar and boring. A lot of the Bandai Namco JRPGs like also Tales of Berseria stick to the same formula and mechanics hard.
I still really enjoyed it and played just that game like crazy whenever I had time for a whole 3 weeks before I beat it.

There is very little excitement when a Pokéball rolls 3 times anymore but the moment at the end of a battle when the specific Yokai you wanted approaches you never got old and I’m really bummed I won’t be able to play 4 and onward for any time soon since they aren’t being localized.

My Dragon Quest/Pokemon frame of reference is Dragon Warrior Monsters and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. And then the first three Dragon Quest games on the Game Boy/Color under the title of Dragon Warrior.

I still keep calling it Dragon Warrior. My husband introduced me to the series back in 2000. DW3 was my favorite and I still like it more than alot of other classic RPG games.

Dragon Quest is the grandfather of all JRPGs essentially. It inspired them all pretty much. So, it shocks me when people were so baffled that it got into Smash when it deserves to be. An icon in gaming history for sure.

The Dragon Quest Adventure of Dai manga straight up had capsules for capturing monsters in it, and according to the wiki it came out in 89. The manga got an anime adaptation in the 90s, and it's currently in the middle of getting a modern remake that is criminally overlooked. I might go as far as to say it's the best anime to be based on a video game series.

Main difference of course being that monster catching is the central mechanic of pokemon while you could very well not recruit any monster in DQ5 and still finish the game.
And then Dragon Quest would eventually make their own "pokemon clone" sub-series... which I wish they'd return to.

I really need to go back and replay DQ5 at some point. I had binged DQ1, 2, 3, and 4 right before playing DQ5, and I was kind burnt out and had few a breaks throughout playing it that lasted a few months. I also never really used the monster recruiting mechanic very much. My main party at the end was just the Hero, his wife, his son, and his daughter. I also need to actually go back and do the post-game dungeon and boss. I'll probably go back to DQ5 after I finish the rest of the series. I don't really think DQ5 was all that amazing, and I don't know if that was just because I was burnt out or not, but it it my 3rd favorite in the series out of what I've played, my favorite being DQ11 and 2nd favorite being DQ4.

Dragon Quest V is truly a masterpiece. It's really a shame that it never took off in the west all that much compared to Japan. I've been a huge fan of it for a few years now, and I have to say I'm glad I got my hands on the DS versions of 4, 5, and 6 before they skyrocketed in price to where they are now. SE needs to get those three on Switch, it would be perfect for Dragon Quest's 35th anniversary this year....which is also being overshadowed by Zelda.

I only noticed recently that the only games I owned on my 3ds were from Pokémon and dragon quest (I've branched out a bit on the switch). I'd say dq8 is easily one of my favourite games of all time. I played it on PS2 so many times!

I think most ppl already know how good it is, because of all DQ Games, V on NDS is the most expensive. And im one of the idiots, never payed much attention to the series. Yes i own VII(3DS) and IX now, but this is easy for everyone. Going way back to the old Games, is what i try to do, but for that you have to dig deep in your pockets.
Luckily it's not like Pokemon, where the Games go to an absurd amound of money, even if all of them are sold millions.

I know it's an old video but you can easily find Pokémon pitch to Nintendo dated 1990 (Years before Dragon Quest 5) so no DQV didn't really did anything for it.

1:12 Hmm... Hard to argue that any DQ world is more open than the first one... I mean, you know that the only thing stopping you from going literally anywhere but the final area from the very start of the game is the strength of the enemies you'll find right? lol
2:02 Well, that's gonna depend on whether the enemy group you targeted is all dead yet or not, like, if they're all dead, and another party member targeted the same group, they'll whiff the attack, yeah, but if two of your party members target the same enemy group, and the group has two enemies, and one member defeats one enemy, the other member will just attack the other enemy in the same group, so like, it's not Perfect or anything, but DQ2 had a better battle system than FF1 despite having been released before it...
Also, yeah, DQ5 doing the whole Pokemon thing years before it is something I've been going on about for years lol
Like, yeah, I know about Megami Tensei, but like... Pokemon is a lot closer to DQ5 than to that one...
