One thing that I like about the A6700 is the placement of the video on/off control button. The side loading of the memory card is damn nice too. No longer having to remove the camera from a tripod to change the memory card like I do in the A6600. The lack of dual cards is no problem for me since, I don't shoot commercially. I have decided to stick with crop sensor only since the A6600 has given me wonderful results.
The new 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens also looks interesting - especially the ability to use a TC. I had a TC when I shot with my Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and it was a very handy light weight addition to my travel kit for times that I needed just a bit longer reach!

Thanks for such a nice review. I have an a6500 and the a6700 seems to tick off all of the things that I wanted to improve. I did wonder how the HD performance was. The a6500 has very sharp 4K but the HD is pretty mediocre.
When the A7IV came out, I jumped on that since it solved everything I was concerned about with the a6500. The crop mode on the A7IV improves the rolling shutter quite a bit and it still has decent 4K and HD. That makes it a really good crop alternative. It works quite well with my old 18-200 APSC power zoom. This is a slow and not a very sharp lens but it's still great for run and gun video. I'm still super happy with the A7IV since it has many advantages being FF. For me, the a6700 ticked off what I wanted to improve on the A6500/ a6600 but did not make me sorry I got the A7IV.

Do not buy any sony camera if you want good 1080p. They dont oversample from 4k or even 6k. It's lineskippee 1080p. The worst version of 1080p you can possibly get. I'd even argue that it's not even true 1080p.
The reason why the 4k has always looked exceptionally sharp on the a6000 series was because of the oversampled image. From 6k sensor readout to a final 4k image. 18MP image squeezed into a 8mp one.

Great, detailed video. so help me with this decision. I have and love my a7iv. I need a second body for paid VIDEO projects to pair with my a7iv. Not only as a B-Cam but sometimes a second A-Cam. Should I get a used a7iv or an a6700? I had trouble matching the a7iv image with other cameras due to the sensor resolution. I think there is a case to be made for having both cameras be the same layout as well. But based on this video, the 6700 has to be considered.

Thanks for the awesome comparison video. Just what I was looking for. I am a 67 year old amateur "video first" photographer who jumped in on the A7IV bandwagon frenzy when it came out. I mostly use the camera for travel as I enjoy making videos for my UA-cam Channel. I find that the camera and the 24-105 lens is way to heavy to lug around the world. Unfortunately, I find myself using the GoPro or iphone instead in situations where I just don't want to deal with the weight. I am still learning to master the A7iv and the video editing process. I find it to be an incredible hobby in my retirement as I enjoy capturing our travels. The A6700 interests me due to the lighter weight capabilities which would make it easier to travel with. My question is, would it be crazy of me to sell or trade my A7iv and 24-105 lens and get a lighter A6700 with a nicely paired travel lens?

I saw from your video it seems to go beyond 56 frames for compressed raw as advertised by Sony. As a wildlife photographer, I hope that its buffer is more in the ballpark of 150 to 200 as it is a necessity if I want to shoot say a eagle diving.

Size matters. Once you start adding lenses there’s a big difference with the ASCP weight. Sure if you’re a pro, the HDMI and 2 card slots maybe essential, and that’s why you pay an extra $1000. But if you like travel, are not pro, or like a backup camera, good choice.

Yes, the new a7cii is an option but at a much higher price. The a6700 also has better video. Very nice video! I asked myself exactly this question yesterday: should I get the a7 IV or the a6700. I chose the a6700 because almost all of my photography will be very amateur still wildlife, and the effective magnification will come in handy. I live in north central Florida, and there are several beautiful wildlife parks and other areas within a 20-minute drive. I opted for the a6700 and Sony 70-200 f/4 macro zoom. The weather has been crappy for the last few days, but I'm hoping that toward the end of the week I can go to one of my favorite local swampland areas and shoot some of the probably 40 bird species that live there (and alligators and water moccasins).

Hi Jason, does the A6700 also appear blackout free in Hi drive mode (8fps) with live view as well, or are you referring to Hi+ (11 fps) that just displays the previous image and perhaps its due to processing. Or do you think the new mechanical shutter action is actually quicker and makes the A6700 better for shooting bursts? I was hoping this would be the case and you are the first I've seen that potentially mentions this. If so, I am more excited to upgrade. Thanks

About the HDMI sockets, how would you feel if some cameras moved from Micro-HDMI back to Mini-HDMI, which is in-between in size and durability. I think Micro should only be used for GoPros. Most cameras could be designed with Mini without a huge size increase.

I've now set aside the money for the A6700 but have two dilemmas. Nr.1 - does it support the Auto Framing even when connected with HDMI - like during the livestream? This is very important for my (guitar playing/teaching) scenarios. Nr.2 - the veeeery significant rumours that Sony is going to upgrade the A7C to mark2 and give it everything A6700 has - but on the full frame. It's also been speculated that the new A7CII will come with 33MP sensor. Hope they don't just move the A7IV sensor into this...

I really wish Sony would make a full-sized body crop sensor camera geared toward professionals with dual card slots and the bigger EVF and such. Basically, an A7IV with a crop sensor. I think I'd switch to the crop sensor in that scenario just to save some money on lenses. Full frame is great and all, but there are a lot of benefits to the crop sensor format as well.

It looks interesting and in different circumstances I might have ordered. But owning an a7iv (pretty darned good) it makes little sense for me. Saving circa +150g, is attractive but not enough reason.
Given my glass collection (only one legacy APS-C Zeiss f4 16-75mm) and 10+ full frame optics there isn't much point buying an a6700, unless I also bought a few more compact lenses.
Apart from the a6700 being slightly more compact and good for sports and wildlife (1.5 x and faster shoot rate with tracking) there isn't that much net net real world benefit for me.
I'd be happy to consider as a lighter travel camera (for photography) but net net the advantage of a few grammes weight saving vs on costs for duplicating full frame kit isn't really compelling. I don't want to just get rid of FF and only run AOS-C.
By the time I rig-up any camera (for video), then 150g saving is lost. Also handicapped by lack of CFexpress and a full size HDMI.
Once when I had an a6500 I also owned Sony's f4 70-200 G, but the quality at short end was iffy vs other options. Also as a FF lens it was bigger than it needed to be for APS-C.
IMO it's also a pity that the new mk2 f4 70-200 (clearly better) is also FF. Had it been APS-C only then it could have been a lot lighter again. But now as I also own the GM mk2 f2.8 70-200 there seems little merit in buying a new f4 version just to use on APS-C

Autocropping mocd - I have seen a few demo videos of this on the 6700 and ZV-E1 and it looks sloppy. Motion blur noise added when in motion, to the cropped-in face of the subject. It's a gimmick at best and you're going to be much better off framing wider and editing the movement in in editing. Retain the full sensor resolution and choose in post.
