I moved from an A6400 I used for over 2 years to an A7IV 3 months ago. No regrets about my decision so far, massive upgrade moving from an APSC to a full-frame camera for both photography and videography.

For me Sigma 18-50 is the reason I stayed with APSC. Absolutely nothing can beat its size/weight-performance-price ratio. Sony 18-135 is pretty close tho, you can buy it VERY cheap used.

One thing that I like about the A6700 is the placement of the video on/off control button. The side loading of the memory card is damn nice too. No longer having to remove the camera from a tripod to change the memory card like I do in the A6600. The lack of dual cards is no problem for me since, I don't shoot commercially. I have decided to stick with crop sensor only since the A6600 has given me wonderful results.
The new 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens also looks interesting - especially the ability to use a TC. I had a TC when I shot with my Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and it was a very handy light weight addition to my travel kit for times that I needed just a bit longer reach!

Upgraded to an a6700 and the heat makes it shuts down after 11 minutes of 4k24p. There is an aftermarket fan available, but I am using my a6700 for stills and 1080p which does NOT cause the camera to overheat. Recorded a 1080p video for one hour...could have kept going.
I have an a6400 too, and I do NOT at all like how the a6700 back LCD screen articulates. It ends up stuck out to the left whereas the a6400 can tilt up or down from the back of the camera. Making it easy to use the camera at waist height or overhead. It is a kludge to quickly get the LCD out and into position.
Two card slots is NOT an issue for me. I have NEVER had a memory card fail; just don't use cheap cards!
One BIG item you did not mention is the a6700 does focus bracketing; images are then processed on a PC for stacking. One reason I picked the a6700 is it is one of the first Sony cameras with focus bracketing for image stacking. Note the Sony A7RIV does NOT have focus bracketing but the new A7RV does as does the a6700/
Additionally, the 26MP APSC sensor of the a6700 is actually SHARPER, when used for extreme macro photography, than the A7 because the pixels are closer together. I use an 1990s Canon bellows and Metabones FD to e-mount adapter with a 10x microscope objective for extreme macro photography.

Size matters. Once you start adding lenses there’s a big difference with the ASCP weight. Sure if you’re a pro, the HDMI and 2 card slots maybe essential, and that’s why you pay an extra $1000. But if you like travel, are not pro, or like a backup camera, good choice.

I really wish Sony would make a full-sized body crop sensor camera geared toward professionals with dual card slots and the bigger EVF and such. Basically, an A7IV with a crop sensor. I think I'd switch to the crop sensor in that scenario just to save some money on lenses. Full frame is great and all, but there are a lot of benefits to the crop sensor format as well.

Thanks for such a nice review. I have an a6500 and the a6700 seems to tick off all of the things that I wanted to improve. I did wonder how the HD performance was. The a6500 has very sharp 4K but the HD is pretty mediocre.
When the A7IV came out, I jumped on that since it solved everything I was concerned about with the a6500. The crop mode on the A7IV improves the rolling shutter quite a bit and it still has decent 4K and HD. That makes it a really good crop alternative. It works quite well with my old 18-200 APSC power zoom. This is a slow and not a very sharp lens but it's still great for run and gun video. I'm still super happy with the A7IV since it has many advantages being FF. For me, the a6700 ticked off what I wanted to improve on the A6500/ a6600 but did not make me sorry I got the A7IV.

Do not buy any sony camera if you want good 1080p. They dont oversample from 4k or even 6k. It's lineskippee 1080p. The worst version of 1080p you can possibly get. I'd even argue that it's not even true 1080p.
The reason why the 4k has always looked exceptionally sharp on the a6000 series was because of the oversampled image. From 6k sensor readout to a final 4k image. 18MP image squeezed into a 8mp one.

I mostly use the camera for travel as I enjoy making videos for my UA-cam Channel. I find that the camera and the 24-105 lens is way to heavy to lug around the world. Unfortunately, I find myself using the GoPro or iphone instead in situations where I just don't want to deal with the weight. I am still learning to master the A7iv and the video editing process. I find it to be an incredible hobby in my retirement as I enjoy capturing our travels. The A6700 interests me due to the lighter weight capabilities which would make it easier to travel with. My question is, would it be crazy of me to sell or trade my A7iv and 24-105 lens and get a lighter A6700 with a nicely paired travel lens?

While the a6700 is great in several aspects, it still doesn’t feel “premium” with the lack of second card slot, low quality EVF and LCD, lackluster stabilization in video, max shutter speed of 1/4000 (essentially restricting daytime shooting at no less than f1.8) and the heating issues in 4k 60. We might see something in the future that is “more” premium, addresses these issues and sets the standard for APSC shooting.

Thanks for this very helpful video👍👍 ...
Q1. Can we make digital zoom on sony a6700 at 120fps or at 240fps for FHD or 4k for batter wildlife telephoto reach to shoot slow-mo? (Any of these combination, after turn on digital zoom in settings)
Q2. Can you confirm If we set photo shoot resolution to a lower megapixel resolution from the highest resolution settings available, dose it downsample from the full sensor or it's just skip pixels to make a lower resolution photo?

Autocropping mocd - I have seen a few demo videos of this on the 6700 and ZV-E1 and it looks sloppy. Motion blur noise added when in motion, to the cropped-in face of the subject. It's a gimmick at best and you're going to be much better off framing wider and editing the movement in in editing. Retain the full sensor resolution and choose in post.

I have an a6700 and now it accompanied me on a trip to Jordan. Great, small, inconspicuous, excellent AF. I have it as and add-on to FF, but I use it almost every day on my travels and trips. Yes, the new a7cii is an option but at a much higher price. The a6700 also has better video. Lenses are important, I use 1.4 or 1.8, for traveling a 2.8 zoom is great, even from third parties such as sigma or tamron.

I recommend more text & titles for clarity … (now that the recording is complete.) When you say “this one” it’s not clear which camera you are holding. In some cases, the camera is off screen, which just makes it worse. Ouch, my brain.

If all I did was video and some casual photo shooting on the side, then I’d get the A6700. But since I also do commercial photo work, the full frame A7IV is crucial.

    Hi! nice review✅🍿.
I have the a6700 and I can't record in 4K 100p. The camera gives me a message saying that to record at these speeds I need cards higher than v60. I have Sony Tough v90 300mb/s cards.
    Any help with this?

  • @sandboxaperture7013

I think if I didnt already own theA7IV, and I was trying to decide between these 2 cameras, I could convince myself to save money and buy the A6700. However, after coming from the A6400 and moving up to the A7IV, there are things about my full frame A7IV that I would really miss if I didnt have it, better dynamic range, dual card slot etc. Still loving my A7IV, but I wouldnt judge anyone for picking up the A6700 over the A7IV, the value is impressive, about a 1000 dollar difference you could use towards another lens. ..and 4.2.2 10 bit on the Sony APSC line! I used to dream about this camera. Whoever buys this I'm sure will love it.

    • @sandboxaperture7013
      @sandboxaperture7013 Рік тому +1

@CavenInToTheWorld I don't think you can go wrong. It's pretty much a classic full frame vs apsc debate at this point, tho, the A7IV does have a slightly higher mp sensor, so perhaps that's something worth remembering as well if you're someone who crops in a lot in post. Some tradeoffs either way, but both great cameras. As mentioned in the video tho, the A6700 is probably the better value from strictly a financial standpoint.

did you have aps-c lenses? and how did it differ when you went to FF body, or did you start getting FF lenses

    • @sandboxaperture7013
      @sandboxaperture7013 Рік тому +1

@Maiden1357 I had both apsc and full frame lenses when I had my A6400. But now that I have full frame, I exclusively have full frame lenses. The full frame lens selection is way more vast than the apsc lineup. I don't like using full frame on apsc too much as they arnt really optically optimized for apsc. For the reasons I listed above, ie., dynamic range etc, I simply prefer full frame at this point. But you could use this new apsc camera with one of the few top tier apsc lenses (56mm sigma) and you would be hard pressed to see a noticeable difference, without some serious side by side pixel peeping, when comparing to a full frame equivalent.

Can someone explain to me why so many people still say that full-frame is "better" for professionals ? Literally the only big difference between these two cameras is the sensor size (and thus the DoF) and maybe the single card slots (however there's a bunch of professionals that only use one card at a time anyways)

I've now set aside the money for the A6700 but have two dilemmas. Nr.1 - does it support the Auto Framing even when connected with HDMI - like during the livestream? This is very important for my (guitar playing/teaching) scenarios. Nr.2 - the veeeery significant rumours that Sony is going to upgrade the A7C to mark2 and give it everything A6700 has - but on the full frame. It's also been speculated that the new A7CII will come with 33MP sensor. Hope they don't just move the A7IV sensor into this...

I've been watching many of your videos and I wonder what's the big deal with rolling shutter speed anyway ?
how come whipping the camera with fast rolling shutter is any way better than with a slower rolling shutter ? to me it seems like unusable blurry mess either way except if you are filming sports or something and even then its questionable , like if you have a multicam setup I don't think any director will choose the whipping camera angle .. and for solo shooter that's just unusable footage anyway unless its for filming inside cars or for drones maybe?
    not sure.
and the whole fast rolling shutter is one of fx3\6 main selling points along with the high dynamic range.
but I'm thinking that perhaps megapixel count and resolution is better and provides more options for post production even without the best rolling shutter speed.

Whether a full frame or an APS-C lens is being used, there is no difference in the "reach" or field of vision. The field of view for a 100mm full frame and 100mm aps-c lens is the same. So no, full frame lenses don't have an "additional" x1.5 crop on that camera. It's just x1.5 for any lens.
