IMO he's just both but I guess if you wanna be real technical about it he was a kickboxer first. (as in that's what he started to train and compete in)
Alistair Overeem has a specific game plan in his Kickboxing fights that works. He walks forward most of the fight with a high, tight guard, putting pressure on, and tires out his more skilled Kickboxing opponents, and than lands hard shots to put them down. The latest Badr Hari fight was a perfect example. Also past fights like the Spong or Ben Edwards fights are perfect examples. Hari and Spong were outstriking Overeem the first 2 rounds, and than eventually began tiring as Overeem kept pressing forwarding, while blocking their punches with his high guard, and than picked his spots to get his power shots through the wanning defense of his tiring opponents. He also benefits very well from the padding boxing gloves for his high guard as he walks forward.
Well that and the 30 inch arms are pretty useful for covering up with lol. I personally still think his actual striking technique etc is utter garbage 🗑️ but he's obviously very strong, got good defense for a big guy and can take some real good hits.
@@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812 His arms are big but not even 20 inch. I think his striking could be a problem against Rico for example, who has more stamina. Overeem cannot keep striking for 5 rounds straight.
@@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812 how is his striking garbage? Personally i think he used his reach, size and experience well, but otherwise TBH his striking is nothing special either in K-1 or MMA except for his knees and occasional speedy right cross. Well that's a disappointment lol. He's got pretty good defense but as far as his technique and skill, those are pretty garbage honestly. Now yes he's alot more talented than he should be at his size, butt that's really not saying a whole lot tbh. Big guys aren't known for skill lol
And not nearly as technical as Mike Tyson js(and I'm not even a big Tyson fan btw) I like him alot personally for who he is, but was never really a "fan" of his career. But one thing about Tyson most overlook is that his actual skill and technique far outweighs his massive size . @@barrymantz6026 I'm a black belt in MCMAP (Marine Martial Arts Program). I was an instructor, I coached fighters when I got out, and I can't help but to see opportunities get wasted while watching fights. It's not a big deal brother... I'm just saying Alistair had extremely good awareness in his center of balance and body position. He was a good striker, and the power was something. He had ease in take downs and controlling his opponents. But he lacked counters, and his submissions were limited. I would have loved to see him master BJJ, since that's all that he really lacked. He was a wrestler and did kick boxing. Two excellent disciplines to have in MMA. The final skill (BJJ) wraps it all up to be the ideal fighter. I'm not dissing him, just stating my opinion.
@@hornet-h3v excatly, all i see him is using 2 to 5 pattern yet most of them were not able to beat him, they were weak mentally and physically. I tell you, i never liked mma and ofc, they are kinda fake like wrestling, 2 guys in underwear fighting and if even one get a cut the fight is over, the ground is soft and man the street fighters are the real deal according to me, they know how to fight someone stronger, faster, with weapon, or multiple opponents and he know nothing of them, like who could be stronger or immune to pain due to drugs or presistant and even the psychopaths who will go any mean from faking a defeat to take all the beat in order to stab u in one particular area to which will lead to death. This is the reason why these mma ufc fighters army commando's never do street fighting, they all just can fight on equal terms.
I am a big fan of Overeem. I am always amazed at how well he could just move in on fighters to deliver strikes while avoiding being hit himself. Hands down, Lawrence Kenshin does the best striking "breakdowns" in the business. Your history of non-biased "good reads" is phenomenal and refreshing! I've listened for decades disgusted as ringside commentary clings hopefully for the wrong warrior, total lack of respect, even calling brilliant strategy as "just got lucky". LMAO Overeem did not “pave the way” for elite HW kickboxers in UFC. U pave the way if u fought a certain way successfully and that became a blueprint for others to follow. How did Overeem pave the way? He had mixed succes in UFC, and there were elite HW strikers in UFC long before Overeem: Pedro Rizzo, Junior Dos Santos, Mark Hunt, Cro Cop etc. Gane is a unique HW striker who uses great footwork to control distance, something Overeem never did hence the KO losses

High guard is seriously underrated
Look at how it was used even in boxing to help defeat Canelo
@@willtherealrustyschacklefo3812 how is his striking garbage? Personally i think he used his reach, size and experience well, but otherwise TBH his striking is nothing special either in K-1 or MMA except for his knees and occasional speedy right cross. U cant win so many belts being a ‘garbage striker’ though
@@austinsavage as a heavyweight you will because they are all garbage skill wise when it comes to striking. That's just biology and physics lol

I was not aware of Alistair until he fought in UFC. He is definitely a bad man! Thanks for the video.
The most technical heavyweight striker without a doubt!
Not anymore
Ngnaanou has fucked him
Well that's a disappointment lol.
Most just talk about him being big and strong, which of course he is, but he was a very technical fighter, certainly the most technical heavyweight in combat sports
Ever heard of and watched any of Ciryl Gane's fights?
Mad respect for you making a video about Overeem..
Ubereem you need had to be there this make me wanna go back and watch his fights when he fought in Dream K1 and Strikeforce right before he got to the UF

He was a real beast of MMA before.. but the UFC is so stacked with younger and talented fighters.
In his prime ... a true monster.

He was full of P.e.ds
Also full of roids
@@matthieusaade3616 Like many of his opponents
@@xftbllplyr2091 Yeah but Overeem took it to the extreme. There are great pictures documenting how big he got and how fast it happen.
And the decline in his physique when USADA started testing people in the UFC.
I wish we could have Uberreem back because seeing his technical striking decline so badly in his last few years in the UFC was depressing
what's depressing is his grappling ability gave him much bigger gap over most ufc fighters than his striking did. Unfortunatelly just like George Gurgel he pushed with his striking and that's not a good idea all the time.
@@hagestad Yeah, his striking was fine, but in his later years his chin wasn't. He got a glass chin his last couple of years of fighting and shoulda just grappled
Always loved watching his fights. He had a lot to improve on still.
I could tell he was comfortable standing up and striking. But i could also tell his toolbox was limited.
Would have been awesome to see him master the submissions.
What are you talking about? He made a new stance in fighting!

He is a Dutch Viking!
I am a big fan of Overeem. I am always amazed at how well he could just move in on fighters to deliver strikes while avoiding being hit himself. I really loved his fight against Brock Lesnar and watch it a few times per year. I was really disappointed when he did not obtain the UFC title, but he is still a great one.
You should meet him! So arrogant and rude! Thinks he’s all that

Hands down, Lawrence Kenshin does the best striking "breakdowns"
in the business. Your history of non-biased "good reads" is phenomenal and refreshing! I've listened for decades disgusted as ringside commentary clings hopefully for the wrong warrior, total lack of respect, even calling brilliant strategy as "just got lucky". Poor sportsmanship inside and outside the ring... cheap and low brow! Look how many times Overeem pulled or stopped blows knowing the fight was over even before the referee reacted... a true champion and gentlemen!
thanks so much for the support!
It doesn't bother you that he keeps calling random left hooks, superman punches?

Overeem is mainly seen as this monster striker (which he is), but many forget that he's actually a true MMA fighter having besides 25 KOs also 17 submission wins. When he locked up that guillotine, it was basically a wrap (probably has more guillotine wins than anyone from Team Alpha Male). He's way more well-rounded than most of MMA's HWs.

UFC is not MMA. He had 40 mma fights and was 2-2 in kickboxing when all of this took place.

you cant deny that overeem paved the way for elite level heavyweight kickboxers in the UFC. you can see his style in the in the likes of Gane ... absolute legend of the sport and a true monster in his prime
