iPhone is like a song in MP3 format, lower quality but a lot more convenient and versatile (and cheaper). Dedicated camera is like a CD or vinyl, much higher (sound) quality but requires setup and knowledge to operate properly in order to accentuate its full potential. For most of the people, MP3 is a better choice.
The Sony doesn’t always deliver better quality. Far from it. In many scenarios, it is worse. Besides, it’s possible to operate the Sony in fully automated manner mode
I had an a6000 and I struggled with this as phones improved, until finally, I’ve put the mirrorless on a shelf and I rely almost exclusively on my phone. Why? It’s always in my pocket, it always works, it’s always web connected, and it takes good photos and excellent video.
Yes, I understand what you mean. I am a huge fan of use whatever you have on you and in this case the iPhone 16 Pro works great. Although I do love my Sony a6700
Still quality wise the Iphone 16 pro is not at the same time of a mirrorless. I'm bringing with me a fuji xt30 and an Iphone 16 pro. The photo with the fuji are way better if you see it on a big screen.
@@bluenick4577 most of my photos and video are for social media. My UA-cam channel is quite active, though, and I find the video quality is outstanding. When I shoot video, I might use my iPhone, a GoPro, my Insta 360 or whatever else is at hand. It’s all about finding the right balance for the purpose.
It depends on if you are looking at images alone or the actual shooting experience. The grip, ease of changing white balance, shutter speed and aperture all outweigh what can be done on the phone. Swiping through all the settings on my phone to try and customize it is a pain. Taking all that time could also mean you lose the shot.
The real point is, does the viewer care... we always tent to only look through our eyes... but it is the viewer that matters... From that stance... Almost nobody will notice...
Watching your video made me wonder why aren’t camera companies taking advantage of computational photography??? It's literally one of the most underrated yet revolutionary technologies in imaging!! Right now, only smartphones are leveraging it incredibly well like the iPhone 16 Pro on your video, and while phone cameras use it just to overcome physical limitations, there’s no reason cameras couldn’t use it to go beyond physical boundaries and redefine what’s possible in photography and Videography. Specially for those $1.000+ prices and even without a kit lens... For example, imagine taking like a night portrait shot; And Instead of struggling with expensive wide-aperture lenses, waiting through long exposures, and begging your subject to stay impossibly still, computational photography could take multiple frames in milliseconds, stack them intelligently, and produce a stunning, well-lit image. And all of this would be done entirely onboard, without needing special tools or editing software on a PC. Some people argue that cameras don't need computational photography because they already have larger sensors and better optics. But this isn't about compensating for limitations; it's about unlocking entirely new possibilities and benefits. Computational photography on a camera could deliver noise reduction and correction far beyond what software like Lightroom can achieve. This is because it's not AI in the conventional sense but more of a pseudo-AI or "quack-AI" that leverages a specific profile containing precise measurements of the image sensor and lens. I mean, similar to how Lightroom has a Lens Corrections panel and a vast library of profiles for popular lenses, computational photography utilizes this information to create a detailed model of the entire imaging system. By mathematically predicting the sensor's response function, including its noise characteristics and color rendition, and accounting for lens aberrations like vignetting and distortion, it can correct imperfections with unprecedented accuracy, something that's impossible on an average Lightroom session... This goes beyond simple demosaicing and noise reduction, allowing for advanced techniques like super-resolution, computational bokeh, and even the recovery of lost details! Why settle for 13 to 16 stops of dynamic range when computational HDR could push that to over 30 stops in just one shot? Why limit ourselves to traditional depth of field when we could adjust it in post-processing using advanced image segmentation? The essential way we do Photography has barely evolved since its invention in 1816. The fundamentals remain the same, but computational photography could revolutionize the way we capture light and moments. I think it's time for camera manufacturers to stop clinging to tradition and start embracing the future. The potential is too exciting to ignore, SPECIALLY FOR THOSE PRICES 😭😭 (cries in couldn't afford an a7C II lol)
partly because "computational photography" needs an active internet connection to access the AI computer servers... It would need all cameras to allow a sim card to have 5g access.
@ Actually, computational photography isn’t internet based at all. It’s just a highly optimized algorithm powered by libraries and data that are already built into the device itself. These libraries include detailed information about the camera’s sensor, lens characteristics, and behavior, which allows the system to process and enhance images in real time without needing any connection to the internet. This kind of technology has existed for years, even before smartphones became so advanced. For example, digital cameras have been using onboard algorithms for tasks like auto white balance, face detection, and even noise reduction long before computational photography became mainstream. What sets computational photography apart is how much more sophisticated these algorithms have become capable of multi-frame processing, dynamic range expansion, and advanced noise correction, all happening locally on the device. So no, computational photography doesn’t rely on the internet to work. It’s just a self contained system designed to leverage the hardware and software of the device itself lol.
This is my first ever video of yours and I am 36 seconds into the video and can already tell you're going to be an amazing person to follow because you shared the files ❤ Not everyone thinks like that, keep it up 🙌 Okay now I am going to continue watching the video 😁
There is a huge bug in apple LOG when shooting with pro manual camera settings via Blackmagic app, the issue is that the white clipping point for Apple LOG is not constant for lower ISO values which shifts the histogram to left and crushes the shadow details and even make False Colour and Highlights Clipping Lights useless as at base 55 ISO the footage clips at about 60-70 IRE instead of 95 IRE which is there when using Auto ISO/Shutter speed setting or using Manual settings only above ISO 1250. This uneven white clipping point in LOG even affects the LUT and reduce the overall dynamic range of the sensor at base ISO of 55. Majority of sensor Analog gain is available only till ISO 400 as rest of it is just digital gain adding up which reduces the signal to noise ratio of image as you go higher. Seems Apple designed LOG only to be used in auto exposure mode via stock camera app with tons of Baked in Noise Reduction.
This was informative. I do see a lot of noise in that lower ISO range and deduced it was from the sensor size. But now that you mention it I see what you're saying. Great point and addition to the conversation. Appreciate it
I have a Sony A6400 and can't decide if I should change to an iphone 16 pro. In the last few years I have realized that I only take pictures with the iPhone.
I think it highly depends on what you are going to use the footage / photos for. If you are using them for phone screens and not for printing or bigger screens, the phone is fine, but as soon as you leave the small screen territory the difference is highly noticeable, not just in general quality but also in composition. I always use my A7 as prime and 15 Pro as backup cam, when I dont see a big benefit in shooting with a dedicated camera.
Actually I didn’t know the second shot is the Sony from the color science, but from the depth of field and blurred background. Only a camera with an f2.8 and above lense can produce that shallow depth of field because the lens is farther from the sensor than an iPhone.
Bro i have been looking for Iphone 16 pro raw footage so i can test it in my color grading scheme through my workflow before i bought it and you just saved my life, that you for providing footage that we can see for ourselves how it is in our own work flow, i repeat, THANK YOU! Subscriber earned!
Comparisons between picture A and picture B are always fun, and very easy to solve. If no additional clip-on lenses are used on iPhones, you can always see the missing boket very quickly.
@@thefilmalliance Of course. The edges are the key, especially for transitions between hair and backgrounds. Admittedly, this is complaining at a high level, but every serious filmmaker will agree. I'm not interested in making the iPhone cameras bad. But you have to distinguish between a good camera and a better camera. And: which camera is used for which purpose. Professional filmmakers should therefore reach for a "proper" camera. An iPhone can also be used well for B-roll recordings.
The coolest thing about it all is that we've gotten to a time where this kind of video is being made in all seriousness. It's not the Nokia N90, which itself was huge, had a longer camera than the Sony you compared. And yes, closing our eyes we then said “well wow already cell phones as can shoot, although if you open those videos now, it becomes funny, from the terrible quality.” And now in the phone, which is less than 1 cm thick, we get a video, which is not that not obviously worse, but you have to compare them side by side, to look at the subtleties and detail on the LARGE MONITORS))))) That's really cool! That said, the iPhone has a sharper picture due to its post-processing stuff. Personally, I do not like it, and everyone who likes the movie frame, but the fact itself! It's cool! I had such a thing that about 4 years ago my Fuji xt3 ran out of battery, and poverbank, as it turned out later, did not have powerdelivery and therefore did not help, but, at that time, already an old iPhone 6c plus helped to finish shooting frames, which I then perfectly combined on the editing, well processed. And so that a person who is not trained, the average person would not even notice the difference. And now on 15 pro max we have a thing that will complement the picture perfectly. Which can be combined at all without problems on the general editing.
Sensor size, lenses variety, dynamic range, color science ...etc matters the most. DSLR will always be superior, Software helping photo look better vs lenses help making it better or blurry background
This was very well done! I guessed correctly which was which, largely as the iPhone looks good, but a camera just a bit better. Frankly, I think the iPhone looks closer to real life whereas the camera looks perhaps more movie like. I find now that my iPhone is always with me (not as a camera…but it does get that role too..especially for quick photos), but for photos and video I I carry an action camera and a small camera (in my case a Sony Rx100vii) and I’m set. The Sony largely for its Zoom, the action for vlogging and poor weather and the iPhone for quick shots I might want to share easily. Everything takes up almost no room and so light. The reason I can see for a ‘proper’ camera these days is for the art side or for great zoom needs (wildlife is one example). If you really enjoy taking photos (or video) as a hobby, somewhat pixel peep or need it for artistic uses (e.g. wedding or other pro services) a camera and lenses are a great way to go. Otherwise a set up like mine (choose your own small camera of preference) is close to perfect, especially if you just post on social media. My ‘real’ mirrorless LUMIX camera rarely gets any use, unless for studio work..just too big when you add lenses. That said, for my use case I keep looking for another that is small (lenses too) and relatively light and the 6700 is on the list. Ideally a camera and maybe (?) two lenses for a total of 1.1kg or so.
That's awesome that you were able to identify the footage from each camera. I agree, the iPhone's color science a lot of times looks very true-to-life in program auto. It's super interesting to hear how you've got your camera setup dialed in for different situations. That's really the key, isn't it? Having the right tool for the job, and it sounds like you've figured that out. I'm always curious to see what Sony can do to pack amazing performance into a smaller body with the Sony a6700 compared to how Apple does it. Thanks for the comment
@@thefilmalliance I did! Sold an a7s3 and bit ago and am XT5. OP3 and iPhone 16 pro covers my needs for work as a teacher, and travel/personal. Never needing to fiddle with lenses and a large physical footprint makes me film more. Love the log !
Great explanation, great comparison, I love this channel and there is so much content and information sharing to watch, thank you, greetings from Mersin Türkiye
I just bought the 16 pro max. I have the lumix s5ii and I’m contemplating on selling my rig and just using the iPhone. The content that I make this is all I really need. Great video as always Joe
@CorentinHarbelot i do lawncare content and soon golf content. I feel for the lawn I can get away with the phone. Using my macro is nice for up close with the Lumix. The phones start to look like trash up close. But I could sell my gear and get a good amount back because it is relevant still. I do love the Lumix S5ii too though. Im torn. Do you make content
I have to admit, I didn't think that the Apple could shoot like a sony but I was kinda blown away at the side by sides. You can tell the apple in the violin shot just by the bokeh and depth of field. When you look at the edge of his face against the background, nice wisps of hair on the Sony, pure blurred edges on the Apple.
You can tell just from the focusing on the a6700. The iPhone is pretty solid though especially if you aren't looking to do cinematic style videography.
@@thefilmalliance That's the main issue I have with phone cameras and action cameras. The focusing gives that incredible high quality feel even though the resolutions may be the same. I just can't afford one yet lol.
I have sonyzve10 and iphone13. But as a regular person(not a photographer), I rarely carry the camera and almost always record with iphone. But in studio environment, I feel like camera is more convenient to use in a tripod and studio light.
This is a great point. Yes studio shots will require the dedicated camera like the Sony a6700 whereas everyday shooting the iPhone 16 Pro will do just fine.
Every video shoot I've had for the last 2 years has used an iphone and my Sony cam. Apple log makes it a tiny bit easier to match contrast between cams but you do have to err towards the iphones goofy color space.
I'd rather put Sony's Xperia 1 against a dedicated camera. iPhone and most other phones just give you the usual HDR overprocessed look and I think most people won't really want to shoot Log on a consumer device like a phone. Imagine being on vacation and you shoot, let's say, 200 videos of different length. Who wants to edit them all in post just to have more natural footage? I would rather go with Cinetone or natural creative style on the Xperia as a middle ground. Somehow Apple refuses to let you any choice about the outcome of your image.
Thank you for this excellent comparison video. It’s clear that a great deal of professionalism went into the production, and I really appreciate it. One suggestion would be to mention the equipment you used to record the video-it's likely not an iPhone! I did notice that one aspect seemed to be missing from the comparison: portrait shots. I recently transitioned from the Sony A6700 to the A7IV with a few lenses, but I found the setup way too cumbersome to travel with. As a result, I’ve been relying on my iPhone 16 Pro Max during an extended vacation in a beautiful location. Unfortunately, I regret not bringing an APS-C camera along. Whenever I use my Sony camera for portraits group shots or even birthday parties, I’m always impressed by how much better the shots turn out, and those I photograph are always impressed with the results. I don’t generally get the same satisfaction with the iPhone. I think the issue might be related to perspective distortion or correction, which wasn’t really mentioned in the video-unless I missed it. The amount of distortion in the iPhone’s lenses is crazy when compared to shots from a DSLR or mirrorless camera. While many people may not notice the facial and body distortion in phone photos, I find it quite noticeable, especially when comparing them to shots captured with a dedicated camera. Would you consider making another comparison video focused specifically on portraits, comparing the appearance of the model’s face and body in both cases? Thank you again for the insightful video. I’ve liked and subscribed to your channel, and I look forward to more content!
To be honest to say, when I want to take pictures, I choose to use my smart phone. When I want to shoot a video for my vlog, I choose to use a pro camera. My smart phone allows me to record precious moments at any time, but the pro camera gives me more fun. Although the video recording function of the smart phone is already very powerful and trustworthy nowadays, but most of the time in daily life, I think the professional camera will still have a better performance.
I'm an armature photographer. Or just a closet photographer wannabe but too lazy to go to a professional school. But I do use multiple cameras like Sony, Canon, Panasonic to take looooots pictures when I travel. One thing is most Europeans have more interactions and fun with me while I hold a camera in hand. They tend to jump into the frame or simply requested me to take their pix. While some people do photo bomb me while I use cellphone to take selfies. I love both cellphone and camera technology but as long as the subjects or the pix turns out to be the outcome I love, doesn't matter what tool/s I use. It even could be a paint brush.
My iPhone 16 Pro Max has officially replaced my mirrorless camera for 99.999% of my shooting needs. One because it is so convenient. Always with me. Easy to carry around & start shooting at a moments notice. Lugging around a heavy camera with a big lens cannot compete with that aspect of the iPhone. Are there compromises to be made when the iPhone is your main camera? Sure. But i have accepted & adapted to those for the unmatched convenience. Low light shooting is still a weak point, but other than that, I am more than happy shooting exclusively on an iphone. Plus lowlight performance will continue to get better as Apple increases the sensor size combined with advances in computational photography. Unless I am shooting wildlife photography like birds or sports, the iphone does everything I need in a camera. Using it for street & travel photography has been amazing. The new 48mp ultra wide has greatly improved my landscape photography as well.
There no right or wrong here. Me personally love taking photos with actual camera , the feel of it , the lens choices , off camera flash photography , sport photography etc…. I use phones for editing , web browsing , texting , social media & of course photography.. Both shoot great photos , but actual camera give better pleasure , its like driving a toyota corolla & gr corolla , both will bring you to your destination , but the latter gives you more joy.
After my last trip I was wondering if I should invest in a camera or upgrade my iPhone but choosing a camera is a lot like getting a PC over a Console or a Mac. It might give you more control and a better experience and all but you have to be very knowledgeable to make the best use out of it. Camera is probably not for a casual user like me but your video was really great.
Great comparison! As expected, the a6700 edged out the iPhone when pixel peeping. The average person is amazed at the quality of images coming from the iPhone. At this point, iPhone has proved itself in almost every category. They are even shooting a $75million feature film on iPhone. In my mind, when they make iPhone work with a flash trigger, it's game over!
What do you think of using iPhone as a pro camera for short films, music videos? I’m a director who wants to start filming by myself without DOP. Sure I mean low budget videos
for still pics like portrait and scenery, most smartphone cams would cover 80-90% of your needs and comparable to prosumer class dedicated digital cameras. newer iphones and higher android phone models can shoot in RAW a great way to start up your interest into image editing. to me, the cutting edge of dedicated cams over smartphone cams is the superior autofocus capabilities. it's more important for people getting into sports video/photography and vlogging. and with lens options, dedicated cams can do wildlife, smartphone cams are more limited at telephoto range.
Is Iphone also 4:2:2? or 4:2:0? And 2nd question please: Is Iphone in video mode changing automatically the shutter speed because there's no lenses aperture? If so then there's a big inconvenient for cinematic shoots, I'd like to keep the shutter at 1/48 or 1/50 like with my a6700 and adjusting aperture / iso as per shoot requiremenrts. many thanks for the videos :)
How does one correct color temperature on an iPhone? If we are out shopping and take a picture of upholstery or flooring the picture in the iPhone does not match the actual color of the subject?
Joe keep up the excellent work you have motivated me and educated me dramatically! I knew nothing about videography and now I am extremely comfortable navigating over the Sony platform being able to quickly make adjustments on the fly. I appreciate all your videos.
I really appreciate this feedback. Thanks for watching my videos. I’m happy you’re comfortable with your Sony. It’s my pleasure to make these videos for you all. Thanks again
thx for the vids man i actually got the 6700 as my ferst dslr from your vids reviewing them. keep it up i no it must take forever to put these vids out between getting the footage and the editing but their super helpful 🙏🏿🙏🏿
I have the iPhone 15 pro. It does take amazing photos. I’m really considering getting the a6700. Can’t decide on lenses. The Sigma 18-50/2.8 you recommended is $520. Yikes. Maybe I’ll just stick with my Sony Rx10 iv. It does great and no lenses to buy!
I know - that lens is expensive, but man the difference between that and the kit lens is substantial. So yes, I'd say stick with the RX10 iv for now until you save up for that Sony a6700 paired with a good lens. No need for you to pickup the iPhone 16 Pro
@@thefilmalliance thanks for the quick reply! I can swing that Sigma. The question is, do I want to. But, I’ll probably do it. I wasn’t sure about what lens to get. Do I need any primes too? I appreciate the info! New subscriber fan 😀
I'd say no on the primes for now. Not until you are using the Sony a6700 for an actual use case. The Sigma will take you 95% of the way for most stuff.
Pretty active content creator with iPhone since the 4s - iPhones are great, but they're not a replacement for dedicated cameras. I have both and use both - Different situations demand different tools.
A Dedicated camera is better with less limitations & compromises, & u have lens options. Having recently got into the Apple eco system the compromises are pretty damn annoying.
@@thefilmalliance always been a Filmic user on Android, but I don't like unnecessary subscriptions so maybe I'll try something else However getting into the Apple ecosystem was more bcoz of the M1 Max MacBook Pro & less bcoz of IPhone, Main camera is a Sony Zv E10
I know you always compare iPhones to real cameras since the iPhone has historically had the best video capabilities on the smartphone market, but this years Google Pixel 9 Pro shows some really impressive results when using the Video Boost feature which uses AI to enhance the video. I cannot stress this enough, the video out of the Pixel is amazing. Maybe you should include it next time you do a smartphone vs real camera comparison video.
A very interesting video. I have the A6400 and have taken it with me together with the iPhone and as you say, it’s a pain because you’ve got a heavy bag. However, the A6400 does give a crisper more controllable image but one of the other issues that you do not mention is the availability of HDR. By default, the iPhone shoots in HDR. The A6400 does return a DNG and a jpeg, but the DNG is the best but can only realistically be extracted using Lightroom. I use the mobile version to import my A6400 photos and edit them into HDR output where they❤ look superb. For obvious reasons, this effort is only worth putting in to your really favourite photos. The iPhone however, does give you a relatively simple editor that preserves HDR but also allows you to import their file into Lightroom to further tweak it if necessary, so great photos are tempting out of the iPhone box. Horses for courses.
I'm a little happy to recognize what's being shot by what. Still, the iphone wins outright. it's for the reason that the best camera is the one you have right on you. What do you need a Sony a9 or 6700 for at home when you're out and about? While your phone is still with you. But I'm glad to see by the video that the bigger chip and better optics still wins :) But it is clear that the vast majority of people will be perfectly happy with the result from the iphone .
You're right, Martin. Most people don't know how to make their mirrorless cameras look better than an iPhone 16 Pro shot, so if someone is in that category, then the iPhone 16 Pro wins. If, however, you want a more pro look with more controls, then the Sony a6700 is the winner. Thanks
seeing this vid recommended to me is funny because i just got the 16 pro, and have been using the 6700 for the past year 😆 so the answer to the title for me is "yes"
My local camera store was having a promotion combo this past weekend that brought the A6700 drto $1,050 for the body only. I had to leave the store before I walked out with it, to keep the G.A.S. at bay.
Personally, the A6700 and iPhone 16 is not exactly a fair comparison. Maybe iPhone 16 and Sony RX100-7(20MP) or a RX100-5a if you are on a budget? I carry my RX100-7 with me when I don't want to carry my A6700. A6700 has so many whiz-bang features that I am just barely scratching the surface.
Thanks for always providing log footage for us to use, I always enjoy working with your files especially on mobile videography. Be it Samsung or iPhone they always come out great just like the last one I did with the vintage cars. I'm looking to work on more of your mobile footage to see how much I can push the colour grading to it limit or close 😂. Thanks Brother 👐🏾
Good comparison but also will be good to see how it compares against Canon R7 (APSC) and similar Nikon cameras. Sony is just one of the manufacturers making mirrorless cameras.
Thats actually a very common question I get. I understand because I was in your shoes at one point in my camera journey. To help people find the perfect camera, I created a ‘Which Camera Should I Buy?’ course and a free quiz. They might be helpful resources for you as you weigh your options.
Amazing video, man. I know nothing when it comes to camera, but I do know editing when it comes to my phone because I always participate in video contests in my country. I was always in the top 3 until this year when I was constantly in the 4th place. I realized that I was inferior to the camera user and decided to level up my gears and skills. Should I buy a good camera for videography or today’s phones be sufficient enough?
Simple. If u have enough lighting gears, time n patients to process the video, or some dedication to the shoot, go for A6700. If u want a very good quality video out of the device, go for iPhone. NB: iPhone 16 pro and Sony A6700 have almost similar price in India... 😁
if you want real film and photo depth then go for the camera.. but if you want point and shoot convenience then get the phone. A phone cannot replace the quality of a dedicated camera since the very physical big lens cannot be replaced by softwares no matter what. We also have mechanical keyboards which cannot be replace by some software features. A real world physical object will never ever be replaced by sofwares. It is just like you expect dating apps to give you the realistic feeling of having a real girl friend.
Very disappointed with the colour grading and quality you have extracted out of A6700. It’s so much better than that. Still indoors the difference was visible.
Great video. Thankyou. Just discovered your channel. Question if you have time to respond..For someone shooting youtube music educational content, ( as opposed to documentary poutdoors stuff..) and I am mainly working from home- using basic lighting rig/ ring lights...Is the 16 a huge upgrade from older gen iphones for video? I had tried a Canon mirrorless but found the audio set up really bad, and complex to get a good microphone etc
Hello @Rufusbass, As a professional who records in the studio regularly, I can tell you that sound quality is crucial. Even with amazing video, poor audio can ruin the experience-like putting a V6 in a Lamborghini. 😳 The new iPhones are great for video, but I highly recommend using an external microphone for crisp audio quality. Hope this helps! 😊
@@LovieH Yeah-=I do already- with an audio interface -(Focusrite) I am also curious if there is going to be a substantial difference in quality between a 15 PRO and 16 for video IF it's used for filming in a lit, static environment ( home studio) There seemed to be many negative customer review regarding 15-overheating, battery life etc.
Could you possibly add in the future a comparison between Sony A 6700 and A7 C ii? I currently own the A 6300 and 6400 and I’m still trying to decide how better can the A7C ii be in dynamic range. I understand the full frame wins, I just wish to know if it’s worth spending more as if I buy the 6700 I only pay for the body (I already have 3 stabilized lenses), whereas with the A7C ii, I will also have to buy a new lens. I’m mostly interested in low-light scenarios, as I don’t suppose the difference will be great during the day. Finally, since I shoot HLG, so far I can’t perfectly match the color science of the Pocket 3 in HLG with the one of Sony A 6400 in HLG, so I would like to see such a comparison too.
@thefilmalliance No, I did not know that as I'm relatively new here. Thanks for the link. I will watch it in full. Please allow me to make a suggestion: In any future comparison, could you include a full quality LOG file from the iPhone, not this smaller file size? I finally ordered iPhone Pro 256 today, but I still would like to see in the future how a full LOG quality compares to another camera. In general, thank you for providing this option, to download the original files. It helps a lot those of us who want to evaluate files in our editing suite.
Huge difference between the a6700 and the iPhone. But what else did we expect. For people who don't want to buy a dedicated camera but like photography, the Sony Xperia 1vi also takes amazing pictures, also better than iPhone in general.
great video comparison what lens would you recommend with 6700 for street fashion photography and videography ? i am not a pro guy so just want to enjoy my own work :) thats why dont want to break the bank with lenses that are 600$ and above i am bit confused bw 6700 and a7iii or a7C as the other 2 are FF but then 6700 is the lastest one (2023) with better video recording. I want a lens for 6700 that is similar to 85mm 1.8 on a FF Sony a7 iii , a7iv , a7Cii all FF alpha series I mean .. pls recommend one or two . thanks for reading long comment :D
I know what your saying. So many choices - Every lens has its different use for different applications. Have you tried taking my lens quiz? This may get you in the right direction. Tell me what lens you land on.
The iPhone’s new Audio Mix feature is a MAJOR factor to consider when it comes to vlogging. It’s one reason I just sold my Canon PowerShot V10 vlogging camera. The other being stabilization. The iPhone is very stable now WITHOUT Action Mode on. Perfect for vlogging walk and talks. Who needs to see the screen? SUBSCRIBED
It might be equal if you are filming but If you take photography seriously the gap to iPhone is big. Lowlight, Milkyway, real macro, big prints, landscape in most cases the iPhone can't compete for rea.l
Hey Joh, all true. Both cameras are for different use cases. The iPhone 16 Pro is my everyday carry and the Sony a6700 is my specific needs camera. Which was your favorite?
@@thefilmalliance No, I just went from android to apple for the first time. However I am surprised android phones are often ignored despite their huge leaps forward to compete with the iphone.
can't believe people are still confused about this or even having a hard time to decide. obviously what's better or right for you is based on use case scenario. no way in hell people would pick a phone camera for video/photo purposes only. if you have to pick one and does not have a phone that can't handle your day to day task. then go for the phone. if your phone is working fine for what's intended to be based on your lifestyle, go for the dedicated camera.... this is like, should I pick a Ferrari for my commute to work or Toyota Corolla?
This is so true. It’s hard to even compare this as they are on a completely different playing field. I understand the iPhone cameras are improving as I have the iPhone 16 pro but it honestly doesn’t even compare to the capabilities of the a6700, the only way it is better is portability and convenience.
Hey great video thanks mate. I've got an older phone but also hate how attached I am to my smart phone these days, was considering getting a portable mid-spec mirrorless to capture some great casual family pics without having to get the latest iPhone.
Thanks, I dont know about that. You may want to buy a good mirrorless like the Sony a6700 and a good lens I would say. I understand because I was in your shoes at one point in my camera journey. To help you guys find the perfect camera, I created a 'Which Camera Should I Buy?' course, and a also free quiz. They might be helpful resources for you as you weigh out your options.
Thanks for all of the support. Please tell everyone here, what camera you own or plan on purchasing. Also did you like the iPhone 16 Pro or Sony a6700 better?
What cameras would you like me to compare next?
Sony ZV-E1 vs FX 3
Zve10 ii and fuji xm5
Sony A7C vs A6700
ZV E10 ii vs iphone 16 Pro max

iPhone is like a song in MP3 format, lower quality but a lot more convenient and versatile (and cheaper). Dedicated camera is like a CD or vinyl, much higher (sound) quality but requires setup and knowledge to operate properly in order to accentuate its full potential. For most of the people, MP3 is a better choice.
Wow, superb breakdown. Thanks Tony
@@thefilmalliance you are welcome. Sorry about the grammar as I was typing while running on a treadmill 😅😅. Love your work! Subscribed!
Thanks Tony, good for you!
Exactly. I think iPhone is more than enough nowadays.
You probably don't care about quality so iphone is right for you then
@@bluenick4577 most of my photos and video are for social media. My UA-cam channel is quite active, though, and I find the video quality is outstanding. When I shoot video, I might use my iPhone, a GoPro, my Insta 360 or whatever else is at hand. It’s all about finding the right balance for the purpose.
Thank you for talking in a slower pace and for explaining things with simplicity. Great video comparison. Good job!
Of course a6700 is better but the point is how much better or to what point iphone still usable specially when light get dimmer. Subscribed
Yes that low light is where the iPhone 16 Pro starts to fall apart and the Sony a6700 shines
The bokeh on the 16 pro is so obviously using an algorithm. It's not organic looking. It's artificial looking. abd bad
Welcome aboard and thanks for letting me know. Please tell me if you like the Sony a6700 or the iPhone 16 Pro better
It’s my pleasure, enjoy. I have a bunch of downloads from the iPhone 16 Pro from different videos as well. Your free to use all of them
@@thefilmalliance Thank you, they're also in apple log right? not only standard? (i haven't gone to the website yet that is why i am asking)
Yes both, standard and apple log
Comparisons between picture A and picture B are always fun, and very easy to solve. If no additional clip-on lenses are used on iPhones, you can always see the missing boket very quickly.
Yes, thanks for that. Could you tell a difference when I used cinematic mode?
@@thefilmalliance Of course. The edges are the key, especially for transitions between hair and backgrounds. Admittedly, this is complaining at a high level, but every serious filmmaker will agree. I'm not interested in making the iPhone cameras bad. But you have to distinguish between a good camera and a better camera. And: which camera is used for which purpose. Professional filmmakers should therefore reach for a "proper" camera. An iPhone can also be used well for B-roll recordings.
Good eye my friend. Thanks for the explanation
Which can be combined at all without problems on the general editing.
sorry to be that guy but do you mean iphone 6s, and iphone 16 pro max?
@ 6s plus
Sensor size, lenses variety, dynamic range, color science ...etc matters the most.
DSLR will always be superior,
Software helping photo look better vs lenses help making it better or blurry background
That is very true, you have to decide what is most important to you. Do you own the Sony a6700 ?
Always top notch! There is nothing holding someone back from making excellent YT videos using the iPhone 16. It’s preference and $$$
Hi Jay, can't agree more. Thanks for your input. Did you buy the iPhone 16 Pro?
@@thefilmalliance I did! Sold an a7s3 and bit ago and am XT5. OP3 and iPhone 16 pro covers my needs for work as a teacher, and travel/personal. Never needing to fiddle with lenses and a large physical footprint makes me film more. Love the log !

I have to admit, I didn't think that the Apple could shoot like a sony but I was kinda blown away at the side by sides. You can tell the apple in the violin shot just by the bokeh and depth of field. When you look at the edge of his face against the background, nice wisps of hair on the Sony, pure blurred edges on the Apple.
iPhone 16 is really great, and good enough for most situations for most people!
Can’t agree more. Did you pickup the iPhone 16 Pro ?
You can tell just from the focusing on the a6700. The iPhone is pretty solid though especially if you aren't looking to do cinematic style videography.
I'm glad you pointed that out. The a6700's autofocus is pretty amazing.

Yes studio shots will require the dedicated camera like the Sony a6700 whereas everyday shooting the iPhone 16 Pro will do just fine.
how much different is the photo/video quality of an iPhone from a sony camera?
It depends on the lighting environment
Every video shoot I've had for the last 2 years has used an iphone and my Sony cam. Apple log makes it a tiny bit easier to match contrast between cams but you do have to err towards the iphones goofy color space.
Thank for your information ❤❤❤😊
You're welcome! Did you end up going with the iPhone or the Sony a6700
I'd rather put Sony's Xperia 1 against a dedicated camera. iPhone and most other phones just give you the usual HDR overprocessed look and I think most people won't really want to shoot Log on a consumer device like a phone.
Yes but the appl log footage out of the iPhone 16 Pro is really good. Have you ever used it?
i have the sony A6700 and i can say that is perfet, i love it
Hey David, Yes I really enjoy mine.
The colours and lighting on the a6700 is superior - but then it’s cost around 2k for the body and a good lens
Great comparison review! Thank you!
Get a camera cage and som lenses for the iPhone to make it a fair comparison.
But that only increases the form factor. We need to see the image quality
Several of these shots looked REALLY familiar, and then I finally recognized the church/theater in downtown Franklin! Howdy neighbor!
Hi Regan, I know what you mean. I've also noticed a huge difference between the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro in terms of image quality.
Great video.
Why does the sky look completely white on Sony? In every comparison, I see this.
Personally I prefer the camera, you can play with the real depth of field, it also seems to me a better image quality
I agree, more control for a better image
There no right or wrong here.
Me personally love taking photos with actual camera , the feel of it , the lens choices , off camera flash photography , sport photography etc….
I use phones for editing , web browsing , texting , social media & of course photography..
Both shoot great photos , but actual camera give better pleasure , its like driving a toyota corolla & gr corolla , both will bring you to your destination , but the latter gives you more joy.
Really thanks for the video!!
Thanks, Kaz, I guess it depends. Are you doing this full-time or as a hobby? Full time = Sony a6700 hobby = iPhone 16 Pro
Great comparison! As expected, the a6700 edged out the iPhone when pixel peeping. The average person is amazed at the quality of images
coming from the iPhone. At this point, iPhone has proved itself in almost every category. They are even shooting a $75million feature film on iPhone.
In my mind, when they make iPhone work with a flash trigger, it's game over!
Oh wow, really? I didn’t know that. Thats crazy
For the iPhone, once you get a rig body you can attach so many other stuffs
That’s a great point. Do you have the Sony a6700 ?
Is Iphone also 4:2:2? or 4:2:0?
And 2nd question please:
Is Iphone in video mode changing automatically the shutter speed because there's no lenses aperture?
If so then there's a big inconvenient for cinematic shoots, I'd like to keep the shutter at 1/48 or 1/50 like with my a6700 and adjusting aperture / iso as per shoot requiremenrts.
many thanks for the videos :)
How does one correct color temperature on an iPhone? If we are out shopping and take a picture of upholstery or flooring the picture in the iPhone does not match the actual color of the subject?

I have the iPhone 15 pro. It does take amazing photos. I’m really considering getting the a6700. Can’t decide on lenses. The Sigma 18-50/2.8 you recommended is $520. Yikes. Maybe I’ll just stick with my Sony Rx10 iv. It does great and no lenses to buy!
I know - that lens is expensive, but man the difference between that and the kit lens is substantial. So yes, I'd say stick with the RX10 iv for now until you save up for that Sony a6700 paired with a good lens. No need for you to pickup the iPhone 16 Pro

Ok cool. Also I’ve heard great things about the google pixel 9. So many choices!

Thanks for your insight. Will you be upgrading your a6400 with the a6700?

Thanks

Personally, the A6700 and iPhone 16 is not exactly a fair comparison. Maybe iPhone 16 and Sony RX100-7(20MP) or a RX100-5a if you are on a budget? I carry my RX100-7 with me when I don't want to carry my A6700. A6700 has so many whiz-bang features that I am just barely scratching the surface.
what about if you purchased a used Sony a6700 ?
I dont do client work but I just photography and videography just for fun isn't the 16 a good choice or I still have to buy a camera
The iPhone 16 Pro a great phone and you can get away with it for a long time. I’d say yes
My pleasure bro
@@thefilmalliance I don't mind a shout out from you bro as I am trying to growing too thanks.
Good comparison but also will be good to see how it compares against Canon R7 (APSC) and similar Nikon cameras. Sony is just one of the manufacturers making mirrorless cameras.
I like that point. Yes that would be a good comparison
Great comparison. We have to keep in mind that we are comparing a phone with a camera. 😂
Very true
Which is the best outdoor cooking video shoot camera and lens bro budget 200k.. please pick my comment bro.!
Like Ur Videos Keep Them Coming 📸
Simple. If u have enough lighting gears, time n patients to process the video, or some dedication to the shoot, go for A6700. If u want a very good quality video out of the device, go for iPhone.
NB: iPhone 16 pro and Sony A6700 have almost similar price in India... 😁
Thanks for that. Really almost the same price? thats amazing. So I think the first question we have to ask is, what are you primarily shooting?
Shocking how close smartphone cameras have come to dedicated cameras.
I know, its a game changer!
if you want real film and photo depth then go for the camera.. but if you want point and shoot convenience then get the phone.
Please explain what you mean. I was matching color science to show it’s possible to have an a-can b-cam setup
Hello @Rufusbass,
As a professional who records in the studio regularly, I can tell you that sound quality is crucial. Even with amazing video, poor audio can ruin the experience-like putting a V6 in a Lamborghini. 😳
The new iPhones are great for video, but I highly recommend using an external microphone for crisp audio quality.
Thats a great idea although I already did that one. Have you searched for it on my channel? ua-cam.com/video/0H3j33_CcuQ/v-deo.htmlsi=JRDNbt6iDyRaLZBL
It helps a lot those of us who want to evaluate files in our editing suite.
i really love your content keep it up
Thank you, much appreciated
Huge difference between the a6700 and the iPhone. But what else did we expect.
For people who don't want to buy a dedicated camera but like photography, the Sony Xperia 1vi also takes amazing pictures, also better than iPhone in general.
Thanks, I have to test those out. Between the iPhone 16 Pro and the Sony a6700, it would depend on what I’m doing content creation wise
great video comparison
what lens would you recommend with 6700 for street fashion photography and videography ? i am not a pro guy so just want to enjoy my own work :)
thats why dont want to break the bank with lenses that are 600$ and above
i am bit confused bw 6700 and a7iii or a7C as the other 2 are FF but then 6700 is the lastest one (2023) with better video recording.
My iPhone does weird sharpening on my skin in photos , also no flip out screen so it’s a nightmare to film yourself. I gave up and bought an S9.
I know what you mean. I wish we could shoot photos in raw with the iPhone 16 Pro
SUBSCRIBED
Hi Blair, thank you. Yes, that's a valid point. I agree with you. the iPhone 16 Pro is pretty amazing
Do you have any plans to do the same comparison with Sony ZV-E10 II or it's the same as with iPhone 15 pro you did already?
I already shot a ZV-E10 II vs the iPhone 16 Pro video. It's currently being edited and scheduled to come out in about 1 month.
@@thefilmalliance I´m using the A6400 but I´m planing to upgrade to the A6700 soon.
I love the a6400s color science. But I must admit that the Sony a6700 has a lot better functionality. Hey maybe you could keep your a 6400 as a b-cam.
@@thefilmalliance No, one camera is enough for me and I can only justify the buy of the A6700 only with the sell of the A6400.
Okay, I hear you. Don’t forget a good lens!
Great video as every time 👍🏼
Thank you. Which one did you like better? the iPhone 16 Pro or Sony a6700 ?
How does this stack up against a Samsung s24 ultra or new Pixel 9 xl?
Thats a really good question, DO you own the S24 or pixel 9 xl?
@@thefilmalliance No, I just went from android to apple for the first time. However I am surprised android phones are often ignored despite their huge leaps forward to compete with the iphone.
Yes, I know I’ll have to rent one. Thanks for the good point
dedicated camera will alwas be better but it depends on your use case
What about beginners? I recommend the iPhone 16 Pro
iphone 16 Pro/Max or Canon R8 for city/landscape photography?God chanel love it 💙
Will do. Have you ever shot with the iPhone 16 Pro or the Sony a6700 ?
can't believe people are still confused about this or even having a hard time to decide. obviously what's better or right for you is based on use case scenario. no way in hell people would pick a phone camera for video/photo purposes only. if you have to pick one and does not have a phone that can't handle your day to day task. then go for the phone. if your phone is working fine for what's intended to be based on your lifestyle, go for the dedicated camera.... this is like, should I pick a Ferrari for my commute to work or Toyota Corolla?
This is so true. It’s hard to even compare this as they are on a completely different playing field. I understand the iPhone cameras are improving as I have the iPhone 16 pro but it honestly doesn’t even compare to the capabilities of the a6700, the only way it is better is portability and convenience.
Both cameras are for different people and different uses. I use both in differnt situations
I love proper tech reviews and comparisons. I feel like I should leave this positive comment just in case it fixes your day ;))
Fixed, thank you
Hey great video thanks mate.
Can you please drop some video of some post processing?? Would love to see how you clean up the vids and take it to the next level? plus FX …. 🙏🏼
Yes will have to.
Thanks, please do this kind of comparison with Xperia 5V or 1V using inbuilt camera apps
Alright, I'll have to do that. Can you rent either of those phones/cameras? Also, would you like me to verse it against the Sony a6700?
I see it directly on the software stylisch blurry background
You mean the fake digital blur?
one of the best videos ever
Thanks for all of the support. Please tell everyone here, what camera you own or plan on purchasing. Also did you like the iPhone 16 Pro or Sony a6700 better?
@@thefilmalliance I want to buy the a6700 .
Now I have canon 800d
Can you sell the Canon and buy a used Sony a6700?
Waiting for a Apple full frame camera 😊
Do a review on iPhone 16 and fx3 next
Do you own either?
