Love your vids, cheif!
Where does rocket slime fit in?
Do one for Shin Megami Tensei, that's got more spinoffs and side series than anything else.
Edit: seems like a lot of people would love to see you play some MT/SMT games James :)
Most of them are not connected in any way to each other
Persona 3-5 are barely connected to 1-2 it seems.
@@dcb99filmz I ment smt as a whole persona while smt is it's own timeline
@@twistedluki2100 I'll be honest, I just want him to play some SMT titles. lol
@@dcb99filmz not the same universe, SMT IF created the persona 1/2 universe, persona 2 innocent sin created the P3 up to 5 universe
I disagree with James’ dismissal of the US cover art for Dragon Warrior. When DW came out, I got this box set with maps and tips. All the art gave this epic, classic fantasy feel. I loved it!
Me too. With the old English text it didn't feel like a game with Japanese roots but rather European.
I agree. I loved the dragon warrior art
I think they both have merit, I'm a sucker for Toriyama's artwork though. Personally I think it's great we can enjoy both Warrior and Quest for their own reasons, Japan doesn't really have that luxury.
Can't wait for James to do a "Chronologically Confused about Shin Megami Tensei".
That video would have to be like 3 hours long lol
i would LOVE that
@@johnlabonte5469 I am looking for the downside to that.
That video's gonna attract a lot of debates between main-series SMT and spin-off Persona.
I know persona is connected, but are the other SMT games connected too?
When you're 7 living in South Central LA back in the 90s? This game, this series was my escape. That is until the internet spread to the hood.
You start where any sane man would start and that would be Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime for the DS. Be brave. Be brave.
But where would that throw DQH 1+2 or do we count them as Hyrule Warriors
I still want to get the Dragon quest Monsters Joker games on DS, though at this point, probably $50 or more
in rocket slime you drive a tank that has the power to destroy the world.
@@rolandofeliciano6006 lol I think we just count them as Hyrule Warriors. 🖖
@Marcus Mysteriously Why thank you. Have you ever played Torneko: The Last Hope for the PSX? In an era where we were starved for DQ they gave us Torneko. Classic Enix. 🖖
I saw the title and thought "don't do this to yourself" then I thought, it's James, he can handle it
we believe in him! :D if anyone can handle it, he's the man!
Yea, but he just sounds so out of it. Maybe all the research took its toll on him.
It'd be a hard task, I'm sure he'll recover from it quickly
The real question is: “Where does Rocket Slime belong in the timeline?”
In the "best games ever" timeline
Man hearing him talk about timelines is really relaxing somehow. I wish he would make much more of this!
This is just VGN
''He's gonna take you back to the past
To play and talk about games''
That's it, that's the song now
A vegan!?
Dragon Quest 3, 8 and 11 S are my favorites . The 3DS port of 8 is a surprisingly well done adaptation of the PS2 game
I just want all the DQ games on my switch
You would probably like 2 better then 11, seeing as you like 3 and 8.
I'm so happy that James is finally doing anything in regards to one of my favorite series - I remember sending James emails to do a review of Dragon Warrior back in 2009 lol
I hadn't played a DQ game since the NES, but I recently bought the definitive edition of XI S and it is really great. They somehow managed to keep it classic in mechanics while feeling contemporary visually. It's really worth a play.
If you own a ps2 or a 3ds, I would recommend Dragon Quest 8 because I think most people consider it to be one of the best games in the series
I loved Dragon Warrior so much as a kid, it means so much to me. Glad to see Dragon Quest becoming more popular in the west now, I’m a lifelong fan. And I’m glad to see what James has been spending his newfound time on. Maybe try Suikoden next.👍
Or a Chronologically Confused on Castlevania
Im jealous of James's daughter imagine having this wholesome nerd as a dad. Love ya James
Which one? He has two.
Right I would have loved my parents playing video games with me growing up
Just when I become obsessed with the Dragon Quest franchise James puts out a video about it lol
Welcome to the questers!
Dragon Quest 3, 4, and 5 are three of my favorite games of all time. Really enjoyed this video!
cibemassacre : this is confusing.
Kingdom hearts : SWEATING PROFUSELY.
So glad I live in the timeline where we get another *_chronologically confused_* episode. Still one of my favorite cinemassacre series
Now he has to talk about Shin Megami Tensei and and the Persona series next
It was already bizarre enough hearing him mention the obscure "Dragon Quest Monsters Caravan Heart" now he'll talk about "Demikids", too?
That Toriyama art style is sick.
beacause of that i always thinking dragon quest and blue dragon is set in same universe😂
@@rezaqalam482 I treat Blue Dragon as an unofficial DQX, since we will never have X, and I won't play MMOs even if we did. I treat Lost Odyssey as the unofficial Final Fantasy XI for the same reason.
9:08 STTRONNNK Saiyan vibes here
@@justingates4985 interesting takes. blue dragon art was by Toriyama and Lost Odyssey by Sakaguchi.
@@justingates4985 FFXI is the best game ever made
Sounds like the bonus content in the remakes should be considered non-canonical to anyone who cares about fitting the timeline together.
Doesn't apply to 7, original or remake. One needed to get everything or they don't get to continue after defeating Orgodemir.
Forever end credits xD.
Or maybe the creators realized they wanted the games to be connected. So now any game here on is going to explain the timeline as eleven did. So the next game is further going to explain how the game works.
All I know is the warrior Ortega should be mentioned more.
"This unique anime art"
Me: Oh I *wonder* where that's going...
*never brings it up*
Me: "W-WHAT?!? AKIRA MF-ING TORIYAMA MY DUDE!!!"
MAN i kept on waiting and waiting and waiting and he never once mentioned it Huge opportunity missed.. We all know he's dragon ball but there are soo many more that james would know like chrono trigger and such.. very dissapointed
@@LaughingMan1337 Exactly. Haven't even played Chrono Trigger and I know AT's the lead artist behind that visually appealing game. James made a big time oof.
@@JJK10293
You should try it. One of the best jrpgs ever made
@@sufianramli8017 It's on my bucket list. I still need to decide what platform to play it on. Maybe after I go through all the DQ games tho.
@@JJK10293 my suggestion for Chrono Trigger is the DS version. It has the anime cutscenes from the PS version, a couple of extra side areas and quests, and another ending, which I won't spoil, but explains something that was cut from Chrono Cross.
Dragon Quest XI debuting on Xbox store/gamepass and Dragon Quest Tact releasing now was clearly a planned sales move and I don't even care. Loved this series and glad to see it back
I had never even considered the idea of a unified timeline for the Dragon Quest series outside the obvious two trilogies & XI acting as an origin for both. I think I still won't; the Zelda timeline theory hurts my head as it is.
I've never played a single one of these but it is still interesting hearing James explain everything.
"Every dragon quest has a remake" *cough cough* not 9... Please remake 9.
No you coughing it wrong it's: eh-huh eh-huh.

We need DQ9 on the Switch.
@@jaretco6423 I 100% agree
Are we getting a Renaissance of Cinemassacre? Every video in 2021 so far has been James, out of character, having fun, or discussing things that interest him. Videos like this are just as entertaining as classic AVGN because he’s so easy to listen to. He looks great, he sounds great- I don’t think James ever lost his spark. He’s just been wanting to make more content like this and didn’t get the chance for a while.
Never imagined james is gonna talk about dragon quest! I love the franchise. Got shirts, figurines, plushies, posters and ofc games since gbc!
I stumbled unto Dragon Warrior I because of a top 10 most influential RPGs of all time in a random website. I've been hooked since. As an european it can be tricky and expensive to get the games but they're well worth it.
I respect the fact that you want to buy original copies, and not just emulate
Just emulate them if they're so expensive...
5:18
Still haven’t let go of that whole “Rocky stopped numbering their movie titles” thing after all these years, have you?
It's a grudge both James and I will hold forever
There should be laws that prevent this sort of thing. It's even worse when a movie sequel has the same name as the original.
That Dragon Warrior I box art, mention in Nintendo Power, and feature in an episode of Captain N told my nine-year-old self that this game was a winner.
Thanks for putting this video together, James. Very much appreciate all the research and work you did trying to make sense of the Dragon Quest storyline. Now, I have to get some aspirin and lie down because... head hurts.🥴
I’ve missed these chronologically confused vids now we need a ykwbs maybe one about Valentine’s Day ?
That would be interesting
Break up Thanksgiving, come back or begin anew after Valentine's, save holiday expenses if you can be a bad enough dude. Not sure what's bs about Valentine's day other than retail making that seasonal candy right after new year's. I just wouldn't give to someone too entitled and wants every week to be Valentine's.
17:03, i made the image of the zenithian sword, its really cool you put it in the video! :)
Well made dude!
@komodoxeno on Twitter made this image
The DQ Monsters Series is in a big video from a big youtuber, never thought this day would come, even if it is just the logos
4:47 "...The Dragon Warrior art looks like it would be painted on the side of some badass van, but honestly, the Dragon Quest Box, has a unique look..." To be fair, I've seen BOTH painted on the side of badass vans.
Dragon Quest V is one of my all time favourites.
Very Nice, I'm glad to see another Dragon Quest Timeline.
There's a connection in DQ8 you missed: in the monster arena, you face Torneko and Ragnar from DQ4
Young Yangus lets you meet Torneko too. So IV and VIII are coeval.
imagine a chronologically confused on the mario timeline
Well Mario is timeless so......
Never expected this kind of vid, but super happy to see it! DQ is easily my fav JRPG series, played every numbered entry atleast 2 times(across originals and re-releases), excluding X of course.
Really well done!
Would love to see you make a similar vid about Ys. Another grandfather of Jrpg's not enough people know about.
Wait what he’s talking about dragon quest
Dark Cloud for the next video lol
Nice PFP homie
Never thought in my life I would see AVGN talk about Dragon Quest.
This is why I survived Covid
In loving memory of: Akira Toriyama(1955-2024)
The Creator of: Dragon Ball &
Character designer for Dragon Quest!
It was strange just having James talking like a normal person for a video. I could get used to it
There's a looooot of videos like this out there lol
Man I forgot how much I absolutely *_LOVE_* these Chronologically Confused videos.
Would like to see more of them interspersed with the AVGN vids going forward :D
He should do a Chronologically Confused on Castlevania
I love the series. Akira Toriyama is involved with some of the best JRPGs. Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon for example.
I still wish for a blue dragon revamp for new consoles. Like graphics compared to the new dragon quest
Blue Dragon is Underrated
@@Sneppyboi agreed. The 3DS spinoff wasnt enough for me. At least the XbOne upscaled the original and had lower load times.

When you talked about the artwork and character design on it, you should have mentioned it was all done by Akira Toriyama, and since Dragon Ball is the greatest anime ever, and it was really big in 1986, no wonder they decided to call him in to draw the artwork and the characters :D
ya lets not forget Dr. Slump, chrono Trigger and soooo much more.. really a huge blunder on Jaimes very disspointed
"Pick any and play it, they're all solid."
- James Rolfe on DQ series
Great throwback to an old series, James! I am an old Dragon Warrior fan and just generally leaving a comment for the algorithm not like you need it. I also think my pfp speaks for itself and my feeling of always wanting to leave silly/fun comments of encouragement. I wasn't expecting this and I'll type some more words. Dragon Warrior VII is one of my all time favorites though oh boy is that a long game. 100 hours can be spent on it easily (for just the main story).
I do remember one of the guys behind Dragon Warrior/Quest VII back then wanted to make it like Myst in ways (that old PC game).
The King of the Console RPG. I love the franchise and have covered some of the music from it. Koichi Sugiyama is a genius. Akira and Yuji Horii working together is awesome!
